The British production company Aardman, best known for award-winning shorts such as the evergreen Creature Comforts and short-to-feature franchises like Wallace & Gromit and Shaun the Sheep, specializes in “Claymation,” stop-motion animation done using figurines made of clay and similar material. Even by the glacial standards of animation practice, they take ages to produce new work. You might say their output is rare as hens’ teeth, to quote a Britishism, which is apt because their most successful feature (and the highest-grossing stop-motion film ever) is still Chicken Run (2000), a family-friendly film set on a 1950s chicken farm that stars a brood of fowl with anatomically incorrect, but very Aardman-esque, over-bitey teeth.
But good things come to those who wait, and the studio’s sequel, Chicken Run: Dawn of the Nugget, is a worthy successor. Rounding up the feathered friends who made a break for freedom in the last film, led...

Five years after reaping an Best Animated Feature bid at the Oscars for “Shaun the Sheep Movie,” Aardman Animations returns to the race with the sequel “Farmageddon.” The film was released in the UK in 2019 and contended at the BAFTAs last spring. Netflix has streamed the film stateside and it is well-positioned to number among this year’s five nominees at the Academy Awards.
Fans of the stop-motion style of animation know that Aardman is a leader in the field: it has earned eight nominations for Best Animated Short and won that Oscar three times. And the British studio pulled off a big upset at the Academy Awards in 2006 with a win for “Wallace & Gromit: The Curse of the Were-Rabbit” over another stop-motion film “Corpse Bride” and the Japanese anime entry “Howl’s Moving Castle.”

This lively documentary about the band Madness is chiefly for die-hard fans but cheeky enough to have wider appeal
The movie year began with Suggs reminiscing in Julien Temple’s playful collage My Life Story. Now we find saxophonist and songwriter Lee “Thommo” Thompson skanking down memory lane in Jeff Baynes’ lively oral history of all things Madness. If the framing is broadly conventional – that basic, BBC 4-courting mix of talking heads, underexposed archive footage and lovingly framed album covers – Baynes has one wild card up his sleeve: Thompson himself, who appears, often dragged-up, miming to the testimonies of his mother, sister, wife and other witnesses – a technique inspired either by Clio Barnard’s The Arbor, Nick Park’s Creature Comforts, or the band’s own Top of the Pops appearances.
It’s true, certainly, to the larky spirit of Madness, and the wider theatricality of the post-punk scene into which the group emerged.

Many eons ago, when the Earth was young and stop-motion dinosaurs battled tooth and tusk on the plains – let's call it the pre-Pleistocene era – a meteor plummeted from the sky. The aftermath, known as the Cretaceous–Tertiary extinction, wiped out our giant-lizard friends; Early Man, the latest from the English animation house Aardman, suggests that an even bigger gamechanging moment in the planet's history occurred. Somewhere in the area that would one day be blessed with the regal name "Manchester" – per a disclaimer, "around lunch-time," a joke that carbon-dates back to prehistoric times – a random,...

Creature Comforts ran on CBS for only three weeks before being pulled due to low ratings. The British version of the claymation show has been a big hit for some time, so why didn't the Us incarnation catch on?
Series Producer Gareth Owen tells us, "If we had to do it all again, I don't think there's a lot we would change. The main problem appears to be sustaining interest over a half hour show. All the UK shows apart from one Christmas episode were under 10 minutes, which seems to be an ideal length for a 'talking heads' show. However writing plots, scripts or storylines goes against the rules of Creature Comforts and is not something that we would ever do."
Though short-lived, the series earned a small but devoted group of fans. That fact isn't lost on Owen who says, "We are extremely grateful to all the people who...
