The Day After Tomorrow. Knowing. 2012. What do all of these movies have in common (other than being complete wastes of time and money)? They are all crappy thrillers where the protagonist learns of the coming apocalypse and, using that knowledge, tries to save the earth. All of them were also number one on opening weekend and considered financial successes. So you know what that means: we get another one. Producer of favorites like Doom, Imagine That, Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen, and G.I. Joe: Rise of Cobra, Lorenzo di Bonaventura and Lionsgate are now producing Panopticon, the newest from director Peter Cornwell and writer Craig Rosenberg, according to Variety. The film follows a salesman (enter "everyman" actor here) who receives a "pre-recorded message to himself" telling him that he has to save the world from certain doom. Documentary filmmaker Chris Smith and investigative reporter Michael Ruppert have a story to tell.  The truth here is as far beyond inconvenient as a modern BMW is beyond the pony express.  If there is ever a film that makes you want to bunker down with gallons of fresh water and a million cans of baked beans it is not The Day After, or even The Day After Tomorrow, it is Collapse.

Taking a more than a cue from Errol Morris and his Robert McNamara doc, The Fog Of War, Smith plants Ruppert in a chair and has him draw out the map of the world going to hell in a hand basket over the next decade, give or take a few years.  His picture is not a pretty one.  But it is compelling due to Ruppert's level-headed fanaticism on the subject (some might call it passion).  Peak Oil, economic derivatives, »

Tobey Maguire's Next Role: 'Prisoners of Trebek' or Bilbo in 'The Hobbit'?

In the tradition of great movies based on real game shows (Quiz Show; Slumdog Millionaire), Tobey Maguire is said to be producing and starring in a film called Prisoners of Trebek, based on a true story about a guy who found romance while attempting to master Jeopardy. Pajiba has the exclusive scoop on the project, which was scripted by The Hoax screenwriter William Wheeler and is being likened to the work of Charlie Kaufman. Producing with Maguire's company is Mark Gordon, who worked with Wheeler on The Hoax and regularly collaborates with Roland Emmerich (2012; The Day After Tomorrow).

Roland Emmerich Has Way More Money Than You

Director Roland Emmerich better hope and pray his apocalyptic thrill-ride 2012 doesn't come true. That would only leave him two years to spend the reported $100 million dollars he'll be seeing as part of his directing deal (according to The Wrap). Emmerich signed a $20 million advance against 20% of the film's gross profits, which basically means he's now reached Scrooge McDuck levels of wealth. Time to move to Duckburg, Roland, and invest in a diving board so you can jump off and swim around in all your loot. He's not just rich, he's EmmeRICH.

While 2012 did well in the Us (not great, but very good with $149 million and counting), the toppling of buildings and exploding of cities apparently knows no language barrier, causing the film to rack up a staggering $450 million dollars in its current theatrical run overseas. While the movie hardly seems sequel-ready, Emmerich has made some noise about continuing the 2012 adventures-in-running-away-from-stuff-blowing-up as a television series. »

The Twilight Saga: New Moon dawned with a hot-blooded estimated $140.7 million on approximately 8,500 screens at 4,024 sites over the weekend, charting as the third highest-grossing opening behind only The Dark Knight and Spider-Man 3 and the biggest of 2009. With the advent of New Moon, not to mention an excellent showing by The Blind Side, overall business surged 56 percent over the same weekend last year when Twilight and Bolt debuted and was the second-highest seen in history, behind the weekend that The Dark Knight opened.

On its opening day, New Moon shattered the records for opening day ($72.7 million) and midnight showings ($26.3 million), thanks to the rush of its fervent fan base. The End Of The World proved to be a massive attraction for moviegoers as Roland Emmerich's 2012 opened this weekend with an earth-shattering $225million at the worldwide box office.

Ticket sales in the Us and Canada brought in $65million, with the foreign tally of $160million from 105 countries, led by France.

Sony's Columbia Pictures said the film scored the highest worldwide opening for an original film not based on an established franchise, brand or best-seller.

In global terms, it ranks No 9 for film openings, behind (from No1 to 8) Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, Spider-Man 3, Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End, Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith, Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King and The Da Vinci Code.

Remakes. Sequels. Prequels. Screen adaptations of books, cartoons, comics, and TV shows. It can’t be denied that the film industry is starting to run rampant with movies based on something that has already been done. What’s shocking, though, is just how few original ideas Hollywood is really seeing.

Wikipedia recently posted a list of the highest grossing films of the past decade. In the top 20, only one film wasn’t based off of any other previous idea. One.

Think it gets better looking at a larger sample size? Think again. In the top 30, only two films were based on original ideas, and in the top 50 a total of nine were considered original.

The interesting thing about the nine original concepts is that all but two were animated films, and of those seven animated films five were from Pixar, with Finding Nemo being the only one in the top »
