Second Poster for Christopher Nolan's 'Inception'

22 December 2009 3:38 AM, PST | GetTheBigPicture.net | See recent Get The Big Picture news »

I didn't love the first Inception poster, which looked way too much like the first Dark Knight poster (featuring Heath Ledger's Joker with his back turned to us, walking toward Gotham). The new one, seen below, reminded me of the opening credits to Panic Room, but I checked it out, and they're not terribly similar, after all. However, this is more like the trailer we've seen before, so there's so much-needed symmetry.

Apparently, this poster had to be unlocked, so to speak, from a new viral maze, loath as I am to the notion of cleverly manipulated "viral" campaigns. Anyway, a poster on the Nolan Fans message board who goes by the name apw claims he or she "found [the poster] by playing the game using a link to an already created maze." »

Best of the Decade #14: Zodiac (2007)

10 December 2009 6:23 AM, PST | FilmJunk | See recent FilmJunk news »

David Fincher's true crime masterpiece about a serial killer that terrorized Northern California throughout the late 60's and early 70's may very well be one of the best police procedural dramas of all time. Film Junk's Best of the Decade #14: Zodiac. Starring an incredible ensemble cast of Robert Downey Jr., Mark Ruffalo, Anthony Edwards, Jake Gyllenhaal and Chloe Sevigny, Fincher puts forth a film of immaculate detail and an endless investigation that became an obsession of many of San Francisco's media and law enforcement members. At a running time of almost three hours, Zodiac follows the steps of the reporters and beat cops through the investigative process. They try to figure out the randomness of the murders and why the killer sent confessions and cryptic clues to the newspapers. As the killer collects more victims, James Vanderbilt's screenplay becomes that much more riveting. Fincher films some death »

Armored Review

5 December 2009 1:21 PM, PST | newsinfilm.com | See recent newsinfilm news »

Armored is hardly a film about a heist, because the very connotation of the word suggests careful planning and execution.  When all the angles are covered, the con artists pull the perfect job.  Of course, in most of these movies, typically the operation is interrupted by unforeseen wrinkles, which set up twists that keep the plot from grinding to a halt.

The Nimród Antal-directed movie borrows from the conventions of the genre, right up to the point where it might have become interesting.  A diverse group of security guards conspire to rob their own armored trucks loaded with millions.  That’s about as far as the formula takes the team (and the screenwriter).

The ill-conceived plot establishes a desperate newbie named Ty (Columbus Short) struggling to pay the bills and support his sibling, Jimmy (Andre Jamal Kinney), a street-tough truant with a talent for spray-paint art.  As if a »

The Naughts: The Actress of the '00s

4 December 2009 10:17 AM, PST | ifc.com | See recent IFC news »

If time is an avenger, then the Naughts have had it both ways with Nicole Kidman. In the span of a decade, Kidman was transformed from arm candy into an artist -- the rare movie star who made genuinely interesting choices -- eclipsing her ex-husband, Tom Cruise, who filed for divorce in 2000, with an Oscar win and the embrace, finally, of her peers on her own terms.

However, as the '00s limp to a close, Kidman seems to be succumbing to a personal vendetta against time: by manipulating her face into a mask -- a waxworks ideal of "Nicole Kidman" -- rather than continuing to deploy it as a functional instrument, an artist's tool, Kidman is taking perhaps the most surprising risk of her career: she has chosen to age into glacial iconicity. In this, she exemplifies a decade that treated actresses with ambivalence, waving all the flags of »

Review: Law Abiding Citizen - Stupid and nasty

3 December 2009 3:08 AM, PST | t5m.com | See recent t5m.com news »

If you’ve read any of my other reviews, you might have picked up that I quite like action films. If you haven’t, allow me to explain; I quite like action films. That is to say Die Hard is my favourite film of all time, and Crank is the best action film of recent years bar none. That doesn’t mean that I don’t have extensive tastes, it just means that my tolerance for terrible Hollywood tripe is pretty high*. I will actively seek out films that look like they are going to be so-bad-they’re-good. Which is why the Jamie Foxx/Gerard Butler vehicle Law Abiding Citizen appealed to me. The trailers made it look really awful, and one reviewer described it as the ‘ultimate popcorn movie’, whatever that means. I was prepared for my thumbs to be thoroughly erect in appreciation. Sadly Law Abiding Citizen falls at the first hurdle, »

Decade in Review: 2002 Top Ten

2 December 2009 7:58 PM, PST | FilmExperience | See recent FilmExperience news »

As with 2000 and 2001, I'm reprinting my original top ten lists and commentary. If I've got something new to say, it'll be in red below.

