“Always be two steps ahead,” repeatedly says Rachel Hyde, the famous alter ego of the namesake character in Hammer Studios’ “Doctor Jekyll.” The film’s director, Joe Stephenson, and his screenwriter Dan Kelly-Mulhern don’t take her advice, and it’s much to the detriment of their contemporary adaptation of the 1886 Robert Louis Stevenson novella, which can’t decide singularly what Jekyll’s transformation is a metaphor for. All volunteered options are either obvious or severely undercooked. Though Stephenson offers plenty of suitably spooky imagery, and importantly finds a more-than-game collaborator in Izzard as both the good and evil doctor, “Doctor Jekyll” is meandering and empty, an update with neither enough loyalty to its source material or imagination to make its departures meaningful.
The film stars Scott Chambers as Rob Stevenson, a just-released ex-convict whose brother Ewan (Morgan Watkins) secures him a job “providing care” for Dr. Nina Jekyll (Izzard...

Severin follows up their 2023 collection of Italian gothic titles with an essential second volume that brings together three films and a miniseries. Each work takes a very different approach to the gothic as both a visual aesthetic and a set of thematic preoccupations. The results range from virtually archetypal to resolutely revisionist. For this well-appointed set, Severin provides a veritable bounty of bonus materials: new restorations, alternate cuts, commentary tracks, cast and crew interviews, visual essays, even a soundtrack CD.
Antonio Margheriti’s Danza Macabra, from 1964, is one of the very best Italian gothic films. It simply oozes with atmosphere courtesy of Riccardo Pallottini’s moody monochrome cinematography, and, while the violence remains relatively restrained, Margheriti brazenly pushes the envelope when it comes to nudity and some suggestive sexual content. Likely as a bid to cash in on Roger Corman’s Poe Cycle, Danza Macabra not only claims to be...

Henry Pettigrew and Lorn Macdonald in The Strange Case Of Dr Jekyll And Mr Hyde Photo: Courtesy of Eiff Hope Dickson Leach’s The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde premieres on Sky Arts at 9pm on October 30. It’s the final destination of the reimagining of the Robert Louis Stevenson that began as a hybrid theatre piece and then screened in cinemas. Her retelling, co-adapted with Vlad Butucea, offers a change from the usual sight of Dr Jekyll (Henry Pettigrew) growing fur and turning monstrous in his lab in favour of coming at the story more from Stevenson’s original perspective of lawyer Gabriel Utterson (Lorn Macdonald), who finds himself becoming increasingly morally compromised as the tale progresses. We can’t up with Dickson Leach to talk about creating the hybrid film with the National Theatre of Scotland and coming at it from a different angle after...

There’s an orgy scene which – in this very rock’n’roll way – we shot at 10am. It was a Steadicam shot, so everyone had to be acting all the time because you don’t know where the camera is looking. It was about a six-minute take where everyone was going for it in this big room. Then they go, “Cut!”, everyone stops, then someone says: “Ok, go for another take.” I was with the wonderful Emily Woof and just had to get very intimate, very quickly. You stop, mark time and go back into it.

Director Joe Stephenson’s Doctor Jekyll, “a modern interpretation” of Robert Louis Stevenson’s 1886 novella The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde that stars gender fluid comedian/actor Eddie Izzard (The Lost Symbol) as Doctor Nina Jekyll, is set to reach cinemas in the UK on October 27th – and with that date just a few weeks away, a trailer for the film has arrived online. Film studios don’t get much more iconic than Hammer Films, the production company that defined the horror genre in Britain throughout the 1950s, 1960s and beyond, releasing classics including Dracula, The Curse Of Frankenstein and The Mummy. Whilst the studio’s repertoire expands beyond just horror movies, its back catalogue of monsters and more are its signature, and have had a lasting impact on the genre to this day. Nearly 90 years after Hammer was founded, they’re moving into a new era with the release of Doctor Jekyll – a modern take on the classic double-identity story, starring comedy and screen legend Eddie Izzard in the titular role.
Izzard plays Nina Jekyll, an infamous doctor who takes on some hired help in the form of ex-convict Rob (Scott Chambers). Little does Rob know, he’s part of a sinister master plan concocted by Nina’s alter-ego, Rachel Hyde. Chaos and weirdness ensures,...

Since the publication of The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde in 1886 there have been over 120 adaptations of Robert Louis Stevenson’s novella. The adaptations have changed and evolved to keep the story fresh; these include a Blaxploitation retelling, Dr Black and Mr Hyde, and Dr Jekyll and Sister Hyde, where the good Doctor transforms into a woman. The latest reimagining of this classic is arguably its most diverse, as Jekyll and Hyde are both transgender women.

