The paradox of popular culture is that it never loses the capacity to make the corniest of karaoke cliches achingly transcendent
For the first four months of the school, we were serenaded in our house about a dozen times every day with the 1978 disco standard "I Will Survive". This has been courtesy of our ten year-old, who may not have the life experience for an anthem of defiant independence, but definitely has the pipes.
She's not a Gloria Gaynor type, exactly – more like a midget Ethel Merman. A real belter, this kid. When she finally got to perform what she'd been rehearsing, at her grade-school variety show, 400 grownups reacted in the first half-dozen bars as if they'd been Tasered.
Then they started clapping in time with the beat. Wives gave husbands dirty looks. Third graders were doing that sassy-black-girl thing with their necks.

“Hold on to Sixteen” was a lovely episode of Glee that eased back on the drama to provide a plot-driven episode not bogged down by some sort of overarching theme. The episode was just about the kids of McKinley High enjoying their days as high school students and the friends they’ve made along the way. Each and every member of New Directions and TrebleTones got their chance to sing solo in Sectionals, and the competition between the two clubs was healthy without getting in the way of friendships.
Read on to see who won Sectionals on this week’s Glee:
Quinn knows about Puck and Shelby and intends to spread the rumor to have Shelby fired and take baby Beth for herself. Rachel talks some sense into her, telling her that spreading that rumor would put her at rock bottom. Remember Sam? Turns out he moved to Kentucky to be "White Chocolate,...

Glee 3.08 "Hold On To Sixteen" Recap - Trout Fishing
Glee continues on toward its holiday mid-season finale with “Hold on to Sixteen" which sees Finn working to re-recruit Sam Evans (Chord Overstreet) to the New Directions, while Quinn faces a difficult decision on what to do with sensitive information, and Tina encourages Mike to pursue his dreams.
Don’t have the time to spare? Then here's what you missed on Glee’s “Hold on to Sixteen!”
Meeting up in the halls, Quinn reveals to Rachel that Ms. Shelby Corcoran (Idina Menzel) has been having student-teacher relations with Puck, for which she plans to report to the school. Rachel chimes in that technically speaking, their actions aren’t against the law, and jeopardizing Ms. Corcoran’s career would only be huting Quinn’s biological daughter Beth, truly hitting rock bottom.
With Sectionals only a short time away and taking place in McKinley high’s own auditorium,...

Before I begin, let me thank Heather Hogan for stepping in last week when my power went out. I believe in retrospect it was the gods showing mercy to me by not making me recap what I now firmly believe to be the worst-structured, most badly-written, pointless, plotless episode in the history of Glee, with the sole exception of Santana's amazing scene in which she comes out to, and is rejected by, her abuela.
It didn't help my evaluation of the episode when its author, Matthew Hodgson, took to Twitter last night to opine that those of us who want to see Brittany and Santana kiss should realize that they've already kissed last season in "Duets." He was joined by fellow newbie writer Michael Hitchcock, who decided to tell a fan she "must not have watched the show" if she didn't think they'd kissed.
I'm not sure how they define...

You'd think "Hold on to Sixteen," being the heralded return of Season 2 "Glee" fave Chord Overstreet, would focus on Sam's return to the "Glee" club.
But aside from the funny-but-also-weird-when-you-think-about-the-fact-that-he's-underage bit in the beginning about Sam stripping for money (and the subsequent country-fied "Red Solo Cup"), there was actually very little Sam in the episode.
The episode was more about togetherness and sharing and acceptance and all those warm, fuzzy things, with a good chunk of storyline dedicated to Mike Chang's ongoing daddy issues. While we frankly don't care a whole lot about Mike's home life (we do care a little!), we do appreciate that this gave us opportunities for like three Tina scenes. Girlfriend consistently gets the shaft on screen time and solos, so we were ecstatic that this episode featured so much of her.
Of course, it would've been better if she had a storyline of her own,...