Please note: This list was based on NYC release dates in the year 2002. Some movies are listed as different years at the IMDb based on when they were produced or released in their home country or in La or whatnot.

Undervalued: Morvern Callar, Roger Dodger, About a Boy, White Oleander, Panic Room and Kissing Jessica Stein Top 10 Runners Up: Chicago, Monsoon Wedding, Punch Drunk Love and Spirited Away I still am glad I championed most of these movies though I am sad that some of them aren't in the top ten... particularly Morvern, Monsoon and the Miyazaki. The MMMs. Though I'm not sure I'd know what to remove to make room for them.

10. 8 Women (François Ozon)

First Look: Kristen Stewart's New Indie Flick

24 November 2009 10:00 AM, PST | PEOPLE.com | See recent PEOPLE.com news »

Forget the supernatural: In Kristen Stewart's next project, the New Moon star is taking a deeply human turn, playing a troubled teenager in the indie flick The Yellow Handkerchief, due in theaters in February. Costarring William Hurt, Mario Bello and Eddie Redmayne, the movie explores the relationships between three strangers who embark on a road trip through post-Katrina Louisiana. Stewart plays Martine, a teen who hopes to escape her family, while Hurt plays Brett Hanson, a man who has to choose between his ex-wife (played by Bello) or what's next.Related: New Moon Mania: What's Next for the Cast? »

Kristen Stewart looks beyond Bella

18 November 2009 | AfterEllen.com | See recent AfterEllen.com news »

I admit that the standing-in-line-for-days furor around New Moon mystifies me. I mean please, this is not The Final Ever Until Lucas Gets Another Idea Star Wars movie.

I also admit that I am old and a bit of a snob.

But last week, a young bisexual friend of mine put it in perspective for me with two words: Kristen Stewart.

My friend explained to me that while she certainly is a huge fan of the Twilight franchise, she would go see Kristen Stewart in anything. She just can’t take her eyes off of her. And it dawned on me: Stewart is my friend’s Meryl Streep. And judging by the responses of AfterEllen.com readers at any mention of Stewart, not to mention Hot 100 status, she’s not alone.

I have followed Kristen since Panic Room. She was able to make an impression even sharing the screen with Jodie Foster — no easy task. »

Kristen Stewart Insists That Fame Is 'All Good' With Her

'I'm the luckiest person in the world,' the 'New Moon' star says.

Beverly Hills, California — Dating all the way back to names like Judy Garland, Mickey Rooney, Fatty Arbuckle, Shirley Temple and the Little Rascals, it seems like young overnight Hollywood sensations have been around for as long as Edward Cullen has been a vampire. Some have navigated the choppy waters of fame and gone on to great careers (Jodie Foster, Johnny Depp), while others (Jan-Michael Vincent, Lindsay Lohan) haven't been so lucky.

In the past year, names like Robert Pattinson, Kristen Stewart and Taylor Lautner have been splashed across supermarket tabloids, "hot" lists and paparazzi-stalking itineraries. But when we recently caught up with Stewart to discuss the stars' upcoming return in "New Moon," she insisted that A-level fame isn't really as bad as it's sometimes made out to be. »

Kristen Stewart Says 'New Moon' Was 'Labor-Intensive'

Beverly Hills, California — Asking fans to name the best "Twilight Saga" actor inevitably results in a debate only slightly less passionate than the topic of whether "Breaking Dawn" was a worthy finale for the novels. No matter who your pick is, however, it's hard to deny that at the tender age of 19, Kristen Stewart has positioned herself to become a dominant Hollywood actress for decades to come.

With more than 20 movies under her belt, acclaim in such wide-ranging flicks as "Into the Wild," "Panic Room" and "Adventureland," and praise from the likes of Jodie Foster and Ryan Reynolds, KStew is undoubtedly an actress to watch.

But according to her, it was next week's "New Moon" that demanded some of the most difficult work yet in her young career. »

David Koepp to Direct Bike Messenger Action Film Premium Rush

11 November 2009 9:06 PM, PST | Slash Film | See recent Slash Film news »

David Koepp is best known as one of Hollywood's highest paid screenwriters (and one of Spielberg's scribes). His screenwriting credits include everything from Toy Soldiers, Jurassic Park, and Carlito's Way, to Panic Room, Spider-Man, War of the Worlds and Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. For the last decade he's been trying to make the transition into feature film directing. He made his debut with the promising Stir of Echoes, but has since followed up with some lackluster efforts, the 2004 Stephen King adaptation Secret Window and the 2008 Ricky Gervais supernatural romantic comedy Ghost Town. Honestly, I think Koepp is a much better screenwriter than he is a filmmaker, and that's not saying much considering the abundance of lackluster screenplays he's been involved with in the last 10-12 years. With that kind of intro, you must be really interested in his next directorial effort (yes, that was »

‘Se7en’ Writer and Director Reunite For ‘Peter Proud’

9 November 2009 10:53 AM, PST | ScreenRant.com | See recent Screen Rant news »

Back in 1995, director David Fincher and screenwriter Andrew Kevin Walker (The Wolfman) collaborated on what is now touted as a “crime classic” and “a blueprint for modern serial killer movies.” That movie was Se7en, and I totally agree with all the praise that’s been heaped upon it (it recently featured in our “Horror Plus” series).

