The Best Films of the Decade (aka "The Naughties")

Best Films Of The Decade (aka The Naughties) From Alex & Terry

List # 1

By Alex Simon

When Terry and I initially discussed writing these lists, I had a tough time thinking back on 20 films over the past decade which I was really taken with, thinking that movies have sunk so low over the past ten years, that even choosing a dozen would be a short-order job. Thirty minutes into it, my list had nearly 60 titles! After much cutting, pasting, and re-cutting and pasting, here are my top 20 films (in no particular order) of the first decade of the 21st century, dubbed by many as “the naughties.” --A.S.

1.No Country for Old Men (Coen Brothers, 2007) An elegiac blend of stark beauty and full-throttle despair from two of our finest filmmakers, set in the contemporary American West. Every frame is damn near flawless, and would have been an even more perfect vehicle for the late Sam Peckinpah. »

What Are the Movies You Identify With the Holidays?

21 December 2009 2:02 PM, PST | Cinematical | See recent Cinematical news »

There are holiday movies -- White Christmas, Rudolph The Red Nosed Reindeer, Love Actually. There are unconventional holiday movies like Die Hard, Lethal Weapon, and Kiss Kiss Bang Bang that true film fans dust off and play right alongside Bing Crosby. And then there are the movies that have absolutely nothing to do with the holiday season, but have powerful memories of the holly and the ivy. This is where you can tell me (and the world of Cinematical readers) just what they are.

Confused? Well, I'll give you mine. The biggest one for me is The Lord of The Rings series. It has absolutely nothing to do with Christmas, but if you can think back to the early years of the '00s, December was when the deluge of advertising began. They all had release dates of the third weekend in December, and the thrill just carried on through »

The Editor's Desk: The Top 10 Robert Downey Jr. Performances

17 December 2009 6:54 AM, PST | AMC - Script to Screen | See recent AMC - Script to Screen news »

2008 was clearly the year of Robert Downey Jr.  And why not? The man has gone through a lot of personal adversity (granted, most of which was his own doing), but managed to pick himself up to re-establish himself and his career. The year started for him with two smash hits, Iron Man and Tropic Thunder, and then went on to give a solid performance in "The Soloist".

Now, 2010 seems to be set for another huge year for Downey.  On Christmas day, just over a week away, the new film "Sherlock Holmes" will open.  Then to kick off the Summer movie season in May, Downey returns as Tony Starks in "Iron Man 2".

So as we enter this season of Downey, I thought I'd take a moment to look back at his films up to this point, and offer my personal list of his best performances. (Remember, this is a list of his best performances, »

Pee-wee Herman creator Paul Reubens wants ‘Playhouse’ movie, reintroduce character to new generation

12 December 2009 5:32 AM, PST | ReelLoop.com | See recent Reel Loop news »

Peace, love, jobs, forget all that stuff. What the world needs now, is Pee-wee, sweet Pee-wee.

In a recent interview with the AP, Paul Reubens, better known as Pee-wee Herman, talked about his plans to reintroduce his iconic character back into society. His first step? His live stage show The Pee-Wee Herman Show. His second step? A feature-length film:

“Well, you know, I really want to make a movie version of The Playhouse, my Saturday morning kid show. [The live show] seemed like a great way to do it: Reintroduce it, get back out there, introduce Pee-wee to the new generation that didn’t know about it,” he said.

His Saturday morning TV show, Pee-wee’s Playhouse, was canned in 1991 when Reubens was arrested for indecent exposure.

The Pee-wee Herman Show will run at the Club Nokia theater in Los Angeles from January 12th to February 7th. It will feature 20 puppets, along with many original cast members, »

Star Trek Writers Are Not Producing Doc Savage

28 October 2009 4:45 AM, PDT | Reelzchannel.com | See recent ReelzChannel news »

Contrary to our previous report that Star Trek screenwriters Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman would be producing an adaptation of Doc Savage written by Lethal Weapon and Kiss Kiss Bang Bang's Shane Black, it looks like Neil Moritz and Ori Marmur (The Green Hornet) are producing it instead.

AICN originally named Orci and Kurtzman as the producers, while Collider pointed out the error, maintaining that the rest of the original report is true. Doc Savage will be penned by Black, who may direct, and the movie will take place in the 1930s instead of being updated for modern times.

Whoever produces Doc Savage, we can't wait to see the pulp world's first physician/surgeon/scientist/adventurer/inventor/explorer/researcher/musician in a better movie than 1975's camp classic Doc Savage: The Man of Bronze.

Shane Black to Helm ‘Doc Savage’ Movie

27 October 2009 8:00 AM, PDT | The Flickcast | See recent The Flickcast news »

Not many people outside of the world of film know Shane Black by name, but most certainly do by reputation. Black is best known for being the driving creative writing force behind such films as Monster Squad, Last Boy Scout, Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, and all of the good Lethal Weapon films.