Glee Photos & Promo: The Glee Club Celebrates Christmas in Episode 3.09
Sectionals came to Glee again in this week's episode. The glee club and the Troubletones faced off at the competition. But before they took the stage, there were quite a few developments. First, Quinn spilled the beans to Rachel that Shelby had slept with Puck and she wanted to use that information to get Shelby fired and get her daughter back. Rachel cautioned her against revealing that information, saying it was the wrong thing to do (especially taking Beth from her adoptive mother). Quinn decided to do the right thing and not ruin Shelby's career.
The glee club was worried about their chances of winning Sectionals and Finn realized they were in trouble. So he and Rachel headed out to bring back Sam. They found him working in a strip club, but his parents sent him back to McKinley with their blessing.

Audience members booed new X Factor judge Gary Barlow at recent auditions it has been claimed.
The Take That singer asked a female contestant at the venue, if she was a man at Birmingham’s LG Arena, where he was judging with panel members Louis Walsh, Kelly Rowland and Tulisa Contostavlos.
The unnamed contestant – who had given “confusing” stories about her background – said: “What? Of course I’m not.”
Gary, 40, then tried to cover his gaffe, asking if she was “born a man”.
One spectator told The Sun newspaper: “You could hear everyone gasp in shock.
“The woman was very pretty, but in fairness to Gary there was something a little bit suspect about her.
“She was extremely tall and thin and didn’t stand like a girl.
“But it was a fairly full-on thing for Gary to come out with as she took it pretty badly.
“Gary was booed.

Glen takes a look at Danny Elfman’s finest scores, outside of his collaborations with Tim Burton…
Having covered all of Elfman’s collaborations with Tim Burton for this column towards the end of last year, a follow up has been planned ever since. And with his score accompanying The Next Three Days, recently released on DVD and Blu-ray, I thought now would be an ideal time to look at some of his finest non-Burton moments.
Forbidden Zone
This movie is best described as batshit mental, but it’s certainly an interesting watch. Elfman and the other members of Oingo Boingo were heavily involved in the making of the film, with Richard Elfman directing and Danny himself playing Satan. Elfman composed the score to be performed by his band at the time, and they work through a selection of material that shows little regard for genre convention.

The MTV Newsroom is not traditionally a place for religious fanaticism. But with Harold Camping and his followers making everyone (on the Internets, at least) think the world is ending on Saturday, we thought we'd hedge our bets. Here's how some MTV Newsers are spending their last hours on Earth:

I'll actually be on a plane to an undisclosed tropical island on May 21, so if the world comes crumbling down, I will be listening to the new Fleet Foxes album (while picturing myself frolicking through a forest, of course. Oh, forests and old-fashioned harmonizing, I'll miss you), catching up on 'Friday Night Lights,' reading the latest Charlaine Harris novel (crap, will the world end before Sookie and Eric live happily ever after?...

Just a quick review this week.
"I Will Survive" felt like a filler episode which is not a great thing so close to the finale.
However, it was nice to take a break from Calzona last night and have more focus on some other characters, particularly Cristina as well as the other residents and their battle to become Chief Resident. Avery lost the race after he backed out of the Chief's trial. I want to like Avery, I really do, but we never seem to get the opportunity to watch him develop much. Some episodes he shines, like last week, and some episodes he fades into the background and almost seems irrelevant.
Cristina went behind Teddy's back to steal a patient and perform a unique surgery even though April warned her not too as it wasn't following protocol. It's nice to see April shine through and see her relationships develop,...

Don’t you love Thursday nights?!
I’m biting my bottom lip now trying to simply review last night’s absolutely incredible episode, "I Will Survive," and desperately trying not to comment just yet on the previews for next week’s Grey's Anatomy season finale.
Honestly, I can't wait to see the repercussions from yet another strong installment. Now, let’s talk about the perfectly delivered, emotionally-packed performance by our favorite doctors.
First off, I really liked the fact that Calzona was not the main focus this week. Without them in the limelight, we were able to see the competition for chief resident at its best.
Not surprisingly, Alex told on Meredith about her messing with the Alzheimer’s trial. I just knew he would though. I doubt that Meredith will lose her job or McDreamy, but she will certainly be facing severe consequences. Rightfully so, though.
Then again, let...

