Ambitious choices continued, with a role in Lars von Trier’s Manderlay, playing the part originated by Nicole Kidman in Dogville, as an ally to slaves in rural Alabama. Then followed a reunion with Shyalaman for Lady in the Water, and a return to her roots, playing...

The Dune star has enjoyed tremendous success, and these are still fairly early days for her. However, she owes it to her parents, especially her mother, who ended up shaping her career as a thespian.

“All the world’s a stage,” said Jaques in Shakespeare’s As You Like it, “And all the men and women merely players; They have their exits and their entrances.” What he didn’t say, though it follows on logically enough if you think about it, was that some miss their cues and others barge in too early. And what if the play’s not very good? What then?
Some poor players surrender meekly to life’s vicissitudes, but others, disregarding the cost, are determined to take command of their own destinies. Such a man is Yannick (Raphaël Quenard), a night watchman who does his job diligently and who therefore thinks it reasonable that others should do the same. That includes actors, and theatre directors, and playwrights. Watching a boulevard comedy in a small theatre, Yannick feels betrayed. He doesn’t get many nights...

Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire star Dan Stevens truly has a spring in his step right now.
Over the next five months, the English actor has three unique genre films hitting theaters, beginning with Friday’s Godzilla x Kong, which marks his long-awaited reunion with his The Guest director, Adam Wingard. A decade ago, Wingard cast Stevens as David Collins, an unhinged super soldier who ultimately terrorizes the family of a fallen friend and fellow soldier, and the project served as the London native’s breakout feature film role. The Guest continues to increase its cult status with each passing year, and Stevens and Wingard, as well as writer Simon Barrett, have fielded countless requests for a sequel ever since.

One of Elvis Presley‘s songs features a spoken word section. The tune is partly based on a famous quotation from William Shakespeare. Colonel Tom Parker had Elvis record the song for a very special reason — and Elvis went the extra mile to make sure the song sounded just right.

“Are You Lonesome Tonight?” is a highly atypical Elvis song, mostly because it features a long spoken word section. Andre Braugher, the dynamic actor known for his outstanding work on such shows as Homicide: Life on the Street and Brooklyn Nine-Nine, has died. He was 61.
Braugher died Monday after a brief illness, his longtime rep Jennifer Allen told The Hollywood Reporter. The cause of death turned out to be lung cancer.

This generation of filmgoers mostly probably thinks of Irish actor-director Kenneth Branagh as Agatha Christie’s mustachioed detective Hercule Poirot in Murder on the Orient Express (2017), Death on the Nile (2022) and the upcoming A Haunting in Venice.
But there is so much more to Branagh’s career. As a director, he’s dabbled in multiple genres, including fantasy, action, science fiction, thriller, comedy and superhero.
Branaghs career as an actor has been equally as diverse. He’s acted in legal thrillers, Westerns, romantic thrillers, animation, fantasy pics and dramedies.
And then there’s Shakespeare. There’s always Shakespeare. Branagh has a self-professed love of the Bard. He’s acted in and directed...

When comparing Greta Gerwig's film "Barbie" to ancient writings, one might find that it bears the strongest resemblance to the Book of Genesis. Barbie and Ken are Adam and Eve, Barbieland is the Garden of Eden, and the Patriarchy is the Forbidden Fruit. Ken also serves as the Serpent in this metaphor. Unlike in Genesis, however, Eden remains the blissful paradise it always was at the end, and it's Barbie who leaves to grow up.
Gerwig has been open about the unexpected spiritual influences on "Barbie," having written an Apostle's Creed for her lead character. She also once noted that Barbie was created first, in 1959, with Ken hitting the market in 1960. Barbie was alone in the Garden before God created Ken out of her rib. Gerwig also held what she called "movie church" every Sunday while filming "Barbie," inviting her cast to worship at the alter of cinema at...

The cast of Hamlet posed for a group picture on their opening night for one of New York’s most beloved traditions, Free Shakespeare In the Park, at the Delacorte Theatre.
Kenny Leon’s production of Hamlet gives a modern take on the classic Shakespeare play of family and betrayal and stars Ato Blankson-Wood, as the titular character.
When he was asked about the “contemporary post-2020 Hamlet,” Blankson-Wood told TimeOut that part of what’s incorporated in the play is the “racial reckoning that happened during the pandemic.”
“Something else we’re wrestling with is the ways we are implicated in systems and the ways we’re lending energy to things that are destructive,” he continued. “The pandemic allowed us the time to really look in the mirror and not hide from ourselves. So I think there’s something really bare and naked about our production.”

