Plot: A spacey pool cleaner (Chris Pine) discovers a plot to steal water from Los Angeles during a drought.
Review: (Note – Poolman Was Reviewed At TIFF 2023) In the fourteen years I’ve been covering TIFF, I’ve seen only a handful of movies that I’d say were shockingly bad. The Mickey Rourke/ Megan Fox/ Bill Murray dud Passion Play comes to mind. Poolman ranks with the worst movies I’ve ever reviewed at JoBlo. It’s a stunningly unfunny comic noir vanity project for star Chris Pine, who also directed and co-wrote the film. That it was made at all is a testament to the power of celebrity, as it has already become notorious at the festival for the amount of walkouts taking place at the screenings.
So why is Poolman so awful? It comes down to the screenplay and Pine’s grating lead performance as a kind of...

The Fallout game series was one of the pioneers of GenX and Millennial storytelling.
When creators Tim Cain and Leonard Boyarsky created a post-apocalyptic vision of human civilization gone awry (but never one to lose its sense of humor), the open world narrative eschewed labels of Good and Evil.
The Fallout universe was made of multiple factions, each one selfish, every character a survivalist in their own way.
These political and social plots explored the diversity of human thinking, teaching us concepts of anarchy that were foreign to even 1990s American cinema.
Now that the Fallout series on Prime based on the Bethesda game has debuted, it has the nearly impossible task of trying to humanize a game that was all but designed to escape humanity.
The show is a big hit and most likely the best video game to TV show adaptation we will ever see, thanks to the clever mind of Jonathan Nolan.

Tiffany Haddish has addressed a viral moment from her stand-up performance at this weekend’s Netflix Is a Joke Festival, where she called out the protests happening on college campuses against the ongoing Israel-Hamas war.
When speaking to TMZ in a video on Monday, Haddish acknowledged the response to her comments and said, “I think if they are going to protest for one place they should protest for all the places that are having genocide happening. How many Black people got to die before we can get a protest? … If you want to protest? Protest. But if you really want to be effective and make change, go up to the legislation office, go up to your Senator, call your council. Go to Congress. [Go to the people] who make change … it would be way more effective.”

Role-playing game fans had a field day with last year’s Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves, a comedy caper film adapted from Wizards of the Coast’s world-famous tabletop board game.
The movie really understood what the game was about and carried over the whole D&d experience to the screen, from strange-sounding location names and authentic character depictions to, well, dungeons and dragons.
The film is styled as an emulation of a Dungeons & Dragons game session and takes place in the Forgotten Realms campaign setting from the original’s multiverse.
It is ostensibly a picaresque movie, with the main characters trying to pull a heist on a sleazy lord in the film’s fantasy universe, and there are some quality laughs for good comedic measure, but the heart of the film’s storytelling is in following the source closely.
That said, the film is not quite consistent when getting into the specifics.

Tiffany Haddish opened up about her policy on dating celebrities. In the process, she threw some serious shade at Henry Cavill.
The 44-year-old actress revealed that she’s on the dating app Bumble. However, you won’t see her on Raya, the dating app that caters to celebrities. That’s because she’s no longer interested in dating fellow stars.
“All the famous guys I used to think, ‘Oh, I would love to do it to him,’ I know them now and I’m like, ‘No,’” she said in a recent interview. Tiffany continued, using Henry as an example.

Sharing the sentiments of the majority of gamers, Todd Howard praised a game and developer that took the world by storm last year, winning numerous accolades in the process. Not only did the title manage to win the prestigious Game of the Year award at The Game Awards, but it also showcased how much dedication was put into it by the studio. Led by Swen Vincke, the team brought Dungeons and Dragons to the mainstream in a masterful way.
And the Fallout director suggests that its success didn’t come out of nowhere, given the developer’s previous track record.

Spider-Man 4 rumors are running wild, but the potential involvement of Steven Spielberg and Christopher Nolan has to be the craziest of them all. The film has already been through a number of plausible directors, but none seem to fit the requirements of either Sony or Marvel. One industry insider took the time to call out the false information about Spider-Man 4 directors, and he debunked the theories about four famous filmmakers.
Some wild speculations are circulating online about the director of the next Spider-Man project after No Way Home
Finding a replacement for Jon Watts, who directed the first three movies, hasn’t been easy. Both Marvel and Sony look to create a phenomenal film that could outperform the box office of Spider-Man: No Way Home. However, their visions for the fourth film are very different.

