Channel 4 has refreshed its brand identity with an emphasis on its digital and streaming platforms.
From Tuesday, Channel 4 has transitioned to become the “world’s first public service streamer,” the British television organization said in a statement.
The relaunch is intended to target younger viewers who are accustomed to watching video content across different devices and platforms, including phones, tablets, computers and streaming services.
The refresh will put a greater emphasis on “app-like” experiences across the Channel 4 brand, which will continue to include the flagship linear broadcast network and ancillary TV channels.
New features on Channel 4’s digital and streaming properties are designed to increase engagement with a growing segment of younger viewers, executives said in a statement. They cited internal research that showed nearly one million young people between the ages of 13 and 24 streamed Channel 4 content on a PC or laptop, an increase of 17 percent when compared to the prior year.

Image created by “Shutterstock.AI” X-Files fans, remember when The X-Files was so popular, they made a movie during the show’s run? The X-Files: Fight the Future came out in June 1998 and wrapped up some of the show’s biggest mysteries while introducing new ones. David Duchovny, aka Agent Mulder, thought it was a great idea (even if it was tough to make). He even thought it could have been a good way to end the series… but little did he know it would keep going for four more seasons! Black Panther director Ryan Coogler is developing a reboot of The X-Files, but the world has changed considerably since the original series debuted over thirty years ago, presenting a new set of challenges.
While chatting with Inverse, The X-Files creator Chris Carter spoke about the reboot and the difficulties Ryan Coogler will face with telling “conspiracy” stories. The original show arrived in the wake of Watergate and the Jkf assassination, but conspiracies have taken on a different tone in recent years. “Everything’s a conspiracy,” Carter said. “No one knows what the truth is. It’s completely subjective and relative now.“
Carter brought up Kate Middleton, Princess of Wales, who recently found herself the subject of conspiracy theories following her surgery and public absence, later coming out to reveal she had been diagnosed with cancer. “Can you imagine, first of all, being sick — but then everyone’s got a take on it?...

The X-Files: Fight the Future (watch it Here). Mulder and Scully on the big screen. That’s it. Need I say more? After 119 episodes, a movie was inevitable. While Chris Carter was happy with the success that the show had generated, he wanted to make more x-philes. Carter saw the movie as an opportunity to reach an even wider audience and make any skeptics true believers, but also reward current fans. Crafting a feature film also meant the ability to be able to dive deeper into the alien mythology that the series had been slowly weaving.
Making the leap from the small screen to the big screen was quite the undertaking. Carter explained that since they had been writing mini-movies, creating a full-length feature film felt like the next logical progression. Juggling the production of 24 episodes for The X-Files and another 24 for the spin-off Millennium was no easy feat. So,...

Lille, France — The big news at Series Mania was Warner Bros. Discovery’s European roll-out timeline for Max, announced Thursday at the climax of the Series Mania’s Lille Dialogues.
The most keenly anticipated session was nearly Series Mania’ Forum first: a Netflix showcase hosted by a confident Larry Tanz who significantly proved the only goal streamer exec to drill down on volume commitment.
Nobody was saying at Series Mania the industry is in an easy place. But signs at this year’s edition that, at least in Europe, business may be turning a corner, or at least has the corner in sight. The newest normal will be a far cry from the peak TV of old, however.
Final attendance soared to 4,200 at the Forum, an all-time record. That’s hardly surprising. “You have all the French broadcasters there, a lot of European public broadcasters, a few Scandinavian commercial channels and some platforms.

Slovakia’s explosive political drama “Our People” will head to Series Mania’s Forum Co-Pro Pitching Sessions in March.
Produced by Jakub Viktorín and Tomáš Hrubý for nutprodukcia and written by Miro Šifra, it will be directed by Tereza Nvotová.
The miniseries, inspired by tragic real events, depicts the killing of investigative journalist Ján Kuciak and his fiancee Martina Kušnírová.
Kuciak used to focus on tax frauds committed by business figures and alleged connections between local politicians and the Italian mafia. They were assassinated in 2018 in their home.
“We not only have their family’s consent, but also tens of thousands of pages of case files,” said Šifra.
“These documents provide a detailed and fascinating glimpse into the interplay between the state and the mafia. They also highlight the courage of those who risk their lives to expose this.”

