The Best of the Decade: 2000-2009

12 hours ago | MovieWeb | See recent MovieWeb news »

A best of the decade list is an incredible thing to consider. The Aughts were ripe with imagination and originality. The past ten years also came jam packed with many new visionary directors that changed the cinematic landscape forever. Yet, at the same time, it was also a decade wrought with remakes, rip-offs, ten-year late sequels, and films based on preexisting toy properties, comic books, and amusement park rides. George Lucas offended almost everyone by dusting off his Star Wars mythos and adding copious amounts of CGI to it. And Batman, a caped figure in tights who last flourished in the trippy sixties, managed to crawl head and shoulders above the rest at the box office to be crowned king. Thus proving that the so-called "geek" or "fanboy" truly ruled the silver screen over the course of this tumultuous past decade. Today, we look at the ten films that ruled »

Tarantino on Superhero Films

5 December 2009 3:40 AM, PST | HeyUGuys.co.uk | See recent HeyUGuys news »

Anybody who remembers Clarence showing Alabama the first issue of Spider-Man in True Romance, recalls Bill explaining Superman’s critique on the human race to The Bride in Kill Bill Vol. 2, or was aware that the Silver Surfer argument in Crimson Tide is courtesy of an uncredited Quentin Tarantino rewrite, should know that Qt is somewhat of a comic book fan. Tarantino has now told MTV that Inglourious Basterds was heavily influenced by Marvel Comics’ Sgt. Fury and His Howling Commandos.

Aside from the one scene he directed in Sin City, I’ve often wondered why this great director has not taken the opportunity to direct a comic book based film in an era where superheroes have dominated the box office. There have been so many bad comic book films made by directors who do not appreciate the source material they are working from, that I would like to see »

The Last Airbender Trailer Delayed

3 December 2009 8:38 PM, PST | ScreenRant.com | See recent Screen Rant news »

M. Night Shyamalan’s adaptation of the hit cartoon series Avatar: The Last Airbender is one of my most anticipated films of 2010. The film, titled The Last Airbender to avoid confusion with a certain other movie coming out in two weeks, premiered a teaser trailer this summer but we’ve not seen anything major since.

The Last Airbender marks not only the largest-scale production for writer/director Shyamalan, but the first time he steps out from his trend of original work to direct an adaptation of an established and popular franchise. I for one, think this is fantastic for fans of the series and moviegoers alike.

In August, we heard from producer Frank Marshall that they were working on a trailer for Christmas, likely to be attached to Avatar or Sherlock Holmes but now comes news that it won’t be happening.

On Twitter (again), Marshall updated eager fans with »

Misfits Series one, episode one

13 November 2009 1:57 AM, PST | The Guardian - TV News | See recent The Guardian - TV News news »

Is it the British Heroes? Skins with superpowers? Time to sort out the caps from the capes for the first of our weekly roundups.

Spoiler Alert: This weekly blog is for anyone's who's seen the first episode of Misfits

So what have we got?

Six kids lined up for community service. Cheeky, on the phone, less than happy to be here. An opening monologue that could be something out of a Super Friends recruitment drive, or an inspirational be-all-you-can-be self-help group - until we get to the last line.

"This is it. This is your chance to do something positive. Give something back. You can help people. You can really make a difference to people's lives. That's what community service is all about."

They're put to work painting some benches until - Wham! - huge chunks of hail rain down, lightning strikes and they're all left feeling, well, a bit odd. »

'BioShock 2' Dev Talks Shyamalan-esque Plot Twists

30 October 2009 7:30 AM, PDT | MTV Multiplayer | See recent MTV Multiplayer news »

"BioShock 2" has a lot to live up to. It's the eagerly anticipated sequel to one of the most critically acclaimed titles of the past two years and it's those very expectations of fans that run at odds with the title's chances of critical (though maybe not commercial) success. Earlier this month I spoke with Ken McClendon, the lead designer on "BioShock 2," about this very issue. Just how does one go about creating a sequel with fan expectations set to such a high bar -- especially when one considers that it was a well-crafted plot twist that cemented the first title's success in the first place?