Whoa! Grey's Anatomy has done it again. Just like last year the penultimate episode was chock full of incredible developments, setting the stage for an epic season finale. Let's review where things stand before pondering the promo for next week.
Ambition and Ambiguity
Ga creator Shonda Rhimes has said that the season finale will focus on Meredith, Cristina, and Alex. Tonight's installment, "I Will Survive", got things rolling as the lines between personal relationships and professional aspirations began to blur.

Grey's Anatomy airs its second-to-last episode of the season Thursday, and it looks as if many story arcs are coming to a head in "I Will Survive." Chief among them?
The Chief Resident competition. With Owen about to conduct interviews, Cristina wants to make sure his mind stays impartial and sharp. That means sexual blackmail.
Meanwhile, with everything up in the air regarding the adoption of Zola and beyond, Meredith starts to wonder just how Derek can be so certain that it will all work out.
Follow this link for a photo gallery from "I Will Survive," then watch the two clips below and tell us what you think we can expect in the season's penultimate episode ...

There's a lot else going on this week, though, and we've posted a full photo gallery for "I Will Survive" below. For one, the Chief Resident battle is finally nearing its end.
Meanwhile, Alex and Lucy's relationship reaches a crossroads, while all the personal and professional pressure Meredith has been under really starts to wear on her.

Personal and work pressures are adding up in Seattle.
Even with "White Wedding" ending on such a joyous note, next week's Grey's Anatomy finds Meredith visibly on edge for a number of reasons. She's not the only one.
While Owen conducts a formal set of interviews for the Chief Resident position, Cristina grows increasingly defiant, and Alex and Lucy's undefined relationship is put to the test.
Finally, Jackson suddenly backs out of the Webber's diabetes trial. What do you predict will happen on each of these fronts in the second to last episode of the season?

Sorry folks, but this review begins with one of those “I was there when...” anecdotes.
Oddly enough though, it's probably the most terrified I've been when watching Doctor Who, even more than when I was three years old and running out of the room screaming at the title music. No – this time, I was fearful of the much-touted revamp being a complete dog's dinner.
So there I was with my wife Ally, along with our friends Jacqui and Richard. It was, I think, the Saturday of the Easter weekend. We'd heard all about the big, exciting launch of Doctor Who, now bang-up-to-date for a 21st century take on a show that had once been scorned at for being cheap old hat. My expectations were not particularly high, to say the least.
And out of all of us, I was the only Who fan in the building – Ally, Jacqui and Richard...

Roger Ebert has a very particular method of reviewing films: using a four-star rating system, he judges movies on how they merit given the context of their particular genre. For example, within his system, American Pie is given the same rating as The Lord of the Rings: Fellowship of the Ring, as they both succeed within their genres equally.
It occurs to me that many people will see Priscilla: Queen of the Desert and decide that it's too shallow, too showy, and has far too much confetti for them to enjoy it. But to view the show this way is to miss the ride, no pun intended, and perhaps some attention should be paid to Ebert's method of critiquing a work. Priscilla exists simultaneously as an exuberant musical as well as a send-up of the structure, much in the way real drag queens both idolize and mock the female...

In pilot news, hunky Disney star David Henrie landed the lead in Assistants. Here’s hoping that his on-screen diva boss Heather Locklear keeps him shirtless most episodes. Anything else would be a crime.
Out producer/director Bryan Singer says the mutant he wanted most for X-Men: First Class was Quicksilver, but that was obviously not possible given Quicksilver is Magneto's son and Magneto is depicted as a young man in the film. At least he didn’t rewrite history to make it work, since I know more than one Hollywood power player that would have.
Dave Grohl went off on a explicative-ridden rant about Glee, Ryan Murphy, and artists having the right to turn down the popular show (even if it doesn’t really make sense). And he’s completely right, artists do have the right to say no. But I’d love to know how it came up,...

