Back in early 2020, we heard mention of an Alien vs. Predator anime series that had been made before the 20th Century Fox / Disney merger and never released. Now the folks at the Perfect Organism podcast have scored an interview with Joshua Izzo, who made Alien Day an official event while working at Fox. During this interview, Izzo confirmed that an Alien vs. Predator anime series was produced, all ten episodes were completed… and now they’ve just been sitting on a shelf (a shelf that is now inside the Disney vault) for years.
Izzo said (with thanks to Avp Galaxy for the transcript), “One thing that did not happen during Alien Day in 2016 was – there is sitting at Disney now, at 20th [Studios], 10 episodes of a fully completed Alien vs. Predator anime series that I produced. An alien craft shaped like an artichoke? A vessel with breasts? Here's our pick of 15 of sci-fi cinema's most eccentric spaceships...
For decades, heroes have crossed the universe in rocket ships and modified light freighters. Aliens have conquered galaxies in disc-shaped craft of varying sizes.
Yes, as long as there's been science fiction on the silver screen, spaceships have captured our imagination, from the matinee serials of the 30s to the sci-fi blockbusters of the present.
We all have our own idea of what a great spaceship should look like. For some, it's Han Solo's fastest hunk of junk in the galaxy, the Millennium Falcon. For others, it's the more graceful USS Enterprise, or maybe the utilitarian craft of 2001: A Space Odyssey. But what about cinema's more unusual, outlandish spaceships? The ramshackle ones, the anachronistic ones, the ones that look a bit rude, or just plain scary? Those are...

Anime fan favourite Space Pirate Captain Harlock stars in a new movie... but is it worth the wait?
If you're a fan of manga, you probably already know Harlock, although his fan following is much larger in France, Quebec and Japan. Harlock is the brainchild of Leiji Matsumoto (creator of Space Battleship Yamato/Star Blazers). Harlock was created in the 50s, but his breakthrough came in 1978 with the release of the original television series, Space Pirate Captain Harlock. He has since then seen many incarnations, but he had been absent from our screens since 2002. Given the current trend of revisiting old franchise favourites, Harlock was bound to suffer the reboot treatment at one point. Harlock has already been rebooted several times over the years, long before the term "reboot" was actually coined, so it shouldn't have been a big deal, but some fans feared that Harlock's move to the big...

Big budget blockbuster versions of old school anime and manga favourites are still very much in vogue in Japan, with the likes of “Space Captain Harlock”, “Space Battleship Yamato” and others having hit the screen in recent years. “Gatchaman”, better known to western viewers as “Battle of the Planets” (or possibly “G-Force: Guardians of Space”) is the latest to make the leap, director Sato Toya (“Kaiji: The Ultimate Gambler”) offering up a new, special effects heavy take on Yoshida Tatsuo’s early 1970s series “Science Ninja Team Gatchaman”, with Ayano Go as Joe (“Rurouni Kenshin”), Matsuzaka Tori as Ken (“Love for Beginners”), Goriki Ayame as Jun (“Kiyosu Conference”), Hamada Tatsuomi as Jinpei (“Umizaru Brave Hearts”) and Suzuki Ryohei as Ryu (“Forbidden Superhero”). The film is set in 2050, with the world having been invaded by the Galactors, an evil race of humanoid beings led by the evil Berg Katse, who manage to conquer half the planet,...

Without realizing it, I grew up exposed to the earliest anime, shows like Astro Boy and The Amazing Three and Kimba the White Lion. It was a quiet invasion overshadowed by louder, more colorful and kinetic American animation on Saturday mornings and classic Warner cartoons on weekday afternoons. As a result, I missed the next great era of American anime such as Space Battleship Yamato and Robotech. It certainly developed a large following in the 1970s and 1980s with the airwaves packed with these shows. In fact there were so many that several shorter-run series were packed together as Force Five. The Wednesday show was known as Spaceketeers and ran for 26 episodes, edited down from 73 episodes and never quite concluded the story.
Now, Shout! Factory has taken the series, which was edited into three different films by Toei in 2009 and is releasing them on disc. The new version was written and directed by William Winckler,...

Look out for the ship … with the giant ramming skull! I’ve never actually heard of “Space Pirate Captain Harlock”, but then again, I’ve never heard of a lot of things. It looks pretty cool, though. So what is Space Pirate Captain Harlock, anyway? We’re told that it’s about the titular Captain Harlock, who “rebels against Earth’s inept government and fights for humanity with his crew of 40 aboard the invincible space battleship Arcadia”. Apparently it started life as a Japanese manga in the late ’70s, became an animated TV series about the same time, and even inspired some big-screen movies. The trailer that you see below is for a new “Captain Harlock” CG movie directed by Shinji Aramaki and written by Harutoshi Fukui. Starring Yuu Aoi, Arata Furuta, Ayano Fukuda, Toshiyuki Morikawa, Maaya Sakamoto, Miyuki Sawashiro, Kiyoshi Kobayashi, and Chikao Ohtsuka, “Space Pirate Captain Harlock” is...