Welcome to Global Breakouts, Deadline’s fortnightly strand in which we shine a spotlight on the TV shows and films killing it in their local territories. The industry is as globalized as it’s ever been, but breakout hits are appearing in pockets of the world all the time and it can be hard to keep track… So, we’re going to do the hard work for you.
This week we head to Iran, where filmmaker Nima Javidi’s debut TV series has been winning awards and generating plenty of attention. Taking inspiration from the Bard himself, the show follows two friends who use their acting skills to help solve cold cases. What could possibly go wrong? Plenty, it turns out. Having won the Series Mania Grand Prize, attracting the attention of thousands of important attendees at the annual Lille confab, The Actor’s creator and seller now have their sights set globally.

The top honorees at the 2023 Laurence Olivier Awards were plays that focused on cultures outside of London. “My Neighbour Totoro,” which is based on the beloved Japanese film of the same name from Studio Ghibli, won six trophies, the most of the night, including Best New Comedy, Director, and four craft categories. A revival of the American classic “A Streetcar Named Desire” by Tennessee Williams claimed three: Best Play Revival and for lead Paul Mescal and featured player Anjana Vasan. Meanwhile, the British-based “Prima Facie,” which is set to bow on Broadway this month and will thus compete at the Tony Awards, took home two prizes for Best Play and for star Jodie Comer.
The only other productions to win more than one trophy were all musicals. “Standing at the Sky’s Edge” won two of the top prizes: Best Musical and Best Original Score or New Orchestrations. “Tammy Faye,...

Two new works based on existing material dominated the nominations for the 2023 Olivier Awards, the top theatre honor in Britain. “My Neighbour Totoro” and “Standing at the Sky’s Edge” lead the play and musical fields with nine and eight bids apiece. The former is a stage adaptation of the Studio Ghibli film of the same name, brought to life in a visually stunning production featuring impressive puppetry by Basil Twist. “Standing at the Sky’s Edge” uses songs from the Richard Hawley album and new material to tell the story of three families in a Sheffield housing complex.
Revivals had strong showings, too. Director Daniel Fish’s remounting of “Rodger & Hammerstein’s Oklahoma!” and the Paul Mescal-led “A Streetcar Named Desire” netted seven and six nominations, respectively. This production of “Oklahoma!” previously played Broadway and received eight Tony Award nominations, including wins for Best Revival and Featured Actress...

SAG Awards nominee profile: Taron Egerton (‘Black Bird’) would be third youngest male TV winner ever
Just last year, Michael Keaton’s Screen Actors Guild Award victory for “Dopesick” made him the fifth man to win the organization’s Best TV Movie/Miniseries Actor prize after losing on his first lead film bid (for 2014’s “Birdman”). Now, since Taron Egerton has earned guild recognition for Apple TV+’s “Black Bird” after coming up short on his nomination for the 2019 film “Rocketman,” the group is already on the verge of gaining its sixth member. If he triumphs on this outing, the 33-year-old will also follow comedy champ Sean Hayes and limited series victor Darren Criss as the third youngest man to ever win an individual SAG Award for TV acting.
The four actors who preceded Keaton in eventually spinning their initial lead film losses into TV movie or miniseries wins were Paul Newman, Kevin Kline, Paul Giamatti and Bryan Cranston. Keaton and Giamatti stand apart from the...

M. Night Shyamalan thought his career was over. In the mid- to late-’90s, he was trapped at Miramax, and his little-seen second film, 1998’s Wide Awake, had been put through the Harvey Weinstein wringer. His dreams of being a working Hollywood director were fading day by day until his reps at UTA found a crack in his otherwise ironclad Miramax contract. The company may have owned his ability to direct, but it did not control his ability to write. So Shyamalan opted to pen the best screenplay he possibly could in order to leverage its demand and escape the clutches of Miramax. That script became The Sixth Sense, and Disney (which then owned Miramax) soon bought the rights with Shyamalan on board as director.

After a bruising battle to expose the red tops’ dirty tricks, the actor reveals the price she paid
In the late summer of 2005, Sienna Miller was appearing in the West End of London in a production of As You Like It. It is hard to remember how things were back then – how feverish the attention around young, female celebrities was and how ferocious the tabloids were in pursuing them. Fresh from filming the remake of Alfie, and dating her co-star Jude Law, Miller was both a style icon (the queen of “boho chic”) and the biggest tabloid target in Britain – as the Observer put it, an “actress and model who has been traded like pork belly on the celebrity market”. When, that summer, the Sun published a “rumour” that Miller was pregnant, her world exploded.
She was 23, panicked, mortified – and obliged to stand on stage eight times a week before a capacity audience of 800 people.

In the 18 years since he made his TV acting debut on the Disney Channel series “Phil of the Future,” Evan Peters has appeared in a recurring or regular capacity on seven more shows, including nine installments of the anthology series “American Horror Story.” Now, he has at last succeeded in capturing the attention of his peers in the Screen Actors Guild with his performance on the HBO limited series “Mare of Easttown,” which just won him an Emmy last September. If he ends up taking home the Best TV Movie/Mini Actor prize, he will be the seventh actor to win it on his first-ever SAG bid and the first since Kevin Costner (“Hatfields & McCoys”) nine years ago.
Peters’s challengers in this contest are Murray Bartlett (“The White Lotus”), Oscar Isaac (“Scenes from a Marriage”), Michael Keaton (“Dopesick”), and Ewan McGregor (“Halston”). Like Peters, both Bartlett and Isaac are SAG newcomers.