Previously a Grammy nominee for album of the year, he is joined by rap artist Eminem after losing the title to Arcade Fire for their album 'the Suburbs'. HollywoodNews.com: It feels like Christmas morning today with the release of Lady Gaga’s latest single “Born This Way,” the first track to premiere off her upcoming record and the freshest musical material from the pop singer-songwriter since 2010’s The Fame Monster Ep.
The track debuted at 6 a.m. Est.
Elton John, who could only be considered a precursor to Gaga, famously stated in a recent interview with Rolling Stone that born this way was “an anthem” and proclaimed it, “the new ‘I Will Survive.’” It would take a lot, however, to surpass Gloria Gaynor’s soulful disco hit that became the theme song for both female empowerment and the gay community in the late ’70s. “Born This Way” isn’t as elegant or emotionally-charged as Gaynor’s track, but it will certainly be a standout at dance clubs across America.

HollywoodNews.com: In a recent interview with Rolling Stone, Elton John opened up about good friend, newfound collaborator and fellow glam fashionista Lady Gaga.
During the interview, which is partly published on the Rolling Stone website and can be found in the magazine’s latest issue, John praised the reigning Queen of Pop’s upcoming album, Born This Way, going so far as to proclaim the title track “the anthem that’s going to obliterate ‘I Will Survive.’”
“I’ve heard her new album. It’s amazing. …I can’t think of how huge it’s going to be,” John said.
Considering the huge impact John’s music has had throughout his prolific career, audiophiles will have to take his word for it until Lady Gaga’s “Born This Way” single drops Feb. 13, the day of the Grammy Awards.

The Country Strong soundtrack. Hold up, has 2011 been designated as some kind of Groundhog Annum? Almost precisely twelve months ago, emerging from the boozy mists of New Year, came the soundtrack to a movie set in the wacky world of country music and featuring one of the stars of Iron Man, with said star daringly tackling vocal duties on some of the soundtrack songs. And now, with January having rolled round once again, what do we find? Only the soundtrack to a movie set in the wacky world of country music and featuring one of the stars of Iron Man, with said star daringly tackling vocal duties on some of the soundtrack songs.
Of course, last time it was an Oscar-winning Jeff Bridges in Crazy Heart, whereas this time we’re getting Gwyneth Paltrow in Country Strong, and while Gp won’t be replicating the Dude’s achievement and snaring...

I love this time of year when the pop culture slate is clean and we don't know what the year will bring. Yes, 2011 stretches before us a glittering, unblemished frontier of gay pop culture to be filled with moments like Glee's version of "Teenage Dream" or Neil Patrick Harris and David Burtka becoming daddies.
Well, unblemished except for Ramin Setoodeh who couldn't even wait one week before shooting off his fool mouth again.
Ignoring Ramin, to help launch us into 2011 like a flock of graceful swans in flight, here are eleven of the year's pop culture items most making us wriggle with anticipation!
1) Shameless — debuts January 9th

“Most Bizarre” seems like the reality TV equivalent of “Best.” You gotta consider your genre!
It’s been a ridiculous year in “reality.” Bristol Palin outlasted fallen pop star Brandy in a televised ballroom dancing popularity contest. Ellen DeGeneres was suddenly sitting on Simon Cowell’s lap and then –poof!– both of them were gone. The Hills may have been fake molehills all along. The movie Burlesque is a watered-down, weedy attempt to make stripping acceptable to women
In the film, Burlesque, Christina Aguilera plays a small-town girl with a dream. "I just wanna sing wearing slutty knickers!" Actually she doesn't say this, but she may as well have done.
The makers of Burlesque may have been trying for the ambience of Cabaret or Moulin Rouge, but the result is a daytime soap opera with a few crummy basques thrown in. Christina frugging like she's had too much Fanta at the school disco. Cher smouldering like a half-melted candle. More basques, pants, boas, leatherette, doffed sparkly bowler hats, and tapped canes. A queasy mix of Showgirls meets Seaside Special.
Shocking. But not in the way you'd think. Burlesque isn't a convention-defying movie about freedom, destiny, art; it is a boring movie about how nice your pants are.
The theme of "Cor, underwear!" was so...

