Probably biased, but...

I started watching this show purely out of personal interest. I know Dan personally, was present for some of the filming, know several of the "Fort Zion" and "Fort Bethlehem" men and women (and I live with two SPO members), and have been to many of the places where Dan's scenes were filmed. Once I started watching the show, I realized how awesome it is. As a non-Catholic with several Catholic friends and family, I am very intrigued by the issue of celibacy. I think this show treated this delicate struggle in a respectful light...most of the time. I am very bothered, though, by the fact that they were expected to announce their final decisions by the end of the show's run. I think the show could have been very well done even if it concluded with the four men still up in the air about their decisions. Watching Dan carry the cross, watching Joe trek to the retreat center, and watching Steve journey to Guatemala is insightful and amazing enough to see in itself. Unfortunately, we Americans like having nice neat tidy endings, which is probably why the show's producers felt the need to pressure them. I was taking a class with Dan and many of the Fort Zion men while the show was being filmed, and I could see first hand that it took a tremendous toll on them, which I felt was somewhat unfair. Overall, I highly recommend this show to everyone, especially those interested in religious issues.

Finally, a show that makes sense

Finally, a reality show that everyone can relate to. I've been debating this all my life. Should I choose priesthood and take the burden of becoming a man of god and the life of misery that comes with it just to have a chance at greater spoils in the afterlife? Or instead, ditch the robes and have a wild and crazy time and risk having a sucky after death experience? Now I can work through this decision by the experiences of the guys in this show. For all of those in that pre-mid-life priesthood decision crisis, I am sure that we can all agree that we've been looking for answers everywhere. At last, television provides what we have been looking for.

Disappointed

I started to watch this show just by casually changing the channels. I find it great to see young men pick faith as a life calling and a career. I believe maybe one of the men will make it.

But what disappointed me was Steve. Steve was invited to be a foreign missionary in Guatemala. Now I am from Guatemala and i was so upset at the opportunity given to him. Today the Catholic Church has been given a bad name with issues such as homosexuality and abuse. Priests in Guatemala are no strangers to this and I have met priests in Guatemala from Europe who have gone there and tried to make a difference. Steve on the other hand goes to Guatemala, not even trying to learn the language to communicate to the people, whining about the smells and looks of his surroundings. If Steve actually looked into Guatemala and the history of the faith he would actually learn how local indigenous people mixed their indigenous faith and the catholic faith. He would learn how predominantly one country follows one religion. He would appreciate his experience if he stopped complaining!
