Former HD DVD adopters will experience a blast from the past today with Universal's announcement of Blu-ray + DVD "flipper" discs coming in 2010.
The dual-format discs will include the high definition version of a film on side A and the standard definition version on side B. This is unlike the current industry standard of including a separate disc for each version within the same package though perfectly identical to how Universal handled HD DVD before that format's demise.
The first round of flipper Blu-ray Discs are coming January 19 in the form of single release of The Bourne Identity, The Bourne Supremacy and The Bourne Ultimatum. These films were previously only available in high defintition packaged in a Blu-ray box set and the extensive bonus features from that set will carry forward into the single releases.
We do not know at this time if Universal intends to use flipper technology on new theatrical releases. »

I was just speaking to someone, explaining Blu-ray is definitely here to stay, but DVDs won’t be going anywhere. I said there will probably be a movement toward selling them together. I just never made the connection they could be on the same disc. Universal Studios has changed all of that.
News release from Universal …
In a move that is poised to elevate the Blu-ray™ Hi-Def format and provide consumers with the ultimate in convenience and viewing flexibility, Universal Studios Home Entertainment (Ushe) announced the introduction of groundbreaking dual-format discs containing both Blu-ray™ Hi-Def and DVD versions of some of Hollywood’s most iconic films. An industry first, the new “flipper” discs will launch on January 19, 2010 with the blockbuster superspy thrillers The Bourne Identity, The Bourne Supremacy and The Bourne Ultimatum, starring Matt Damon, premiering as individually packaged Blu-ray™ discs.

Universal Studios has announced a new type of dual-format disc they’re calling “Flipper” discs and it’ll launch in January with the Bourne movies. The discs will feature Blu-ray and DVD versions on each side of the same disc. According to the studio:
“Universal’s flipper discs are the perfect way for consumers to future-proof their collections while still enjoying their favorite movies on all their existing DVD players,” said Craig Kornblau, President of Universal Studios Home Entertainment. “The flipper disc offers an easy way for viewers to convert to Blu-ray now or at any time in the future, confident in the fact they will be able to experience their home entertainment purchases in the highest quality picture and sound when they do.”
This is one of those products that really should have launched when Blu-ray got released. But everything about the launch of Blu-ray was screwed up, it »

Matt Damon's upcoming Bourne sequel has been thrown into jeopardy - the action franchise's director has reportedly quit the project. Paul Greengrass joined the film series by taking charge of 2004's The Bourne Supremacy and he returned to direct a second sequel, The Bourne Ultimatum in 2007.
Damon recently announced he is working on a fourth movie, teaming up with Greengrass to develop an original story for the next installment in the popular series, which is based on the books by Robert Ludlum.
But the film has been thrown into doubt amid reports Greengrass has walked away from the project, according to Theplaylist website.
The site reports Greengrass quit after bosses at Hollywood studio Universal hired their own writer to look after the script, without consulting the director. »

The Playlist is reporting Paul Greengrass has bailed on directing a fourth Jason Bourne film.
The reasons given include the August revelation that Josh Zetumer was brought on by Universal to write what sounded like a completely new draft of the script following the one turned in by George Nolfi (The Bourne Ultimatum). Greengrass is said to have not been included in the decision.
Next is an apparent spat between director and studio regarding the ballooning cost of Greengrass's upcoming war film Green Zone which has bounced all over the release schedule and is now slated for a March 12, 201o release. Word is Greengrass has been reshooting and editing the picture and the price tag has continued to go up in the process.
Considering this is another war film set in the Middle East I can certainly understand the studio's concern. As The Playlist points out, Green Zone star Matt Damon revealed to Empire, »

