One of the most clever shorts I've ever seen...

I saw "The Extra" ahead of the film, "The Man Who Wasn't There". "The Extra" parodies those unctuous newspaper advertisements which run before every theatrical film here in Los Angeles. Director/Producer Philip Pucci does a masterful job of juxtaposing breathy poetic narration by actor, David Avallone, who is marvelous as the extra who tries much too hard, against slapstick scenes of Avallone as a "Zelig" like extra who has appeared in every major film in Hollywood since "The Wizard of Oz".

I look forward to more work from Philip Pucci. He is obviously incredibly talented and able to create a marvelous job of manipulating the audience into feeling they were watching a true advertisement. Every aspect of this film is perfect. The cinematography by M. Dietrick Schumacher, the sound, and music compilation by Jeff Taylor, and Avallone's performance. I shall follow this director's career closely as he clearly has much more to share with us. Pucci is a true craftsman.

It's a hard knock life for an extra

Warning: Spoilers
This short film centers around an extra who we have probably seen in hundreds of times in films without noticing. We see all the movies where he's in and what the exact parts are that he's playing. Unfortunately, even at less than three minutes, it becomes repetitive pretty quickly and is not funny enough to be able to look past that. Okay, we're supposed to kinda feel sorry for him, but there's gotta be better ways than voice-over from a director that he doesn't want to work with this particular extra really. What I did like, however, was the ending and how it was not only to this short film, but also to the extra's role.

As a whole, I can't really recommend this short film though. It felt like a weaver funnyordie-contribution.
