Chris Rock is getting slapped back once again.
On Sunday, the comedian performed a set in Phoenix, where, according to the Los Angeles Times, he explained why he turned down hosting the next Oscars with a joke about Nicole Brown Simpson.

Referencing being slapped by Will Smith, Rock joked that going back again to host would be like asking Brown Simpson, late wife of O.J. Simpson, “to go back to the restaurant” where she famously left her eyeglasses before she was killed.
Twitter users called out Rock for joking about a murdered woman.
@chrisrock spends way too much time punching down on women. It wasn't the first time he said nasty crap about Jada Pinkett Smith, and it isn't the first time he made vile remarks about Nicole Brown Simpson. (a murdered woman) I'm done with this pos.

Chris Rock makes a stop at the 2022 Venice Film Festival thanks to Sally Potter’s short film, “Look at Me.”
The 16-minute film stars Rock as a gala organizer who tries to rein in a stubborn drummer (Javier Bardem) ahead of the on-stage performance. Tap dancer Savion Glover also stars. “Look at Me” premieres Out of Competition at Venice.
Director Potter originally conceived the concept of the film as a short story to be featured in her 2020 film “The Roads Not Taken,” starring Bardem as a writer in the early stages of dementia. “Look at Me” was filmed in 2019 over the course of five days in London and New York. The short film is produced by Christopher Sheppard.

“Rehearsals for a fundraising gala become the arena for a struggle between two men; one, the gala director and the other, a richly talented but unstable rock drummer,” the official synopsis reads. “As their battle for expression and control escalates against a relentless rhythmic backdrop, their public and private selves explosively collide.”
The teaser features a scene of intense confrontation between Rock and Bardem, giving a taste of the 16-minute short’s tone.

Sometimes, a short film is created as its own project. However, that’s not always the case, as with Sally Potter’s upcoming short, “Look At Me.” Sometimes, a short film can be created almost by accident.
As seen in the trailer for the upcoming short film, “Look At Me,” which is set to debut at this year’s Venice Film Festival, Sally Potter has created a 16-minute film about male anger as seen through the characters played by Chris Rock, Javier Bardem, and Savion Glover.

In Look at Me, Rock is thrown to the floor by Javier Bardem. Potter discusses male anger in her film and the similarities between that and Rock’s real-life experience of being slapped by Will Smith at the Oscars
When Will Smith strode on stage earlier this year at the Oscars and slapped Chris Rock for making a joke about his wife, Jada Pinkett Smith, the British director Sally Potter was putting the finishing touches to her new short, Look at Me. The film features a scene in which Rock, as an events organiser named Adam, is thrown to the floor by Leo (Javier Bardem), a drummer scheduled to perform that night at a gala fundraiser. The two men are lovers, which only heightens the tension as Leo raises his fist above Adam.
Potter was instantly aware of the parallels between Look at Me, which she shot in 2019, and the fracas at the Oscars.

Following its world premiere at the Venice Film Festival Film, Noah Baumbach’s feature take of Don DeLillo’s 1985 novel White Noise will also open the 60th New York Film Festival, making its North American premiere at Alice Tully Hall on September 30.
In the Netflix movie, Adam Driver plays Jack Gladney, an ostentatious “Hitler Studies” professor and father-of-four whose comfortable suburban college town life and marriage to the secretive Babette (Greta Gerwig) are upended after a horrifying nearby accident creates an airborne toxic event of frightening and unknowable proportions. DeLillo’s novel is known for being a pop-philosophical nightmare on unbounded consumerism, ecological catastrophe, and the American obsession with death.
“In 1985 my father and I drove from Brooklyn to see Kurosawa’s Ran open the 23rd NYFF, the same year that he brought home the hardback of Don DeLillo’s White Noise,” said Baumbach. “Opening the 60th NYFF with White...

During the gala closing ceremony of the 17th edition of the Marrakech Intl. Film Festival, the Golden Star for best film was awarded to Sudabeh Mortezai for her second feature, “Joy,” about a young Nigerian woman forced into prostitution, which recently won best film at the BFI London Film Festival.
Accepting the prize from actress Monica Bellucci, she said: “I’d like to thank all the people who helped me make the movie, especially all the women who talked to me and told me their stories and helped me write the film, and the actresses who made the film with me. I’m very happy that, with this prize, this untold story will get greater visibility.”
The jury prize went to Lila Avilés’ debut feature, “The Chambermaid,” about Eve, a maid in Mexico City’s Hotel Presidente Internacional, which Avilés describes as a “high-class prison.”