I guess the next three DVD/Blu-ray previews I write up could also be looked at as potential gift guides as we are now counting our way down to Christmas. Perhaps you'll find a little something for yourself as well as someone on your list. Let's get into it...
A Christmas Tale (Criterion Collection) I just posted my review of the Blu-ray edition and it's a film I am already interested in revisiting and expect I will have a different reaction to each time. As it stands I enjoyed it, but wasn't completely bowled over and in terms of special features this one is a bit light when it comes to Criterion standards with only a making-of interview featurette and Desplechin's 2007 documentary about the selling of his family home, which is actually quite good. It seems that Jason Bourne will not return to the big screen as soon as it was expected. After the film's star Matt Damon informed that he was working on the script with director Paul Greengrass, the helmer has reportedly quit the untitled Bourne 4 project more than a week ago.
According to Playlist, Greengrass was not happy that Universal Pictures hired Joshua Zetumer to write what they call a "parallel" script without consulting it to him before. The "Ocean's Twelve" scribe George Nolfi was originally hired to pen the screenplay for this fourth "Bourne" film, but apparently no one liked his work.
On the other hand, the studio was getting frustrated with Greengrass' upcoming thriller "Green Zone", which costs almost $150 million. "Greengrass has reshot several times (gets expensive) and has been tinkering away in the editing room for months spending Universal's money and testing their patience," a source told the site. »

Paul Greengrass who directed The Bourne Supremacy and The Bourne Ultimatum and has been set to direct a fourth Bourne film is no longer interested in directing the next installment of the Ludlum series.
The Playlist is reporting that director Paul Greengrass has left the production of the fourth Jason Bourne film, which is currently in development at Universal Pictures.
It was said that there are currently two scripts for the project, one by The Bourne Ultimatum co-writer George Nolfi and another by Josh Zemuter. It seems that no one cares much for Nolfi’s script and Greengrass wasn’t happy when Zemuter was hired without consulting with him first. Greengrass is currently working on post-production of his latest film with star Matt Damon, The Green Zone, which was said to be in a bit of trouble itself with the budget escalating to $150 million, from its original $100 million budget.

This feature is part of the Naughts Project.
Quietly and unexpectedly, Matt Damon has become the premier Hollywood actor of the past decade. He's lent his minutely constructed, surprisingly athletic performances to the films of directors Steven Soderbergh, Gus Van Sant, Paul Greengrass, Martin Scorsese and Clint Eastwood, a roster that's not coincidentally produced some of the most vital and successful films of the past ten years.
His remarkable career isn't simply a matter of a good agent. It's all in the manner in which he so carefully adapts his particular skills to the roles.
Damon's commitment is displayed on his body, which he relentlessly crafts to the specifications of each character -- he's almost the anti-movie star in his physical malleability. Take a look at how he changes from "The Bourne Identity" in 2002 to the Farrelly Brothers' "Stuck On You," a year later. In the former, he carved himself down to muscle and bone, »

You'll have to pretend you're surprised at this next bit of news. Apparently there's trouble brewing in Bourne land again, and director Paul Greengrass may have just walked away from the fourth movie. Details are still a bit sketchy at the moment, and they've giving the old "creative differences" excuse, but it seems to be a result of increasing friction between Greengrass and the higher-ups at Universal. As you may know, The Bourne Ultimatum made over $440 million worldwide and earned rave reviews across the board, but production on the movie was reportedly a nightmare for just about everyone involved. Matt Damon had such a miserable experience that at one point he said there was no way he would return for another sequel. In the end, both Damon and Greengrass eventually signed on for part 4, and the project started development. In the meantime, the duo went off and shot Green Zone [1] together. »

The Playlist (who have become heavy hitters with exclusives) is reporting that director Paul Greengrass, the critically acclaimed helmer of The Bourne Supremacy, The Bourne Ultimatum, United 93, and the upcoming Iraq War-thriller Green Zone, will not be coming back for a fourth Jason Bourne adventure. The break apparently comes from two factors: Greengrass is upset at Universal because they didn’t consult him on who they hired to write the Bourne 4; likewise, Universal is upset at Greengrass because he’s turned Green Zone, which was supposed to be a small film to keep Greengrass happy in between Bourne flicks, into a $150 million Iraq War movie (which have never been a hit at the box office).
Obviously, after three films together, Matt Damon’s loyalty lies with Greengrass and wouldn’t even consider doing a 4th Bourne, “at least not without [Greengrass'] blessing and even then, it would have to be a spectacular script. »

