I include myself among those who was impressed by his dark, direct blow to the role of religion and the church in The King (a show of hands for those who feel the same). Now Marsh is going after the top dogs of the Catholic Church with The Vatican Tapes. Reading some of the Telluride coverage, I was under the impression that James Marsh' re-introduction to fiction (Red Riding: 1980) form didn't go as well as the tons of accolades he received for perhaps the most well-liked doc film in the past decade

Best Films Of The Decade (aka The Naughties) From Alex & Terry
List # 1
By Alex Simon
When Terry and I initially discussed writing these lists, I had a tough time thinking back on 20 films over the past decade which I was really taken with, thinking that movies have sunk so low over the past ten years, that even choosing a dozen would be a short-order job. Thirty minutes into it, my list had nearly 60 titles! After much cutting, pasting, and re-cutting and pasting, here are my top 20 films (in no particular order) of the first decade of the 21st century, dubbed by many as “the naughties.” --A.S.
1.No Country for Old Men (Coen Brothers, 2007) An elegiac blend of stark beauty and full-throttle despair from two of our finest filmmakers, set in the contemporary American West. Every frame is damn near flawless, and would have been an even more perfect vehicle for the late Sam Peckinpah.

James Marsh To Direct The Vatican Tapes

James Marsh, the Oscar winning director of Man On Wire, is set to tackle the supernatural in his next film, a thriller entitled The Vatican Tapes. The story surrounds a series of events that follow after the release of a leaked tape from the Vatican, showing an exorcism going horribly wrong.
Marsh, who proved his abilities as a narrative storyteller with his heist styled Man On Wire doc, has decided to make the leap into feature films. The Vatican Tapes follows on the heels of Marsh's newest feature, Red Riding: 1980, the second installment in the highly praised British crime trilogy. It was only recently that Marsh first tasted the fictional feature world with a small indie pic called The King starring Gael García Bernal.
Christopher Borrelli, writer of the straight-to-dvd film The Marine 2 has signed on to pen the script.

After wrapping up on “Red Riding: 1980″, James Marsh, the Oscar-winning director of “Man on Wire”, will move straight to the supernatural thriller “The Vatican Tapes”. According to THR, the film centers on a series of events that unfold after a tape gets leaked from the Vatican displaying an exorcism that goes wrong. It sounds like a solid premise and even though I haven’t seen his 2005 film, “The King” starring Gael Garcia Bernal, I’m excited to find out how Marsh will handle non-documentary films.
But back to “The Vatican Tapes”, I have a question: has there ever been an exorcism gone right? Like the priests finish exorcising the demon, the little girl smiles, the priests high-five, and then everyone goes out for ice cream? Wouldn’t the Catholic Church film a successful exorcism, post it on YouTube, and then say, “Let’s see your Protestantism do that, fuckers!

‘Man on Wire’ Director Gets Supernatural with ‘Vatican Tapes’

Director James Marsh, who brought us last year's best documentary (in my opinion) Man on Wire, is taking the jump to genre filmmaking with the upcoming supernatural thriller The Vatican Tapes.
Lionsgate and Lakeshore Ent. are producing the flick, according to THR, which follows the story of a series of events that unfold after a tape gets leaked from the Vatican displaying an exorcism that goes wrong. It's the kind of story that will bring the Da Vinci Code protesters back out into the streets.
It will be interesting to see how this one turns out. The script is coming from Chris Borrelli, who is making his feature script debut. His major credit is serving as a miniatures videographer on Michael Bay's Armageddon. Marsh is a solid director though, with not only Man on Wire to his credit, but also the 2005 indie drama The King, starring Gael Garcia Bernal and William Hurt.

Man on Wire's James Marsh Will Unveil The Vatican Tapes

British director James Marsh made huge waves with his exhilarating documentary Man on Wire, which is apparently loved by nearly everyone. Now Marsh will jump back to feature films as THR reports he will be helming the supernatual thriller The Vatican Tapes which centers on a series of events that unfold after a tape gets leaked from the Vatican displaying an exorcism that goes wrong. At least they're laying this all out on the table as opposed to The Exorcism of Emily Rose which instead portrayed itself as an Exorcist style horror flick, when it was really just a courtroom drama with unfrightening flashbacks. That's right, I said it.
Chris Borrelli wrote the screenplay based on a story envisioned by himself and Chris Morgan, but no cast is attached yet. This isn't the first time Marsh has directed a non-documentary film, as he directed The King starring Gael Garcia Bernal

Before his 2008 doc Man on Wire, James Marsh also directed a little-seen feature starring Gael Garcia Bernal, The King. He's also been busy recently with Red Riding: 1980, the second film in the much-lauded British crime trilogy. Now he's taking another stab at feature films with the supernatural thriller, The Vatican Tapes. The film concerns the events that occur after a tape featuring an exorcism gone horribly wrong gets leaked from the Vatican. The script comes courtesy of Christopher Borrelli (The Marine 2).
I haven't yet seen The King, or Red Riding:1980, but it was evident from Man on Wire that Marsh was a helluva storyteller. I only wish that his next project was a heist film of some sort. The heist-esque narrative of Man on Wire was one of the most remarkable aspects of the film to me, and it would have been great to see him finally get

Coughlin and professional partner Alex Mazo earned 22 out of 30 points for their paso doble on Monday night. The two were at the bottom with pop singer Aaron Carter and partner Karina Smirnoff -- and the judges were surprised.

A custody battle may be brewing over the future of Michael Jackson's three children. Just four days after the singer's sudden death on June 25, Jackson's mother, Katherine, has filed a petition in Los Angeles Probate Court seeking legal guardianship of Jackson's three children.
"Joe and Katherine Jackson want those children!," a source close to the family tells People.
Jackson had two kids - Prince, 12 and Paris, 11 - with ex-wife Debbie Rowe. His youngest son, Prince Michael II, 7, was born to an unnamed surrogate. Although Rowe is still the legal parent of the two older children, her next step is unclear.

Actress Pell James
Pell James Takes A Hot Rod To The Dark Side In Surveillance
By
Alex Simon
Virginia native Pell James hit the ground running following graduation from Nyu’s drama school in 1999, mixing TV and stage work, then landing her first high-profile part in 2005’s The King, co-starring with Gael Garcia Bernal and William Hurt. Since then, James also made impressive turns in Jim Jarmusch’s Broken Flowers and David Fincher’s Zodiac, in one of the film’s most unsettling scenes, as one of the notorious Bay area killer’s victims.
Pell James shines in an entirely new light as Bobbi, a drug-addicted drifter who comes face-to-face with evil incarnate in Jennifer Lynch’s Surveillance, a smashingly original thriller hitting theaters June 26 from Magnet Releasing. She also appears in Shrink, a tableaux-like satire of life in L.A., starring Kevin Spacey, which arrives from Lions Gate on

Cinema Retro publishers Lee Pfeiffer and Dave Worrall attended the Bradford International Film Festival in Bradford, England last week. Here is Lee Pfeiffer's first report:
For many years, we had heard about the exciting events that take place at the annual Bradford International Film Festival. The festival is held at the National Media Museum, which is a state-of-the-art showcase for the history of British film, TV, photography and new media. Over the last fifteen years, the festival has hosted world premieres, classic film screenings and internationally acclaimed interview sessions with actors and filmmakers. Although the festival has proven to be a popular attraction, Bradford's distance from London (several hours north) has kept many movie fans from attending. As most of our dealings are generally in London, we fall into that category ourselves. However, we learned that passing up on this festival is a major faux pas on
behalf of any serious movie lover.
