With many of the winners of the Academy Awards now looking set in stone, there’s one question that we still have to ask. How will returning host Jimmy Kimmel do on his fourth try? His previous gigs were in 2017, 2018 and last year. He’s always been great. But this year, he’ll be better than ever… if he decides to deliver the following Oscars monologue. Mr. Kimmel — here you go.
1. Good evening and welcome to the Academy Awards. Or as it’s known this year, the “OppenOscars.” That’s right. There are 10 films vying for Best Picture. One of them is “Oppenheimer.” The other nine are all “Poor Things.”
2. I’m Jimmy Kimmel, father of the atomic joke and your Oscars host. And good news. Best Actor nominee Cillian Murphy can assure you that there’s a “near zero” chance that I’ll bomb tonight. I can just hear Matt Damon’s melodramatic response.

Nia Long will play Katherine Jackson, the mother of Michael Jackson, in director Antoine Fuqua’s upcoming biographical drama about the King of Pop.
It’s been previously announced that Jackson’s nephew Jaafar Jackson will play the eponymous musician while Colman Domingo will portray the family’s patriarch, Joe Jackson.
“Nia has delivered iconic performances throughout her career,” Fuqua said in a statement. “I’ve been a fan for a long time because her characters stay with you. I’m excited to now work alongside her as she pours all of that into Katherine Jackson: a woman who was the glue, the rock, and the heart of the Jackson family during its best and its most turbulent times.”
“Michael” is expected to chronicle the singer’s complicated legacy. According to the logline, the story will portray a “brilliant yet complicated man” who became known as one of the greatest performers of all time.

We got The Mummy which gave us all the hot cast members we could ask for and still gives us memes, we got End of Days, Stigmata, Idle Hands, House on Haunted Hill, The Haunting, Stir of Echoes, and The Blair Witch Project. It was a year for surprising hits, shocking failures, and offbeat horror films. So many smaller budgets did so well. It’s not quite high-stakes poker and we certainly can’t envisage Christopher Nolan devising a scene where 007 battles it out with a super villain over a game of bingo, but that isn’t to say that the game isn’t suited to the silver screen – emphasis on the silver…

While it was one of the most popular games in the UK during the 1970s and 80s, the cultural significance of bingo varies according to where you are on the globe. In some countries, it was used largely as a teaching tool, and in others, it’s very much associated with certain types of players.
It is these stereotypes and tropes that are often played on when bingo is shown on the silver screen or portrayed in television shows. This has led to some of the best scenes from some of the best-known movies, including:
Cocoon
As a classic of its time, Cocoon followed the story of a retirement community that has been infiltrated by aliens that are giving the residents a new lease on life. The protagonists, Joe, Ben, and Arthur, are swimming in the pool one day when they come across alien lifeforms that harbour the power to rejuvenate themselves.

Well… I may have gotten a little over-zealous with my predictions! I had just seen Mission: Impossible- Dead Reckoning Part One and thought it was absolutely fantastic, couple that with the fact that it has been getting great reviews (including the 9/10 from our own Chris Bumbray), nearly completely sold out showings at my local theater and a solid A cinemascore from audiences, and I thought this one was going to hit higher in its opening weekend. Right now the 3-day for Dead Reckoning Part One is coming in around $53 million, making it the fourth highest 3-day in franchise history after Fallout (61.2 million), Rogue Nation ($55.5) and M:i-2 (57.8). It still has a chance to take down the 5-day record which currently sits with M:i-2 at $78.8 million, but Saturday numbers will have to hit harder for it to achieve that.

It’s often claimed that good things come in threes, but try telling that to anyone who sat through the Big Momma’s House trilogy. Film sequels, in essence, are nothing new in Hollywood—the very first sequel came back in 1916 with the silent film The Fall of a Nation, Thomas Dixon Jr.‘s follow-up to D. W. Griffith’s jaw-droppingly racist epic, Birth of a Nation.
However, the concept only became commonplace in the 1970s when a string of follow-ups to successful dramas made waves at the box office. The Godfather, Part II, Rocky II, and The French Connection II were among the first movies that helped usher in this new era of filmmaking. Today though, moviedom has expanded beyond even the sequel and into new territory where the word “franchise” is king. Buoyed in recent times by the dominance of comic book movies and an increasing appetite for nostalgia,...