Anthony Perkins in Edge Of Sanity (1989) will be available on Special Edition Blu-ray June 21st from Arrow Video
Anthony Perkins builds upon his legendary status as cinema’s seminal psycho in Edge of Sanity, a delirious conflation of Robert Louis Stephenson’s classic horror novella ‘Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde’ and Jack the Ripper’s real-life reign of terror over Victorian London.
When his experiments into a powerful new anaesthetic go hideously awry, respected physician Dr Jekyll (Perkins) takes off into the night, casting aside the shackles of upper-class propriety as he disappears into the shadowy decadent demimonde of Whitechapel in pursuit of sensual pleasures under the guise of ‘Mr Hyde’. As his wife Elisabeth (Glynis Barber) passes her time in charitable work, rehabilitating the district’s fallen women, Hyde is drawn into an escalating cycle of lust and murder that seems to know no bounds.

In just her fourth American movie the Swedish import Ingrid Bergman proves herself the most sensual creature in Hollywood, running away with Spencer Tracy and Victor Fleming’s remake of Mamoulian’s pre-Code classic. The morals are cleaned up and the sex angle tamed down (except for Fröken Bergman) and the acting is less stylized — overall it’s a fine show. Ingrid learned quickly how things were done at MGM — she swiped the film’s plum role from Lana Turner.

I've worked remotely for more than 15 years, so the transition to pandemic life wasn't as jarring as it was for some, but even I wasn't mentally prepared for will likely be 2+ years of us being in lockdown. It's been a real struggle to watch anything that's super serious (I'm still waiting to see Relic!), and I've turned to some of my favorites as horror movie comfort food, including... The Monster Club!
Those who have listened to our Corpse Club podcast over the years know that this has been a favorite of mine for quite some time now. It's easily the movie I've watched the most in the last ten years and no other movie comes close, but it isn't nostalgia driving my interest in re-watching this. I didn't see the movie until maybe 10-15 years ago, but thanks to the Code Red Blu-ray release, it's been a regular watch ever since.

The Dark Universe, Universal’s would-be monster movie franchise, may have only fallen apart a scant four years ago with 2017’s The Mummy, but the mindset behind its conception now feels like a notion from a completely different age. That logic, of course, implied that lucrative, Marvel Cinematic Universe-like film franchises could be conjured from just about any intellectual property. Interestingly, one of the writers involved, Eric Heisserer, believes the Dark Universe imploded behind the scenes well before it did at the box office.
Heisserer, who’s serving as showrunner for franchise-aspiring Netflix television adaptation Shadow and Bone, had just broken big with his Oscar-nominated screenplay for 2016 sci-fi drama Arrival and horror film Lights Out when he was tapped to co-write (with Jon Spaihts) a Dark Universe reboot movie for vampire hunter Van Helsing, which Channing Tatum was expected to headline. The gig put him in a dream team writer...

A Game of Thrones stage production is in the early stages of development from producers Simon Painter and Tim Lawson, with the play being written and adapted Duncan MacMillan working alongside author George R.R. Martin. UK director Dominic Cooke is set to direct.
Martin released the following statement:
The seeds of war are often planted in times of peace. Few in Westeros knew the carnage to come when highborn and smallfolk alike gathered at Harrenhal to watch the finest knights of the realm compete in a great tourney, during the Year of the False Spring. It is a tourney oft referred during HBO’s Game of Thrones, and in my novels, A Song of Ice & Fire… and now, at last, we can tell the whole story… on the stage.

Roger Corman began his boom year of 1957 with a marvelous bit of ‘way-out’ sci-fi — a ‘Tidal Wave of Terror’ no less. This note just arrived from Donald J.’s Seafood Emporium: “You puny, dunderheaded humans, don’t let the campy title fool you! Soon you will be ‘absorbed’ into our crabby super-mentalities, heh heh heh. We atom-age crustaceans are made of electric anti-matter — it’s incredible! Our telepathy is the best telepathy ever — everybody says so! It is what it is!” The new Blu-ray will charm fans seeking prime ‘fifties monster nirvana.

When I was a kid, I somehow inherited an 8mm film projector and managed to convince my mom to buy me a handful of movies on the format. Now when I say “movies,” I mean these little spools of 8mm celluloid that basically took various motion pictures and condensed them down to silent 10-minute highlight reels, mostly in black and white.
They were in many ways the earliest precursor of home video, and one of the films I convinced my mom to purchase was Hammer Films’ Taste the Blood of Dracula. While the format really prevented me from making much sense of the narrative, certain imagery–Dracula’s face emerging from beneath a cracking caul of dust, two beautiful young women driving a stake into the heart of an older gentleman, a younger man drinking a cup of blood and choking as it poured out of his mouth–stayed firmly with me.

