In an alignment of two of the most powerful forces in Spanish- language fiction, Javier Ambrossi and Javier Calvo, creators of “Veneno” and producers of “Cardo,” have joined forces with Movistar Plus, the pay TV/SVOD of Telefonica, to develop and produce a new series, “La Mesías.”
Presented on Tuesday in Madrid, like “Veneno,” the series has been written by Los Javis – as they are popularly known in Spain – and, according to Javier Ambrossi, the scale of the series marks the natural “next step” in the growth of Suma Content.
A Movistar Plus original series, the series will be written, directed and produced by Ambrossi and Calvo and made in collaboration with Suma Content, their new production label launched last year.
Movistar Plus International will handle international distribution of what rates from the get-go as one of the hottest Spanish series which will be brought onto the global market this year.

BlackOps Studios Asia from the Philippines, Story Arch Pictures from the U.S. and Agog Film from Hong Kong have joined forces to develop, produce and finance a slate of genre movies that target the streaming marketplace.
The 16-title slate comprises nine films and seven series in the action, horror and sci-fi genres, with 11 flowing from BlackOps, two from Story Arch and three from Agog. The lineup is being unveiled this week at the European Film Market, the online companion to the in-person Berlin Film Festival.
The slate has development support from the Philippines-based creative agency Psyops8 and is expected to tap into incentives and location support from the Film Development Council of the Philippines (Fdcp). Leading Philippines media group Abs-cbn has already come on board “Sellblock,” a prison-set action drama that is one of the first titles to emerge from BlackOps stable and is now in pre-production.

In a sign of just how much the film and TV industry has evolved over the past few years, 25% of participants at the Malaga Festival’s new Spanish Screenings Xxl will represent in one way or another VOD platforms, the organizers announced Tuesday.
After taking place in November 2020 and October 2021 during two years of pandemic, Malaga’s leg of the 2022 Spanish Screenings Xxl will take place over March 21-24 as part of an even larger Malaga Festival Industry Zone (Mafiz).
In line with the Unifrance Rendez-Vous in Paris a fortnight ago, the event will expand to take in not only recent Spanish movies but series, animation and, in the case of the Spanish Screenings, straight to digital formats.
“Not just features get sold these days,” said Malaga Festival director Juan Antonio Vigar. “Spain is beginning to be a reference in the production of series, documentaries, animation, digital creators and talent.

Geneva-based TV ratings analysis company The Wit has presented at MipCancun what it deems to be the current and potential buzz titles in Latin America.
Speaking to Variety, The Wit’s managing director Caroline Servy identified at least three trending themes: Empowered women, socially conscious stories and edgy elevated fiction, predominantly made by streamers, that “cuts through the clutter.”
Also ruling the field are bio-series with the latest led by “Maradona: Blessed Dream,” which broke recent records on Argentina’s Canal 9 before bowing worldwide on Amazon Prime on October 29.
Turkish series are wildly popular in the region but not as widely distributed by the major broadcasters in Brazil and Mexico, which are prodigious telenovela producers themselves, Servy noted. Expectations are high for Turkey’s number one show “Yargi” (“Family Secrets”), distributed by Madd Entertainment, which pits a defense lawyer against a prosecutor in a murder case involving their respective families.

Movistar Plus, the streaming and broadcast arm of Spanish telco giant Telefonica, has confirmed a breathtaking roster of talent which will helm its upcoming five-part anthology series “Apagón,” produced by Buendía Estudios.
Inspired by the popular “El gran apagón” podcast, the series features five stand-alone stories, connected only in that they take place after a solar flair causes a worldwide blackout – “apagón” in Spanish – and deals with the consequences that such a catastrophe might impose.
The series’ impressive lineup of writing talent was first announced in June of this year, and Movistar has today confirmed that award-winning directors Rodrigo Sorogoyen, Alberto Rodríguez, Raúl Arévalo, Isa Campo, and Isaki Lacuesta will helm the five stories. For the first two filmmakers, the series is a return to Movistar Plus. Held online over Oct. 20-22, 2021’s Spanish Screenings-Málaga de Cine mark Spain’s biggest national cinema showcase anywhere in the world, its equivalent of UniFrance’s Paris Rendez-vous. 113 recent Spanish titles were made available to 218 carefully-targeted international buyers, distributors and fest heads with a record of screening movies from Spain. Such a spectacular smorgasbord also says much about Spanish production trends and the state of the international market at large. Six takes on this year’s screenings:
A Sign of the Times
Last year, Malaga unveiled 20 market premieres. This year, the number were way down, with screenings dominated by titles brought onto the market as finished films at Cannes, Toronto and San Sebastian. That’s a sign of the times. With a huge international distributor release bottleneck, sales agents used the Spanish Screenings to wring more sales out of the titles they did have, rather than bringing new titles onto a clogged market.

