I’ve been showrunning original and branded digital content since 2006. Along with my company, Happy Little Guillotine Studios, we sort-of-accidentally created one of the first digital series (called Break a Leg) in 2006 and by some combination of luck, skill and (perhaps most importantly) agility, we’ve managed to survive and thrive in the space ever since.
Strangely though, as we’re coming to the end of 2017 and I’ve been reading articles about the state of digital media, I’m finding myself with a strong sense of déjà vu – apparently, the problems in 2017 are identical to the problems of 2006 (minus President Voldemort and his merry Nazi band).
That is: Where’s the money? How do you get people to watch your series? How do you scale? How do you attract brands? It’s dying! It’s the future! It’s dying again! Now TV is dying! Now TV is the only path forward!

At least Nancy Kerrigan’s sense of humor is in no danger of being broken. After being told to “break a leg” on “Dancing With the Stars” by her fellow former figure skater Kristi Yamaguchi last month, Kerrigan proved that she had a sense of humor about the situation by posing with Yamaguchi and a sign reading “Break a Leg Nancy!” Yamaguchi posted a photo of the get-together via Instagram on Monday, writing, “A special sign to cheer on my roomie @nancyakerrigan vote!!!” Also Read: Nancy Kerrigan Told to 'Break a Leg' on 'DWTS' by Kristi Yamaguchi Later,...

Nick Viall and Peta Murgatroyd found themselves facing an elimination on Monday's Dancing With the Stars after their tango was not so well received by the judges.
The Bachelor star and his pro partner attempted a routine to Lady Gaga's "Poker Face," but only got a score of 26 out of 40, with judge Len Goodman giving them a six. This made them one of the bottom two couples of the night, but ultimately it was Charo and Keo Motsepe who were eliminated.

Nancy Kerrigan and pro partner Artem Chigvintsev earned some pretty high scores for their samba on Monday's Dancing With the Stars.
The 47-year-old figure skater and Chigvintsev earned a score of 33 out of 40 -- with Len Goodman giving them a nine -- for their dance to Ricky Martin's "Shake Your Bon Bon." Kerrigan admitted to Et's Nischelle Turner that she's a huge fan of Martin's music, and was thrilled to meet the Puerto Rican musician. "It's one of those moments where you're really embarrassed, but you cannot help it," she quipped. "I used to compete to his songs, it was a huge influence in my career as a dancer."

It's all in good fun. When it came time for Nancy Kerrigan to hit the ballroom stage as a competitor on Dancing With the Stars, longtime friend and fellow former ice skater Kristi Yamaguchi knew exactly how to cheer her on from the audience. The Olympic champion held a sign that read, "Break A Leg Nancy!" Of course, it was hard to ignore the history of the pun. On the first night of the competition three weeks ago, Yamaguchi urged Kerrigan to "break a leg" in a harmless tweet. However, the Internet was quick to point out the irony in the athlete's words as Kerrigan was famously attacked in 1994 by someone hired by competitor Tonya Harding's ex-husband and bodyguard to break...

Nancy Kerrigan has a sense of humor.
Last week, Twitter had a field day when Kristi Yamaguchi wished Kerrigan luck on Dancing with the Stars by using the expression “break a leg,” an awkward choice of words giving Kerrigan’s history.
But showing there were no hard feelings, Kerrigan posed for a photo with Yamaguchi — who won the Mirrorball Trophy on season 6 of DWTS — with the pair holding a sign that read, “Break a leg, Nancy.”

I think I either just gained a ton of respect for Kristi Yamaguchi’s twisted sense of humor or I just clarified that Yamaguchi is not the brightest star in the sky. When you tell an entertainer to “Break a Leg” before a performance, it’s quite normal. In fact it’s tradition and a fine custom. But when the person you’re telling “break a leg” to suffered a broken leg during the 1994 Olympics that was one of the biggest figure skating scandals and stories of all time, you might want to retract the statement. Of course, as with all the recent cast additions, the identity of their characters has not been disclosed. There’s no denying it: Actors are a superstitious bunch. Maybe it’s the (obvious) flare for the dramatic, the nightly thrill of live performance, or the awareness that careers can turn overnight. Regardless of the cause, here are nine fun (and serious) superstitions that thespians swear by. Did somebody just say “Macbeth?” “Break a Leg”Well-wishers should always replace the phrase “good luck” with its theatrical substitute “break a leg.” According to Steppenwolf Theatre Company, the saying has a variety of possible origins. It may come from the ancient Greek practice of stomping feet instead of applauding, the Elizabethan term for bowing (to break the leg), the Vaudevillian practice of keeping actors just barely offstage (to break the leg of the curtain was to enter the playing space, and thus, get paid), or from understudies (jokingly) wishing actors would “break a leg” so that their standbys could perform. The Sherlock Holmes played by Benedict Cumberbatch is the most brilliant problem solver on television. The Sherlock Holmes played by Jonny Lee Miller in Elementary comes pretty close, but I give the edge to the “high functioning” sociopath with the “mind palace” in his head. The third and final installment of Sherlock’s third season challenged the master detective with a most vexing conundrum, a test of both imagination and morality, one that has become increasingly popular in our hero fiction of late: To kill or not to kill.