The film industry is reeling from the loss of the legendary production designer Ray Chan. Several genres, including many of Marvel Studios’ biggest films, highlight Chan’s meticulous eye for detail and world-building expertise. He died earlier this week, as promotion for his latest film, Deadpool & Wolverine, kicks into high gear. He is survived by his wife Lindsay and his children Caspar and Sebastian.

Baldur’s Gate 3 was a smash hit upon release. Of course, it’s a fantastic game, and the Baldur’s Gate name certainly helped. But, Swen Vincke, the head of Larian Studios, also recognized another crucial part of making a game successful—building trust with your fanbase.

Dimension 20, Dropout‘s Dungeons & Dragons show, is coming to Madison Square Garden for a night of live Ttrpg adventure.
Dimension 20: Gauntlet at the Garden will bring together the full D20 squad, including dungeon master Brennan Lee Mulligan and players Emily Axford, Ally Beardsley, Brian Murphy, Zac Oyama, Siobhan Thompson, and Lou Wilson, who’ve been dungeoning and dragoning together since 2018.
The show will be part of the group’s Unsleeping City campaign, which is set in a fictional (as far as we know…) and clandestine sixth borough of New York City that’s powered by magic and populated by supernatural residents. So, of course, it is appropriate that the event–which is Dimension 20‘s first U.S. live show since 2019–is also taking place in NYC.

Back in 2008, a music video landed on YouTube — then still largely in its infancy and mostly dominated by amateur video footage — and caused a bit of a stir, amassing a cult following and 1 million views. More than 15 years on, the video has morphed — extremely slowly — into a full-length feature film.
Chris Dane Owens’ upbeat love song “Shine on Me” was already a catchy slice of rock with some heavy ’80s inspirations. But it was the epic accompanying video — which he made for $70,000, no small sum in today’s music video world — that proved to be the real hit, largely for squeezing into its four minutes practically every clichéd trope and inspiration from popular swords-and-sorcery fantasy entertainment. “The Princess Bride” features prominently, but then there are elements of “Xena,” “The Lord of the Rings,” “The Chronicles of Narnia,” “Pirates of the Caribbean,” “Dungeons and Dragons” and many, many more.

In the movie Dream Scenario, starring Nicholas Cage, a biology professor named Paul Matthews starts appearing in the nightmares of random people all over the country.
None of these people understand why, nor do they know anything about Paul beyond recognizing his unusual face -- which gives them flashbacks of the terrible dream.
Paul himself is perplexed because he has not intentionally done anything to these people, nor is he a Freddy Krueger-type monster who controls a higher plane of existence.
But when Paul becomes infamous for his cameo appearances in peoples' dreams, he begins to see scorn, fear, hatred, and eventually violence coming from people who hold him personally responsible for their nightmares.
As I finished Dream Scenario, I realized this is what some right-leaning celebrities must feel like.
The Magic of Offending People You've Never Met

Sony and Marvel would love to bring back the web-slinger for a fourth film, as it was Spider-Man: No Way Home that gave their respective last billion-dollar film. However, the film hasn’t locked a director yet, with Jon Watts stepping away from the duties. One of the latest rumors suggested that Sam Raimi, the director of the original Spider-Man film series, will be helming the film.

However, one industry insider could confirm from his sources that Raimi is not a choice for the studios. The news is upsetting to some fans, who were excited about the director’s potential involvement due to the popularity of Tobey Maguire’s films.

Justice Smith, last seen in Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves, and The Holdovers breakout Dominic Sessa are ready to take over the magic stage.
The duo have closed deals to join Barbie actress Ariana Greenblatt in Now You See Me 3, Lionsgate’s latest installment of its heist-with-magicians thrillers.
The trio are the newcomers to the caper, with original cast members Jesse Eisenberg, Woody Harrelson, Isla Fisher, Dave Franco and Morgan Freeman expected to reprise their roles as thieving illusionists.
Plot details are being kept up a sleeve but the new feature will once again delve into the world of the illusionists and the bickering and sneaky quartet known as the Four Horsemen while introducing audiences to a new generation of magicians.
Ruben Fleischer will be sitting in the director’s chair when cameras roll. Eric Warren Singer, Seth Grahame-Smith and Mike Lesslie wrote the script while Bobby Cohen and Alex Kurtzman produce.