New York — Cake are the kind of band it's easy to think you know well — songs like "Short Skirt/Long Jacket" and their "I Will Survive" cover still pop up regularly in ads and soundtracks — and easy to love for their blend of regular-guy sound with clever lyrics and off-beat instrumentation. Still, when the cult faves hit Irving Plaza on Tuesday night, frontman John McCrea made sure everyone felt like they belonged.

The premiere of Conan on TBS went about as expected; fired-up crowd for the intro, a monologue of NBC jokes and self-deprecating “canceled” and TBS jokes, and relatively standard interviews with Seth Rogen and Glee’s Lea Michele. It was certainly no radical departure from what we’re used to seeing out of Conan, nor should it have been, and as peoples’ obligatory detailed online reviews of the first show subside over the next week, the show appears destined to join The Daily Show and Colbert as a reliable, throw-it-on-whenever nightly standby. The biggest highlight of the first show, however, came from the musical segment, when Jack White joined Conan (who seemed refreshingly loose and comfortable throughout the first show, not surprisingly) and Jimmy Vivino’s “Basic Cable Band” for a performance of “20 Flight Rock” — when I initially saw Conan strap on a guitar, I assumed some sort of “I Will Survive...

Gay jokes are still so common in American movie comedies that most of them barely register. That’s why, whenever anyone points out how common they are and says, "Hey, maybe this is contributing to a culture of prejudice," there tends to be a immediate and furious counter-response of: “Political correctness!” “It’s just a joke!” “I don’t see what the big deal is!”
People don’t see what the big deal is, because they’re not seeing the big picture, which is that this isn’t about any one joke. It’s about the fact that these jokes are so common – in a way that jokes about other minorities such as African Americans or Jewish people or Asians or women or the disabled, simply no longer are.
And yet no longer making jokes about "stingy Jews" (except ironically) or casually using the n-word as an insult didn't stop comedians from telling jokes,...

The 14 finalists have had to wait 24 hours to find out who would be the next two acts to leave the competition in tonight’s double elimination. Betty Anne Waters is a woman who is just as extraordinary as her story. When her brother Kenny was accused of murder in 1983, despite shaky evidence and testimony, the mother of two decided to fight. In order to exonerate her brother, she set her sights on law school, and beyond. The new film Conviction tells her story, with Hilary Swank bringing her to life.
While the film seems true to her story, I had the rare opportunity of hearing the tale from the source – Mrs. Waters herself. In an intimate roundtable interview I discussed with Mrs. Waters the differences between the film and the reality, what it was really like to be in her shoes, and more. Conviction opens in a limited release this Friday.

Sir Elton John is a self-confessed ‘Glee’ Lover and the British singer watches the American musical show every day. The 63-year-old singer recently confirmed that he is going to collaborate with Mathew Morrison for his (Mathew’s) upcoming solo debut album. Mathew Morrison plays the role of the Glee Club director Will Schuestar.
Elton John confirmed that he had a brief meeting with Mathew a few days back and he might start working on the project when he comes down to La. During the Interview Sir Elton said that he will be glad to make an appearance on ‘Glee’. The singer believes that it is a great honor to see his songs being remade by younger artists.
The singer also indicated towards a likely pop-collaboration with the famous and (might we add ultra-glamorous) Lady Gaga. The singer said that he might co-create a track with Gaga for her upcoming album.

Elton John said that "Born This Way," the title track from Lady Gaga’s next album, is a new gay anthem bound to surpass even Gloria Gaynor’s "I Will Survive."Entertainment Weekly spoke with John, who described the forthcoming Gaga album as “f—ing amazing.” Despite speculation he may appear on the album, John said that seems unlikely because the album is more or less finished. "‘Born This Way,’ which is the title song, will completely get rid of Gloria Gaynor’s ‘I Will Survive,’" he said. "This is the new ‘I Will Survive.’ That was the gay anthem. This is the new gay anthem. Actually, it’s not a gay anthem — it can apply to anybody.”Producer RedOne has described Born This Way as Gaga’s “freedom” album.