The Los Angeles Film Festival will close with the world premiere of first-time writer/director David Raymond’s psychological thriller Nomis, which will screen on Sept. 28 at the Arclight Hollywood Cinerama Dome.
The film focuses on a police trap for online predator Simon Stulls. They soon realize that the extent of his crimes go far beyond that of his own psychological trauma. Nothing quite makes sense – that is, until people involved in the case on both sides of the law start getting murdered. Nomis stars Henry Cavill, Sir Ben Kingsley, Nathan Fillion, Minka Kelly, Alexandra Daddario and Stanley Tucci.
“As a festival that has always championed new voices, it is only fitting to be closing this year with the work of a first-time writer/director,” said Jennifer Cochis, La Film Festival Director. “In Nomis, David Raymond created a thrilling film made all the more terrifying by the performances from his incredible cast.

After days of fans wondering who killed XXXTentacion, police have arrested the rapper's alleged murderer. It is being reported that the Broward County Sheriff's Dept.'s took 22-year-old Dedrick D. Williams into custody and booked him for first-degree murder in the shooting death of the young hip-hop star. According to TMZ, there was a car chase that ended with police arresting Williams, so was also charged with probation violation for a previous grand theft charge and driving without a license. He is currently being held without bond. During the vigil held on Wednesday night, XXX's mother reportedly told family and friends she was notified that an arrest had been made. (Photo Credit: Broward County Sheriff's Office) After XXX was shot and killed on Monday, June 18, his death was said to be the result of a robbery gone wrong. However, his family reportedly believes the 20-year-old hip-hop star's death was actually premeditated murder.

Twenty four hours after rapper XXXTentacion was fatally shot Monday in Florida, a representative for the Broward County sheriff’s department told Variety that there were no updates regarding suspects or a motive for the murder and the investigation is ongoing. According to police, the rapper was leaving a Riva Motorsports in Deerfield Beach, Fla., shortly before 4 p.m. when he was approached by two armed suspects. At least one of the suspects shot XXX, and they both fled in an SUV.
While police said the incident was a possible robbery — the assailants were seen removing a bag from the rapper’s car after the shooting — Onfroy had many allegations of violent crime in his past, including, most infamously, an alleged assault on his pregnant girlfriend, Geneva Ayala. Those allegations have resulted in many strong opinions posted online in the wake of the rapper’s death — which she addressed in a Tweet early Tuesday.

“Remember Me” from Disney/Pixar’s animated musical “Coco” is the likeliest winner of the Best Original Song Oscar to come along in a while (it’s written by “Let It Go” songwriters Kristen Anderson Lopez and Robert Lopez). With this category, the Academy music branch tends to lean into musicals and major pop stars singing songs over the closing credits. This year, 70 songs are eligible for the Oscars.
Also on the musical front, Alan Menken, Howard Ashman & Tim Rice wrote the song “Evermore” for “Beauty and the Beast,” performed by Josh Groban, while “La La Land” lyricists Benj Pasek and Justin Justin Paul wrote “This is Me” for “The Greatest Showman.”

“Soon to be a major motion picture.” From its publication in 1986, that was what British actor-writer Peter Turner expected of his Gloria Grahame memoir “Film Stars Don’t Die in Liverpool.” But it took three decades for the May-December romance starring Annette Bening and Jamie Bell to finally hit theaters December 29.
This could have been yet another film that never got made. But James Bond producer Barbara Broccoli knew Turner back when the young actor was in love with Grahame, his fellow lodger twice his age at a Primrose Hill rooming house. “I’ve known Peter Turner for 40 years,” said Broccoli. “I met him and Gloria together. It was a special relationship. Sometime after she passed away he wrote the memoir, and gave me the manuscript. I thought it was so beautiful.”

It’s not easy to parse the idiosyncratic minds of the Hollywood Foreign Press, a motley crew of 90 veteran entertainment media who chum up with publicists and junketing stars throughout the year as they report on movies and TV for their outlets in 55 countries. Many of these folks have been covering the usual suspects for so long, they feel like friends.
And that’s one reason why they make such different choices from other critics’ groups. The relatively senior HFPA’s taste runs the gamut from sophisticated (“Moonlight”) to mainstream (“The Martian”). They do like celebrities to come to the glitzy Golden Globes Awards show on January 7 (Daniel Day-Lewis, Margot Robbie, Jessica Chastain, Matt Damon, and Jennifer Lawrence come to mind), which is by far the most fun party night of the year in Hollywood. So that’s another factor.