Another awesome new trailer has been released for the great looking CG animated film Captain Harlock: Space Pirate. The film may look like a video game cut scene, but it doesn't make it any less cool.
The story follows Captain Harlock as he fights for humanity with his 40 crew members aboard the invincible space battleship Arcadia. I'm looking forward to checking this out as soon as it gets released, whenever that is.
The movie is an adaptation of the popular Japanese manga series, which was created by Leiji Matsumoto in 1978 that eventually spawned a TV anime series, a few features, and the sequel called Arcadia of My Youth: Endless Orbit Ssx.
The script was written by Harutoshi Fukui (Mobile Suit Gundam Uc novels, live-action Bōkoku no Aegis) and was developed to reflect the themes of modern society. It was directed by Shinji Aramaki (Appleseed). The movie should be released in Japan sometime this fall.
The story follows Captain Harlock as he fights for humanity with his 40 crew members aboard the invincible space battleship Arcadia. I'm looking forward to checking this out as soon as it gets released, whenever that is.

Via Anime New Network, we have new info on a proposed English dub for the ambitious CG remake of Space Captain Harlock (which looks to be retitled Harlock: Space Pirate for english speaking audiences). London-based Gfm Films is reportedly working on an English dub as the film works towards completion in post-production. There's also a figure line in the works from Square-Enix that will be unveiled at Square-Enix's San Diego Comic-Con along with a new trailer. Maybe we'll get a worldwide theatrical release for this film? The visuals shown so far are very impressive and with the right marketing push a limited international run would be warranted. Said Avatar director James Cameron, ‘Mythic, epic and visually unprecedented, Harlock will take you to a whole new universe of ideas.’ Appleseed's Shinji Aramaki will direct the CG film which is said to reinterpret the themes in Leiji Matsumoto's 1977...

"The most powerful force is hope." Who is Captain Harlock? Unless you're from Japan or otherwise familiar with Leiji Matsumoto's manga, this is likely a character many have never heard of (at least I haven't). But if you're a fan of Appleseed or Final Fantasy, you'll want to take a look. Captain Harlock: Space Pirate is a CG animated space epic that seems to involve some gnarly space pirate ships, apparitions with pointy ears and lots of long-haired characters. The animation in this looks incredible, all the fine details in the hair and environments around them. I'm interested in seeing this admittedly more for the visuals than anything else. Here's the first official trailer for Shinji Aramaki's Captain Harlock: Space Pirate first found on AICN: Captain Harlock is the archetypical romantic hero, a space pirate with an individualist philosophy of life. He is as noble as he is taciturn,...

Even if you’re not a fan of manga anime, it’s well worth it to watch. Based on the original space opera anime Space Pirate Captain Harlock, Leiji Matsumoto’s manga character is being brought to CGI life in a new theatrical flick from Toei Animation.
Directed by Shinji Aramaki (Appleseed) from a script by Mobile Suit Gundam Uc author Harutoshi Fukui, the story follows Captain Harlock as he fights for humanity with his 40 crew members aboard the invincible space battleship Arcadia.
The 1978 Matsumoto’s manga initiated a TV anime series, a few features, and the 1982 sequel called ‘Arcadia of My Youth: Endless Orbit Ssx.’
Despite the fact that this new Captain Harlock CG feature is technically an adaptation, the film still follows the same story and the look of the character is even similar, though decidedly darker than the original 1978 Space Pirate Captain Harlock.

A first promo trailer for the CG anime based on Leiji Matsumoto’s Captain Harlock character screened during the International Animation Film Festival in Annecy (France). According to Catsuka, this film (which kinda reminds me of Final Fantasy and is supposed to open in 2013) may act as a pilot for a TV series telling the adventures of the famous Space Pirate, if it meets the financial expectations of the producers.

Classic 70s anime series Space Battleship Yamato is coming to the big screen in an expensive-looking adaptation. Check out the trailer right here…
Now, to the unwary, the trailer for Space Battleship Yamato will look very strange, indeed. And if you've never heard of the classic 70s anime series before, you may squint at the promo footage below and wonder, "Why does that spacecraft look like a boat? What's Captain Birdseye doing on there? And is that really Aerosmith playing in the background?"
For the bewildered among you, here's a brief explanation. Space Battleship Yamato, otherwise known as Space Cruiser Yamato, or even Star Blazers if you're from the Us or Australia, was an epic space opera anime series that originally aired in 1974.
Directed, written and designed by Leiji Matsumoto (whose immediately recognisable, elfin character art can also be seen in such classics as Captain Harlock, Galaxy Express 999 and...

At the 2010 Tokyo International Anime Fair, the trailer to Space Pirate Captain Harlock was screened inside the Toei Animation booth and fortunately for us, a sneaky fellow has captured the footage on video camera and uploaded it online. The 4-minute pilot trailer was directed by Shinji Aramaki (Appleseed Ex Machina), characters designed by Yutaka Minowa (Ninja Scroll), written by Harutoshi Fukui (Mobile Suit Gundam Uc) and the animation was produced by Marza Animation Planet (formerly Sega Sammy Visual Entertainment). For those not familiar with the source material, its based on a space opera manga by Leiji Matsumoto which was then adapted into an anime series. I'll let Wikipedia explain the plot:
In the future, Mankind has achieved a vast starfaring civilization, but is slowly and steadily succumbing to ennui or despair, often due to defeat and subjugation by a foreign invader. Rising against the general apathy, Harlock denies defeat and...

These two stellar trailers were shown at some booth of the past Toei Tokyo Anime Fair, 2010. I think the teaser for Gaiking, has already appeared online, but I haven't see the awesome one for Captain Harlock: Space Pirate before.
I don't know much about the history of these animes. All I know is tat if you're a hard scifi fan, a mech fan or a space opera fan you are going to sh*t a brick.
Enjoy!