Michael Keaton already has three SAG Awards on his mantel, but he has yet to win for an individual performance. Instead, his trophies all came for being in the winning film ensembles of “Birdman,” “Spotlight” and “The Trial of the Chicago 7.” Might Keaton’s poignant performance in “Dopesick” finally be his ticket to an individual victory? His co-nominees at the Screen Actors Guild are Evan Peters (“Mare of Easttown”), Murray Bartlett (“The White Lotus”), Ewan McGregor (“Halston”) and Oscar Isaac (“Scenes from a Marriage”). Fresh off his Emmy win for his supporting turn on “Mare of Easttown,” Evan Peters is sitting pretty in first place in our Screen Actors Guild Awards odds for limited series/TV movie actor. Just like at the Emmys, this would be his first SAG Award nomination, and should he take home the prize on Feb. 27, he’ll become the category’s second youngest winner ever.
Peters turns 35 on Jan. 20 and would be just the second thirtysomething to win the award after Darren Criss, the youngest winner at 31 when he triumphed for “The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story” in 2019. Prior to Criss, Gary Sinise was the youngest champ, having been 40 when he prevailed for “Truman” in 1996. Sinise nabbed a second statuette two years later for “George Wallace.”

Even 400 years after the death of William Shakespeare, his work still lives on. Not only are his plays still performed all around the world, but they also inspire artists to make their own versions. This is the case with Chen Hung-i and Muni Wei’s latest film “As We Like It”, for which they adapted the homonymous work, one of the bard’s pastoral comedies. The result of their first collaboration as co-directors is a bustling, bright film about love that had its world premiere at the International Film Festival Rotterdam.

“As You Like It” highlights the simple country life versus the complexity and stressfulness of cities and towns. At the same time, it tells the story of a power struggle at the court, but above all the play is a love story involving not one but four happy couples.

Chicago – Kenneth Branagh may be the ultimate hybrid. Hie reputation as an actor is beyond the pale … he is a performer that makes a film or stage play better. But beyond that, he has just directed his 23rd and most personal film. “Belfast” is an elegy to his hometown, but it is also a remembrance of when his life changed profoundly at the tender age of nine. Kenneth Branagh presented “Belfast” to an audience at the 57th Chicago International Film Festival on October 21st, 2021. He was photographed on the Red Carpet by Joe Arce.
The film is a memoir and a memory, fictionalized and stylized. In 1969, young Buddy (Jude Hill) witnesses the a quick and violent riot in the war between Catholics and Protestants in Belfast, Northern Ireland. This changes the dynamic in his family, as his Pa (Jamie Dornan) and Ma (Caitriona Balfe) are at a crossroads regarding staying in the city.

The actors talk about applause, auditions, how they fell in love with the theatre – and the extraordinary high of delivering the perfect line
David Oyelowo and Alfred Molina have been friends since they appeared together on screen in As You Like It directed by Kenneth Branagh in 2006. Molina now has a role in Oyelowo’s directorial debut, The Water Man, for Netflix. They swap stories about their stints with the Royal Shakespeare Company, explain what they have missed during theatres’ closure and, to start, remember when they first fell in love with the stage.
David Oyelowo: As a kid on a council estate, Shakespeare felt like something for other people. Then I saw Robert Lepage’s version of A Midsummer Night’s Dream at the National Theatre when I was a teenager. Timothy Spall was Bottom, a Cirque du Soleil contortionist was Puck. We were in the nosebleed seats but I understood everything about the play.

As We Like It screened at International Film Festival Rotterdam
“As You Like It” highlights the simple country life versus the complexity and stressfulness of cities and towns. At the same time, it tells the story of a power struggle at the court, but above all the play is a love story involving not one but four happy couples.

When eulogizing screen performers, we often look at an Academy Award as either the launchpad or the apex of an actor’s life. In the case of Cloris Leachman, who died Wednesday at the age of 94, her Oscar was just one milestone in the career of an exceedingly versatile character actress.
Leachman was honored over the years both for her dramatic intensity and for a comedy skillset that embraced neurotic tension and fearless physicality with equal grace. She not only lived to be a nonagenarian, but she also remained busy and in demand to the very end, with recent credits as a voice in “The Croods: A New Age” and on such shows as “Mad About You” and “American Gods.”
Born in Des Moines, Iowa, in 1926, Leachman studied at Northwestern (where her classmates included fellow comedy legends Paul Lynde and Charlotte Rae) before competing in the 1946 Miss America pageant. She...
