The Missing Person: Michael Shannon

It is not a stretch to say that every movie could use the exceptional and eccentric presence of Michael Shannon, a reliably hypnotic actor (Before the Devil Knows You're Dead, Bug, Shotgun Stories) who's probably best known for his Oscar-nominated performance in last year's Revolutionary Road.
Happily, Noah Buschel's smart little neo-noir The Missing Person, which premiered at the 2009 Sundance Film Festival, is anchored by the lurching, physically imposing presence of Shannon as alcoholic detective John Rosow. A man out of time in a natty suit, Chicago vowels yowling all over the place, Rosow is sent to a yellowed-out California (evoking Elliott Gould in The Long Goodbye) in search of a missing person, a man who disappeared after the 2001 attacks on the World Trade Center.
While Buschel's film has an air of neo-noir cool that fits comfortably alongside Rian Johnson's Brick and HBO's Bored to Death, it's an

Ethan Hawke may not be as popular as Leonardo DiCaprio or even Jude Law, but there was a time when his name appeared first in billing followed by Law - that's in Gattaca of course! I can still remember the young actor when he played opposite Robin Williams and Robert Sean Leonard in Dead Poets' Society and who can forget Hawke and Julie Delpy in Before Sunrise and Before Sunset? Oh, how about Reality Bites? I could go on and on, but before I forget - two awesome films - Before the Devil Knows You're Dead and Training Day.
Now, of all characters, he's playing a vampire! Can he bring some kind of 'wonderful' for the beloved (and infamous) fictional character?

That's right, one Phoebe Cates, star of Gremlins has topped Mr Skin's online poll for the Top Ten Movie Nudes of all time. The list actually goes all of the way up to 100, but Cates made the top spot for her turn coming out of a bikini for Fast Times At Ridgemont High.
Angelina Jolie made the top three, coming in at two for scenes from the film Gia, as did Sharon Stone, whose turn in the classic Basic Instinct made the number two position.
For the full list of 100, click on through to Mr. Skin. Here's the top ten in full.
1. Phoebe Cates in Fast Times at Ridgemont High

5. Marisa Tomei in Before the Devil Knows You're Dead

Cinematical Rewind: Actors Who Could Play Siblings

(Cinematical Rewind is a new column that showcases some of our favorite posts from the past few years. Here's Jeffrey M. Anderson's famous Cinematical Seven from 7/22/08)
Occasionally Hollywood cobbles together random members of the A-list to play family members on film, even if their genes obviously come from opposite ends of the earth. If the actors are good enough or if the chemistry is there, sometimes the combo can work, such as Ethan Hawke and Philip Seymour Hoffman as brothers in Before the Devil Knows You're Dead or Colin Farrell and Ewan McGregor in Cassandra's Dream. Other times, it stretches credibility, such as Adrien Brody, Owen Wilson and Jason Schwartzman in The Darjeeling Limited. My all-time favorite oddball casting is in Sidney Lumet's Family Business (1989), with Sean Connery, Dustin Hoffman and Matthew Broderick playing grandfather, father and son. (Huh?) At the same time, there are actor combos out there

Yesterday came the yearly announcement from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences as it extended 134 invitations to several artists and executives "who have distinguished themselves by their contributions to theatrical motion pictures" read the press release. Of course all of them can decline, but I wouldn't necessarily expect that to happen as all who accept the invitation will be the only additions in 2009 to the Academy's roster of voting members.
"These filmmakers have, over the course of their careers, captured the imagination of audiences around the world," said Academy President Sid Ganis. "It's this kind of talent and creativity that make up the Academy, and I welcome each of them to our ranks."
The list follows below and reading around the best analysis I saw of it came from Nathaniel Rogers at The Film Experience who, among other things, pointed out the addition of longtime Darren Aronofsky's

Ah Grease, the great unifier. Everyone has seen it. I'm so glad there hasn't been a Grease 3 or a Grease Reborn... yet. I know they've threatened us with remakes in the past. Why bother? Shan't ever top Olivia + Travolta + Channing's "Rizzo". Sigh
Here's a possibly worthwhile event at Lincoln Center in July should you be in NYC. It's a movie discussion with multiple Oscar nominee Sidney Lumet (Network, The Verdict, Before the Devil Knows You're Dead) and his daughter screenwriter Jenny Lumet (Rachel Getting Married).

Noyce to Return to South Africa with 'Mixed Blood'

- For those keeping track, the Phillip Noyce name often gets attached to the next project “scheduled to begin principal photography”. I'm not sure if its a string of bad luck or just a case of the trades throwing in the Australian native's name into a headline. While we can probably cross off the likes of Dirt Music, American Pastoral, Mary Queen of Scots, it now appears that Noyce will follow up Salt with a thriller working from yet again a novel and with Before the Devil Knows You're Dead's Kelly Masterson who has been hired to write the screenplay. Noyce who filmed Catch A Fire in South Africa, will probably be returning with Mixed Blood. Roger Smith's novel details the story of an American named Jack Burn, hiding out in Cape Town, South Africa, after being blackmailed into a bank heist back home, is building a new

Phillip Noyce. Thriller. Disaster Zondi.
You could say that this news had me excited at the word 'Zondi,' even though I have no idea what it means. So for your sake and my own, some clarification: Phillip Noyce, the man who directed Clear and Present Danger, Patriot Games, The Bone Collector, The Saint, and Catch a Fire (and the forthcoming Salt) has been tapped to direct a thriller (that one was easy) that involves an American fugitive who struggles to protect himself and family against the world of corruption and killing in South Africa. Oh, and there's a character played by Samuel L. Jackson named Disaster Zondi.
If you heard a record needle just scratch, either your annoying roommate thinks it's cool to collect vinyl or your brain has the correct natural response to hearing that Sam Jackson got cast in something.
Jokes aside, it turns out that 'Zondi' is a common last name and that
