A magical, fresh take on helping others
TheLittleSongbird8 January 2012
Warning: Spoilers
Respectfully I do disagree with the previous reviewer. As a big Winnie the Pooh fan, as with all the other Winnie the Pooh videos I loved Helping Others. I found it very magical and fresh, with everything to like about the series The New Adventures of Winnie the Pooh(four episodes of the show are featured here) and Winnie the Pooh evident.

"Owl's Well that Ends Well" is not only very funny but sticks to the theme of the video very well. The animation is beautiful, the music lively and the story simple and innocent, but other than Owl's intentionally-terrible singing, the writing was the star of this episode, my favourites being Tigger's "Don't touch that thing-a-ma-bobby there, and don't step on that doo-hickey over there, and whatever you do don't step on the whatever-it-is next to the I-forgot-what-to-call-it" and "state your name, rank and favourite type of breakfast cereal".

"A Very, Very Large Animal" always was one of my favourites. Of the four episodes on the video, with Piglet helping the ants when they needed it and them returning the favour, it is the most loyal to the theme of helping others. Alongside "Find Her, Keep Her", I always did find it very touching, with Piglet upset that he is so small and after his friends make him taller and it backfires he runs away. The scenes where he's talking to himself as he runs away and helps the ants in the process always did make me cry, and the moral being small doesn't make you worthless warms my heart. But there is always room for some funny moments, such as Pooh, Rabbit and Tigger planting the small trees and falling down the cliff after helping Piglet cross it and especially the sight of(an inflated?) Eeyore in a Piglet suit.

"Caws and Effect" sees Pooh trying to help Rabbit with his garden from the crows. Aside from the wonderful characters and great animation, as well as the fun story, what struck me as so good about this episode was the catchy music which I could still remember the beat ten or so years later and the writing. I often see Tigger with the best lines(and he does have a very amusing exchange with Rabbit when they get lost), but here Pooh steals the show, not just with "Caw...Bother" and "you're not crows, are you?" but with his adorable personality.

"To Dream the Impossible Scheme" is the funniest episode on the video for me. Once again the animation and music are great, but the joy of this episode is Grand Pappy(who is kind of reminiscent of Wylie Burp from Fieval Goes West) who is marvellously voiced by Jim Cummings, the fast-paced story that is littered with lots of fun and I liked that Gopher had more to do here and the droll dialogue. I have to admit though, the part where Gopher gets blocked with the shovel looks and sounds painful, but for some reason I laugh at it, maybe it is to do with the chaotic nature of the scene.

Overall, magical and fresh, I think if you love Winnie the Pooh you will love Helping Others. 10/10 Bethany Cox

Not as much fun as the Classics

I have watched this with my friend, and I still think that it is not as much fun as the originals. The story is sort of flat and boring, and all 4 of the short pieces are really not about learning. If you want to watch more enjoyable Pooh stories, they are the Honey Tree, the Blustery Day, Tigger too, and a Day for Eeyore. This did not recapture the original magic of the first four I listed, but my friend watches it and does not seem to mind or notice.