Most people think that snobby Oscar voters through the decades have turned their backs on the horror genre. Not so. True, far more horror flicks have been nominated for Oscars — including many Alfred Hitchcock movies — than have won. Hitch was nominated six times for Best Director and never took home a gold statue, which is why he was awarded an Honorary Oscar in 1968. “Thank you,” he said, and walked offstage.
We scoured the record books to find 25 Oscar-winning horror movies, and herewith rank them for you.
After heated arguments among the IndieWire staff, we threw out a dozen or so monster movies (“King Kong,” “Mighty Joe Young,” “Jurassic Park”), ghost films (“Ghost”) and scary psychological thrillers like Hitchcock’s “Spellbound” that just didn’t feel like horror flicks to us.
Defining a horror movie is subjective. Is it about gore and guts and supernatural beings, or how it makes you feel?...

Matthew McConaughey saved some lucky residents of Lawrenceburg, Kentucky, a few bucks on Thanksgiving dinner this year.
As part of his partnership with Wild Turkey, the Dark Tower actor delivered over 4,500 Butterball turkeys to various homes in the town of 11,000, where the bourbon company is headquartered.
He had previously teased the endeavor on his Facebook page, but now the full video is available (above) — and the reactions are as sweet as you’d imagine.

An Interview with the makers of Infinity Baby
2017: The Weinstein’s, Toback’s, Spacey’s, C.K’s, Affleck’s, and Hoffman’s of the film world have, for the first time, been ousted from their Hollywood havens and floated down an assembly line into the best short-term rehab facilities movie money can buy.
The effect is all encompassing, not just for filmmakers & entertainers, but for politicians (George H.W Bush, Al Franken), and the civilians who consume them, too. The influence is so sweeping that, come the 40th Denver Film Festival, a Toback story derailed an interview organized between the cast and crew of the feature film Infinity Baby, that was held in a small corner of the city’s Civic Center.
In attendance: Infinity Baby’s director Bob Byington (7 Chinese Brothers, Harmony & Me), its writer Onur Tukel (Catfight, The Misogynists), and its star Trieste Kelly Dunn (Banshee,...

A few years ago, Eric Wareheim took a photo of his then-girlfriend's naked ass and sent it to an ice sculptor. Wareheim likes to throw raucous house parties "based on different parts of anatomy," he says. "I did one called Black Cock [black light and penis-themed]. Another one was Laser Boobs." The sculptor took Wareheim's photo and used it to carve an enormous ice butt, which became the centerpiece of an ass-focused party called Snow Booty. The sculpture had a canal carved into it that served as a conduit for booze, with its lower opening at the butt hole.

A tremendous central duo breathe life into Paul McGuigan’s endearing retelling of the real-life romance between a struggling young actor and Oscar-winner Gloria Grahame
There is a tremendous warmth and tenderness to this sweet, sad love story starring Annette Bening and Jamie Bell – a stranger-than-fiction true romance that unfolds in Los Angeles, New York, London and Liverpool – and there is a bittersweet rightness in a new song from Elvis Costello over the closing credits: You Shouldn’t Look at Me That Way. Director Paul McGuigan finds the balance between pathos and humour, working from Matt Greenhalgh’s adaptation of a memoir by the actor and writer Peter Turner.
As an unknown, struggling young actor in the late 70s, Turner met and fell in love with Gloria Grahame, the legendary Hollywood star and Oscar-winner who, incredibly, was living in the same north London boarding house. She was in the endgame...

Jodie Whittaker has now given her first broadcast interview since being cast as the Thirteenth Doctor last month. While ostensibly speaking on BBC Radio 6 about her new medical drama Trust Me, Doctor Who obviously dominated the conversation, and the actress had quite a lot to say about it.
First off, Whittaker spoke about how emotional it was for her to land the role, saying:
“It was incredibly emotional because my entire life has been spent… always wanting to be an actor and I wanted to do it because I always wanted to play pretend and [the Doctor] is the ultimate. I’m playing an alien, you know, a Time Lord and as a girl… who knew?
“The freedoms and the fun and the scale of the storylines. I already know Chris [Chibnall, showrunner] so I know how amazing he is. He’s come from a fan’s point of view and the direction he...

See related Luc Besson interview: Valerian, sci-fi, Adele Blanc-Sec Valerian review
In the book of Stuff That Shouldn’t Need Explaining Nowadays But Somehow Still Does, right between the parts on not making fun of deaf accents and not ridiculing fat people for their size, there’s an entry entitled Rape: Comedy. It’s pretty long, and covers the right to free speech and subversive power of laughing at dark subjects. There’s a lot on context, voice and irony. It’s nuanced stuff but concludes with an evergreen reminder: “Making rape the punchline to a seaside-postcard comedy skit is crass and cheap. Sheesh, c’mon, man. Why wouldn’t you get that?”
If said book weren’t fictional, I’d send a copy to Poldark’s creators.