Now, 14 years later, Fincher and Walker are going to be collaborating once more, this time on an adaptation of the novel The Reincarnation of Peter Proud for Columbia. THR’s Heat Vision Blog reports the news of their involvement, along with producer Michael De Luca (Blade, Ghost Rider). The author of the book, Max Ehrlich, adapted it into a movie in 1975 of the same name, so I guess in a way this movie is a remake by Fincher (there’s that “remake or new adaptation” question again). According to THR:

'New Moon's' Kristen Stewart admits she's at peace with superstardom

9 November 2009 10:50 AM, PST | Hitfix | See recent Hitfix news »

If anyone seems to have taken being under the "Twilight" microscope the hardest it's Kristen Stewart.  The teenage actress who'd first come to moviegoers attention in David Fincher's "Panic Room" had been on something of an indie movie tear before being cast as the iconic Bella in Catherine Hardwicke's big screen adaptation of "Twilight."  From the cast's first Comic-Con appearance to the surprise blockbuster's premiere Stewart seemed overwhelmed by all the media attention and intense fan frenzy.  And considering that she'd been around the business for as long as she had it was a bit surprising.  Well get ready, because that's »

Beverly Hills, California — Rob and Kristen are engaged. They're going to name their first child a combination of their mothers' names, just like in the "Twilight" books. A big wedding is on the way, quite likely with Bigfoot officiating.

As their fame has grown, so has the insanity level of the rumors about their personal lives. On Friday (November 6), "New Moon" star Robert Pattinson sat down with MTV News, and was eager to address one of the more notable bits of news he saw the last time he Googled himself.

"I like the story about me being pregnant," laughed the 23-year-old British heartthrob. "It was in some Australian magazine, on the front page!"

As they've filmed "New Moon" and "Eclipse," Rob and Kristen Stewart have spent the last »

Angelina Jolie Is Not Kristen Stewart's Model For Success... So Who Is?

4 November 2009 7:30 AM, PST | MTV Movies Blog | See recent MTV Movies Blog news »

From Hollywood Crush: So apparently "Twilight" star Kristen Stewart doesn't want to be like a certain Oscar-winning Un ambassador who has given birth to Brad Pitt's children. "I don't want to be a movie star like Angelina Jolie," KStew told the British magazine Fabulous.

If you ask me, Angelina has a pretty darn impressive personal and professional resume — one nearly any human being on earth would kill to possess — but, hey, who am I to question Kristen's dreams and nightmares? I've admired her gritty acting talents since 2002's "Panic Room," and with "New Moon" coming up in a matter of weeks, her career is only on the rise. But if she doesn't want to model her career after Angie, who should she aspire to be? And, almost as important, whose Hollywood fate should she do everything she can to avoid?

Kristen Stewart: 'I Don't Want to Be Like Angelina Jolie'

1 November 2009 8:47 PM, PST | Aceshowbiz | See recent Aceshowbiz news »

Kristen Stewart just can't stop complaining about her fame, which as she has said for several times intrudes her private life. "I don't want to be a movie star like Angelina Jolie", she tells Fabulous. "Nothing about being a celebrity is desirable. I'm an actor. It's bizarre to me that everybody's so obsessive."

The depicter of Bella Swan in "Twilight" goes on comparing the vampire film's leading character Edward Cullen, which is played by Robert Pattinson, to the concept of celebrity. "Edward is actually a really good parallel to fame. As a vampire he has a sad, desolate life - fame is the same," she explains.

Claiming her fame after starring in 2002 flick "Panic Room", Kristen Stewart becomes more famous after her film "Twilight" was released last year. It was since that time she receives more media attention and always followed by a throng of paparazzi wherever she goes.

Can't we judge someone who is a celebrity and an actress, and treat her as one and the same? She's just one person right?

Megan Fox may be overrated as a "celebrity," but she is actually underrated, As An Actress.

She gets a ridiculously inordinate amount of criticism for her acting because the part of her career that made her famous was a part that focused on how attractive she was, not anything that could actually showcase any acting skills, »
