Where The Wild Things Are

Where the Wild Things Are

Directed by: Spike Jonze

Cast: Max Records, James Gandolfini, Catherine O’Hara, Catherine Keener

Running Time:  1 hr 41 mins

Rating: PG

Release Date: October 16, 2009

Plot: The cinematic representation of Maurice Sendak’s popular children’s story about a young boy whose animalistic behavior forces him to run from his domestic problems and into a world of his own creation. Amongst a forest in a distant land, young Max befriends a slew of brutish animals who help him realize his way.

Who’S It For? Anyone who’s parents haven’t exposed them to this story may not been too keen to explore this story. However, director Spike Jonze’ adventurous ways with the camera may be enough to lure even causal fans of the book to the theaters.

Expectations: There was so much buzz about this film going in, it was difficult to make a bold prediction one way or the other. »

Hottest Work Hookups

9 October 2009 11:08 AM, PDT | Huffington Post | See recent Huffington Post news »

Whoever said work and romance don't mix hasn't read Us Weekly lately (or Forbes for that matter). Here, my picks for the hottest couples whose spark ignited on the job. #6: Julia Roberts and Danny Moder When Julia met cameraman Danny Moder on the set of The Mexican in 2000, we wondered just how far he was zooming in with that lens of his. The pair "nursed" each other through the breakups they were both going through, and a month after Moder's divorce was finalized, he and America's Sweetheart sealed the deal during a backyard barbecue. #5: Will and Jada When Jada Pinkett auditioned for the role of Will Smith's girlfriend on The Fresh Prince of Bel Air several years ago, producers turned her down because she was too short. Will, however, thought she was just right. Today the two are still chillin' out,... »

Protesters Shut Down Marquez Movie

7 October 2009 9:11 AM, PDT | WENN | See recent WENN news »

Campaigners are protesting against the movie adaptation of Gabriel Garcia Marquez's book Memories Of My Melancholy Whores - insisting the project condones child prostitution.

The Nobel-prize winning writer's tale of a 90 year old bachelor who enjoys a night of "wild love with an adolescent virgin" on his birthday was set to be transformed for the big screen in Mexico later this month.

But campaigners from the Regional Coalition Against Trafficking in Women and Girls in Latin America and the Caribbean have successfully managed to close down the shoot - after filing a criminal complaint at Mexico's Attorney General's office on Monday.

The Mexican state of Puebla's government has since confirmed it has pulled funding for the project, therefore shutting down filming in the area.

Campaigner Teresa Ulloa insists the book's topic would promote the child sex trade if it made it to cinemas: "As a book, it does not have access to the most vulnerable people in society. Once they make the movie, it will be in movie theatres and later it will surely be on television."

But the film's co-director and producer Ricardo del Rio insists a 21 year old actress had been cast in the film, and the storyline did not even touch upon the character's age.

He says, "They are censoring a film before it's been made, without knowing either the script or the vision of the director. Here they have simply killed our adaptation. They have dealt us a fatal blow because we can't film without all the resources."

The book was released in 2004, and was a hit with critics in Mexico. »

Does Anyone Like Julia Roberts?

23 March 2009 10:02 AM, PDT | Cinematical | See recent Cinematical news »

I have a confession to make: I like Julia Roberts.

Boy, it feels good to get that off my chest, even if admitting it makes me the kind of girl that the Guardian's Jeremy Kay sees as lining up for Duplicity to remember being as "touched [as] after watching Pretty Woman for the very first time." I've always found her appealing and rather funny -- enough to even rewatch The Mexican when it was on cable a few weeks ago. (Mary Reilly, however, will forever be a no go.)

But liking Roberts seems to be a shameful thing unless you're David Letterman. Every pre-Duplicity review and article I read was prefaced with a gleeful "I've never liked Julia Roberts!" Many seemed to be rooting for her "return" to fail so they wouldn't be faced with having to type her name again. Roberts doesn't even attract pure girl hate, as many »

Who's the Next Big Female Movie Star?

9 March 2009 2:15 AM, PDT | Rope of Silicon | See recent Rope Of Silicon news »

Julia Roberts has yet to be surpassed. Back in September of last year I asked Who's the Next Big Male Movie Star? At the time Robert Pattinson Fever had spread all over the Internet and the conversation resulted in a wasted experiment as commenters weren't able to have a real debate. However, a few people did ask for a similar feature for the females and I have finally gotten around to putting it together. With the males the name I was looking at in comparison was Will "Guaranteed Box-Office Gold" Smith. With the females I was unable to come up with a name that lives up to the career Julia Roberts put together and she remained my muse. When Pretty Woman came out in 1990 Julia was 22-years-old and had just starred in and won a Golden Globe for Steel Magnolias. Over the following nine years she worked her way into »