McClendon responds:

"It's an incredibly humbling endeavor. We often go back to the first game to check things for reference, and every time I do I know I'm really struck by how well put together everything in that game is, and how it's all pointing »

New York City & Philadelphia Go Head-To-Head In The World Series -- And In Cinema History!

28 October 2009 2:00 PM, PDT | MTV Movies Blog | See recent MTV Movies Blog news »

The New York Yankees and the Philadelphia Phillies aren't exactly the fiercest of rivals, but there is sure to be blood — or maybe just some home runs, botched calls and heated arguments with umpires — when the two baseball teams collide for Game 1 of the World Series this evening (so long as the rain stays away that is!).

As New Yorkers and Philadelphians prepare for battle, we got to wondering about some of the other rivalries already in place between the two cities — in motion picture form, that is. I'm not necessarily talking about fictional competitions between NYC and Philly, so much as stacking movies set in those cities against one another.

Through that framework, you'd be surprised at how many competing movies there are between the Empire and Keystone States — just hit the jump and see the head-to-head match-ups for yourself!

M. Night Shyamalan’s ‘Devil’ Headed for the Screen [Updated]

16 October 2009 8:48 AM, PDT | ScreenRant.com | See recent Screen Rant news »

[Update: We've now have a synopsis about the plot of Devil]

M. Night Shyamalan is one of those divisive directors in Hollywood - not because of politically controversial film topics like say Michael Moore, or over-the-top art house edge like Lars von Trier. He doesn’t even make it into the mainstream news media spouting off-hand remarks, or getting picked up while driving drunk, flinging anti-Semitic racial slurs. No, Shyamalan divides audiences into those that love his work and those that don’t because of his story telling; there’s no real fence-riding when it comes to his films.

Shyamalan’s next story, Devil, a horror-thriller, is being backed by Universal and directed by brothers John Erick Dowdle and Drew Dowdle (Quarantine) with actor Chris Messina (Julie and Julia) attached to star. Brian Nelson (30 Days of Night) wrote the script based on Shyamalan’s story, the details of which are being kept a tightly guarded secret. I’m not really sure »

Happy Belated 15th Anniversary 'Pulp Fiction'

16 October 2009 1:54 AM, PDT | Rope of Silicon | See recent Rope Of Silicon news »

(from left to right) Cast of Pulp Fiction with Bruce Willis, Quentin Tarantino, Uma Thurman, Samuel L. Jackson and John Travolta Pulp Fiction was released 15 years ago today (minus two days) and slowly but surely we have started to reconsider how we view the film. When it first came out, it was as close to a religious experience as you could get within the movie industry from all angles. It influenced a lot of less talented filmmakers to try and copy Quentin Tarantino's success. The results were mostly cringe-worthy. Why did I have to suffer through 2 Days in the Valley? Things to do in Denver When You're Dead? Thursday? Spun? Because Hollywood loves them a fad. Some imitations were much more vibrant and distinct (Go and Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels come to mind). But mostly, there was a lot of crap. Either way, it was a movie »

The Last Airbender Update: Shyamalan Currently Editing

9 October 2009 10:01 AM, PDT | ScreenRant.com | See recent Screen Rant news »

The last time we posted about M. Night Shyamalan’s upcoming cartoon-to-movie adaptation, The Last Airbender, producer Frank Marshall said that, “all is well in post [production]“ and that we would see a (full) trailer around Christmas. But according to one of the film’s stars, Aasif Mandvi, the Sixth Sense director is most likely, “pulling his hair out in the editing room.”

