CBS dominated another summertime Thursday with reruns of its crime dramas. The network, which aired two repeats of Without a Trace and an encore of CSI: Crime Scene Investigation, averaged 12.5 million viewers and a 3.5 rating/11 share among adults 18-49, according to preliminary Nielsen estimates. Primetime was dullsville on Thursday with reruns dominating the schedules of the Big Four networks. CBS easily won the night in total viewers (12.1 million) and in the adults 18-49 demographic (3.5 rating/11 share) even with a relatively sluggish performance for the 9 p.m. repeat of CSI: Crime Scene Investigation (13.8 million, 4.1/13), according to preliminary Nielsen Media Research estimates. CBS led the rest of the night as well with a special 8 p.m. repeat airing of CSI: Miami (11.7 million, 3.4/11) and the 10 p.m. rerun of Without a Trace (12.9 million, 3.7/12). NBC had little traction for the night with repeats of Friends, a fresh episode of midseason holdover Come to Papa, Will & Grace, Scrubs and ER, adding up to a nightly average of 5.3 million viewers and 2.3/7 in adults 18-49. ABC nosed ahead of the peacock in total viewers for the night (5.5 million), though not in adults 18-49 (1.9/6) with two hours of Extreme Makeover repeats capped by the 10 p.m. newsmagazine Primetime Thursday.

NBC's new comedy Come to Papa didn't exactly set the world afire in its Thursday debut. But being the only fresh scripted offering on the most-watched night on television helped the sitcom starring Tom Papa (6.9 million viewers, 2.9 rating/10 share among adults 18-49) hold onto 94% of its Friends 18-49 lead-in and lead its 8:30-9 p.m. time slot in viewers and 18-49. Still, a rerun of CBS' drama CSI: Crime Scene Investigation (14.5 million, 4.6/14) won the honors as the top-rated program of the night, according to preliminary Nielsen data. CSI and a repeat of Without a Trace (13.3 million, 4.0/12) propelled CBS (11.4 million, 3.4/11) to the top spot for the night in viewers and adults 18-49. NBC (6.8 million, 2.9/9) was second, followed by Fox's (4.9 million, 2.1/7), rebroadcast of the feature Scream 2, UPN's (4.8 million, 1.7/6) WWE Smackdown! and ABC's (3.9 million, 1.6/5) coverage of Game 5 of the Stanley Cup finals.

NBC's three-month talent search for actors to inhabit The Office -- a pilot loosely based on the BBC comedy series -- may be coming to an end. Sources said the network and Ben Silverman's Universal-based Reveille and Universal Network TV are considering The Daily Show correspondent Steven Carell for the lead, a middle manager at a paper company, played in the original series by co-creator/writer/director Ricky Gervais. Rainn Wilson (HBO's Six Feet Under), Jenna Fischer (Employee of the Month) and John Krasinski have been cast in the other three roles. Reps for NBC stressed that there is no deal in place with Carell. Sources said the situation is complicated by the fact that Carell is attached to another NBC series, the midseason comedy Come to Papa.
