After taking the stage in a housedress and, at one point, swinging his cane like a baseball bat at a Massachusetts holiday weekend screening of Jaws, Richard Dreyfuss went on to deliver a rant described by attendees as transphobic, sexist and homophobic.
“This was disgusting,” posted one attendee on the Facebook page of The Cabot theater in Beverly, Massachusetts. “How could the Cabot not have vetted his act better. Apparently (I found out too late), he has a reputation for spewing this kind of racist, homophobic, misogynistic bullcrap.”
The incident occurred on Saturday night prior to the film screening. In a brief YouTube video taken by an audience member, Dreyfuss can be seen walking onto the stage for a Q&a wearing a floral print dress and shaking his hips in a mocking way.

A Massachusetts theater is apologizing to its patrons who came to attend a screening of Jaws with star Richard Dreyfuss but instead were subjected to alleged sexist and homophobic comments from the actor over Memorial Day weekend.
Attendees who headed Saturday to The Cabot theater in Beverly, Massachusetts, for what was billed as “An Evening With Richard Dreyfuss + Jaws Screening” were likely anticipating some amusing or insightful anecdotes from the actor about filming the classic Steven Spielberg action blockbuster.
Instead, the Oscar winner went on a freeform rant that, according to social media posts from those in attendance, began while he was speaking about Barbra Streisand and moved into his bigoted perspective on trans youth, the Academy Awards’ inclusion rules and then on to trans kids affirming their gender.
Following the event, attendees quickly took to social media to criticize the actor’s remarks, with some saying they even walked out during the event.

Four decades after his death, the infamous Truman Capote continues to dominate pop culture through the second season of Ryan Murphy’s anthology series Feud, titled Capote vs. The Swans. The show chronicles Capote’s falling-out with his socialite inner circle as well as his self-destructive spiral.
A pivotal moment of that spiral occurred during an intoxicated interview on the July 18, 1978 episode of The Stanley Siegel Show, which the series recreates in its penultimate episode. That single appearance eclipsed nearly a decade in which Capote was one of the most in-demand guests on talk shows, including The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson, The Dick Cavett Show, and Firing Line. During this time, Capote and the talk show format that erupted in the 1960s and 1970s had a symbiotic relationship fed by one’s ability to tell stories and the other’s ability to reach a vast audience.

In an interview on PBS‘ Firing Line with Margaret Hoover, Richard Dreyfuss has slammed new diversity and inclusion requirements for next year’s Oscars and said the rules “make me vomit.” The veteran actor went on to comment, “Because this is an art form. It’s also a form of commerce, and it makes money. But it’s an art. And no one should be telling me as an artist that I have to give in to the latest, most current idea of what morality is.” He was responding to inclusion requirements, which went into effect in 2020, requiring nominees for Best Picture to include “on-screen representation, themes, and narratives; creative leadership and project team; industry access and opportunities; and audience development,” according to the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences. One of three of these requirements must be met, said the Academy. At least one actor from an underrepresented...

Now 75, Richard Dreyfuss has turned into pretty much what you’d expect: curt, cranky and direct…and we love him for it! Now, he has targeted the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, the same organization that made him the youngest Best Actor winner at the time.
In a recent interview on PBS’ Firing Line with Margaret Hoover, Richard Dreyfuss blasted the Academy’s inclusion rules…and he wasn’t holding back. “It’s an art. No one should be telling me as an artist that I have to give in to the latest, most current idea of what morality is. What are we risking? Are we really risking hurting people’s feelings? You can’t legislate that…You have to let life be life. I’m sorry, I don’t think there is a minority or majority in the country that has to be catered to like that.

Richard Dreyfuss criticized the Academy Awards’ new representation and inclusion standards for Best Picture nominees going into effect in 2024 during an interview on Friday for PBS’ Firing Line with Margaret Hoover.
“They make me vomit,” the Oscar winner said in response to Hoover’s query regarding the upcoming eligibility requirement. New York -- Robert Vaughn, the debonair, Oscar-nominated actor whose many film roles were eclipsed by his hugely popular turn in television’s The Man From U.N.C.L.E., has died. He was 83.
Vaughn died Friday morning after a brief battle with acute leukemia, according to his manager, Matthew Sullivan.
The Man From U.N.C.L.E. was an immediate hit, particularly with young people, when it debuted on NBC 1964. It was part of an avalanche of secret agent shows (I Spy, Mission: Impossible, Secret Agent), spoofs (Get Smart), books (The Spy Who Came in From the Cold) and even songs (Secret Agent Man) inspired by the James Bond films.
Vaughn’s urbane superspy Napoleon Solo teamed with Scottish actor David McCallum’s Illya Kuryakin, a soft-spoken, Russian-born agent.

