The 10 Must-See Sequels of 2010

25 December 2009 11:02 PM, PST | Aceshowbiz | See recent Aceshowbiz news »

Hollywood can't be set asunder from sequels. The facts that popular characters are more appealing to moviegoers and there is less risk involved in presenting a follow-up rather than releasing new film have attracted more and more filmmakers to bring out one sequel after another whenever a movie performs well with the audience.

Such is happening in 2010. The year will see many of best movies from previous years springing out with sequels in competition to dominate the box office. From the hilarious "Meet the Fockers" to the action-packed "Iron Man", they all get the chance to present more stories and adventures in the life of people's beloved characters.

With many sequels being offered, AceShowbiz compiles the 10 not-to-be-missed ones in the upcoming 2010. Each sequel listed weighs on how the original films performed after they were released in theaters as well as what the sequels themselves have to offer this time around. »

It's 'Red. vs. 'Saw'

17 December 2009 9:45 PM, PST | CinemaSpy | See recent CinemaSpy news »

Bruce Willis will be taking on Jigsaw next October.

No, it won’t be in the same movie. But Variety is reporting that Summit Entertainment has settled on October 22 as the release date for Red, its espionage thriller based on the DC/WildStorm comic by Warren Ellis and Cully Hamner.

Saw VII, the latest in Lionsgate’s torture-porn series, is scheduled for release on the same day. The 'Saw' franchise has become a regular staple of late Octobers, but Red might draw a wider audiences; along with Willis, the film stars Morgan Freeman, Helen Mirren, and Mary Louise-Parker.

The film revolves around a former black-ops CIA agent who has quietly retired, until the day a high-tech assassin shows up to kill him. With his loved ones in danger, the old school spy must reassemble his old team, and figure out who is coming after him. Red is directed by Robert Schwentke. »

17 December 2009 2:37 AM, PST | Fangoria | See recent Fangoria news »

A poster for Hatchet director Adam Green's Frozen has been making the rounds, and now Fango has a look at the unmarked image. The filmmakers sent over the artwork last night fresh off of their debut at the recent Butt-Numb-a-Thon in Austin. For those just getting in on the action, Cody Blue Snider posted three exclusive blogs from the set of the film (read 'em here: One, Two, Three) and you can get some of Kane Hodder's thoughts on the film right here.

See the poster and details below. Frozen opens February 5, 2010 from Anchor Bay.

A typical day on the slopes turns into a chilling nightmare for three snowboarders when they get stranded on the chairlift before their last run. As the ski patrol switches off the night lights, they realize with growing panic that they’ve been left behind dangling high off the ground with no way down. »

Lionsgate Makes Date for Saw VII 3D

10 December 2009 | shocktillyoudrop.com | See recent shocktillyoudrop news »

Jigsaw and his legacy will continue on in 3D when Lionsgate releases Saw VII on October 22, 2010, keeping in line with the "if it's Halloween, it must be Saw " campaign. Marcus Dunstan and Patrick Melton return to write with David Hackl back in the director's chair. I think it's safe to presume Tobin Bell and Costas Mandylor will return to reprise their roles as Jigsaw and Hoffman, respectively. Story of Gears of War Movie Not Following Games?

8 December 2009 9:22 PM, PST | ScreenRant.com | See recent Screen Rant news »

We’ve not heard too much about the anticipated live-action adaptation of the Gears of War video game franchise, but way back in February Screen Rant reported that Len Wiseman (Underworld, Live Free or Die Hard) would be directing the Gears of War feature film and co-writing the screenplay alongside Chris Morgan (Wanted, Fast & Furious).

Unfortunately, Wiseman also said he knows little about video games himself – A red flag considering all video game movies tend to fall short in quality because movie studios cannot/do not replicate and/or recognize the important parts of a video game, its story and the experience it generates.

Much more recently, in October we found out that Billy Ray, who wrote State of Play and Breach, is writing the Gears of War script for New Line and that was the last we heard… until now.

DVD Art and Stills: The Riverman

7 December 2009 2:31 PM, PST | DreadCentral.com | See recent Dread Central news »

Sometimes to fight evil, you must enlist evil. That's exactly what happened many years ago when serial killer Ted Bundy was enlisted to help capture the Green River Killer, and with the January 12th DVD release of The Riverman that tale is finally being told.

