The Hatchet Q & A from the Cinefamily Screening

31 October 2009 | shocktillyoudrop.com | See recent shocktillyoudrop news »

On Thursday October 29th, as a special Halloween surprise, Hatchet was added last minute as part of a triple feature to Slasherpalooza, an event sponsored by Bloody-Disgusting which took place at The Cinefamily (aka the Silent Movie Theater) here in Los Angeles, California. On hand for a post-screening Q & A was writer/director Adam Green, stars Tamara Feldman (Mary Beth), Joleigh Fioravanti (Jenna) and composer Andy Garfield. The following is a transcription of the entire Q & A, which was moderated by Marcus Dunstan, screenwriter of the Feast films, as well as Saw IV , Saw V and Saw VI . Marcus Dunstan: In honor of Halloween, this is a two part question. Firstly, what is your favorite horror movie? And second question is a little more layered. Why do you love the... »

Screamfest La’s The House of the Devil Premiere Report

22 October 2009 2:10 PM, PDT | DreadCentral.com | See recent Dread Central news »

This scribe hit Rachel Belofsky’s Screamfest La in Hollywood, CA, last night (as I do every night – extensive video and stills below), where Ti West, the director of The House of the Devil (review here) (screening as the fest’s "Centerpiece Film"), talked up his new series "Dead and Lonely", which begins airing on IFC Monday, October 26th, as well as the dust-up surroundng his Cabin Fever 2 (sort of).

Star of The House of the Devil Jocelin Donahue chimed in about her role in West’s legitimate recreation of early 80’s horror as seen in The House of the Devil , and Icelandic director Julius Kemp of the Reykjavik Whale Watching Massacre (the film plays at Screamfest La tonight) spilled on the distribution of that film (which will be at Afm – hopefully American audiences will see it soon).

Excl: Saw VI 's Marcus Dunstan & Patrick Melton

20 October 2009 | shocktillyoudrop.com | See recent shocktillyoudrop news »

They're not allowed to publicly speak about what went wrong with Saw V , which was critically torn asunder, even by the most devout fans of the series, like it was a victim of Jigsaw's many traps, but writers Marcus Dunstan and Patrick Melton will gladly talk to you about how Saw VI is an improvement. This latest entry, directed by series editor Kevin Greutert (making his directorial debut) and coming to theaters October 23, is the third Saw film penned by the duo, also behind this summer's The Collector and the Feast trilogy. They've had the unenviable task of picking up a storyline which found its principle antagonist, Jigsaw (aka John Kramer) dead. For Saw IV they deftly met that challenge head-on by telling a story than ran parallel to Saw III . In Saw V ,... »

Fall Frights: Feast (Film Review)

4 October 2009 3:12 AM, PDT | Fangoria | See recent Fangoria news »

In the spirit of Halloween '09, we're breaking out reviews (some new, some old) of some Fall Frights you may want to work into your monthly viewing.

Feast - Fangoria Archives: Originally Published 9/2006

At long last, the bygone era of the 1980s creature feature has made its long-delayed and splashy return to the big screen with John Gulager’s Feast, a rock-’em-sock-’em gross-out bloodbath that echoes the days of Evil Dead II, Return Of The Living Dead and maybe a smidgen of Gargoyles. But here’s the heartbreaker: It’s apparent this film is the malicious, placenta-devouring offspring of three individuals (Gulager and writers Marcus Dunstan and Patrick Melton) who have created something—thanks to Project Greenlight—expressing their fervid obsession with the genre. However, it just falls short of delivering the double-barrel blast of cult flavor that would make this one an eternal midnight fix. Gulager came close, »

Weekend Report: Moviegoers Feast on 'Meatballs,' Slim Pickings for 'Jennifer'