Black has been bouncing around for the past few years, with rumors that he would be working on a revamped Doc Savage property, with Schwarzenegger as a strong contender back in the 90s. Well, Arnie may be out, but Black is most definitely in, definitely writing and possibly directing, according to Collider.

“[the film] will be set in the 30s and not modernize the story….The producers of “Doc Savage” are Neil Moritz and Ori Marmur.  They’re the guys who are also producing “The Green Hornet”, “Battle: Los Angeles”, and “Jack the Giant Killer.”  Furthermore, they have a deal »

Doc Savage Movie Finds Scribe Shane Black

26 October 2009 4:22 AM, PDT | Screenrush | See recent Screenrush news »

Shane Black, the screenwriter who penned Lethal Weapon and Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, is at work on an adaptation of the 1930's pulp, alpha male, hero series, Doc Savage. Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman, the production duo who brought audiences the rebooted Star Trek franchise and the Transformers films, are behind the pic to produce.

According to Aint It Cool News, the film will not be a modernized adaptation of the hero adventure series but a period piece set in the 30's. Black told AICN that it will be an original Doc Savage story that attempts to capture the feeling and mood of the whole collection of Lester Dent's work. At the moment, Kurztman and Orci are in the process of looking for a director.

The series main writer, Lester Dent, once described Doc Savage as a mix of Sherlock Holmes' deductive abilities, Tarzan's outstanding physical abilities, Craig Kennedy's scientific education, »

Shane Black Wrestles With Doc Savage

26 October 2009 12:39 AM, PDT | EmpireOnline | See recent EmpireOnline news »

Screenwriter and latterday director Shane Black (Lethal Weapon, The Last Boy Scout, Kiss Kiss Bang Bang) went bowling with Harry Knowles over the weekend, and revealed that he's working on a Doc Savage script, for the ubiquitous producing duo Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci.A Doc Savage project has long been in development hell; mooted as an Arnie vehicle a decade ago. A classic "adventurer", the character stems from the pulp magazines of the 30s and 40s. Described by principle writer Lester Dent as a cross between Sherlock Holmes, Tarzan and Abraham Lincoln, Clark Savage Jr was trained as a youth by a team of scientists who made him practically superhuman: the colour of his skin, eyes and hair lent him the alias The Man of Bronze. He appeared in getting on for 200 novels between 1933 and 1949 (not to mention a handful in the 1990s), plus comics, a radio series, and »

Shane Black Writing a Doc Savage Script for Kurtzman/Orci

25 October 2009 8:40 AM, PDT | firstshowing.net | See recent FirstShowing.net news »

Anyone a big fan of the 1930's pulp comics character Doc Savage created by Henry W. Ralston? According to Ain't It Cool News, Kiss Kiss Bang Bang screenwriter Shane Black will be writing a Doc Savage script for Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman (Eagle Eye, Star Trek) to produce. Harry Knowles ran into Shane at a party recently in Austin and was told by Black that "he is preparing to write the script." Apparently a Doc Savage movie has been in development for a long time without much real progress, but with Black on-board working on a new screenplay, and with Kurtzman/Orci producing, it may actually get somewhere this time. Harry also asked Black if they were modernizing the character. Shane's response was that "the character can not be separated from the 30s." He also added that, "he has decided that Doc needs to have his Fabulous Five. It »

Shane Black Writing New 'Doc Savage' Movie

25 October 2009 1:05 AM, PDT | GetTheBigPicture.net | See recent Get The Big Picture news »

Any chance I get, I tell people to watch Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, written and directed by Shane Black. It's an easier sell now than wehn it came out, thanks to Robert Downey Jr.'s ascendence. Bit it's a great, funny, weird little mystery movie.

Of course, Black is best knows as the writer of Lethal Weapon, and he's hammered out a few other good scripts, too, over the years. Now, Ain't It Cool News says he'll be writing a new version of the classic comic book character Doc Savage. Produced by the team of Orci and Kurtzman (Star Trek, Transformers), Doc Saveage will not be the complete overhaul a lot of these movies tend to be. In fact, the word is it will be based in the 1930s, much like the comic's origin. »

Shane Black Scribing a Doc Savage Movie for Star Trek Producers

24 October 2009 8:50 PM, PDT | Slash Film | See recent Slash Film news »

Yay? Nifty screenwriter Shane Black (Lethal Weapon, Kiss Kiss Bang Bang) is apparently at work on a new adaptation of Doc Savage---the pulpy 1930s alphamale hero---for the tentpole production duo Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman (Transformers and Star Trek franchises). What's more, Black let it be known to AICN that the project will be a period piece set in the aforementioned decade rather than one in modern day complete with hoverboards and H1N1.  Consult a Ouija board or find details on what a Doc Savage is after the jump... One need not look further than Guy Ritchie's upcoming Sherlock Holmes and Spielberg's Tintin and Matt Helm projects, the latter albeit modernized, to witness a resurgence in old school heroes. Since his first appearances in '30s pulp magazines, the Savage character has appeared, a la The Shadow, in myriad mediums, including radio, women's poolside fantasies, television and a maligned 1975 film. »

Road Talk with 'Trucker' Star Michelle Monaghan

Oscar voters often love it when beautiful models, or starlets accustomed to playing the one-dimension girlfriend roles, reveal that they can actually be serious actresses when given a chance. The transformation has worked for the likes of Jessica Lange and Charlize Theron in the past – and this year, Michelle Monaghan looks to be shaking up the perceptions of people used to seeing her in the likes of “Made of Honor” and “Kiss Kiss Bang Bang” with her tough, subtle work in James Mottern’s “Trucker.”

