Story Summary:
Xeno, Christine, and Bivak spend their days and nights together in dimly lit rooms cast in the glow of shadows by their computer monitors. The subculture of LAN Parties, IM'ing and hacking confuse Xeno's parents as to why their son spends so much time behind the screen with his friends.
The friends rally around Christine as it is discovered she has cancer. Christine's cancer goes into remission as the friends make a pact one night at a LAN Party. Convinced she'll be the first to go, Christine and the others make a promise that whoever dies first in the group will have the others place a webcam in their coffin so the world can watch their corpse.
Tragedy Strikes the group when Xeno is hit by a car one day while crossing the street. Depresssed over the loss of her friend, Christine shows the videotape of the pact they made to Xeno's parents to place a coffin in the webcam. Xeno's parents are horrified at the idea and refuse to go through with it.
Bivak and Christine sneak into the graveyard at night, tap electricity off a nearby lamp post and leave a webcam and laptop in Xeno's coffin. The website with his corpse (temperature can be regulated by website visiotrs) attracts millions of visitors
My opinion:
An interesting look at the teenagers who have grown so accustomed to technology in their lives that putting a web cam in their coffin seems natural. While Xeno's parents deplore this idea, the kids seem perfectly ok with it. The millions of hits on the website of Xeno's coffin seem to suggest the kid's may be right - maybe the world really does want to watch.
An interesting film with a strange premise that makes you question the ethics of when "reality TV" is too real. Doesn't suffer from the usual hacker-movie clichés and the kids are represented as normal teenagers and not some war dialing, techno-music listening, hipsters like in Hackers or other films
The film contains Fine acting by Josefien Hendriks and Egbert Jan Weeber . I'd like to see them in some better written roles. The actress playing Xeno's mother seems to be a little over the top...
An enjoyable short film recommended for the cyberpunk crowd.
