At $500m, James Cameron's Avatar is the most expensive movie ever. Yet for all its brilliant imagery, is it any more than a smug sermon?

Before I read that James Cameron was born 55 years ago in Kapuskasing, Ontario, the only thing I knew about the town was that when, during their 1951 tour of Canada, Princess Elizabeth and Prince Philip stopped there for an hour, they were greeted by a banner headline in the local paper reading "Kapuskasing by no mere fluke, welcomes the Princess and the Duke".

He got his first film job in 1980 as art director on Roger Corman's low-budget Sf film Battle Beyond the Stars, a transposition to outer space of The Magnificent Seven. It was scripted by John Sayles, who was to remain an independent film-maker of personal, modestly financed movies, while Cameron was soon to make exponentially expensive blockbusters.

His seventh feature, Titanic, is »

Like, Oh My God! It's The Gnarly New Hot Tub Time Machine Trailer.

16 December 2009 1:45 PM, PST | LatinoReview | See recent LatinoReview news »

John Cusack, Rob Cordy, Clark Duke (really? Clark Duke?) and Craig Robinson are four friends looking to spice up their boring party scene. They spice it up all right when a night of drinking in a time machine sends them back to the 80's. The time machine? Not a cool DeLorean, but a hot tub. If I were to go back in time to the 80's the first thing I'd do is kill everyone who I know who screw me over, that way I don't have to deal with them. Then I'd copyright and invent Yahoo, Facebook, MySpace and Twitter. After that, I'd try to buy up that small Pixar company and then invest in stock that I know will blow up in the future. I'd also try to father at least 500 children so I could start my plan of family global domination. I'd also kill the Hiltons so they »

Guy Pearce Joins Nicolas Cage And January Jones In 'The Hungry Rabbit Jumps'

30 November 2009 1:30 PM, PST | MTV Movies Blog | See recent MTV Movies Blog news »

Shh — be very, very quiet. Guy Pearce is hunting wabbits. Or jumping for them, at least.

Pearce, the actor behind such hits as "The Proposition" — not to be confused with the Sandra Bullock and Ryan Reynolds rom-com "The Proposal" — and "The Time Machine" — which is, sadly, the atrocity you're thinking of — has joined the cast of "The Hungry Rabbit Jumps," the thriller starring Nicolas Cage and January Jones of "Mad Men" fame. Roger Donaldson is the director.

Variety reports on the casting news but neglects to mention the specific role that Pearce has in the film. Given the premise of the movie and Pearce's talents, however, it's likely — not definite, but more than possible — that he'll play one of the movie's multiple antagonists.

In October, MTV News spoke with James D. Stern, one of the film's producers. He described "The Hungry Rabbit Jumps" as a vigilante-centric thriller.

Darwin at the movies: A festival of apes, aliens and troglodytes

20 November 2009 12:05 PM, PST | The Guardian - Film News | See recent The Guardian - Film News news »

Would we have had Alien, Planet of the Apes and The Time Machine if it weren't for a certain bearded Victorian?

Darwin, Evolution and the Movies is a one-off festival of film and live comedy to celebrate the 150th anniversary of the publication of Darwin's On the Origin of Species on 24 November 1859.

Over this weekend the festival is running at three separate venues across London. Classic films you rarely get a chance to see on the big screen, such as 2001: A Space Odyssey and brand new shorts commissioned as part of Darwin200 make up this small but perfectly formed festival.

If Darwin had chickened out in 1859 and decided to put his dusty manuscript back in the drawer, allowing Alfred Russel Wallace to take the fame, and the flack, the genre of science fiction that we take for granted probably would not have evolved to become the seductive, cultural force that it is. »

"Mister Ed" And Beyond:an Interview With Alan Young

14 November 2009 7:44 AM, PST | Cinemaretro.com | See recent CinemaRetro news »

By Nick Thomas

Alan Young created some memorable characters over his long career in film and television. Co-starring with Rod Taylor, Young played David Filby in the classic sci-fi film of the 60s, The Time Machine. He also horsed around as Wilbur Post for six seasons in one of best-loved sitcoms ever, Mister Ed, and was the voice behind numerous cartoon characters such as the grumpy Scrooge McDuck.  Mr. Young is celebrating a milestone birthday- although he isn’t especially fond of talking about such traditional annual events. But when I spoke with him a few days ago, he was quite happy to chat about his long career.