Based on real-life events recounted in the best-selling book The Riverman: Ted Bundy and I Hunt for the Green River Killer (co-written by Robert Keppel, former chief criminal investigator for the attorney general of Washington state), The Riverman recounts Keppel’s efforts to track down mass murderer Gary Ridgeway, aka the Green River Killer.

With ten unsolved murders weighing on his mind, Keppel (Bruce Greenwood, Star Trek, National Treasure: Book of Secrets, Déjà Vu) recruits imprisoned serial killer Ted Bundy (Cary Elwes, The Princess Bride, Saw, The Alphabet Killer, and A Christmas Carol) to help find the killer-at-large.

Saw VI Blu-ray Details and Cover Art

7 December 2009 10:03 AM, PST | TheHDRoom | See recent TheHDRoom news »

Saw VI with Tobin Bell was the weakest box office performer in the series thus far despite managing decent reviews from critics which should make it a sought out commodity on home video.

We can now confirm that Lionsgate has pegged January 26 as the release date for Saw VI on Blu-ray Disc and DVD. For a first time in the series, the original Saw film will be packaged in with the Blu-ray and both DVD versions to help introduce newcomers to where it all began -- and of course spur sales of the "middle" films.

Lionsgate is bringing the unrated director's cut of Saw VI to Blu-ray like its predecessors in 1.78.1 1080p video and 7.1 DTS-hd Master Audio. Full bonus features play out as follows:

Hatchet 2 is a Go! Adam Green Returns!

24 November 2009 11:53 AM, PST | DreadCentral.com | See recent Dread Central news »

The news plenty of horror fans have been looking forward to finally broke this morning ... Adam Green will be returning to the ground that put him on the map to write and direct Hatchet 2. Of course, we dug a little deeper and got you guys some more info beyond the surface stuff.

"It was never a matter of money, just timing," Green tells us. "We wanted to make sure that everyone involved with the first film could come back before any of us committed. By the time the first one came out, we were all just exhausted. It took two years. Being that the film was successful, everybody wanted us to do a sequel immediately, but again -- we were all Hatcheted out! We didn't want to make a Hatchet movie just to make a Hatchet movie. Paul W.S. Anderson Eyes Castlevania (Again)

21 November 2009 7:32 AM, PST | ScreenRant.com | See recent Screen Rant news »

Castlevania is a movie I do not hold high expectations for. Besides the fact that it is a video game adaptation, it seems to be going through development issues with a continuous set of director changes.

In January, Screen Rant reported that James Wan (Saw franchise) would be co-writing and directing and adaptation of the popular video game franchise, taking over from Paul W.S. Anderson (Death Race) as the writer/director and then Sylvain White (The Losers) who took the helm after Anderson.

After the studio decision to go with Wan, we’ve now come full circle and Paul W.S. Anderson is again set to direct. We don’t know yet how long this may last as in the summer, they were still promoting Wan and the plans for the film at San Diego Comic-Con.

Icons Friend Tim Sullivan to Replace Gunn on Scream Queens 2

19 November 2009 2:39 PM, PST | iconsoffright.com | See recent Icons of Fright news »

Great news for Icons of Fright friend Tim Sullivan!  According to VH1, the director of 2001 Maniacs and Icons contributor with his Shock And Roll series, is set to replace James Gunn in the channel's Scream Queens 2 reality show.  Gunn directed scenes on-camera for the show, which acts as a contest for potential screamers, with the ultimate prize being a role in the next Saw film.  Season One's winner Tanedra Howard appeared in Saw VI (perhaps she would've been happier with a role in Paranormal Activity).

Read VH1's official press release below:

Scream Queens 2 will take a new cadre of 10 aspiring actresses and give them the chance to win a breakthrough role in Saw 3D, the next film in Lionsgate’s Saw horror franchise. The reality competition series is produced by Lionsgate and Joke Productions, Inc. and is slated to premiere in 2010.

With James Gunn moving on to other things, the question beckoned: Who would be at the helm of this season's "Scream Queens" for VH1? It didn't take long for the answer to come.

From the Press Release

The reality competition series is produced by Lionsgate and Joke Productions, Inc., and is slated to premiere in 2010.

Season One winner Tanedra Howard was featured in the coveted and iconic “opening trap” scene in “Saw VI,” playing the character “Simone.” Due to her breakout performance and significant storyline, she is also expected to appear in future Lionsgate productions, a major coup for the previously undiscovered actress.