WarnerMedia has been rolling out HBO Max around the world over the last few months and has been ramping up the number of international originals that it orders.
The company has now revealed that it is launching its first international original day-and-date in the U.S. and globally and has plans for more.

It brings the streamer in line with rivals such as Netflix, Amazon and Apple in terms of launching shows in all of its markets at the same time, giving series the opportunity to create a global buzz on social media and replicate the success of breakout local-language hits such as Netflix’s Squid Game.

Spanish showrunners Javier Calvo and Javier Ambrossi, popularly known as Los Javis, are launching Suma Content, a new, Madrid-based but internationally operating independent production company which will replace their current, smaller label, Suma Latina.
The pair are already superstars in Spain and their star is rising abroad. They’re responsible for several recent hit productions including the Atresplayer Premium original series “Veneno,” sold to HBO Max in the U.S., and Netflix pickup “Paquita Salas,” and are regular contributors on the unscripted scene having appeared on Spain’s legendary singing competition “Operación Triunfo” and the recently launched “Drag Race España,” among others.
As the partners’ public profile flourished, it became clear that their operations had outgrown their existing production arrangements which often limited their output. One high-end drama series per year was no longer enough to satiate their ambitions, so a new arrangement was needed.

Barring the back-and-forth surrounding the film’s relation to the McU – or lack thereof – Venom has piqued the curiosity of comic book fans the world over thanks to Sony and Ruben Fleischer’s desire to engineer a dark and potentially R-rated Spider-Man spinoff. There’s someone else though who’s also responsible for much of the intrigue surrounding the pic, and that’d be Dunkirk star Tom Hardy.
In fact, he’s one of the few shining lights in what’s otherwise become a controversial project, one that many fans feel is simply unnecessary. It's being reported that Rogue One: A Star Wars Story star Riz Ahmed is in early talks to join Sony’s Venom movie. This news comes with some conflicting reports on who exactly he will be playing in the movie. That may or may not be Carnage, who will be the main villain in the film.
Variety is saying that he will be playing "a popular Marvel character." However, they don't indicate on who that character could be. Then there's THR, who makes a point of saying that it won't be Carnage, even though that's the character Sony Pictures has been looking to cast.
Ahmed was rumored to have been considered for the part of Carnage and according to another report from The Tracking Board, sources say that the production team is "torn as to whether he’ll ultimately play that character or a different one."

Jon Watts chats to us about Spider-Man: Homecoming, sequels, Vulture, Tony Stark, Venom, Stan Lee, Marc Webb and more...
Back in 2015, I spoke to Jon Watts via an international phone line. I was at home, and he was deeply entrenched in Marvel Studios, beginning work on the film we later came to know as Spider-Man: Homecoming. The main topic of discussion back then was his Kevin Bacon-featuring micro budget thriller, Cop Car.
A year and bit later, on a blisteringly hot June day, Watts and I met for real in a swanky London hotel. He was just as lovely in real life as he was on the blower, enthusiastically chatting about Homecoming, the future of Spidey at the cinema, and a number of other projects. Here’s the transcript...
[Nb: this interview took place before all the 'Venom is in the McU'/'no it isn't' hoohah.]
In the press notes, one thing jumped out at me: apparently you made stick-figure videos while Marvel...