Before deciding on comedy as his true calling, Martin Lawrence seriously considered a career as a professional boxer, even becoming a Golden Gloves contender. He credits that pugilistic discipline for equipping him with the resilience and tenacity necessary to survive in the entertainment industry.

Premiering on October 25, 1997, Under Wraps was the inaugural Disney Channel Original Movie. The cornerstone of the network’s programming proved to be as close to appointment viewing as it got for ‘90s kids, along with the likes of ABC’s Tgif and Nickelodeon’s Snick. Moreover, Under Wraps served as a gateway to horror for many millennials. Before the age of streaming, catching a mummy movie on the same channel where you watched Disney cartoons and Boy Meets World reruns could have been your first exposure to the macabre.
Disney attempted to recapture the magic with last year’s Under Wraps remake. The original movie was successful — and continues to hold up 25 years later — for several reasons; relatable kid leads, a great Halloween atmosphere, and a sense of humor chief among them. Director/co-writer Alex Zamm and co-writer William Robertson (Inspector Gadget 2) smartly maintained those elements for the new iteration.

Anthony Anderson’s Hollywood career has been consistently characterized by successful pivots, from scene-stealing comedic roles to searing dramatic turns to effervescent hosting duties and many disparate points in between. But even he couldn’t have predicted his latest foray into the unforeseen, as the first person to receive a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in the midst of a global pandemic.
“I was looking forward to the pomp and circumstance that surrounds anyone getting a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, because not just anyone can or will get that,” Anderson says.
The multi-hypenate hoped to celebrate with his family and closest friends in the typical high-profile public ceremony that usually accompanies the honor. But “unfortunately that type of event can’t happen because of what’s happening in the world right now.”
Rest assured, though, eventually he’ll bask directly in the glow of his personal landmark on Hollywood Boulevard.

Nia Long has long been a fixture in Hollywood, but the actor is still celebrating important firsts. With her latest film, “Fatal Affair,” Long steps into a new role, serving as an executive producer for the first time and starring in her first thriller.
“I was saying to myself months prior to reading the script, ‘Wow, it’s really crazy in all of these years being in the industry, I’ve never done a thriller,’” Long tells Variety, explaining how the project landed in her lap. “So, ultimately, I decided this was a great opportunity to ask for a producer credit, to be involved in the beginning, to help with casting, to have ideas about the script and Netflix was very supportive of that.”
And the experience was as empowering as she’d hoped. “For the first time in my career I felt heard,” she says. “I felt like I...

Jessica Rabbit kidnapped by Nazis. Costner rescuing Princess Diana. We look back at a few strange movie sequels that were never made…
The multi-million dollar success of any movie will inevitably leave Hollywood executives clamouring for a sequel. And while there are plenty of movies whose stories are open-ended enough to warrant a return to the creative well, there are many times when coming up with a follow-up idea requires all sorts of imaginative leaps. Just look at something like Alien: Resurrection, which had to come up an elaborate reason why Ripley had (spoiler alert) managed to survive a swan-dive into a lead foundry in Alien 3.
Which brings us to this list, which is devoted to a few of the weirder sequel ideas that never made it to the big screen. An E.T. sequel in which little Elliott gets tortured by aliens? Forrest Gump dancing with Princess Diana?...

Should there be a 'ground zero' of knowledge for movie criticism? And what makes a critic effective at their job?
When I sat down to watch It Follows for the first time at the start of last year, I had no idea what I was getting. I'm increasingly an avoider of trailers, and try as much as possible to see films cold. It doesn't always work, but in the case of It Follows, it very much did.
As I’ve written before, the film had a very primal effect on me, in that it had me backing further and further into my seat, genuinely unnerved and more than a little scared by what was happening on screen. I hadn't felt like that watching a film for a long time, and my eventual write-up reflected that. Aside from the subtexts of the movie, which I, in truth, only came to later,...

