"Kleingeld" is a 15-minute short movie from over 15 years ago and it managed to score an Academy Award nomination. The film's director and writer is Marc-Andreas Borchert and he is still making films today, managed to build a career on his success here. The two lead actors, however, have not acted too much recently, especially the actor who played the homeless guy. He has not been in films after this one.
This short movie is about the unusual relationship between a successful business man and another man who has nothing. The businessman gives the homeless guy regularly some change and the homeless guy, who is grateful for it, starts washing the other man's car. However, the business man initially does not want him near the car, then later on incidentally gets the car dirty, so he gets a real needed service from the homeless guy. One day, however, the business man has no change with him, so he tries to sneak off without getting seen. He does not succeed and even accidentally hurts the homeless guy with his car. From that day on, the homeless man is gone. In the end the business man finds him again and intends to give him more money than usual, maybe to get him back to his parking space, but the homeless guy just looks at him and goes away.
It's a decent story and even if I did not like the ending that much, it was difficult to look somewhere else during these 15 minutes. Captivating characters and an atmospheric setting. The most interesting discussion point is probably if the business man is a good or bad guy here and how it possibly changes throughout the movie. Good, but not great, job by Borchert. All in all, worth a watch.
