First Photo from Date Night Starring Steve Carell and Tina Fey

1 October 2009 9:20 AM, PDT | FilmJunk | See recent FilmJunk news »

If I had to guess, I'd say there's a very good chance that Shawn Levy's upcoming comedy Date Night will be a big hit. Not only does it bring together the stars of two of the biggest sitcoms on TV right now (The Office and 30 Rock), but it also has a supporting cast that includes James Franco, Mila Kunis, Mark Wahlberg, Kristen Wiig, Mark Ruffalo, Ray Liotta and yes, even G4's Olivia Munn. Not to mention the fact that Shawn Levy has directed two of the highest grossing comedies of the past 3 years with Night At The Museum and its sequel. But will it actually be good? The script for Date Night, which was originally written by Brian Koppelman and David Levien (Ocean's Thirteen, Knockaround Guys, Rounders), got an honourable mention from the 2008 Hollywood BBC Elite List as one of the best screenplays of the year. However, since »

Ellen Page and Drew Barrymore Whip It! in L.A.

29 September 2009 7:58 PM, PDT | MovieWeb | See recent MovieWeb news »

Films have long had the ability to inspire people to do new things, or develop passions for things they never knew they had in them. Take the poker phenomena that built and built after the Matt Damon film Rounders was released and developed quite a following. Myself, I was inspired to become a ninja after my first viewing of American Ninja as a child, but, alas, that never came to pass. Don't be surprised if after October 2 you start to see a lot of girls or young women breaking out the quads and skating around your neighborhood when the film Whip It! hits theaters nationwide and puts the unique sport of roller derby in the national limelight.

The film follows the journey of Bliss Cavendar (Ellen Page), a young woman who's trying to find herself when she discovers the sport of roller derby, so, what better way to celebrate this »

'Rounders' Sequel Becoming a Possibility

28 July 2009 12:37 PM, PDT | GetTheBigPicture.net | See recent Get The Big Picture news »

From that hotbed of movie news, PokerListings.com, comes an update about an unlikely sequel: Rounders 2. There is talk of a second film, all right, with writer David Levien saying "ideas are percolating" about another chapter. But he's not the only one who thinks it's a good idea.

Matt Damon tells the site he doesn't see any problem bringing the whole gang back together once (or if) a great story comes together. It's not often you hear a guy with his pick of interesting projects bring up a stagnant property like this, but Damon seems eager to revisit Rounders:

"Everybody would probably come back. The actors all had a really good time working together. I know Edward [Norton] would want to do it; we had a blast working together. [Director] John Dahl I'm sure would like to do it. Maybe someday it will happen. The only reason to do a movie »

Matt Damon Interested in Rounders Sequel

28 July 2009 10:00 AM, PDT | WorstPreviews.com | See recent Worst Previews news »

PokerListings had the chance to speak to Matt Damon and writer David Levien about the rumored sequel to "Rounders," the 1998 film about a reformed gambler (Damon) who must return to playing big stakes poker to help a friend (Edward Norton) pay off loan sharks. "We've been concentrating on 'Rounders 2' lately; Ideas are percolating," said Levien. "It's great to know that all of the original players want to come back and do another one." Damon confirmed that most of the original cast and crew would be interested in a returning for the sequel. "Everybody would probably come back," said Damon. "The actors all had a really good time working together. I know Edward would want to do it; we had a blast working together. [Director] John Dahl I'm sure would like to do it. Is Rounders 2 Becoming a Reality?

28 July 2009 6:03 AM, PDT | MovieWeb | See recent MovieWeb news »

It seems some of our favorite cinematic poker players might ante up for a sequel. According to PokerListings.com, David Levien, who along with Brian Koppleman wrote the original Rounders film, said a sequel is in the early writing stages.

"We've been concentrating on Rounders 2 lately; Ideas are percolating," Levien said. "It's great to know that all of the original players want to come back and do another one."

Of those original players, Matt Damon told the site he would be interesting in exploring a sequel.