In his feature directorial debut, actor and comedian Jerry Seinfeld also stars in an upcoming comedy movie titled Unfrosted: The Pop Tart Story, based on a screenplay he co-wrote with a team of writers. His team of writers included Spike Feresten, Barry Marder, and Andy Robin. The movie stars Melissa McCarthy, Jim Gaffigan, Amy Schumer, James Marsden, Hugh Grant, Dan Levy, and more, in addition to Seinfeld leading the cast.
The movie, which is scheduled to make its debut on Netflix in May, is loosely based on the true story of the creation of Pop-Tarts toaster pastries. The actor-comedian reportedly deconstructed his Pop Tart stand-up bit from his last Netflix special, 23 Hours to Kill, and explored it into a giant comedy movie. The debutant director talks about casting Hugh Grant in the movie.

However, while Bethesda brought Fallout to new heights in 2008 with Fallout 3, the action RPG franchise goes back further by over a decade. Here is how Fallout began in 1997 before it was acquired by Bethesda in 2004 and eventually transformed into the gaming franchise millions of players know it as today.

The infamous Satanic Panic is often referred to as the 20th century equivalent of the Salem Witch Trials, with innocent heavy metal fans and Dungeons & Dragons players being accused of worshipping Satan while apocalyptic conspiracy theories about the rise of the Antichrist and the supposed “Mark of the Beast” ran rampant amongst radical believers. However, what a lot of people don’t know is that horror cinema played an accidentally crucial role in inspiring this regrettable era of prejudice and misinformation.
In fact, there are a handful of specific horror films that informed most of the fears we now associate with the Satanic Panic, with some of the most influential being Richard Donner’s 1977 classic The Omen and its numerous follow-ups. Despite playing fast and loose with their religious influences, these movies would go on to popularize then-obscure bits of biblical lore (like the Satanic connotations of “666”) that most...

The big and small screens are stuffed full of post-apocalyptic adventures, yet despite that cluttered landscape, few shows and films stick out to offer something unique for viewers. However, in “Fallout” for Prime Video, a thrilling adaptation of the beloved video game series, creators Geneva Robertson-Dworet and Graham Wagner present an off-kilter and fascinating look at humanity in the 23rd century.
“Fallout” begins at the end. The eight-episode series opens in picturesque America sometime in the future. It has reverted to the texture of a glossier post-racial 1955. Cooper Howard (Walton Goggins), an actor known for starring in Westerns, is the entertainment at a children’s party for an affluent family. As he packs his belongings, his young daughter Janey (Teagan Meredith) points outward toward the Los Angeles skyline just as a nuclear bomb explodes on the horizon. Anybody who has ever taken a stab at acting knows one aspect of the process deemed the absolute worst: the audition. Imagine stepping foot into a room filled with several people who are all there to judge you. Your looks, personality, emotions… every aspect of who you are on display for a room full of strangers. Well, in Hollywood, there is a legend of one audition that has been deemed the best put on tape. It was an audition for a new film by a director who was credited with single-handedly creating the summer blockbuster and who had a dream about crafting a more intimate family story about a kid and an alien. Imagine the immense pressure any actor, let alone a ten-year-old child, would be under to nail this audition. Yet this audition was so good that within seconds, the director, Steven Spielberg, uttered the words that would forever change this ten-year-old life: “Ok,...

“We had to throw you in”: Baldur’s Gate 3 Would Have Been Quite a Slog Without 1 Necessary Sacrifice
Larian Studios took on a mountainous task when they started on Baldur’s Gate 3. With video games, striking the right balance between teaching players the rules and keeping the gameplay enjoyable can be a herculean task.
This challenge was even more difficult for Larian, as its Baldur’s Gate series is based on the Forgotten Realms Dungeons & Dragons campaign setting; meaning it has to teach new and familiar players the DnD handbook rules. The studio recently spilled the beans on its approach to this dilemma during an interview at Gdc.

