Over the past few days I’ve been posting “7 Days with Producer Dan Lin”. As I explained in the previous articles, I spoke at length with the Sherlock Holmes producer about not only his latest film, but everything he has in development. Since the conversation ran so long, I’ve decided to break up the interview into many smaller parts. I’ve already posted what he said about the Lego movie and Gangster Squad, as well as his thoughts on the Terminator Salvation ending and what’s up with future movies. For today’s article, I’ve got him talking about the Tom and Jerry movie and the animated Bone movie - which is based on the comic by Jeff Smith.
Regarding Tom and Jerry, Lin says it’s going to be live action/animation hybrid and he compared it what was done on Alvin and the Chipmunks and Scooby-Doo. …

On a recent edition of TV review show Film 2009, presenter Jonathan Ross bizarrely (and erroneously) bemoaned the lack of superhero films this year.
Well, 2008 may have had two blockbusters in the form of Iron Man and the headline-dominating entity that was The Dark Knight but this year certainly hasn't been devoid of superheroes on the screen or, more broadly, comic book movie adaptations.
We've had Watchmen and Wolverine along with a few other titles derived from lesser-known comics, not to mention several big movies that have also crossed over into the comic book realm through printed prequels and tie-ins.
So, let's take a look at this year's comic book movies - and then you get a chance to vote for the one you thought was the worst of the bunch.
First, the films whose characters and/or stories were derived from comics:
Watchmen
(Based on Alan Moore's comic series …

Ten films that didn't live up to expectations Ten Most Disappointing Films of 2009
This year I've decided I'm not going to write a "Worst of 2009" list. What's the point? If you must you can visit the review archives for 2009, sort by grade and find my reviews of Fanboys, The Last House on the Left, All About Steve and I Love You Beth Cooper and then fill in six of your choosing from the "D" section and be done with it. Instead, I'm going back to what I've done only one other time and going to take a look back at the films that ended up disappointing me on one lever or another.
This way I don't have to talk about The Marc Pease Experience or Bride Wars. Year One and Whiteout don't need further dicussion and neither does G.I. Joe: Rise of the Cobra of Fighting. Instead I can …

I can imagine Robert Zemeckis -- whose botched motion-capture animated features "The Polar Express" and "A Christmas Carol" were full of rubbery, dead-eyed, freakish-looking human constructs -- watching James Cameron's "Avatar" with an expression on his face not unlike F. Murray Abraham's Salieri listening to his first Mozart composition in "Amadeus."
From a technical standpoint, "Avatar" is a game-changer, a paradigm shift, the greatest thing since sliced "2001." In the same way that "The Matrix" and its technological advances reverberated over the ensuing decade, so will "Avatar" act as a bellwether for the next wave of effects-heavy genre films.
I just wish it were a better movie. For all of Cameron's soaring accomplishments in creating realistic motion-capture characters and his deft handling of the new era of 3D, "Avatar" feels both familiar and overlong. You've traveled this road before, even if now you're doing it in a blinged-out luxury …

With all the talk of James Cameron turning the Avatar story into a trilogy, the popular director has noted that the next rumored installment will not be a prequel. If you are wanting to see how Sam Worthington’s character, Jake Sully, lost the use of his legs, you’re out of luck…and you’re sick.
Earlier this month Cameron talked about the proposed follow-ups to Avatar and commented on what the cost might look at for the production.
“…in terms of the pitch it was: Ok, you’ve spent a lot of money on the first one; on the second one we’ll be able to amortize it [the CG assets] and focus on the story and all that … and they bought that,” says Cameron regarding the assets and technology that has already been produced for the first film. Having these in place would make follow-ups cheaper to make and could …

Director James Cameron is convinced Arnold Schwarzenegger will return to the big screen once his term as governor of California ends.
The action hero - who shot to international stardom in Cameron's 1984 movie The Terminator - swapped acting for politics when he was elected to office in California in 2003.
Schwarzenegger returned to the franchise created by Cameron with a cameo role in recent blockbuster Terminator Salvation, but did not shoot new footage - his appearance was compiled using old film from the first sci-fi blockbuster.
But Cameron is convinced that Schwarzenegger will return to showbusiness when his time in office comes to an end in 2010.
The moviemaker tells Fox News, "When he's done running the fifth largest economy in the world, he'll probably want to come back to acting. Although I can't speak for him, I know he loves it." …

Film-makers like James Cameron need to rediscover the fading art of storytelling
It cost hundreds of millions of dollars. It was four years in the making. Its facial performance capture system alone took 18 months to perfect. In spite of gloomy prognostications, the end product looks staggering. Nonetheless, Avatar fails in one rather important respect. By common consent, its story's rubbish.
On the face of it, that's odd. Transforming 3D technology was presumably quite a task. Investing an anorexic, alien giantess with sex appeal must have been something of a challenge. Keeping Fox's bean-counters from expiring in panic can't have been easy. In comparison, getting a decent script should have been a doddle. La's crawling with hotshot writers. Unlike almost everything else that this film required, they even come cheap.
Yet, instead of gorging on their services, James Cameron seems to have lifted Avatar's story from the movie-maker's trashcan. Even …