This Week on Stage: An actor breaks a leg, old Jews tell jokes, and a 'Cock' fight wows Off Broadway
That old actor’s adage “Break a leg” is not supposed to be taken literally. But that message apparently didn’t make it to Michael McKean, the Laverne & Shirley and This is Spinal Tap alum now starring in the hit Broadway revival Gore Vidal’s The Best Man. The actor was hospitalized Tuesday with a broken leg after being struck by a car in New York City; James Lecesne will be playing his role as a presidential campaign manager for the foreseeable future.

True story. When I pressed play on the DVR to write up this last Smash post of the season, the TV "resumed play" in the middle of the episode somehow though I'd already watched the whole thing through. The mute button was on. Chorus girl Ivy (Megan Hilty) was pulling a ring box from her purse. The ring wasn't hers but fellow chorus girl Karen's (Katharine McPhee) whose fiance had left the ring in Ivy's hotel room after a drunken one night stand. At the exact moment that Ivy opened the ring box, the unmistakably familiar siren song of the ice cream truck sounded outside my apartment.
I'm not sure where I'm going with this so let it suffice to say that this final episode of Smash's first season was nothing at all like a refreshing creamy treat. The only similarity was that I felt sick to my stomach after devouring it.

If any performance of any show needed that fortune, it was this preview of "Bombshell." They had a unprepared lead with ill-fitted costumes, a new ending, and, with the exception of Derek a lack of faith that they would succeed.
But succeed they did!
Smash had a few questionable storylines through its season, but in the finale it got it almost all right. The battle for the role of Marilyn once again was a decision between Karen Cartwright and Ivy Lynn. Based on the poll we did, most of you should be happy that Karen came out on top.
In the end, that girl persevered and deserved it. Especially since no one but Derek believed in her. Add in Ivy's continual sabotage, it's a miracle Karen didn't do worse than run off to the dressing room to let out a few tears. And she was brilliant. She was Marilyn!

When Uma Thurman’s movie star Rebecca Duvall makes her dramatic entrance into the Smash rehearsal room tonight, it’s to save the play-within-the-show, Bombshell, with her film-world fabulousness. But though Thurman signed on to the series for a five-episode arc in December, way before Smash turned out to be anything but, now she’s here to rescue the TV show, too.
With any luck, Rebecca will demand they drop the title Bombshell — no producer in his/her right mind would put “bomb” in the title of a make-it-or-break-it musical. Critics like puns way too much (see sentence two, above...

Note: Do not read on if you have not seen Episode 7 of Lifetime's "Project Runway All Stars."
There are only seven designers left on "Project Runway All Stars" and the pressure is building ... or at least they keep telling us that.
This week's episode begins with Jerell's deep thoughts about Rami's elimination the week before (or for him probably the night before): "The fact that he's gone is a bit of a game changer," says Jerell, who quickly recovers. "Can't be mad at that because eventually they all have to go, so I can get my check." Always with the sass, that guy.
The designers meet their lovely host Angela Lindvall at Circle in the Square theater, which Austin describes as representing "the pulse of New York in Times Square." Sure. If you think the city's biggest tourist trap is its heart and soul then Time Square is definitely it.

Tonight's lineup features 'The Voice,' 'The Bachelor,' 'Smash,' and more: What will you be watching?
This is the kind of day where having multiple TVs (and multiple DVRs, for that matter) would really pay off: Monday night’s lineup includes no less than six can’t-miss shows that are competing with one another in their time slots. But on the off chance you inexplicably don’t have a television for every room in your house, then how to choose, PopWatchers?
The Voice is riding high off its post-Super Bowl second-season premiere, which offered Mickey Mouse Club reunions, sparring judges, and contestants you can’t help but already root for (go Tony, Juliette, and Chris!). Seems...

Well there we have it! After a few weeks of teasing, American Horror Story put it all out on the table last night in regards to one of the central characters' fates, confirming some of our suspicions and giving us even more cause to wonder if Anyone will be alive by the time the season ends in two weeks (my money's on Marcy - she's a scrapper!).
The episode also tied up a few more loose ends and filled in some more chinks in the masonry involving Larry's burns and his missing ghost family.
Let's join them at the cutest li'l tea party in Hell to discuss, shall we?
The episode begins - as all episodes should, really - with a close-up of an enormous baked ham that has been punctured all over with spears of pineapple and maraschino cherry. It is like a juicy, delicious Saint Sebastien. Seriously -...