We’ve got a trailer for an interesting new film coming out called Billionaire Ransom which features a bunch of spoiled rich young adults whose parents have them snatched out of their privileged lives and taken to an island where they will learn to change their bad behavior. That island is then taken over by a group of mercenaries who take them hostage and are holding them for ransom. The kids are then forced into a situation where they have to fight back and survive. I guess who you root for in this movie all depends on your opinion of rich people. Here’s the synopsis:
The story follows a group of over-privileged, out-of-control young adults who have been sent by their frustrated, billionaire parents to a tough-love wilderness school on a remote island off the coast of Scotland. Kyle (Sumpter) and Amy (Tonkin) find themselves in this group as...

It took 20th Century Fox 14 years, but with last year’s X-Men: Days of Future Past, they finally delivered the movie that X-Men fans had been impatiently waiting for since 2000. Now, in 2015, Fox hopes to revive their other, more desperate, superhero franchise with this summer’s Fantastic Four. Using the same apocalyptic tones and brooding masochism made famous by Bryan Singer’s X-Men, Fox is hoping that their third go-around with the oft-troubled franchise will prove to be the charm. But, based on the failures of previous Fantastic Four films, the barrage of trailers and press releases for the new flick, and the entire history of the comic book series, Fantastic Four may inevitably be doomed from the start.
As a series, The Fantastic Four has proven to be one of Marvel’s more inconsequential title to readers, as well as one of its most inaccessible to writers. Ever since...

The latest issue of Metal Hammer magazine was already shaping up to be a special one, with Slipknot's Corey Taylor guest-editing the issue, but it became an absolute dream for metal and horror fans when Taylor asked The Walking Dead comic book artist Charlie Adlard to illustrate the cover and participate in an exclusive interview. We take a look at that cover (and the behind-the-scenes process of its creation) in our latest round-up, in addition to details on the feature film adaptation of Joe Kelly and Ken Niimura's I Kill Giants graphic novel and Arrow Video's impressive limited edition Blu-ray/DVD release of Society.
Charlie Adlard's Metal Hammer Magazine: "Charlie Adlard – acclaimed illustrator from the Walking Dead comics – has designed Metal Hammer magazine’s special gatefold front cover with Exclusive artwork of every member of Slipknot. Trust us, it looks badass.

A quick review of tonight's "Gotham" coming up just as soon as I chug some milk... The great thing about a character with 75 years of history across multiple media is the abundance of many stories, ideas and supporting characters to draw upon. The tricky thing is figuring out which of those stories, ideas and characters actually fit together. You wouldn't want to deposit the Mutant Leader from "Dark Knight Returns" into a story featuring the Adam West Batman any more than you would try to insert Bat-Mite into "Batman: Year One." There's no element of "Viper" that, in isolation, feels like it doesn't belong in the Batman mythos. The Maroni/Falcone gang war is familiar, the notion of Wayne Industries turning corrupt without Thomas and Martha to shepherd it has promise as a direction for Lil Wayne's corner of the show, and the Viper drug is tied to Venom,...

Cursed (2005)
Written by Kevin Williamson
Directed by Wes Craven
Cast: Christina Ricci (Ellie), Joshua Jackson (Jake), Jesse Eisenberg (Jimmy), Milo Ventimiglia (Bo), Judy Greer (Joanie), Scott Baio (Himself), Craig Kilborne (Himself), Portia de Rossi (Zela), Mya (Jenny), Shannon Elizabeth (Becky), Derek Mears (Werewolf)
Here I am once more, potentially defending something that is much maligned as a catastrophic fail. I often find myself having to do that for films, (sequels especially) that did not find a collective acceptance among its target audience. Friday the 13th part 5, Halloween 3, Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2, just to name a few. “Cursed” stands alone, but still made a difficult road for itself by being part of a genre that has had its share of epic triumphs and hard disappointments. Werewolf films have broken new ground with “An American Werewolf in London” with its landmark special effects, and “The Howling” with...