Bourne 4 no more? That might be the case now that an important name has bowed out of the project. Paul Greengrass, the director for The Bourne Supremacy and The Bourne Ultimatum -- as well as Green Zone which sort of looks like Bourne: Overseas -- has walked out on the fourth, and yet-to-be-titled, Bourne movie. The news comes to us from the folks over at The Playlist, who say that Greengrass and Universal Studios called things quits last week. While the official story is that there were "creative difference," the real reason, as The Playlist explains, is money. While Bourne 4 has been in discussion for quite some time, the script has yet to be decided -- despite screenwriters George Nolfi (The Bourne Ultimatum) and Josh Zetumer (The Infiltrator) being hired to work on their own (separate) versions of the story. That might not have been a problem for Greengrass as »

If you've been following the very slow development progress on the fourth Bourne film, you know that it is (a) rather surprising that Matt Damon and Paul Greengrass agreed to come back and (b) fraught with uncertainty about how best to proceed. The latter has led to a dearth of news, and reading between the lines it has seemed like the involvement of the principals was pretty tenuous. Now the shaky nature of the project is being emphasized by the news that Greengrass has walked away from the film. The Playlist has the exclusive on the story for now, though as they say it's a bit surprising that this hasn't been a trade break. Quick recap of the history of the film: Damon and Greengrass did Green Zone together after The Bourne Ultimatum, and the schedule on that has become a bit drawn out, with the budget going north of $100m. »

With a calling card of 'celluloid excrement' – which he's applied to films from The Road to Fantastic Mr Fox and Watchmen – Fiore Mastracci is a critic so dreadful he's bordering on genius
A confession: I'm obsessed with a film critic. His name is Fiore Mastracci, and he's the worst film critic in the world. You know how some people are so bad they're good? Not Fiore. He's so bad, he's flipped all the way around, bypassed good, gone into bad again, come out the other end and dipped into genius.
He used to be my little secret. But no longer. His latest brilliant (ie awful) review – about Cormac McCarthy adaptation The Road – has hit the Twitterverse. He calls it "excrement on celluloid". He lambasts child actor Kodi Smit-McPhee for having a double-barrelled surname ("Why? Because we were going to be confused by all the other Kodi McPhees in Tinsel Town? »

Julia Stiles as the Black Cat? The web's been abuzz of late with news that the actress, who most recently starred in The Bourne Ultimatum, met with a casting company about the upcoming Spider-Man 4, according to Ugo.
It should be noted, however, that just about every actress on the planet has been reported as auditioning for the part, including Rachel McAdams and Romola Garai.
Moreover, Deadline Hollywood is reporting today that Anne Hathaway has been approached to star in the fourth installment. She is purportedly wanted for a starring role, but not to replace Kirsten Dunst.
Last week, McAdams debunked the rumor she met with producers over the role of Felicia Hardy/Black Cat, occasional nemesis and love interest of Spider-Man/Peter Parker. Garai, meanwhile, admitted to being among hundreds of actresses who had attended open auditions, but said she was not going to be cast in Spider-Man 4. »

When "The Bourne Ultimatum" hit theaters in 2007, it was a logical assumption that it would be the last film in the Bourne series. Then Matt Damon signed on for a fourth film last October.
We reported over the summer that Damon was stumped when it came to creating an attractive plot to the fourth installment in the series. He reached out to the audience with an open invitation to anyone who had a brilliant idea for the story.
Two months later, the problem seems to be solved. In a recent interview with Total Film, Damon revealed that he and director Paul Greengrass are working feverishly on putting together a script for "Bourne 4."
"Personally, selfishly, we'd all really like to do it," Damon said. The last thing he wants to do is create an awful fourth chapter to what has been an epic series of films. "But we »