Trucker, which has its theatrical release today, is writen and directed by James Mottern and stars 33-year-old Michelle Monaghan, best known for her roles in Kiss Kiss Bang Bang,Gone Baby Gone, and Mission Impossible III. With a budget under 1.5 millions dollars, it's mostly quiet, modestly-scaled film–all the better for Monaghan, a longtime supporting actress, to stand out. A former model from Iowa, Monaghan, who also acted as an executive producer on the project, plays a reckless long-haul trucker who is forced to consider settling down when her 11-year-old son (Jimmy Bennett) re-enters life after her ex-boyfriend (Benjamin Bratt) falls ill. »

For the first time since “Kiss Kiss Bang Bang”, Michelle Monaghan and Robert Downey Jr. (no word on Native American Joe Pesci) will reunite in “Due Date”, a comedy directed by Todd Phillips (”Old School”, “The Hangover”), joining the already cast Zach Galifianakis. The plot involves an expectant father (Downey Jr.) who engages in a cross-country road trip with a college slacker (Galifianakis) so that he can arrive in time for the birth of his child. Michelle Monaghan Due to Join Hangover Team and Robert Downey Jr.

18 September 2009 9:51 AM, PDT | Reelzchannel.com | See recent ReelzChannel news »

Todd Phillips took a chance when he forced Warner Bros. to let him cast Bradley Cooper, Ed Helms, and Zach Galifianakis in The Hangover, but his gamble paid off when Hangover became the highest grossing R-rated comedy ever in July. Up next for Phillips is Due Date, a road trip comedy about an expectant father (Robert Downey Jr.) trying to race home to see the birth of his child alongside an annoying travel partner (Galifianakis).

Variety reports that Michelle Monaghan is set to join the comedy as Downey Jr.'s pregnant wife, reuniting her with her Kiss Kiss Bang Bang co-star. Shooting begins this fall.

Kiss Kiss Bang Bang Reunion: Michelle Monaghan Joins Due Date

18 September 2009 2:00 AM, PDT | Slash Film | See recent Slash Film news »

When Due Date, the next film from Todd Phillips, was announced, I wasn't all that interested in seeing the director do another road trip comedy. Then Zach Galifianakis signed on, followed soon by Robert Downey, Jr. Now Michelle Monaghan has taken the film's female lead role. A Kiss Kiss Bang Bang reunion? Can you say "hell, yeah"? Monaghan sadly might not have a huge screen presence in the film. Variety reports that she plays the pregnant wife of Downey; the whole point of the film is that he is racing to make it home before she gives birth. Somehow he pulls in a whacko traveling companion, played by Galifianakis. So expect a bunch of shots of her worrying and/or pissed off, maybe a few remote phone calls between her and Downey, then some sort of reunion at the end. Speaking of reunions, can we get a little Val Kilmer in this? »

Monaghan Joins Downey Jr.'s Due Date

Good news for fans of Shane Black’s wonderful comedic thriller, Kiss Kiss Bang Bang – which, of course, should include all right-thinking people (and, frankly, if you’re not a fan, stop reading this, go watch the film, become a fan and then come back here). Robert Downey Jr. and Michelle Monaghan are set to reunite in the new Todd Phillips comedy, Due Date.Monaghan, so brilliant in Kiss Kiss as Harmony, today signed on to the road movie, which stars Downey Jr. and Zach Galifianakis as a mismatched duo racing across America in a desperate attempt to make the birth of Downey’s child.Monaghan will play the pregnant wife, which we hope doesn’t mean that she gets little screen-time with Downey, for the two have more chemistry than Boots.Filming starts on Monday, with the film scheduled for release next November; after filming wraps, Phillips and Galifianakis »

Monaghan Has a Due Date

18 September 2009 12:00 AM, PDT | www.canmag.com | See recent CanMag news »

This seems like a natural pairing. Considering that it was Michelle Monaghan (and Val Kilmer) who co-starred with Robert Downey Jr. during his early comeback in Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, I'm glad to see that at least she will be sharing the camera with him again. This time, however, it shouldn't be as twisted.

Michelle Monaghan for Due Date

Directed by Todd Phillips, Due Date will have Monaghan portray the pregnant wife of a guy (Downey) who races home in hopes of arriving before she delivers their first child. He takes on a mismatched traveling companion (Galifianakis).

If have a need to see Monaghan back on the silverscreen, you can catch the actress early October with the release of Trucker. »