Of course, Andvi isn’t Shyamalan, so I’m sure it’s just his best guesstimate - plus, the actor says stressing out in the editing phase is part of the usual process. However, I imagine Andvi’s not that far off, since The Last Airbender is by far the biggest project Shyamalan has ever done as a director who is accustomed to smaller, more intimate films where subtle character interaction prevails over special effects and action (for example: one of the only fight scenes Shyamalan has ever »

In Profile: Bruce Willis

1 October 2009 4:22 AM, PDT | FilmShaft.com | See recent FilmShaft.com news »

Bruce Willis is not a bad actor. He just occasionally acts in bad movies. It’s not entirely his fault either. Shall we put it down to “bold choices” that didn’t work out? If in a charitable mood, sure. There has always been a touch of uncertainty about Willis. He does not appear to be a natural storyteller.

Let’s say acting is an egotistical, ridiculous career option for anybody. Consider it. Even before the lucrative potential is taken into account – pretending to be other people is rather odd. Actors take up a lifetime of lying and fantasying in some vainglorious search for truth (fame and wealth too, if we are being cynical). Is it completely stupid or brave? Actors as pathological liars or sociopaths is a salient thought.

The American studios created the film star and it destroys them. Maintaining a lifelong and popular career in such a fickle, »

Open Forum Friday: Is Bruce Willis Officially Washed Up?

25 September 2009 5:35 PM, PDT | FilmJunk | See recent FilmJunk news »

There once was a time when Bruce Willis was considered one of the biggest action stars in Hollywood, but like many other action stars, as he left his bread and butter behind (the Die Hard franchise), he began to lose some of his box office pull. After making some questionable career choices throughout the '90s, his age also began to play a factor, yet still he remained a big enough name to be considered for some high profile projects. To this day, he continues to carry a certain amount of clout, and yet I find myself forced to ask, what was the last truly good Bruce Willis movie? I liked Live Free or Die Hard more than many, but it hardly seems to have revitalized his career. Fortunately for Bruce, he has more acting talent than most of the muscle-bound male stars to come out of the '80s, »

Surrogates Review (Philip’s Take)

25 September 2009 8:30 AM, PDT | Atomic Popcorn | See recent Atomic Popcorn news »

There are certain things, rules if you will, that should adhere to all Bruce Willis action vehicles. The first being him mouthing off to any and every one who opposes his authority. The second is Willis being shot at eighty billion times, followed by him serving up the best kinds of ass-kicking (a.k.a. rule number three.) Die Hard established this quite well, and it was followed by three very awesome sequels that all kept to these rules. Even Armageddon, in all it’s super amazing badness, is able to stay within the confines of these rules, replacing the shooting with a giant asteroid flinging debris everywhere. Surrogates attempts to humanize Willis, taking everything one loves about the man and making it the exact opposite. As you might’ve guessed, the world is a much, much worse place because of this.

But that’s not the real reason why »

Tarantino Reveals His Top 20 Movies (Since Reservoir Dogs)

17 August 2009 9:46 AM, PDT | ScreenRant.com | See recent Screen Rant news »

With Inglourious Basterds opening in theaters everywhere this Friday, August 21st, it will mark Quentin Tarantino’s sixth movie (if you count the Kill Bills as one movie). Compared to some other directors that’s not that many movies - particularly considering the talent Tarantino has for both writing and directing.

Anyone who knows anything about Tarantino will know that he’s not only a filmmaker but a truly avid and well-versed film fan. He’s revealed his almost encyclopedic knowledge of movies on several occasions, including during TV, print and online interviews, to commentary tracks and film discussion documentaries (a notable example of the latter is the recent Not Quite Hollywood - wow, does he know his stuff). Many of Tarantino’s favorite films are obscure and older movies (Rio Bravo I believe is his favorite of all time) that many of us may not have seen or even heard of. »

Geek Crush: Happy Birthday, M. Night Shyamalan!

6 August 2009 5:00 AM, PDT | WeAreMovieGeeks.com | See recent WeAreMovieGeeks.com news »

This marks the 10 year anniversary of “I see dead people.” That prophetic sentence was first uttered on August 6, 1999 with the release of the phenomenon, The Sixth Sense, and the career of M. Night Shyamalan was truly born. Today is M. Night Shyamalan’s birthday and the 10th anniversary of The Sixth Sense. Manoj Nelliyattu Shyamalan was born on August 6, 1970 in Pondicherry, India and after his birth, his parents, both doctors, moved the family to the United States where Night and his sister, Veena, grew up in the suburbs of Philadelphia. Night graduated from Nyu film school and it was there that he made up the name “Night.” Shyamalan met his future wife, Bhavna Vaswani, a psychologist, in college. They married in 1993 and have two daughters.