Chicago – The truth is out there for David Duchovny, and he is definitely a seeker. The actor, best known for the TV series “The X Files” and “Californication,” has a new film in theaters opening February 14th, in which he portrays a father figure to the title character in “Adam the First.”
Duchovny is James, who is raising Adam (Oakes Fegley). When the boy is old enough to understand, James tells him he’s not his biological father. As Adam gets to be a teenager, his education is mostly about survival, as James keeps him off the grid in trailer in the woods. When the past catches up with them, Adam has to make his escape, but not before learning that three men named Jacob could possibly be his real father. The young teen must strike out on his own to find his roots, encountering the possibilities along the journey.

It’s been five years since “The X-Files” wrapped up its two revival seasons, with a planned animated series scrapped earlier this year. So what’s next from the world of “The X-Files”?
According to a new report from Bloomberg this week, Ryan Coogler (Black Panther) is still attached to produce a brand new version of “The X-Files,” which franchise creator Chris Carter had first teased earlier this year. The site reports, “Disney is developing a new version of The X-Files that would be produced by Ryan Coogler, the director of Black Panther and Creed.”
Carter had previously teased the new series would feature “a diverse cast.”
Stay tuned for more as we learn it.
“The X-Files” originally ran for nine seasons from September 1993 to May 2002, with tenth and eleventh seasons arriving in 2016 and 2018. In total, 218 episodes were made.

In the age before streaming usurped network and cable as the main form of TV watching, primetime shows used to do absolutely anything to grab viewers' attention. Ratings grabs were common and still are if you click over to CBS, Fox, and the like today. Yet, for a particular era of the aughts and 2010s, it felt like network TV was more desperate than ever to keep eyes glued to the screen -- even when the much-teased twists started feeling cheaper than ever. Dr. House drove his car through Cuddy's dining room on "House," Alex Karev fell for an amnesiac ferry crash patient on "Grey's Anatomy," Artie could walk for just one episode of "Glee," and countless other characters were thrown into ridiculous situations for the sake of building a quick teaser promo around them.

Editor’s note: One in a series of stories marking the 100th day of the WGA strike.
Although it might be important to both the Writers Guild and SAG-AFTRA that every Los Angeles-area studio have a union presence during the strike, some picket lines hold more weight than others. In other words, it didn’t take long before writers — and much later, the actors — started picking their favorite locales when it came time to protest room sizes, low residuals and the future use of artificial intelligence.
As part of our ongoing coverage of the WGA strike, Deadline has visited every major picket line in the city. It wasn’t long before we figured out who had the best (and worst) turnout based on the conditions, including available sidewalk space, safety — and shade — at each studio, who touted the biggest names, and who attracted the best reunions.

The episode of Revisited covering Species was Written by Ric Solomon, Narrated by Kier Gomes, Edited by Joseph Wilson, Produced by Lance Vlcek and John Fallon, and Executive Produced by Berge Garabedian.
The 1990s were famous for Alien Invasion films. Independence Day, The X-Files Movie, Alien 3 and Mars Attacks all come to mind. Yes, those are all great but what about Roger Donaldson’s classic 1995 creature feature Species (watch it Here)? Of course, the first thing that comes to mind is the beautiful Natasha Henstridge and this being her first acting role. She’s an absolute terror and force to be reckoned with here. Species is something of a cult classic and one we need to talk about. So, on this episode of Horror Revisited, let’s dive back into one of the better Sci-fi 90s films.

Disney has licensed 10 series to Channel 4’s streaming service in the U.K.
The deal, which will add some 1,000 hours of American drama to Channel 4’s streaming platform, will kick off with “Alias” Seasons 1-5 and “The Americans” Seasons 1-6 this summer, followed by “Empire” Seasons 1-6, “Scandal” Seasons 1-7, “The X Files” Seasons 1-11, “Bones” Seasons 1-12, “The Killing” Seasons 1-4, “Star” Seasons 1-3, “Grown-ish” Seasons 1-6 and “Abbott Elementary” Seasons 1-2.
Except “Star,” all the series are available on streamer Disney+ in the U.K., which requires a monthly subscription. The Channel 4 streaming service is free.

Starting from the 90s and beyond, American-British actress Gillian Anderson has made a transgenerational impact with a career that’s been nothing short of outstanding. Anderson earned global recognition for her portrayal of FBI Special Agent Dana Scully on the long-running series, The X Files. She not only won a bevy of awards for her powerful performance but she also sparked the influential “Scully Effect,” inspiring many young girls to pursue careers in traditionally male-dominated fields. On the back of such staggering achievements, Anderson continued to assert her dominance by taking on bold and diverse characters in both film and television.

