Low key pledging
TheLittleSongbird25 January 2021
'Tiny Toon Adventures' proved frequently that it could do episodes structured as (mostly three) segments very well. The quality in most may not have been consistent, with for example one segment being especially great and another only average, but all the show's segment-structured episodes have a huge amount to recommend. "Pledge Week" didn't sound though all that inspiring or all that intriguing and had a real danger of being a quite bland episode.

"Pledge Week" is made up of three segments, a number not uncommon for 'Tiny Toon Adventures', and also a wraparound story concerning pledging donations. These segments are titled "It's All Relatives", "Lifeguard Lunacy" and "The Kite". For me "Pledge Week" is somewhat uneven as an episode. It has one great segment, one pleasant if unexceptional one and one that didn't do an awful lot for me. A lot of good things can be seen here, but at the same time it's unremarkable and other episodes have a lot more wit and wackiness (all things that 'Tiny Toon Adventures' did so well at its best and was generally the approach to its material.

In my view, the best segment was "It's All Relatives". Maybe there is some slight bias, as it is centered around Babs and Buster and they are two of the show's best, most interesting and funniest characters. Particularly Babs. Both are on top form and have great chemistry, the grandmother character is annoying but not in a way that over-grates.

Was somewhat mixed on "The Kite". Hamton is likeable enough though have always felt that he works better as a supporting character/co-lead than the lead. The segment is quite low on laughs, is rather too low key and could have been sharper in the pace, but it has a lot of charm and the friendship between Hamton and the kite is very sweet.

For me the segment that doesn't work is "Lifeguard Lunacy". That had all the makings of a classic Looney Tunes-like scenario, but is undone by the blandness and predictability of the material, the lack of energy and Elmyra being annoying. Other than the animation, music and voice acting (all great as usual), the best thing about a segment that is not near "looney" enough is Calamity, who is amusing.

Am now going to mention what all three segments of "Pledge Week" have in common. The animation is rich in detail and vibrant, while the music is characterful and full of infectious energy and dynamic orchestration. The theme song is one of early 90s animation's catchiest. The writing has sharpness and wit in "It's All Relatives" and the wraparound (amusing enough if not wow-worthy), while the storytelling does have some energy and charm. Though it tended to be too low key. The voice acting is on point.

Summing up, decent if unexceptional. 6/10
