British comics have not been well served in their Hollywood adaptations. Transatlantic transitions from page to screen result in either being too faithful, as Zack Synder’s Watchmen arguably was, or too loose with the essence of the source material, resulting in a genre bound snooze fest – Judge Dredd please stand up (and don’t remove your helmet!).
While the golden age of American comics have lit up the screen in this last decade, with visionary directors taking the basic elements of these iconic characters to their own conclusions, British comics have not garnered such attention. Nolan’s Batman, Raimi’s Spiderman and the Supermen of Donner and Singer have their own unique identity; the depth of the mythology of these superheroes allows numerous interpretations, and some of the most interesting re-imaginings of our own myths and legends have occurred on the screen as well as on the page.

It isn’t necessarily great news for an actor to hear that the television series they’ve been starring in is going to be “retooled” in its second season. Your character can be retooled right out the door. Or, it can develop significantly. The latter has fortunately been the case for actor Ross McCall, who has been playing Kenny Battalgia on “Crash” for both of its two seasons. Earlier in the year, veteran producer and writer Ira Steven Behr (“Deep Space Nine”) was brought on as the new show runner, and he merged Kenny’s storyline with that of billionaire Seth Blanchard, the billionaire played by Eric Roberts in the new season, and the major plot focus. Who qualifies as overrated? Guys who seem to be getting lots of buzz, but has no real talent at all, or perhaps just a small amount of it. I have no issue if an actor gets the cover of GQ or Details or L'Uomo Vogue every month. They can even strut their stuff on the catwalks of Milan and Paris and gain additional media mileage. But to be considered the hottest actor on the planet with nothing to show yet? That is something totally absurd.

One afternoon in Cape Town I sat in my little room at University House and took inventory. This must have been in June, winter in the southern hemisphere, and it had been raining steadily for most of a week. He’s a man who has many names: Doogie Howser… Nph… NPattz (patent pending). Neil Patrick Harris saw his career take a Tarantino-esque turn after a co-starring role in “Harold & Kumar Go To White Castle.” The boy who was Doogie Howser had suddenly become a man, and a really freaking crazy man at that. The newfound fame is likely what led to his starring role on the hit TV series “How I Met Your Mother.” By the time the “Harold & Kumar” sequel came up, there wasn’t really a question about seeing Harris return; he is integral to the series now.
Now The Hollywood Reporter brings word that Nph has nailed down his next two projects: a starring role in “The Best and the Brightest” and a support spot in “Beastly.” This news come hot on the heels of Harris’s appearance as the host of last night’s Tony Awards ceremony. »

The Football Factory, Green Street, Rise of the Footsoldier, every few years we get a new film exploring hooliganism in the beautiful game but few so stylish as today’s new release, Awaydays. Based on the bestselling novel by Andrew Sampson, this low-budget Brit drama follows one young lad’s initiation into a football gang characterised not by their shaven heads and scary tattoos, but by their fashion finesse. And there are some that are predicting the movie will kick off a new trend in male dressing.
So, what look can we expect from Awaydays? According to the film’s website, the look of the football gang, called The Pack is defined by “a cultish, almost effeminate style,” with “androgynous wedge haircuts worn with Lacoste tennis shirts, Lois jeans and Adidas Forest Hills training shoes.” Known as the casual look, the style emerged in the Northwest in the post-punk period »

Thor, the mythological Norse god of thunder and one of the founding members of Marvel Comics' super-team, the Avengers, is expected to be one of the most complex -- and commercially risky -- comic-to-film adaptations in Marvel's planned lead-up to the Avengers feature film.
The intended release date for the film has already been pushed back, and there have been no shortage of cast rumors -- from Josh Hartnett or Natalie Portman portraying the evil trickster god Loki, to Alexander Skarsgård lifting the hammer in the Thor role -- but recently one more name has been added to the list: Charlie Hunnam of the FX series Sons of Anarchy. At the recent premiere of Mutant Chronicles, Hunnam was asked about the Thor rumor and he admitted that he had been called in for the role.