Now while I realize that Night had previously directed Praying With Anger (in film school) and Wide Awake (1998), 1999’s The Sixth Sense is assuredly his first successful foray into Hollywood. »

Opening the Door to 'The Sixth Sense' 10 Years Later

6 August 2009 3:23 AM, PDT | Rope of Silicon | See recent Rope Of Silicon news »

Photo: Touchstone Home Entertainment Ten years ago I went to see The Sixth Sense at a midnight showing in Mizner Park. I heard it was a solid, creepy horror film with a "cool" ending. I remember the experience of watching it and leaving the theater with a Whoa, I just saw something feeling. It's the type of movie you can't wait to tell everyone else about. And the best thing: you could recommend it to virtually anyone. When I left, for example, Fight Club, I had a great movie high, but I knew I couldn't talk excitedly to everyone about it. Fight Club just isn't for everybody. The Sixth Sense was a completely different situation. I couldn't think of a single soul who wouldn't like it, and it was clear to me M. Night Shyamalan had tapped into something cosmic.

‘Batman 3’ Doubts, ‘Unbreakable 2’ Buzz & A Megan Fox Cameo: It’s The Back-Issue Bin!

26 June 2009 3:16 PM, PDT | MTV Splash Page | See recent MTV Splash Page news »

While this week ended on a somber note with the deaths of both Michael Jackson and Farrah Fawcett, there were a few positive notes in this week’s headlines.

But that doesn’t mean everything was rosy on the comic book movie front, though.

- In our top story of the week, Christian Bale expressed some doubt about the likelihood of seeing another Batman movie, depressing legions of Bat-fans everywhere.

- Even though other movie media outlets keep proclaiming that there’s no interest in another “Unbreakable” movie, M. Night Shyamalan’s comments regarding his interest in a sequel generated a lot of interest from readers, too — to the tune of our second most popular story of the week!

- Bad news, guys — Megan Fox will only have a cameo in “Jonah Hex.” However, she will still be wearing that outfit.

Shyamalan Making ‘The Last Airbender’ As It Should Be?

26 June 2009 11:39 AM, PDT | ScreenRant.com | See recent Screen Rant news »

IGN and a few other sites were invited to the set of The Last Airbender recently and reported back on some positive and interesting things they got to witness and talk about with the director of the film, M. Night Shyamalan.

Most important to note is how he’s seemingly doing the project just as we fans wanted it made – with respect to the source material and with care attention to details.

M. Night had this to say about the project:

“It felt like an important movie [to make]… The mythology [of the series] was so well thought out and has Buddism and martial arts and… it has the deeper issues at its core. It’s going to be a really fun summer movie, but underneath it [there is] a seriousness that talks about genocide and balance in the world and all the things that interest me that you’ve seen in other movies I’ve made. »

M Night Shyamalan Launches Official Website/Interactive Experience

23 June 2009 10:39 AM, PDT | Slash Film | See recent Slash Film news »

Director M Night Shyamalan has finally launched his official website. And as you might expect, its far from traditional. MNightShyamalan.com transports you into a dark mansion (possibly haunted) where you walk around and uncover clues which grant you access to rooms/locations from Shyamalan's film history. I know this probably sounds like one of those annoying flash sites, where you'd rather just have easy access to a menu. And yes, it is that, but Night makes it worth your time by providing some extremely honest thoughts about his past films. For example, in one hallway I replaced a shard of glass to a broken mirror on the wall and was transported to the kitchen from Unbreakable. You might be wondering, "Why the kitchen?" One of the clues I found in the room revealed that Night's favorite scene from the film is the kitchen scene where Bruce Willis' son »