21 September 2009 12:31 PM, PDT | Box Office Mojo | See recent BoxOfficeMojo.com news »

Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs landed with a sunny $30.3 million and led the weekend as a whole to a 14 percent bump over the same timeframe last year. The other new releases, however, weren't pretty, especially Jennifer's Body, which had an advertising campaign that made the mistake of going gaga for its hyped actress. Storming approximately 4,500 screens at 3,119 sites, Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs served up the highest-grossing September animation debut on record, topping Sony Pictures stable mate Open Season. Nearly $18 million of Cloudy's opening was from 3D presentations at 1,828 sites. Of the 3D presentations, 127 were in IMAX and they accounted for $2.4 million of the gross. While Cloudy paled compared to recent 3D pictures like Up and Monsters Vs. Aliens, its debut was a bit higher than Bolt and Meet the Robinsons. Due to the higher ticket prices of 3D and IMAX, Cloudy had a smaller audience than regular movies that open to $30 million, »

Down on the Albino Farm

15 September 2009 2:23 PM, PDT | Fangoria | See recent Fangoria news »

Horror cinema has for some time mined folklore for inspiration, whether it be Eastern Europe’s belief in vampirism or Mexico’s love affair with the goat-sucking chupacabra. American filmmakers Sean McEwen and Joe Anderson, whose feature Albino Farm hits DVD September 22 from Mti Home Video, followed suit in crafting their backwoods fright feature.

“One of the original ideas we kept coming back to,” McEwen tells Fango on the set, “was based on an actual legend specific to southern Missouri and the Ozarks about the ‘albino farm.’ There was a good foundation for a story, but it definitely needed a lot of meat put on its bones, which also gave us the opportunity to really take the creative ball and run with it.”

To help explain the urban legend from which the film’s storyline is derived (while driving to southern Missouri on a “travel day” following the previous evening’s lightning strike, »

Children of the Corn Remake in the Works

7 September 2009 5:00 PM, PDT | WorstPreviews.com | See recent Worst Previews news »

Back in October, Dimension Films revealed that it was planning to greenlight eighteen direct-to-video films, including remakes, sequels and prequel to "Pulse," "Feast," "Hell Ride" and "Children of the Corn." Now, Bob Weinstein from The Weinstein Company has revealed that the "Children of the Corn" remake will soon be heading to theaters and that Ehren Kruger (The Skeleton Key, The Ring) has already been hired to adapt the Stephen King short story. "We felt the 1984 film was a missed opportunity," said Weinstein. "If you read the short story, it's got such a strong feeling to it and there's this religious overtone to it as well. Ehren wants to hit it hard. It's popular in Hollywood to say you re-envisioning a project but a lot of the time they're just carbon copying the original. We are bringing something new to the story." Event Report: World Premiere of Rob Zombie's Halloween 2

25 August 2009 9:47 PM, PDT | DreadCentral.com | See recent Dread Central news »

Dread just got back from the world premiere of Rob Zombie's Halloween II (held last night at Mann's Chinese in Hollywood, Ca) as well as the ensuing after-party which took place at Mood on Hollywood Boulevard, and while it really wasn't much of a work night for this scribe, I figured I’d be remiss if I didn't provide at least a bit of ocular coverage.

Playing to a packed and enthusiastic crowd, Halloween II writer and director Zombie was mobbed by paparazzi and fans alike post-show. On hand for the screening and following soiree (and sipping such film-inspired concoctions as the ‘Halloween Twist’ and the ‘Black Widow’) were H2 stars Tyler Mane, Scout Taylor Compton, Malcolm McDowell, Sheri Moon Zombie and series alumna Danielle Harris (among others), as were Zombie stables Sybil Danning and Daniel Roebuck. Horror notables in attendance also included Patrick Melton and Marcus Dunstan (the boys »

Updated: Check In 'Clive Barker's Hotel'

19 August 2009 6:50 PM, PDT | FEARnet | See recent FEARnet news »

Updated 9/19/09: It's official -- ABC has picked up the Clive Barker's Hotel script, beating out Fox and several other networks. According to Reuters.com, "Barker is attached as a producer, and filmmaker McG's Wonderland Sound and Vision banner is in talks to produce. McG could come on board as a director if the project moves forward." Some interesting news out of THR's Risky Business Blog today that Marcus Dunstan and Patrick Melton (Feast, Saw series, The Collector) have sold a pitch to Warner Bros. Television just off of the title Clive Barker's Hotel. Since this is in Really early stages of development, I have to admit that the idea of a new televised horror anthology series from Clive... »