Saw co-creator Leigh Whannell and Blumhouse’s update of The Invisible Man hits theaters next weekend, which means we can all move on with our lives and pretend as though the ill-fated Dark Universe never existed. Universal’s last attempt at rebooting their stable of iconic monsters for modern audiences didn’t go too well, with The Mummy quickly following 2014’s forgotten Dracula Untold in falling spectacularly at the first hurdle.
The Universal Monsters had appealed to movie fans for decades because they were all painted as tragic figures in their own ways, so the decision by the studio to try and ape the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s recipe for success and reinvent the characters as the stars of action blockbusters always seemed doomed to fail. Plenty of planned shared universes have fallen by the wayside in recent years because the people in the boardroom are so desperate to rush...

Sherlock might be on indefinite hiatus, but the two creators of BBC’s smash-hit drama, Steven Moffat and Mark Gatiss, have got a new show lined up. Variety reports that the pair are working on a TV series based on Bram Stoker’s classic horror novel Dracula.
Simply titled Dracula, the show will follow the same format as Sherlock, taking the shape of a miniseries run of feature-length 90 minute episodes. It’ll be produced by Sue Vertue and her company Harstwood Films, who were also behind the aforementioned BBC hit.
Variety says that Moffat and Gatiss are “currently working on solo projects” but will turn their attention towards Dracula soon. Though no scripts have been written, talks are already underway with the BBC for broadcast rights in the U.K. It seems likely that a deal will be made, too, seeing as Moffat has brought much success to the corporation...

Dracula is returning to England. Mark Gatiss and Steven Moffat are in talks to produce new series for BBC...
Sherlock creators Mark Gatiss and Steven Moffat have detected another classic novel to sink their teeth into. Bram Stoker’s Dracula begins with a real estate deal. Jonathan Harker secures the Transylvanian count some scattered properties in Whitby, England, where he can kick off his cape and hide his native soil. Those hiding places are discovered through some stiff detective work. 127 years after the 1897 publication of the classic horror novel, the quintessential vampire will be returning to England. Moffat and Gatiss are in negotiations with the BBC to create a new Dracula miniseries.

Dracula will be the first time Moffat and Gatiss have collaborated since Sherlock aired its long awaited season 4 earlier this year. The future of Sherlock has not yet been decided. Work on the new Dracula series will begin after Moffat finishes his sixth and final season on Doctor Who.
Dracula has been adapted for stage, screen and TV many times. Stoker wrote the first theatrical version. It was first adapted to film by F. W. Murnau in Nosferatu in 1922. Bela Lugosi went from stage to screen when he starred in the 1931 Universal Studios classic. The BBC produced the TV movie Count Dracula, starring Louis Jourdan in 1977.
Gatiss is on record as a fan of the 1958 Hammer Horror version of Dracula, which starred Christopher Lee as the count and Peter Cushing as Dr. Van Helsing. Moffat took on classic horror in 2007 when he wrote the series Jekyll. Gatiss played Dracula in a full-cast audio play from Big Finish in 2016.
There is no word on whether Dracula will be set in modern day England.

His history of underperforming at the box office makes predicting a post-Marvel career tricky.
If the image of a bearded, flannel-clad Chris Evans playing a single uncle isn’t enough to lure throngs of women to the movies, I don’t know what will. In his latest film, Gifted, Evans plays Frank Adler, the aforementioned single uncle to a spunky six year-old gifted child, Mary (Mckenna Grace). Frank is caring for his niece after the unexpected death of his sister and he yearns for the child to have a normal and healthy life. After he sends Mary off on her first day of school, her teacher, Bonnie (Jenny Slate), notices the child’s remarkable abilities and alerts the school’s principal. Mary is offered a chance to attend a prestigious school for gifted children, which Frank promptly declines. This kicks off a custody battle between Frank and his estranged mother, Evelyn...

Before River Song, Trenzalore and his take on The Doctor, before Sherlock fell off a building and provided multiple explanations, before James Nesbitt flipped out in a zoo in Jekyll, before Coupling, Joking Apart and Chalk, maybe even before he was known as The Moff, before all that came the quite brilliant Press Gang. Steven Moffat's first TV series, which he wrote all 42 episodes of, was based on an idea by his father, Bill Moffat. At its centre it had a brilliant will they/won't they relationship, and the epitome of a strong female character in Lynda Day. After 5 series it ended, but left behind so many quality episodes, which in trying to choose the stand out mind-blowers has been nigh on impossible. But for jolting,...