Born in Northern England, Alan’s Scottish father soon moved the family to Edinburgh, then later to Canada when he was six. Bed-ridden for months at a time with asthma, Alan would listen to radio shows and write his own comedy routines. »

Venture Brothers Review: "Return to Malice"

9 November 2009 12:11 PM, PST | TVfanatic | See recent TVfanatic news »

This week's episode of The Venture Bros. wasn't as heavy on the laughs as the last couple weeks, but it came in extra strong on the character development.  And hey, how can you not love any episode that centers around the Monarch and his henchmen?

During the episode, Henchmen 21 kidnaps Hank and Dean, and immediately Sgt Hatred and Dr. Venture assume the Monarch is behind it.  They return to Hatred's old neighborhood, Malice, where they run into his ex-wife.  You can read all about it in our "Return to Malice" recap.

Now for some of our favorite parts of the episode:

Henchman 21's backstory from after 24's death to the present, only then releazing it was his cowardice that was responsible. Someone finally revealing why the Monarch is in charge... only he has enough hate We love the concept of Malice and are so glad to return to it! Hehe, »

Ex MacHina #45

Rating: 7.5

My favorite series of the last couple of years is beginning to wind down and I’m getting quite sad about it. This issue picks up where we left off with New York City Mayor Mitchell Hundred discussing the effects of the previous arc and how Village Voice reporter Suzanne Padilla may be on to the White Box.

Our Mayor who can talk and control machines created The White Box around his election night.  Padilla was convinced that it helped elect Hundred as Mayor.  What happened was the White Box went off and implanted itself in Padilla’s brain, in a similar manner that the device that gave Hundred his powers.

Writer sinks his teeth into The Passage

16 September 2009 8:04 AM, PDT | Corona's Coming Attractions | See recent Corona's Coming Attractions news »

One of the many possible directing and/or producing projects that director Ridley Scott has in creative orbit around him is The Passage, a horror tale that puts a different spin on the vampire mythos. It's taken Fox 2000 two years to get from purchasing the screen rights to Jordan Ainsley's book (the pseudonym of Justin Cronin) of the same name to hiring a screenwriter to start adapting the book into screenplay format but it's finally happened.

The man who was hired for the job is screenwriter John Logan. He's worked with Scott before on Gladiator, for which Scott was nominated for an Oscar for Best Directing and the picture won both Best Actor (Russell Crowe) and Best Picture honors. Logan's one of Hollywood's A-list writers and has a very impressive resume of past work including credits on Oliver Stone's Any Given Sunday, Martin Scorsese's The Aviator and Tim Burton's Sweeney Todd. »

Tscc's Lena Headey Joins the Cast of HBO's "Game of Thrones"

2 September 2009 6:43 AM, PDT | TVovermind.com | See recent TVovermind.com news »

Now that Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles is done (*sob*damn you, Fox!*sob*), former cast member Lena Headey is moving over to HBO's new series Game of Thrones.  I love any shows and movies that focus on royal families, so I'm already sold on this one.

Turns out that this show is actually based on a series of books by author George R. R. Martin (does he really need two Rs in his name?) called "A Song of Fire and Ice".  I have never heard of this series, which means that I will head over to Amazon and quickly purchase it.  Four of the seven books of the series have been released, with the first one entitled "A Game of Thrones".