Clive Barker's Hotel Finds a Network

19 August 2009 | shocktillyoudrop.com | See recent shocktillyoudrop news »

Clive Barker's Hotel , the potential series being guided by Barker, Joe Daley, Warner Bros. TV and McG's Wonderland Sound and Vision that we told you about last week , has found a home at ABC. The network picked up the script by Marcus Dunstan and Patrick Melton (of the Saw and Feast series), beating out Fox and others. The script centers on a series of ghoulish incidents at a haunted hotel. Here's to hoping someone can bring "horror" back to television. Supernatural is good and all, but the small screen needs a big injection of frights that others have tried and failed at doing. »

Clive Barker's Hotel checks in at ABC

19 August 2009 1:44 AM, PDT | Corona's Coming Attractions | See recent Corona's Coming Attractions news »

ABC has outbid several rival networks and has won the opportunity to make a pilot for a horror series called Clive Barker's Hotel. The script is written by Saw IV, V and VI writers Marcus Dunstan and Patrick Melton and Terminator Salvation director McG is in talks to produce and possibly direct the show.

Details are slim at this early stage but the setting is at a haunted hotel where "ghoulish incidents" have occured.

Dunstan and Melton hooked up with Barker when the writers were hired to do a draft for a remake of Hellraiser that's stuck in development hell at Dimension. The horror scribes have been working non-stop on the next Saw trilogy since winning the third and final Project Greenlight competition with their script for Feast. McG likely got involved due to his Wonderland Sound and Vision company's success with The CW's Supernatural TV series, now about to enter its fifth season. »

ABC Checks into Clive Barker’s Hotel

18 August 2009 9:52 PM, PDT | Beyond Hollywood | See recent Beyond Hollywood news »

So what makes the new show Clive Barker’s Hotel so scary? Well for one, their free towels are itchy and they don’t make your bed. Talk about horrific! But perhaps Clive Barker can conjure up more terrifying stories with the help of “Feast” writers Marcus Dunstan and Patrick Melton, who along with Barker have sold the script for Clive Barker’s Hotel (the full title) to ABC, who outbid Fox and Warner Bros. to get into the Clive Barker biz. According to THR, the script centers on a series of ghoulish incidents at a haunted hotel. Which goes without saying. I mean, it’s got Clive Barker’s name in the title, for crying out loud. What else is going to happen at this hotel but ghoulish and bad things? Since his name is already a part of the title, Clive Barker will of course produce, and it »

Top 5 Films w/ ‘Collector’ Director Marcus Dunstan

3 August 2009 2:00 PM, PDT | FilmSchoolRejects.com | See recent FilmSchoolRejects news »

Editor's Note: Marcus Dunstan got his start with writing partner Patrick Melton when they won Project Greenlight for their original screenplay Feast. He continued on the dream career path co-writing Saw IV, Saw V, and the upcoming Saw VI. His directorial debut, The Collector, hit theaters on Friday, so we thought it would be fun to have Dunstan share his Top 5 Films with us. The parameters aren't exactly defined, like most things here at Fsr, so it's unclear whether these are his Desert Island Movies, the five that most inspired him, or the five that simply hit him the hardest. Luckily, in his own words, Dunstan offers up what he calls... The Five Films That Keep Comin' Back There are days made bad when a tire goes flat. There are days made devastating with tragedy or when a loved one passes. Then there is a particular kind of bad day that can only be categorized as a »

Review: The Collector

1 August 2009 7:02 AM, PDT | Cinematical | See recent Cinematical news »

The new horror film The Collector doesn't dilute its intense scenes with comedy or cartoonish visuals: it goes straight for the shocks. The pre-credits teaser scene gets your adrenalin going without visible bloodshed, and prepares you for something suspenseful and a bit strange. To set your expectations, it might help to know that writer Patrick Melton and co-writer/director Marcus Dunstan also scripted the Feast films and the third through sixth Saw films. In fact, the script was once considered for a Saw prequel film. Now you know what you might be getting into in terms of horror style.

The first 20 minutes of the film start a little awkwardly -- it takes a few minutes to figure out who's who -- but then the stage is set for major suspense and scares. Arkin (Josh Stewart) finishes a contractor job at a family's fancy house in the country. He's not paid »
