Disney co-production said to be inspired by original High School Musical, rather than a direct translation
阅读中文 | Read this in Chinese
One has millions of devoted adherents, a doctrine of clean-cut conformity and an unstoppable, culture-changing momentum; the other is communist China. Now, in a particularly fitting match, two of the most persuasive ideologies of recent times are to unite: the Disney franchise High School Musical is being remade for a Chinese audience.
Four years after the first film in the series hit the screens, achieving a staggering popularity among pre-teens worldwide, the Us entertainment giant has announced that it is remaking the film with Chinese partners for release next summer. The news comes weeks after Disney said Chinese authorities had approved plans for a theme park in Shanghai.
High School Musical, the first film in the series, was launched as a made-for-tv movie by Disney in January 2006 and has

Taylor Schilling -- get used to the name. Schilling is a New York actress who considers herself far from a newcomer, but just landed what could be her breakout gig. She stars on NBC's freshman drama, Mercy, which will premiere on Sept. 23. Mercy casts her as Veronica, a fiery nurse who's back from Iraq, where she saw and did it all, and thus has little patience for the indecisive doctors at the New Jersey hospital where she now works. Her fellow nurses include Chloe (Michelle Trachtenberg) and Sonia (Jamie Lee Kirchner), and then there's the freshly arrived doctor (James Tupper) who she just happened to romance in Iraq. And did we mention that Veronica has an estranged husband (Diego Klattenhoff) itching for a reunion and also a lush of a mom (Kate Mulgrew)? PopStar caught up with Schilling by telephone for the following exclusive interview in which she discussed winning the role,

NBC Shakes Up Schedule With Six New Scripted Series

Chicago – NBC held a special “in-front” announcement yesterday, two weeks in front of the standard upfront presentations and revealed six news series for the fall while leaving some beloved programs up in the air. On the bubble shows “Southland” and “Heroes” were renewed, but the jury is still out on “Chuck,” “Medium,” “Law & Order,” and “My Name is Earl”.
Of course, the focus of the peacock network in yesterday’s presentation was on “The Jay Leno Show,” which will air five nights a week in primetime, reducing time slots for new and returning programming. Consequently, if your favorite show doesn’t make it to the fall, blame Jay.
The NBC event did not unveil the actual complete schedule, just making a few announcements about new programming, so there are still a few question marks about some of its bubble shows but struggling “Southland,” “Heroes,” and “Parks and Recreation” did get the reprieve for the fall.

In addition to cancelling Life earlier today (not that I'm bitter), NBC revealed the six new series it has picked up for the 2009-2010 season.
First, the bad news: I've read through the descriptions and casting sides for all of the shows except Trauma, and despite the fact that they are all ensembles with more characters than you can keep track of, all the leads are straight, as far as I can tell (with the possibility that Guillermo Diaz's character on Mercy). If anyone in the industry knows otherwise, please send me a tip!
The only one of the series created by a woman is Mercy (the one about female nurses, naturally).
So basically, it's business as usual on primetime broadcast TV.
The good news? We'll be getting Maura Tierney (Parenthood), Carly Pope (Day One), and Michelle Trachtenberg (Mercy) on the regular, and some racial diversity among the casts (not a lot,

NBC has been struggling of late to find its identity as an entertainment programming network. With so many of television's best shows now appearing on cable channels (some of which are admittedly owned by parent NBC/Universal), the major networks have faced an increasing challenge to develop intriguing dramatic television, also facing as they do increased competition from video games, Internet downloads and other forms of entertainment.
But it's been hardest on NBC, which went through a serious staffing shakeup last December, searching for new blood and fresh ideas.
Has it worked? It's still too early to tell. Perhaps the most intriguing new offering from NBC is Day One, a futuristic drama from Heroes writer-producer Jesse Alexander. The story chronicles the aftermath of a global event that devastates the world's infrastructures when a small band of survivors strive to rebuild society and unravel the mysteries of why the event took

This Week on DVD: The Spirit, The Reader, House of Saddam

If you thought the last few weeks were slow for new DVD releases, well, think again. There are only two major releases this week, one of which is the Frank Miller bomb The Spirit, and the other being the Oscar-nominated film The Reader (you know, the one that no one saw because they thought it looked boring). To make matters worse, the Blu-ray release of The Reader won't be out for another two weeks. Other discs hitting stores today include the low budget horror film Splinter, the HBO mini-series House of Saddam, and a series of 8 "lost" cult classics from Lionsgate. Yikes. Are there any other noteworthy releases that we missed this week?

Wow, what a horrible week for DVD and Blu-ray releases. Sure, some people will be interested in picking up The Reader after it was nominated for Best Picture, beating out poor ol' Dark Knight. I had it at #10 on my Best of 2008 list and I would love to own a Blu-ray version for reasons I will soon tell you, but I think that is a film I will remain in the minority and I would never recommend anyone pick it up on a blind buy. So what does that leave you with? The Spirit? I know a few people will probably be interested in the Blu-ray edition of Pride and Prejudice and the other half might think about buying 8 Mile on Blu-ray, but all-in-all there is really nothing to suggest here.
So, while you can still read my mini-capsules

Doubt
I have this Blu-ray sitting right here and plan on popping it in as soon as I get done with this column and will hopefully have a review up in the next day or so. Doubt is a solid film with fantastic performances and with cinematography from Roger Deakins I am sure it will look gorgeous in high-def (even though Deakins didn't exactly bring his A-game to this one). The features, however, do look a bit on the weak side with four traditional featurettes and a commentary from writer/director John Patrick Shanley, but Shanley's comments may prove to be solid enough for a recommendation. However, all likelihood is this one is best left as a rental as I don't consider it a buy based on my one theatrical experience.

Michelle Trachtenberg is at our "Mercy"

The big-eyed, chestnut-haired cutie that is Michelle Trachtenberg has landed herself a starring role on the NBC pilot Mercy. The medical dram-com centers around a group of young nurses who, I’m sure, stand by each other through times of trouble, romance and hilarity.
With ER leaving the NBC building, Mercy might be the defibrillator the network will need to crush Grey’s Anatomy. There can never be too many hospital shows — nothing says fun like changing a bedpan and obligatory doctor-nurse sex: “We shouldn’t be doing this.” “Oh yes, we should!”
Of the three lead nurses, Michelle’s character will be playing the inexperienced “tragically unhip” role. It’s been a long time since I’ve been able to think of Trachtenberg as anything remotely “unhip” — even the stint she had on House as a heart-transplant patient who basically lives in a bubble, had a boyfriend and got