"Everybody would probably come back," Damon told the site. "The actors all had a really good time working together. I know Edward would want to do it; we had a blast working together. [Director] John Dahl I'm sure would like to do it. Maybe someday it will happen. The only reason to do a movie like that would be if we had a great idea. »

It seems Rounders 2 is a possiblity. This should go over big with the poker nerds on our pocast, does anyone else care? Or am I the only guy left in America who doesn.t like to gamble? As poker has exploded into a ubiquitous phenomenon over the past decade, it's no surprise that Rounders has also grown into more than just a cult fave. I Am Legend duo might float again on City That Sailed

9 July 2009 11:31 AM, PDT | Corona's Coming Attractions | See recent Corona's Coming Attractions news »

In addition to developing their prequel to I Am Legend, director Francis Lawrence and star Will Smith are also working on a second possible collaboration, a family drama with a fantastic element called City That Sailed.

According to Variety, the project would see Smith play a father that lives in England while his young daughter resides in Manhattan. The father-daughter connection and desire to see one another is so great that it causes the island to actually detach from its foundation and sail across the Atlantic so the two could be reunited. I guess the love of the Smiths is stronger than the families who make the commute from New Jersey to Manhattan and who would now be separated from their loved ones.

The script for City That Sailed had already been finished but now 20th Century Fox has hired the Ocean's Thirteen and Rounders duo Brian Koppelman and David Levien »

Will Smith and Francis Lawrence May Reteam For Family Fantasy; I Am Legend Prequel Dead?

9 July 2009 7:26 AM, PDT | Slash Film | See recent Slash Film news »

Will Smith could re-team with his I Am Legend director Francis Lawrence, but not for the film you're probably expecting to hear about. Lawrence is developing a script called The City That Sailed as a vehicle for Smith. Originally written by Andrew Niccol, the script has kind of a neat, Miyazaki-ish logline: "a father and daughter living on opposite sides of the ocean whose love is so strong that it causes Manhattan to split off and float across the Atlantic." According to Variety, Brian Koppelman and David Levien (Rounders, Oceans Thirteen) will rewrite as the project goes forward. THR has a few more details of the script, which Fox picked up in 2006. Smith would be "a New York City street magician whose daughter, because of family circumstances, lives in England. In exploring a lighthouse one day, the girl discovers a room with magic candles and wishes to be reunited with »

Will Smith Uses Will Power To Move The ‘City That Sailed’

9 July 2009 7:13 AM, PDT | FilmSchoolRejects.com | See recent FilmSchoolRejects news »

Some people have a strong dislike for Will Smith due to the perceived ego of both his characters and the actor himself.  Expect that trend to continue with Smith's latest project where he plays a man capable of moving entire islands through sheer desire. Per Variety, Smith will be starring in City That Sailed.  The plot is described as being about "a father who lives on the opposite side of the ocean from his daughter. Their bond is so strong that it causes Manhattan to split off and float across the Atlantic." That's pretty stupid. There are two rays of light here though that keep this project interesting and potentially worthwhile.  The first (and the one many of you may not agree is a positive thing), Smith is developing the film with his I Am Legend helmer, Francis Lawrence.  Love it or hate it, Lawrence brought a strong visual sense to that movie that would benefit a »

Smith and Lawrence Enter The City That Sailed

8 July 2009 10:19 PM, PDT | TheMovingPicture.net | See recent TheMovingPicture news »

Will Smith and Francis Lawrence are reteaming for The City That Sailed, a fantastical drama setup at Fox that Smith is producing via his Overbrook Entertainment. Smith, who worked with Lawrence on the post- apocalyptic tale I Am Legend, may also star in the film. Written by Andrew Niccol (The Truman Show), the story follows a New York City street magician whose daughter, because of family circumstances, lives in England. In exploring a lighthouse one day, the girl discovers a room with magic candles and wishes to be reunited with her father, causing the island of Manhattan to break away and drift across the Pond. The studio picked up the spec in 2006. According to the trades, Rounders and Ocean's Thirteen scribes Brian Koppelman and David Levien have been brought on to rewrite Niccol’s original draft. No deals are made for either Lawrence or Smith. Lawrence is simultaneously developing Water »

