Is P Diddy the new king of shopping TV? | Stuart Heritage

4 December 2009 3:59 AM, PST | The Guardian - TV News | See recent The Guardian - TV News news »

How does rapper P Diddy compare with the top shopping TV presenters from the UK?

P Diddy's day job essentially involves mumbling about himself in a vaguely congratulatory manner, so it's no wonder that he makes such a brilliant home-shopping presenter. Earlier this week, the rapper turned up at the studios of America's Home Shopping Network to shill his new fragrance, I Am King. And watching him in action was like watching Michelangelo go to work on the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel - only better, because Michelangelo didn't introduce himself with a kickass video of him riding a jetski in a tuxedo.

P Diddy's turn on Hsn was a masterclass for so many reasons - he reminded us that I Am King had won at "the Oscars of beauty", he gave a shout-out "to all the Scorpios" and he pointed out that his perfume was a designer »

MGM Officially For Sale

18 November 2009 11:23 AM, PST | ScreenRant.com | See recent Screen Rant news »

Back in September we reported on the financial troubles of movie studio Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer (or MGM for short). The studio has racked up a debt of a whopping $3.5 billion (yowza!) and, at the time, it was, “teetering on the edge of bankruptcy.” The company has two big properties currently in its possession, those being the Bond franchise and the upcoming Hobbit adaptation.

Luckily, but not surprisingly, both those properties are quite safe, with Warner Bros. stepping in to foot the bill for production on The Hobbit, while also handling domestic distribution for the film (which will be split into two parts). As I said, no surprise there that the two franchises are safe (guaranteed box office bank if ever there were any), but it was nice for that to be made official.

However, specific film properties aside, the trouble for MGM at large is that it was possibly going to auction of its assets. »

A Conversation with Zoe Bell

26 October 2009 2:11 AM, PDT | Fangoria | See recent Fangoria news »

An accomplished stunt performer whose journey to Kill Bill was chronicled as the subject of the excellent documentary Double Dare, Zoe Bell has become a fixture in genre fare not only for her impressive stunt skills - but also her acting chops.

After a leading role in the Grindhouse installment Death Proof, Bell's recent work includes Bitch Slap (screening at our Trinity Of Terrors this weekend), a starring turn in Angel Of Death, and the most recent Tarantino effort Inglourious Basterds. Jason Anders recently sat down with bell for a discussion about her craft.

Ja:  Let's start off with talking about the film Death Proof, and your initial reaction to the script by Quentin Tarantino which had you playing yourself.  You originally thought this was a joke, right? Zb:  Well no, I didn't think the movie was a joke.  He was on his way over to my house with the script, »

Raimi & del Toro to create family horror films

6 October 2009 12:06 PM, PDT | SoundOnSight | See recent SoundOnSight news »

The idea of creating family friendly horror has been around for years. The 90's saw one of its biggest emergence with the highly popular Goosebumps and Fear Street book series and television series such as “Are You Afraid of the Dark” and the short lived “The Nightmare Room.” However, it was rare to see horror films that were considered family friendly without being combined with other film genres. Films like Ernest Scared Stupid combined the comedic with horror and Monster Squad combined the action, making these films suitable for younger film audiences. But what ever happened to straight out horror? More importantly, can a true horror film exist for younger audiences? This may be properly answered in the next few years. Two of today's well known directors have created film companies that will produce family friendly horror films soon to be seen in theaters or directly to DVD. Director Guillermo del Toro, »

Sam Raimi Launches 'Spooky Pictures,' A Family-Friendly Horror Label

2 October 2009 11:00 AM, PDT | MTV Movies Blog | See recent MTV Movies Blog news »

I maintain that the greatest news of the week is Danny Trejo starring in "Predators," but I think I've just found a close personal second -- Sam Raimi, director of this year's phenomenal "Drag Me to Hell," is sticking with horror.

Variety reports that Raimi, the puppetmaster behind the "Evil Dead" films and their "Army of Darkness" sequel, will spin a new horror banner out of his pre-existing Ghost House label: none other than Spooky Pictures, which aims to create new thriller franchises for family-friendly audiences. Their first feature will be "The Substitute," a remake of a Danish thriller with Scott Derrickson ("The Exorcism of Emily Rose") set to direct.

By now, you're likely asking: "Did that idiot really just say that Sam Raimi's family-friendly horror label is the second best movie news of the week?" Yes, I did say that, and in my opinion, it really is great news. »

Coincidence? Just a few weeks ago Guillermo del Toro announced that he was setting up Disney Double Dare You, a specialty division specifically for making scary animated films for kids. Now one of the other best scaremasters working today, Sam Raimi, is doing essentially the same thing. In a press release yesterday Raimi announced that he was creating Spooky Picture, a division of his Ghost House label, with the intention of making "scary movies for a family audience." First one up will be The Substitute, an adaptation of a Danish thriller about a class of 6th graders trying to prove that their teacher is an evil alien. Sam Raimi’s Substitute is Spooky

2 October 2009 6:09 AM, PDT | Atomic Popcorn | See recent Atomic Popcorn news »

Sam Raimi’s Ghost House horror genre production label will now branch into a new one — Spooky Pictures, which will focus on delivering horror/thriller films to family audiences. This seems odd coming right off the heels of Disney’s deal with Guillermo Del Toro to create Double Dare You.

The first film to be produced under Spooky Pictures will be The Substitute, a remake of a Danish film by Ole Bornedal. The remake will be directed by Scott Derrickson, who previously helmed The Day the Earth Stood Still and The Exorcism of Emily Rose. The film deals with “a terrified sixth-grade class as the students race to reveal to their parents that their new substitute teacher is an evil alien being.”

The Faculty for minors? I say it has potential.

Raimi will produce the film with his longtime creative partner Rob Tapert, who goes back to the Evil Dead days. »

MGM On The Edge of Bankruptcy

25 September 2009 1:09 PM, PDT | ScreenRant.com | See recent Screen Rant news »

One of the biggest and most well-known movie studios out there is Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, or MGM, known for its classic logo with the lion roaring during the opening credits - an almost expected introduction to many of our movies from the last 85 years.

Well, we may have to get used to some movies without that logo at some point in the near future (at least for a while), as today we get word of very complex financial problems occurring at MGM, which basically boils down to the studio, “teetering on the edge of bankruptcy.”

Nikki Finke over at Deadline Hollywood is reporting a very long conference call (or series of calls that some sources say lasted for six and a half hours) took place between the studio and bondholders, in which the studio made a “desperate plea for money because the studio had missed its numbers and was going to be out of funds very soon. »

Could departure of Disney chairman sink Pirates of the Caribbean 4?

20 September 2009 6:52 AM, PDT | The Geek Files | See recent The Geek Files news »

The dramatic exit of Walt Disney Studios chairman Dick Cook appears to have cast some doubts on plans for a fourth Pirates of the Caribbean film.

Johnny Depp, star of the studio's Pirates franchise, said he has a potential deal in place for Pirates 4 that depends on how good the script is, but adds that his passion has been severely dampened by Cook's abrupt departure.

"There's a fissure, a crack in my enthusiasm at the moment," Depp said. "It was all born in that office."

The actor was "shocked and very sad" about the loss of Cook, who had wooed him to Disney, offered him the Captain Jack Sparrow role and supported his eccentric portrayal of the character when other executives were "opposed to my body language."

Speaking to the Los Angeles Times, Depp said: "He's instantly trustworthy. And you generally don't meet people at the studios you trust. He's a rare beast. »