What's so fun about the documentary "Best of Enemies," a hugely entertaining look back at the intense 60s rivalry between intellectuals William F. Buckley, Jr. and Gore Vidal, is how little the two 40ish men respect each other. What makes it so timely is there's nothing new about that. Straight conservative ("crypto-Nazi") Buckley, host of "Firing Line" and founder of The National Review, may have been smarter and less right wing than most of his contemporary counterparts, but he still underestimated Vidal, his well-prepared historian ("goddamn queer") Liberal opponent. They were so well-matched partly because they had much in common: patrician families and Eastern establishment educations as well as a rabid intellectual curiosity. They could both write and articulate. Their infamous 1968 television debate was prescient in more ways than one, as the film's co-director Morgan Neville points out. "This is a film about how we...

And it introduced the event at a press conference today by inviting boxing Mc Michael Buffer to stand in the middle of a mock ring and to deliver his catchphrase — “Let’s get ready to rumble!” — as he brought out what he called the “heavyweights on the right and the left.” They’ll square off in front of a live audience for the broadcast, which will be offered on Dish’s channel 102 and streamed online at www.facebook.com/Dish. It will promote Dish’s pickup yesterday of Beck’s TheBlaze online video content as well as Current TV,...

J. Edgar (Warner Bros.) Director Clint Eastwood provides a rock-solid, albeit rather flat portrait of polarizing FBI Director J. Edgar Hoover, covering his life from late teens to his death. Leonardo DiCaprio does an impressive turn as Hoover, never crossing the line into caricature, and creating a Hoover that is all too human, making for an all the more unsettling look at absolute power run amuck. Where the film stumbles is the love story at its core: Hoover’s relationship with longtime aide Clyde Tolson (Armie Hammer). In the hands of an openly-gay director like Gus Van Sant, this could have been a heartbreaking, tender story of forbidden (unrequited?) love, but Eastwood seems to tiptoe around their romance, with far too much delicacy and deference. The film works well when recreating the famous crimes and investigations which Hoover made his name on (the Lindbergh kidnapping,...

Chicago – Otto Preminger’s “Anatomy of a Murder” is a film that certainly still entertains modern audiences but should best be considered in light of when it came out in theaters. In 1959, courtroom dramas weren’t nearly as prevalent as they are in the era of “Law & Order” and discussions of rape and murder were not yet common in film. It may be hard for young audiences to believe but this spectacular film truly pushed the envelope of what could be done in a film like it and creatively succeeded in every way.
Rating: 5.0/5.0
Instead of going with the censorship that faced the movie (it was even banned in Chicago for some time), the country and the industry embraced “Anatomy of a Murder” and the movie was nominated for seven Oscars, including Picture, Adapted Screenplay, and Best Actor for James Stewart and Best Supporting Actor for George C. Scott (losing...

Every pundit that has tried to make a point, throw a punch, or declare victory should pause today to salute Christopher Hitchens.
He burst on the U.S. media scene first on William F. Buckley Jr.'s television series Firing Line, then on CNN's Larry King Live and Crossfire in the early Reagan Presidency. He (along with now presidential candidate Newt Gingrich) knew immediately that cable television was the new media play for serious public policy combat. The "disruptors," as our web friends say now. Hitchens didn't talk to the empty chairs each night on C-span as Gingrich did to make his points and show the American people that he was still at work, he just swung for the rafters with every comment on the only two cable shows.
Pat Buchanan, a great verbal brawler in his own right, is the only person I ever saw who could anticipate the blows.

It’s great to see Criterion give its stunning treatment to a classic James Stewart (It’s a Wonderful Life) murder mystery. Although 1959′s Anatomy of a Murder didn’t win any Academy Awards, it was nominated for seven: Best Picture, cinematography, adapted screenplay, editing, Best Actor for Stewart and two Best Supporting Actor awards for Arthur O’Connell (The Poseidon Adventure) and George C. Scott (Patton).
In the movie, Stewart plays a small-town lawyer who takes on the case of a young Army lieutenant (Ben Gazzara, The Thomas Crown Affair) accused of killing the local tavern owner, who he believes raped his wife (Lee Remick, The Omen).
Directed by the late Otto Preminger (Laura), Anatomy of a Murder was a groundbreaker when it was originally released for its frank discussion of sex. The film is based on the novel...