Check out Nina's original design! Is there anything she can't do? Canadian royalty Nina Dobrev was back on her home turf Sept. 27, co-hosting Feed the Children's annual We Day event with Joe Jonas. But The Vampire Diaries star didn't just smile and look pretty for the cameras; she also presented her original design for a t-shirt whose proceeds will go to feed 6,500 kids currently attending school in Kenya. "No one should go hungry because, quite frankly, hunger bites," she told the screaming crowd in Toronto. "And I'm not just saying that because I'm on a vampire show." Earlier in the day, Nina's Vampire Diaries co-star Ian Somerhalder sent his well wishes for Nina on her big day: "Break a leg Nina!" Ian tweeted. The actor's traditional good-luck phrase, "Break a leg," might have been taken too literally by 23-year-old dancer Graham Keen back in March. He was auditioning to be part of the dance ensemble for NETworks' national touring production of "Young Frankenstein" after seeing the casting notice on BackStage.com."They were looking for tall dancers, and I'm 6-foot-2," he says, "so it was a good match for me." Keen, an Actors' Equity membership candidate who has been dancing since age 7 and began his professional career in college, admits that this particular audition "was an uphill battle all the way." During the first tap combination, his shoe started to fall apart. Once that problem was solved, an even bigger one presented itself: At the end of a ballet combination, Keen landed the wrong way, fracturing the fifth metatarsal in his left foot."I don't know exactly how it happened," he says, "but I have.

"Leap Year," a well-wrought online comedy with ties to the viral sitcom hit "Break a Leg," concludes its ten-episode run Monday. But please don't let that stop you from checking out the show retroactively. The scripted episodes, which are posted on YouTube and also run on Hulu, concern five friends competing in a $500,000 contest to fund a promising start-up. "Leap Year" was financed by Hiscox Small Business Insurance to promote its direct and online coverage products, but even those who are cynical about such matters should laugh at the show. Well,...

Last night my girlfriend Kay and I saw Marisa Tomei in the revival of Wallace Shawn's 1979 play Marie and Bruce. (I'll tell you a bit more about it and how it compares to that very underseen Julianne Moore film in next week's theater column). As you walk into the theater, before the show starts, Marisa and co-star Frank Whaley are already on the stage, tossing and turning in bed.
Marisa aka Marie is obviously Not sleeping. In fact, she's chain smoking in between fights with the blankets and jabs at her snoring husband. Two older women walk past me.
Elderly Woman #1: ... [unintelligible] My Cousin Vinny.
Elderly Woman #2: That must be so frustrating, to win the Oscar your first time in a movie and then... nothing!
UHHnnnhh. So I say...

In theater, the show must go on. But the previews typically stop at some point. For "Spider-Man: Turn off the Dark" -- a.k.a. "Spider-Man: The Musical," a.k.a. "Spider-Man: In Retrospect, Maybe We Should Have Used Safety Nets" -- that point has come and gone at least three times already. A December 21 opening became a January 11 opening became a February 7 opening became a March 15 opening. Producers claim this will be final opening date. Uh huh. People used to claim bloodletting was a cure for pneumonia, too.
Speaking of bloodletting, many theater critics decided enough was enough with the delays and published their "Spider-Man" reviews last night in conjunction with the most recent missed opening. This, in turn, prompted public frustration from the show's producing team. Associated Press quotes Rick Miramontez, a Spider-(spokes)Man saying:
"This pile-on by the critics is a huge disappointment... changes are still...

Kellie Martin just might be one of Hollywood’s most down-to-earth moms.
The 35-year-old — best known for her work in Life Goes On and ER — has quietly raised 4-year-old daughter Margaret Heather somewhat out of the spotlight, with the help of husband Keith Christian.
But the actress is once again taking center stage, appearing Saturday night at 9 p.m. Et in the made-for-tv movie, Smooch, and working on her latest project, a children’s lifestyle company called Entertaining Elephants.
We recently spoke to Martin about her busy work life — and Maggie’s latest milestones.
What is Maggie up to these days?...

The Spider-Man musical punchlines have not yet subsided, and I doubt they will before 2010 ends at this rate. "Break a leg" references and Green Goblin involvement behind the scenes have been the most popular choices today.
Also trending today was Lindsay Lohan after a Betty Ford Center employee accused the actress of battery and was subsequently fired for sharing confidential information with the press. Scope out some reactions after the jump, along with an update on what Russell Brand did with his new 3-D TV.

It seems DreamWorks hasn't found just the right boy for a role in the Chris Pine-starrer Welcome to People. Director Alex Kurtzman (part of the Kurtzman-Roberto Orci writing team behind Star Trek and the Transformers movies) is holding an open casting call in Los Angeles on Saturday to find a 12-year old boy who is "athletic, independent and confident." Assumably, the boy has to look somewhat like he could be the child of Elizabeth Banks since she'll play his mother.
The role is the third lead in the film behind Pine (Unstoppable) and Banks (The Next Three Days, Imagine That). The story is about a guy (Pine) who discovers at his father's funeral that he has an older sister (Banks) and young nephew he never knew about when he's directed to deliver them $100,000 -- something he'd rather not do. The film is striving for a PG-13 rating and...

This coming spring, Chris Rock will make his Broadway debut in "The Motherf**ker With the Hat" -- and judging by the title, this play seems right up Rock's alley. The dark comedy revolves around a couple whose relationship hits the rocks when one decides to go sober while the other remains hooked on drugs and alcohol. Rock will play an Alcoholics Anonymous sponsor in the ensemble cast. Hey, if Chris Rock can't straighten you out, you're in trouble. The play opens on April 11. Break a leg, Chris!