When the 2022 Primetime Emmy nominations were revealed, Rhea Seehorn and Sydney Sweeney both had the honor of seeing their names come up twice. In addition to landing slots in the Best Drama Supporting Actress lineup for “Better Call Saul” and “Euphoria,” respectively, Seehorn (“Cooper’s Bar”) also competed for Best Short Form Actress while Sweeney (“The White Lotus”) was included among the Best Limited Series/TV Movie Supporting Actress contenders. Since neither of them had been recognized by the TV academy before, they became part of a group of 24 doubly-nominated Emmy first-timers.
Neither Seehorn nor Sweeney succeeded on either of her bids, but that isn’t surprising given the fact that only six of this group’s two dozen members have actually pulled off wins. The first such victor was Robert Cummings, who also originally established the club back in 1955. He received what would now be considered the Best Limited/Movie...

Rapid deterioration: Deadline’s in-depth analysis of the Danish TV market last week preceded one of the biggest shocks in the Scandi industry for decades. In the early hours of Monday morning, the region’s streaming powerhouse Viaplay issued a trading update signaling the immediate resignation of CEO Anders Jensen and the scorching of the group’s long-term financial guidance amidst rapid deterioration in the ad market and subscriber churn. Viaplay has been growing aggressively in recent years, greenlighting one original per week such as the high-profile Ronja the Robber’s Daughter adaptation (pictured), snapping up sports rights, and launching in key territories including the U.S., but it appears the growth has been a smidgeon too fast and stock has been tumbling.

Warner Bros. Discovery’s (Wbd) Jamie Cooke is supercharging “original documentaries that push the boundaries” from his Central & Eastern Europe, the Middle East and Turkey region by greenlighting around 10 docs per year.
Cooke took charge of the vast territory following the WarnerMedia/Discovery mega-merger and was speaking to Deadline prior to a Nem keynote as he nears one year in post.
While Wbd is taking a light-touch approach to ordering original content from the region, especially prior to the launch of the rebranded Max streamer, Cooke said it is documentaries where he is most looking to make an impact.
“Pushing the boundaries and shining a light on topics that are challenging is really important for me,” he told Deadline. “We need to be measured and cautious in the investments we are making right now and the focus for me is really on the docs side.”

The “erosion of the power of writers in the U.S.” can serve as a “learning opportunity” for European storytellers, according to The X Files EP Frank Spotnitz.
Spotnitz called for a “set of core values that we can strive and live up to” alongside “practical concrete strategies in countries where resources are in short supply” to improve the quality of TV writing in Europe – the continent in which he has lived for the past 13 years and runs his production outfit, Big Light Productions.
Speaking at Nem in Dubrovnik, Spotnitz criticized the “folly” of American producers for “eroding the power of writers” in the U.S.
“If U.S. studios succeed in suppressing the power of American writers they may well save money but they also may well reduce the quality and long term success of their own businesses,” he added. “The folly of American producers can serve as a...

How does writer Darren Markey and director Kate Whitbread’s (Surviving Georgia) addition to the current folk horror revival compare to other recent additions like The Last Thing Mary Saw and The Righteous? Is it at least better than Hellbender?
Claire is a cop. She’s currently on suspension pending the results of an investigation of a suicide that happened in her presence. A call from her Uncle Cliff (John Voce; Primeval) with news of another death brings her back to her hometown of Blackwood.

Blackwood, the latest chapter in The Elder Scrolls Online’s ongoing “Gates of Oblivion” event, is poised to be a particularly special experience for fans of the all-time classic Bethesda fantasy RPG The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion. While the chapter is set 800 years prior to the events of Oblivion, Blackwood’s versions of the sprawling cities of Leyawiin and Gideon, as well as the devilish Deadlands, will undoubtedly feel familiar to veterans of the 2006 classic. But as we learned during a hands-on demo period in April, the expansion also features new areas and characters that bring these iconic locations to life in new ways.
Like with the game’s Skyrim-based Greymoor chapter, nostalgia permeates every aspect of Blackwood, including the setup of its story. Mehrunes Dagon, Oblivion‘s diabolical antagonist, takes center stage once again as the chapter’s main villain, but things aren’t as they seem.