Apparently, the books are set in the Seven Kingdoms of Westeros, which had emerged from civil war about 15 years prior to the start of the book.   The book »

Back to the Future named top time travel movie

19 August 2009 3:45 AM, PDT | Boxwish.com | See recent BoxWish news »

Nothing messes with your mind like the thought of time travel, especially when in the ever popular context of movies. It’s a subject which invites countless questions (would this have happened if that doesn’t? But how did he get here when he’s meant to be there? And so on and so on), and its introduction to a film plot can make what was previously easily understood into a mess of miscomprehension, reducing even the smartest among us into clueless schmucks. Help! We don’t remember the problems of closed timelike curves cropping up in our school physics lessons. But the riddle still continues to enthrall film audiences and LOVEFiLM has conducted a survey into the UK’s favourite time travel flick with seminal 80s classic Back to the Future coming out on top with an impressive 40 per cent. 'Star Trek' vs. 'Lost': Competing time-travel theories

15 August 2009 6:00 AM, PDT | EW.com - PopWatch | See recent EW.com - PopWatch news »

Warning! The following essay -- the last lecture in our EW University course on time travel stories -- may induce a migraine. Students are advised to take some aspirin before reading. Getting stoned may also help, though this cannot be encouraged or condoned by the faculty. “Listen: Billy Pilgrim has come unstuck in time.” With those famous words in Slaughterhouse Five (1969), author Kurt Vonnegut introduced one of the most memorable time travelers and depictions of time travel that literature has ever given us. The premise: Billy Pilgrim has gone crazy from failing to grapple with the horror he experienced during World War II many, many years before. Unmoored from sanity, the haunted optometrist convinces himself he’s been abducted by aliens who believe that time is eternally present, that past and future are happening in the now -- Cubism made real. Pritam may be hot property in Bollywood, but he got there with a little .help. from other bands that he has generously .borrowed. from. Now his past is coming back to bite him as he has made his producer Vipul Shah wary, lest he lands the producer into legal tangles. As a safeguard, Vipul has made Pritam sign an indemnity clause for the music of his film Action Replay, starring Aishwarya Rai Bachchan and Akshay Kumar. This is virtually unheard of in an industry that is particularly lax about copyright infringement.Vipul Shah has become very cautious about derivative material in his films especially after his victory in court against Shree Venkatesh Films who have been accused of lifting material from Namastey London for a Bengali film, Poran Jai Joliya Re. Time travelers: We'll take (Dr.) Manhattan

"It took two years to make," retorted the Time Traveler. "Now I want you clearly to understand that this lever, being pressed over, sends the machine gliding into the future, and this other reverses the motion. The saddle represents the seat of the time traveler. Presently I am going to press the lever, and off the machine will go. It will vanish, pass into future time, and disappear. Have a good look at the thing. Look at the table, too, and satisfy yourself that there is no trickery. I don’t want to waste this model and then be told I am a quack!" -The Time Machine That’s the description of the first time machine to be called a time machine -- little more than a Victorian mechanical bull, although a pretty one, built of brass, quartz and ivory. EW U: Let's do the time warp again!

10 August 2009 8:00 AM, PDT | EW.com - PopWatch | See recent EW.com - PopWatch news »

Welcome to the first class of Jeff "Doc" Jensen's EW University course on time travel as a time-honored sci-fi trope. Coming up this week: additional posts that take a look at memorable movies and TV shows where this favorite conceit plays a starring role, plus a trivia quiz "final exam" and a gallery of our favorite time travelers. As you may have noticed from a summer filled with starcruisers, giant robots, and adamantium-boned mutants, the genre commonly (if imprecisely) called science-fiction is big business, invading and filling the culture's escapist landscape like tribbles, replicants, bunches of alien-hatching pods -- you get the idea.  This week's EW University course is devoted to one of the most popular sci-fi tropes: time travel. And there's been a lot if it lately. One of the year's biggest films, Jj Abrams' Star Trek, hinges on a time-travel plot twist. The forthcoming The Time Traveler's Wife »