James Cameron'S new movie Avatar is now enjoying its first weekend of release.
It's showing at regular cinemas in conventional 2D or, where venues have the facilities, in 3D. And it's also available in 3D on the giant, immersive screens at IMAX venues.
Well, the best way to see a sci-fi spectacle like this is obviously going to be in IMAX 3D so, with the aid of press tickets, I headed to nearby Birmingham's Thinktank IMAX screen.
So how does it perform, does it live up to the hype and anticipation of all the trailers, will it really bring about a cinematic revolution? I joined the long lines of people waiting for over an hour before the fully-booked performances and put on my 3D goggles to find out...
By now most people will have seen the trailers all over the internet and also on television (not just as commercials …

If only the year in movies was one three-minute music video montage of memorable moments. Instead, some of the images we'll remember were from bad movie, just like it is in every year.
But now is no the time to separate the good from the bad. In a new video assembled by Zack Young, the year in movies is set to Acarde Fire's "Wake Up," and the effects of Avatar are side-by-side with 2012 and A Serious Man mingles with a way too serious Christian Bale in Terminator Salvation. And even though I think the year as a whole is less impressive than previous years (particularly here in awards season, where most of the contenders are coming up short), this is still a fantastic way to spend a few minutes.
Young does a great editing job here; it's not just clips randomly thrown together, which given the number of films represented, …

Public Enemies (Universal) Johnny Depp portrays legendary Depression-era bank robber John Dillinger in co- writer/director Michael Mann’s take on America’s first “Public Enemy Number One.” Like many big studio releases today, Public Enemies has it all: A-list talent before and behind the camera, but lacks a heart or soul that allows its audience to connect with it. Film plays out like a “true crime” TV show with re-enactments of famous events cast with top actors and shot by the best technicians in the business, with little, if any, character or story development to hold it together in between. A real disappointment from one of our finest filmmakers and finest actors. The lone standout: the great character actor Stephen Lang as a hard-eyed lawman who’s seen a lot, but manages to retain a tiny piece of his heart. For a better take on the same subject, …

James Cameron has said that Terminator Salvation, the fourth entry in the Terminator series that Cameron created, lacked originality according to an interview with Ugo.
“Interestingly, I think McG did a good job in the sense… I think he was almost too referential to the mythos of the first and second film. He over-quoted them in a way,” says Cameron.
During production of Salvation, McG personally sought James Cameron’s approval on the production. He didn’t give it but wished him luck.
“It didn’t feel to me to be enough of a reinvention. The thing we did with [Terminator 2: Judgment Day] is that we reinvented the first film completely; spun it on its ass and made the Terminator the good guy, and came up with a whole new concept for a villain, it felt fresh,” Cameron said. Judgment Day was also groundbreaking in its effects.
He added: “I didn’t feel …

Avatar Written and Directed by: James Cameron Starring: Sam Worthington, Sigourney Weaver, Zoe Saldana, Giovanni Ribisi, Michelle Rodriguez, Joel Moore We've been waiting for over a decade now to see James Cameron return to the world of big budget filmmaking. After Titanic there was simply nothing left for him to conquer, and everyone knows that the one thing that drives James Cameron is a challenge. Now that technology has had time to progress to the next stage, he has finally decided to up the ante all over again. Despite Cameron's untarnished track record, many questions remained. Had he been away from the game too long? Was the hype starting to exceed all reasonable expectations? And was he asking too much of audiences to embrace a strange new world when they've grown accustomed to so many familiar sequels, remakes and spin-offs? Valid questions, perhaps, and yet they quickly fade away after …

I'm not a big believer in midnight box office numbers. They're not a good indicator of overall box office life, only of immediate heat, and they're even less reliable than standard opening weekend numbers. With that in mind, I think everone expected more from Avatar.
James Cameron's new film only took in $3 million overnight in the Us and Canada, according to Deadline Hollywood, which points out that's about half of what Star Wars did and is roughly equivalent to Terminator Salvation.
Again, midnight numbers don't mean much unless you're Twilight and you're throwing all your weight behind the first three days. Star Trek didn't do that and neither is Avatar. Fox and Cameron know it will take time to grow an audience, whereas Summit is fully aware that New Moon has a pretty low conversion rate of non-Twihards so why not blast them as much as early as possible? …

Bad news comes in threes, but I'm not totally convinced the latest cancellation on Disney's theatrical release schedule is actually bad news. It all depends on your fondness for John Travolta, William H Macy, Tim Allen and Martin Lawrence in leather on hogs. If you're a fan of Wild Hogs, then news that Disney's put an end to Wild Hogs 2: Bachelor Ride might dampen your holiday spirit a wee bit.
Disney has in fact decided to put the hogs out to pasture, at least for now. The cancellation of Wild Hogs 2 comes on the heels of news that Disney honcho Rich Ross has also opted not to move forward on the Robin Williams/Anna Faris comedy Wedding Banned. Williams and Wild Hogs star Travolta starred in Disney's Old Dogs, which hit theaters on November 25th to a less than enthusiastic response. Critics didn't like it and audiences didn't buy …