At Gdc 2024 (as reported on by IGN), Larian Studios founder Swen Vincke confirmed that the studio will not be making any Baldur’s Gate 3 Dlc or Baldur’s Gate 4. Perhaps more surprisingly, he revealed that Larian will be moving away from the Dungeons & Dragons universe entirely for their next project. That news shocked many who not only anticipated more Baldur’s Gate 3 content but expected Larian to continue working within the D&d universe given that game’s success.
In a follow-up statement, Vincke clarified that D&d publisher Wizards of the Coast is “not to blame for us taking a different direction” and even said that Wotc “did their best” and “have been a great licensor for us.” Of course, that just raised more questions about why, exactly, Larian decided to leave the D&d license behind them.

Despite being one of 2023’s biggest hits, Baldur’s Gate 3 will be Larian Studios’ last Dungeons & Dragons game. Its rights holder has talked about the parting of ways.
In more ways than one, fantasy RPG Baldur’s Gate 3 was developer Larian Studios’ magnum opus. Years in the making, the game was released to universal acclaim last year, and quickly became one of 2023’s biggest releases, with sales reckoned to be in the 15 million range.
With success like that behind it, you might think that Larian would start thinking about expansions or even sequels. Instead, studio founder Swen Vincke revealed during a Game Developers Conference panel on the 21st March that Larian wouldn’t be making a sequel, or even developing any Dlc. In fact, Vincke revealed that the studio had started working on Dlc of some form, only to abandon it.

Long before she was a movie star, a teenage Nicole Kidman appeared in the early-’80s action comedy “BMX Bandits,” a rowdy Australian kidpic full of bicycle stunts and Scooby-Doo crime-stopping shenanigans. It’s too early to say whether any of the adorable young leads in “Riddle of Fire” will go on to have successful acting careers. Still, it’s amusing to think that two decades into the 21st century, writer-director Weston Razooli has taken inspiration from such questionable classics, along with vintage live-action Disney fare — like “Escape from Witch Mountain” and the Herbie movies, which the studio sold in puffy white VHS cases — for his own retro-spirited debut.
Spun from equal parts imagination and nostalgia, “Riddle of Fire” comes as close as any film since “Spy Kids” or “Kisses” to mirroring the kind of cinematic adventures we made in our heads as kids. Razooli remembers how it feels to...

Over the past five or ten years, the Dungeons & Dragons brand has reinvented itself not only as the most popular RPG system in the world but also as a diversified range of board, card and video games. Since 2015, the range has included a line of board games that take the core RPG system and simplify it into an accessible board game. One of the first in this line was the recently reprinted Tomb of Annihilation, and we’ve been lucky enough to receive a copy.
Tomb of Annihilation sets the scene around a group of adventurers who are preparing for an epic journey through the jungles of Chult and into the titular tomb – one of the most famous settings in the Dungeons & Dragons mythos. Hired by Syndra Silvane to find a creature known as the Soulmonger and end “The Deathcurse,” our group of five heroes has a lengthy campaign ahead of them.

Since bursting onto the scene via Twitch in 2015, Critical Role has morphed from a group of friends playing a game of Dungeons & Dragons to a worldwide entertainment sensation. Among the accomplishments the company has created since taking control of its own IP in 2018: a hit animated series on Prime Video, novel and comic tie-ins by way of their own publishing arm Darrington Press, and of course, innovative new games and systems in the tabletop roleplay space. The first trailer for Poolman was recently released, giving audiences the chance to check out this cinematic triumph for themselves.

His investigation reveals a hidden truth about his beloved city and himself.” In addition to starring in Poolman,...

‘The American Society of Magical Negroes’ Star Justice Smith on His Bold New Film, D&d and PokemonGo

Though it was a crash course in big-budget filmmaking, the 28-year-old actor notes that he wouldn’t have had it any other way. “I’m blessed because those experiences were also highly technical environments that challenged me,” he says. “It strengthened my ability and gave me a more well-rounded arsenal of tools. While doing the thing I love.”