An actor's trademark is something that they bank on for a good portion of their career, so naturally it's one of the biggest decisions for a working thespian as to what will be theirs. Case in point: when it came time for Martin Lawrence to decide what he'd be best known for, he truly went to the dogs. Enjoy this supercut of Martin Lawrence's many barks: For the sake of you, the reading audience, we'll dispense with any sort of puns detailing how this latest supercut from the folks at Owenergy Studios is a "ruff" sit. What we will do though is marvel at the fact that since his performance in the Kid 'n' Play classic House Party, straight through to the era of the Big Momma's House movies, Lawrence has barked his way through decades in comedy. And with those decades of practice, he's gotten pretty good at it.

Morgan Freeman is attached to star in the spy action/comedy "Cold Warriors," which will tell the story of a retired CIA agent who teams up with his stepson, a computer programmer, to complete a Cold War era mission. Raja Gosnell ("Big Momma's House," "The Smurfs") will direct the movie for Millennium Entertainment. A search is underway for an actor to play the stepson to Freeman's stepfather, the former CIA agent. Freeman’s Revelations Entertainment production shingle is producing the film, along with Millennium’s Mark Gill. Avi Lerner is executive producing. Freeman will next be seen in "London...

Bad films are part of the movie-making process. For every Citizen Kane, there are dozens of Law Abiding Citizens; for every The Exorcist, hundreds of Exorcist II: The Heretics.
They're all meant to do badly, because they are bad. But sometimes, there's an aberration. Sometimes... they're successful. Very successful. Very, very successful.
Here, then, are 14 of our favourite least favourite films to ever make studio heads' eyes turn into little dollar signs (in order of awfulness).
14. Anger Management (2003)
Rotten Tomatoes ranking: 43%
Production budget: $75 million
Worldwide box office: $195 million
Anger Management spluttered back into like in 2012 as a TV vehicle for snake blood-drinking "winner" Charlie Sheen. It lasted two seasons: the first had 10 episodes, the second 90, all so the show could go into syndication. As soon as it hit its 100th episode, it was immediately canned.
13. Meet The Fockers (2004)
Rotten Tomatoes ranking: 38%
Production budget: $80 million

One of the most talked about pieces of news today surrounds the report that Peter Jackson's The Hobbit trilogy, which will come to a so-called "definitive" end on December 17 with The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies has already run up a $745 million price tag when you take into account the production budget on all three movies. Make no mistake, that's a lot of money, and it really calls into question the so-called $281 million budget for the first three Lord of the Rings movies, but that's what's been reported, though I have seen it as high as $310 million. Taking all this into account I decided to start doing a little research so I hit up Box Office Mojo (and Wikipedia when necessary) in an attempt to find out just what exactly are the most expensive movie trilogies of all-time and I have a list of 50 of them directly below.

When Martin Lawrence heard of Kelsey Grammer's desire to join him on the new FX sitcom Partners, the actor's first thought was, "How can we make this comedy work?" But comedic success has never been tough to figure out for either actor, both of whom made their marks on classic sitcoms. Before breaking out on the big screen in such hits as Big Momma's House, Lawrence spent five seasons playing smart-mouthed DJ Martin Payne on his eponymous Fox sitcom in the '90s, while...

I guess there's a large contingency that's been begging to see Robin Williams in a dress and old-age makeup once again. At least this time they won't need the makeup as THR reports Williams has signed on to star in Mrs. Doubtfire 2 with director Chris Columbus attached to return to direct and David Berenbaum (Elf) writing the script. Columbus directed the original back in 1993, which ended up grossing over $441 million worldwide, but that was 21 years ago and since then we've already had Martin Lawrence dressing up in three Big Momma's House movies, do we really need to see Williams do it all againc THR reminds us Bonnie Hunt was attached to write a script for the sequel back in 2001 and obviously that didn't come together so that could very well end up being the situation once again, but the attachment of Williams to the project would seem to suggest movement...

