Too brief to be truly effective
bob the moo29 August 2005
Eugene Hicks has what every woman wants. He is extremely intelligent and very well paid. He drives a big car and has never had a sexual partner. Some might say he is arrogant but Eugene knows what he has and what gifts his perfect self can give to the world.

I'm not entirely sure what the point of the film was although I suspect that it can be best taken as a statement on the importance of controlling medical practices to guard against the ego rather than allowing it to "play god". However this point is not that well made and is simply plunked down after we have established that Eugene is an arrogant, rich t*sser. Up until the end I thought it was a comedy that was going to play Eugene for laughs and the sudden change of direction with so little time left meant that it had no time to do much with it. Mylan isn't sure either, so he has nothing but the arrogance to his character and his singing didn't help anything either (more a fault of the material than of him). Hurley's direction and use of the locations are good but I would have preferred him to do a bit more with his idea rather than delivering something interesting but leaving it half-cooked.

Overall, an interesting subject but not one that is explored well here. Still distracting enough to watch but not as effective as I would have liked it to be.

Bizarre

This is a four minute short where the world is introduced to Eugene Hicks and for a male audience many of us feel we shouldn't have been introduced:

" I have what every woman wants . trust me " Trust must be earned Eugene

" I'm extremely intelligent and incredibly well paid " Ah that's where the trust must be earned Eugene , if you'd said something like " I'm a complete mug and incredibly well paid " then perhaps you would have got away with " I have what every woman wants "

" I drive a Ferrari Enzo and an Aston Martin " What you mean you're able to drive two cars at once ? That must be very conveniant if you want to be in two places at once and not even Michael Schumaker can achieve this remarkable feat

But as the story goes on it's revealed that Eugene is doing something very naughty . I won't give away the ending but isn't there a fly in the ointment here ? Eugene looks like he's of mixed race and if he's doing what I think he's doing won't the parents realise something is up if the parents are both white ?

like Gandhi on crack...

For people that enjoy a slice of irony, The Divine Eugene Hicks is a perfect roller-coaster of mockery. Eugene... acutely makes use of witty diatribes to the camera, so often used in Guy Ritchie's cinematic abortions, but with a perfect tongue-in-cheek cynicism. Anthony Hurley intuitively creates a full character that we instantaneously connect with, through his thoroughly foul persona, oozing testosterone and charisma, not forgetting a slight Bateman-esqueness. From this fabulously written character and Richard Mylan's perfect delivery, this is a short far better than many made. If 10 equates as excellent, then Eugene... is fully deserving. The best thing released since Weekend at Bernie's 2...