Wednesday, July 12, is just a normal day for many, but not for Remo the mixed breed dog .
Today, he graduated with a doggy education Ph.D., and “Top Dog” class honors from Tails (Teaching Animals and Inmates Life Skills) just four months after enduring nearly fatal abuse.
Rescuers were stunned that despite dehydration, malnutrition, skin disease and internal and external parasites, the young pup still acted loving and friendly when rescuers found him on March 14, stuffed inside a small metal box baking in the Palatka, Florida, sun.

Twin Peaks Recap is a weekly column by Keith Uhlich covering David Lynch and Mark Frost's limited, 18-episode continuation of the Twin Peaks television series. So that's how David Lynch does an info dump. First, with a cheeky, knowing scene featuring the brothers Horne: "Jerry, what's going on?" asks Ben (Richard Beymer) after his cannabis-infused sibling (David Patrick Kelly) phones him from the woods. "I think I'm high!…I don't know where I am!" Jerry screams, perhaps speaking for a good subsection of the Twin Peaks revival audience, who have, over the six prior installments, been given only glimpses of a larger picture. Narrative momentum comes in asides; the more prevalent longueurs are reserved for atmosphere and mood, for full immersion in apparent stasis.Part 7 shakes things up, following the brotherly freak-out with several story reveals that come in quick succession. But there's a niggling sense throughout all the...

[Editor’s Note: The following contains spoilers from “Twin Peaks” Episode 7, “Part 7.”]
On Sunday’s episode of “Twin Peaks,” Laura Dern returned to give a heartbreakingly brittle performance as Diane, whom it seems is another victim of Evil Cooper’s (Kyle MacLachlan) sadistic ways.
Diane’s initial reluctance and antagonism to even discuss Cooper gave a hint that something was not right between the two of them, but when she finally confronts Evil Cooper in prison, it’s clear that she is filled with outright fear and revulsion.

When he acknowledges that the last time they met was at her house, he says, “I’ll always remember that night,” feigning fondness and civility. Apparently, voicing any sort of affection for that night is not the appropriate answer, and Diane immediately understands that something is wrong, that this is not the Cooper she once knew.

Believe it or not, we’re already at the point in the year where fall film festival announcements are being made. Yesterday afternoon, the first shot across the bow was fired when the New York Film Festival announced Richard Linklater’s Last Flag Flying as it’s Opening Night Selection. Getting a bit of a head start on things, Nyff is planting a flag, no pun intended, on this flick as an awards vehicle. Linklater nearly took home an Oscar for Boyhood, so he’s certainly due. Could this do it for him? Time will tell, but getting this prestigious slot at Nyff is a strong first step. There’s plenty of reason to be excited for this one. This film is a road trip tale, working as a sort of pseudo sequel to the classic The Last Detail. In the press release, Film Society described it thusly: “In Richard Linklater’s lyrical road movie,...

When you’re speaking to Roger Waters, there is no such thing as small talk. The mind responsible for some of the most ambitious productions in pop music history is constantly crackling with activity. Even seemingly innocuous questions, sure to elicit canned responses perfected over half a century of interviews, yield eloquent run-on sentences that jolt forward like a runaway train. The destination is often impossible to predict but, like his lyrics, the words are caustic, hilarious, cynical, hopeful and warm.

Did anyone miss the Macon plantation? I didn't think so.
Underground Season 2 Episode 7 took us back to the Macon plantation as Noah and Rosalee went in search of Ernestine and James. Of course, the pair planned on rescuing Rosalee's family and heading back north.
Unfortunately, the trip took a totally expected turn for the absolute worst.
First, we need to talk about Noahlee. What is happening with this glorious 'ship? As a Noahlee shipper, I feel like the weight on the pendulum that is their relationship.
There was friction between them – a tension that weighed heavily on the pair throughout the hour. They fought like hell to reunite, and now...I don't know.
They had sweet moments. He comforted and calmed her more than once, and she asked him to tell her about the house he planned to build for them. She also gave him a watch for Christmas.

Although those early negotiations for Tim Burton’s Dumbo movie fizzled away into nothing, the Mouse House isn’t about to give up on Will Smith yet; Deadline reports today that the Suicide Squad star is circling the Genie role in Guy Ritchie’s live-action Aladdin movie.
Negotiations are ongoing, and the outlet cautions that, much like the meeting between Smith and Disney regarding Dumbo, these talks between actor and studio are in the early, early stages.