On Sunday at 11.25am, Channel 5 is showing an unwanted sequel to an unwanted sequel to an unwanted film
"You've been mommafied!" – Big Momma
The first Big Momma's House movie, where Martin Lawrence dresses up as a flatulent fat old lady, is not a good film by any means. But at least it had Paul Giamatti and Terrence Howard in the supporting cast, doing their best to lift the material. Compared to Big Mommas: Like Father, Like Son, it's a masterpiece.
Big Mommas: Like Father, Like Son has nothing going for it. It's not even as fun as Big Momma's House 2. It's an unwanted sequel to an unwanted sequel to an unwanted film. It stretches an already flimsy premise to depressing new lengths. It attempts to pass the baton to a new generation of film-makers, even though the baton is radioactive and caked in human excrement. This film doesn't deserve to be watched once,...

Steve Coogan is perhaps best known in the UK for his character Alan Partridge, a goofy DJ and TV personality billed as "Norwich's favourite chat show host" on the BBC. Fans of artier film fare will recognize him as the star of Michael Winterbottom's antic-filled biopics "24 Hour Party People" and "The Look of Love," or from the acerbic comedy "The Trip" with Rob Brydon. He's also been in and out of the gossip pages here and in the UK over the years, and was one of many high-profile people whose voicemails were hacked by the "News of the World."
Coogan's latest film, "Philomena," is a radical departure from previous ventures. It's a heartwarming movie about an older Irish woman with a 50-year-old secret; she'd gotten pregnant as a teen and been sent to live in a convent along with other "fallen" girls, where she worked in the convent's laundry...

Steve Coogan has cast aside the 'chatosphere' and Toblerones with the mesmerising and moving drama Philomena.
"I didn't just want the film to be an angry attack on the church," Coogan tells Digital Spy about his latest project, in which he stars alongside Dame Judi Dench as a journalist who tries to reunite a mother with her son 50 years after the baby was put up for adoption by cruel nuns.
The film provokes a range of emotions, with humour often cutting through the sadness. But Coogan, who co-wrote a screenplay based on his character Martin Sixsmith's factual account, explains that a lack of emotional objectivity wasn't a hindrance during the writing process: "You need to feel passionate... but then you also need to rein that in sometimes."
While Tony Hayers failed to grant Alan Partridge a second series, the future looks bright for the Norwich icon after his movie debut Alpha Papa.

Director: Stephen Frears; Screenwriters: Steve Coogan, Jeff Pope; Starring: Judi Dench, Steve Coogan, Michelle Fairley, Anna Maxwell Martin, Sophie Kennedy Clark; Running time: 98 mins; Certificate: 12A
"F**king Catholics," exclaims Steve Coogan's Martin Sixsmith at a crucial juncture in Stephen Frears's latest film Philomena. Judi Dench's title character, on a mission with Sixsmith to track down the son nuns forced her to give up 50 years earlier, has just reminisced about the fairground tryst that led her to fall pregnant and then get taken into virtual slave labour by a Roscrea convent ("I didn't even know I had a clitoris, Martin."). On reflection, Sixsmith's outburst encapsulates all that's good about Frears's film in one clear moment: funny, condemning of religious doctrine and shining a light on the contrasting world views of its two lead characters.

Always wanted to hear Judi Dench break down the plot of "Big Momma's House" but never thought you'd see the day? Well friends, the wait is over. "It's about a little black man pretending to be a fat black lady," exclaims Dench in the first trailer for the forthcoming Stephen Frears effort "Philomena." It's a pisser of a line in what otherwise looks to be one of the most tear-jerking films this year, a small-scale drama that follows Dench's title character as she tracks down the adult son she was forced to give up for adoption decades before with the help...