While everyone usually keeps I Know What You Did Last Summer close to their horror-loving hearts as the best genre flick from director Jim Gillespie, we kind of prefer 2005's voodoo freakshow Venom. Neither was really good, but at least Venom had gore.
In any event Deadline is reporting that Gillespie is back with a new teen driven thriller, Take Down. Scripted by Ransom screenwriter Alexander Ignon, the story follows a group of privileged international teens who fight back when their remote boarding school is besieged by armed kidnappers.
Casting begins soon ahead of a UK shoot this fall, and Ignon is already scripting a sequel with an eye toward franchise opportunities.
More soon.

Jim Gillespie is returning to the thriller scene for his first project since 2005's Venom. According to Variety, he'll next helm Take Down, a film "about a group of rich youngsters trying to defeat criminals who are to abduct them from far-flung boarding school." The director made his feature debut in the '90s with I Know What You Did Last Summer. He followed that up with D-Tox, starring Sylvestor Stallone.

Deadline says that the director of I Know What You Did Last Summer, Jim Gillespie, will be directing a film called Take Down, written by Alexander Ignon (Ransom). The film will be Gillespie’s first since 2005′s Venom, a slasher film set in the swamps of Louisiana.
Here’s the plot:
Take Down follows a group of privileged international teens who fight back when their remote boarding school is besieged by armed kidnappers.
Casting will begin soon and the intent is to shoot in the U.K. this fall. Screenwriter Ignon is already writing a sequel to make room for a franchise opportunity.
The storyline sounds a lot like Red Dawn to me. Also, it doesn’t play to Gillespies strength, which seems to be the good old 90′s slasher. The storyline doesn’t sound like one that fits into a slasher film either. It does however, involve a young cast.

Jim Gillespie ("I Know What You Did Last Summer," "Venom") has signed on to direct the "Toy Soldiers"-esque thriller "Take Down".
"Ransom" scribe Alexander Ignon penned the story which takes place at a boarding school for the rebellious children of billionaires.
When the "tough-love" school is taken hostage by sophisticated group of criminals, the teenagers take matters into their own hands.
Ed Elbert and Sarah Ryan Black will produce. Shooting kicks off in the UK this Fall with an international cast of young actors being sought.

A Planet Fury-approved selection of notable genre DVD releases for the month of January.
Lightning Bug (2004) Image Entertainment Blu-ray and DVD Available Now
Effects guru Robert Hall’s semi-autobiographical film about a small town teen (Reaper's Bret Harrison) who has aspirations to become a special effects artist. An opportunity to manage the town’s local haunted house is thwarted by his alcoholic stepfather and the staunchly religious views of the surrounding population. The solid supporting cast includes That 70’s Show’s Laura Prepon, Hellraiser’s Ashely Lawrence and Kevin Gage. Written and directed by Hall, it’s an affectionate coming-of-age drama that works in spite of an uneven narrative that falls apart in the final half hour. Hopefully this new extended cut will remedy the scripting problems of the original release.
Special Features include:
* Never-before-released extended cut of the film.
* Making-of Featurette
* Audio commentaries with the writer/director and cast.

Around two months ago I found myself at a press screening of Joss Whedon’s wonderful Cabin in the Woods; a film that, for me, will take some beating within the horror genre of 2012. However, half of my night’s entourage – two up and coming horror directors – were unimpressed, stating that they felt the film 'was flat with little to no imagination'.
Had they not seen the same film as myself? What more could writer-producer Whedon and writer-director Drew Goddard have done – heck, the guys had seamlessly infused horror and subtle comic timing, a stumbling block for many of the top directors. Anyhow, after further discussion we agreed to disagree…it was clear that both had sustained head-injuries at some point – possibly due to a butter-fingered nanny or an infantile love of stair parkour – but let’s not get bogged down with specifics…

I fell in love with Agnes Bruckner the moment I checked out Venom. She’s absolutely gorgeous, likeable on screen and a genuine natural talent (as it turns out, she’s also a sweetheart away from work too!). The woman can act and draw the drool from a man’s gaping mouth simultaneously, and that’s quite the accomplishment. I can say that with confidence, because I’m not typically smitten by actresses, but Bruckner had me wrapped around her finger in moments. The fact that she’s a stellar thespian to boot only adds to her mystique.