We asked Steven Moffat if he's involved in the movie of Jekyll. And he is. To a point...
At the end of the round table interviews for the Doctor Who Christmas special last week, we quickly got a chance to quiz Steven Moffat about the planned movie of his TV show, Jekyll.
Based on the Jekyll & Hyde story, Moffat’s Jekyll cast James Nesbitt in the lead role, and the Hollywood version has seen Captain America himself, Chris Evans, cast in the lead. Charles Mondry and Anthony Bagarozzi – who penned The Nice Guys – are writing the screenplay. Zombieland’s Ruben Fleischer is set to direct.
But is Steven Moffat involved in any way? Well, once all the Doctor Who questions were done, I asked him.
“Yes, I’m involved a bit”, he told us. “It’s all being talked about at the moment. We’ll see, we’ll see.

Steven Moffat's Jekyll TV show is being turned into a feature film starring Chris Evans...
“He was wild when he was young; a long while ago to be sure; but in the law of God, there is no statute of limitations,” Robert Louis Stevenson wrote in The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, and 130 years later the tale is still being reimagined. Ruben Fleischer (Zombieland) is now set to direct a feature film remake of Steven Moffat’s 2007 BBC One mini-series Jekyll.

Chris Evans is is ready to put down the Captain America shield for a spell and star as another iconic genre creation.

Captain America star Chris Evans is currently in talks to join Lionsgate's Jekyll, which will be based on Steven Moffat's 2007 BBC series. The series continued the events of Robert Louis Stevenson’s Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. If cast, Evans will take on the lead role of Tom Jackman. If you aren't familiar with the series, it was officially described as follows:

Chris Evans could well be the new Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, but not in the way you might think.
The "Captain America" star is said to be in talks for the title role in Lionsgate's "Jekyll," a remake of the 2007 British mini-series which served as a contemporary update of Robert Louis Stevenson's tale.
"Sherlock" and "Doctor Who" producer Steven Moffat created the original which starred James Nesbitt as Dr. Henry Jackman, a married man with a family who tries to keep the dangerous Mr. Hyde element of his personality under control thanks to modern technology.
At the same time an ancient organisation with limitless wealth and power is monitoring their every move. Anthony Bagarozzi and Charles Mondry are adapting the script from the original miniseries while Ellen DeGeneres and Jeff Kleeman will produce.

Chris Evans plays pretty much the most morally upright superhero there is as Steve Rogers in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but the Captain America: Civil War star may very well be about to take a villainous turn. The actor looks set to take on the lead role of Tom Jackman in Jekyll, an upcoming movie from Lionsgate.
The writing team of Anthony Bagarozzi and Charles Mondry (who worked with Shane Black on The Nice Guys and his upcoming Doc Savage adaptation) penned the screenplay, and Jekyll is actually based on the 2007 BBC One series which was the creation of Steven Moffat (Doctor Who).
Set in the present day, it revolved around Jackman – played on TV by The Hobbit star James Nesbitt – a descendant of Jekyll who begins to exhibit signs of a split personality. He then abandons his family, creates a new home in a fortified basement and finds an ally in a psychiatric nurse.

Deadline is reporting that McU star and perfect-toothed goodness factory Chris Evans is in talks to unleash his still-probably-pretty-cheerful dark side on a planned film adaptation of the BBC TV miniseries Jekyll. Evans would play Tom Jackman, a modern-day descendent of Dr. Henry Jekyll, forced to share a body and a life with a super-powered evil side that’s the result of his distant ancestor’s famous experiments. (Jackman was played by James Nesbitt in the six-episode British show, created by Doctor Who showrunner Steven Moffat.) Evans is currently attached to Lionsgate’s film version of the series, and will presumably also play Jackman’s sexier, more dangerous Hyde persona if the movie moves forward.

A fan-favorite character is returning to Season 10 of “Doctor Who.” The BBC announced that Matt Lucas, known for playing Nardole, will be making an appearance in the opening episode of the upcoming season.
“I’m chuffed to bits that Nardole is returning to the Tardis for some more adventures. I loved acting with Peter and I’m excited to work with Pearl,” Lucas said in a statement.
Nardole is a human cyborg who made his first appearance in the 2015 Christmas special, “The Husbands of River Song.” He was told by Professor Song to find the surgeon needed to extract the Halassi Androvar from the head of King Hydroflax. But instead, Nardole found Doctor Who and took him to the Professor.

“Delighted and slightly amazed to be welcoming Matt Lucas back on to the Tardis – and this time it’s not just for Christmas, he’s sticking around,” said Steven Moffat, lead writer and executive producer. “One of the greatest comedy talents on planet Earth is being unleashed on all of time and space.”
Filming for “Doctor Who” begins Monday, June 20 in Cardiff, Wales. Pearl Mackie, who was recently cast as Peter Capaldi’s new companion, will embark on her first week filming the role of Bill. This will be her first major television role following her West End appearance in “The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night Time.”

The Doctor’s companions have been almost exclusively white over its 50-year history, and the Doctor himself has been nothing but white, so it's exciting to hear showrunner Steven Moffat putting some powerful words into the universe about steps toward better diversity.