"12 Years a Slave," director Steve McQueen's harrowing real-life tale of slavery, was clearly the breakout smash of the Toronto International Film Festival. But that doesn't mean that it didn't have some competition, mostly in the form of the unassuming "Philomena," a based-on-a-true-story drama that might not have had the heavy historical weight of "12 Years a Slave" but seems to have packed a similar emotional punch.
"Philomena" is the tale of a journalist (played by Steve Coogan, who also co-wrote the film) who takes on the story of Philomena (Judi Dench), a woman who, as a teenager, had her child taken away from her. She's desperate to reconnect with her child before she dies, and Coogan, playing a former journalist turned political wonk, sees it as a chance for him to get back to what he's best at.

Ellen DeGeneres is returning to host the Oscars next March, following on from last year's rather controversial turn by Seth MacFarlane. It's the second time that the actress and chat-show host has headlined the Academy Awards, which she also compered in 2007, and should come as a welcome relief to those Hollywood stars still scarred from last year. DeGeneres style, after all, tends to be genuinely droll but rarely mean, and her chat-show suggests that most of Hollywood is friendly and at ease around her.Her 2007 turn as host saw DeGeneres ask Steven Spielberg to take a picture of her with Clint Eastwood (for her MySpace page - so long ago!) and try to pitch a screenplay to Martin Scorsese (''It's a cross between Goodfellas and Big Momma's House!''). Strangely, that project hasn't emerged, but it was a good night for Scorsese, who finally lifted Best Director and Best Picture for The Departed.

Has Martin Lawrence given us his best work yet? The 47-year old has more than 25 films on his resume; but I'm not concerned with all 25, instead those few films in which Lawrence Stars, and that depend almost entirely on the success of his performance. So, films like the Bad Boys franchise don't count, because he's partnered up with an even bigger star in Will Smith, in films directed by a mega director/producer in Michael Bay, also a star in his own right. I'd also dismiss films in which he's part of an ensemble cast like Boomerang for example. I'm talking about films like the Big Momma's House series, Black Knight, Rebound, and a few...

"I feel that I am very fortunate to have a lady friend that just happens to have an adam's apple."
Like so many other facets of Western culture that can trace their origins back to Ancient Greece — democracy, medicine, poetry, philosphy, among others — modern cinema owes a great deal to the Greeks and their festivals held in “theatrons” in honor of the god Dionysus. In those days, women were not allowed to participate in public life so any female roles were played by men.
Women have come a long way (baby) since then, but the tradition of men dressing like women made the leap from the stage to the screen when Charlie Chaplin played "Wife" in the 1914 short A Busy Day and the trend continues today, with entire franchises built around men in drag. Movember Movies is a series of posts dedicated to moustaches on film and the men who wear them. If you enjoy reading this, please consider donating to our Movember campaign! In honour of Billy Dee Williams, who didn't get much respect in our Movember poll, I decided to take a look at one of the more underrated films in his filmography. Although the man is obviously best known for his role in the Star Wars series, he got his first big opportunity with the football drama Brian's Song followed by some blaxploitation flicks in the early '70s, which is where the 'stache first took shape. In Nighthawks, however, we find him starring in an early '80s buddy cop film alongside Sylvester Stallone, who has some pretty gnarly facial hair of his own. That's right, Lando and Rambo together on screen... I think we can all agree that "Lando...

The star of Lol plays a teenage private investigator in the latest dismal attempt to con the under-20s out of money
Reading this on mobile? Click here to view
Despite having the career, voice and ruthlessly product-focused mindset of someone much older, it's important to remember that Miley Cyrus is still a teenager. That's why her last film was called Lol, because that's the sort of thing that teenagers say to each other instead of laughing these days.
Lol wasn't the box office success that anyone had hoped, but Miley Cyrus is still compelled to make films with annoying teen-speak titles, because her next one is called So Undercover. Presumably the films after that will also be named after things that teenagers say, such as I Never Asked to Be Born and You're Not My Real Dad and Hey Old Man Stop Writing Down Everything I Say It's Creepy.

Presumably the films after that will also be named after things that teenagers say, such as I Never Asked to Be Born and You're Not My Real Dad and Hey Old Man Stop Writing Down Everything I Say It's Creepy.