Rounders: 10th Anniversary Blu-ray Returns

7 July 2009 9:22 PM, PDT | TheHDRoom | See recent TheHDRoom news »

Back in January I reported Miramax had slotted a new 10th anniversary edition of Rounders with Matt Damon and Edward Norton for an April 14 release on Blu-ray Disc. Before given an opportunity to hit store shelves, Buena Vista removed Rounders (and Monsters, Inc., for that matter) from their spring schedule. Given that Rounders' 10th anniversary window is only so long it was always assumed the title would return. Now we know when, but it's not when you might think. Online retailer Amazon.com has recommenced taking pre-orders for Rounders on Blu-ray priced at $28.99. The release date listed with the pre-orders is not this fall, winter or even next spring. Rounders: 10th Anniversary on Blu-ray will not see the light of day until May 1, 2010. Check out our previous report to familiarize yourself with the extensive bonus features to be offered in this set now nearly a year out. Click »

DiCaprio Takes A Gamble On Poker Movie

17 June 2009 5:15 AM, PDT | WENN | See recent WENN news »

Leonardo DiCaprio is bringing his love of poker to the big screen as he explores the murky world of online gambling in a new movie.

The star has earned the respect of the world's top players after participating in high-stakes poker tournaments with friend and fellow actor Tobey Maguire over the years.

And now the Hollywood card shark has landed a new script about Costa Rica-based Internet casinos, written by Ocean's Thirteen screenwriters Brian Koppelman and David Levien, according to the Hollywood Reporter.

The duo behind the as-yet-unnamed film also penned the script for 1998's Rounders, which saw Edward Norton and Matt Damon star as underground poker players. »

Online Casino film for Leonardo DiCaprio

16 June 2009 1:13 PM, PDT | The Scorecard Review | See recent Scorecard Review news »

Lots of people enjoy casinos. In fact some people like gambling so much they’re willing to part with their cash (or maybe win occasionally) in the virtual world without even setting foot in a casino. People also like casino movies like Ocean’s Eleven and Casino so why wouldn’t they like a film about online casinos?

Paramount Pictures likes the odds and is putting money on Leonardo DiCaprio in an untitled project about the world of online casinos, according to Variety. DiCaprio is attached to star in and produce the film, which will be based in Costa Rica.

The nameless project was written by Brian Koppelman and David Levien who have previously contributed to Rounders, The Girlfriend Experience and Ocean’s Thirteen. They clearly have some experience related to the topic.

I’m not ready to bet on this one yet. The interesting part of casinos and usually »

‘Rounders’ Writers Snag DiCaprio for Online Poker Flick

16 June 2009 9:36 AM, PDT | FilmSchoolRejects.com | See recent FilmSchoolRejects news »

Brian Koppelman and David Levien seem a bit obsessed with the gambling world. At least their writing past would point to being slightly more than interested - they wrote Rounders and Ocean's Thirteen and are now setting their sights on fulfilling their script for a movie that looks at the Costa Rica-based online poker world. They pitched the project and sold it to Paramount with Leonardo DiCaprio attached to star. The Hollywood Reporter claims that DiCaprio producing partner (and partner at Appian Way) Jennifer Davisson Killoran will be producing the picture. There's no word yet on exactly what the script will look like - since it doesn't exist quite yet - and I have no idea how to take a look at the world of online poker unless it's a story that delves into the management of those sites. It might be a dull two hours to watch Leonardo DiCaprio point and click his way down the »

Leonardo DiCaprio Gambles for the 'Rounders' of the Online World

16 June 2009 7:02 AM, PDT | Cinematical | See recent Cinematical news »

Hold onto your seats, Rounders fans -- it looks like round two is about to descend. Now, I'm not talking about a sequel, even though we'd all love more screen-time with the poker movie's killer cast, but rather a new gambling feature from Rounders scribes Brian Koppelman and David Levien. The Hollywood Reporter posts that Paramount has picked up the writers' latest pitch, and Leonardo DiCaprio (who is also starring in the pair's Beat the Reaper) will grab the lead.

Per usual, not a whole heck of a lot is being released about the plot right now. However, the little that is being said reveals a modern edge -- the feature will delve into the world of online casinos based in Costa Rica. Whether that focus is on the casinos themselves or the people who frequent them remains to be seen, but I'm betting on the latter.