Mumbai, March 4 (Ians) Pranati Rai Prakash recently wrapped up Abbas-Mustan's upcoming web series Penthouse. She says the thriller series gave her a chance to work with people she has admired as a child.
The series also stars Bobby Deol and Arjun Rampal, along with Mouni Roy, Larissa Bonesi and Sharman Joshi.
"I worked with people I've watched on the screen as a child. It was amazing. Our directors, Abbas-Mastan, my co-actors -- everyone was very polite and great to hang around with. Each has a unique personality," she said.
On her character, the actress said: "She's a rebel, she's lonely. That's a little about my character. I'll be the reason for some chaos, that's all I can say."
Pranati recently ventured into music as a singer-composer with her debut single Tera muskurana, which released on February 25.

As the first (and maybe only) ever Breaking Bad movie, El Camino features plenty of Easter eggs and references from the classic series.
Breaking Bad creator Vince Gilligan faced an interesting challenge with the first Breaking Bad movie, El Camino.
On the one hand, he had to develop a self-contained story that would appeal to millions of Netflix subscribers scrolling through their accounts and seeing a movie with a weird Spanish car name. On the other hand, however, he knew he had to satisfying the legion of Breaking Bad fans, looking to return to the world of Breaking Bad for the first time since 2013 (save for the Better Call Saul prequel years of course).

As promised in the fictional Kaslan Corp's announcement video for their "Artificial Intelligence human companion" Buddi, the first trailer for the Child's Play remake premiered before screenings of The Prodigy, and now it's been released online for everyone to see.
Starring Aubrey Plaza as Karen, Brian Tyree Henry as Mike, and Gabriel Bateman as Andy, the Child's Play remake was directed by Lars Klevberg (Polaroid) from a screenplay by Tyler Burton Smith (Kung Fury).
The new Child's Play is a reimagining of the 1988 film of the same name directed by Tom Holland from a screenplay he co-wrote along with Don Mancini and John Lafia.
While the previous entries in the Child's Play franchise featured a killer "Good Guys" doll possessed by the serial killer Charles Lee Ray, the remake will take the tech-centric route with the AI-enhanced "Buddi" doll.

The most surprising thing about “Project Blue Book” is that it took so long to become a TV show in the first place. As it will tell you itself at the top of every episode, History’s new scripted drama is “based on true events,” or at least the recorded instances of possible UFO sightings and the Air Force’s subsequent investigations during the 1950’s and ’60s. Each week, a new case sparks new intrigue, both about the potential of both alien life and a government conspiracy to cover it up. All the while, the Cold War looms ominously, infusing everyone with a deep unease and paranoia they can’t shake no matter how hard they try to stave it all off.
In this way, “Project Blue Book” sets itself up to be a period piece “X Files,” a reliable formula that would be hard to fumble completely. That inspiration...

At this over-saturation point of Peak TV, maybe it’s time television eased up on the biting social criticism and proceeded with its original purpose: Fantasy fulfillment. To a certain kind of discerning viewer, “The X Files” star Gillian Anderson playing a hip sex therapist mother is fantasy fulfillment we didn’t even know we had. Thanks to Netflix’s newest teen comedy, “Sex Education,” now we can all rest easy knowing there’s a version of Scully out there who doesn’t nat an eyelash when asking a grown man about his “earliest memory of [his] scrotum.”
Donning a stylish Miranda Priestly white bob and her native British accent, Anderson is unflappably cool in the new trailer for “Sex Education,” which opens with her character asking her son Otis (Asa Butterfield) why he’s pretending to masturbate. Following in his mother’s footsteps, Otis unwittingly becomes his school’s de facto sex therapist,...

"More than a toy... he's your best friend." While the Child's Play franchise featured the terrors of a corrupted Good Guys doll, the remake will focus on the horrors of a malevolent "Buddi" doll, as evidenced by the film's new poster, which also reveals the movie's 2019 release date.
The new poster was unveiled on the official Child's Play Facebook page (see below) with the caption, "The fun is just getting started. Your best friend hits theaters nationwide on June 21, 2019."
Despite the different name, the killer doll still looks very similar to the Good Guys doll named Chucky from the previous seven installments in the franchise. It's not yet known if the doll in the new movie will be named Chucky, nor has it been announced who will voice him (Brad Dourif has given life to the iconic character in all seven movies thus far), but we'll keep Daily Dead readers...

Back in July, it was revealed that a remake of 1988's Child Play was in development, and now MGM and Orion Pictures have announced that production on the contemporary reimagining has commenced in Vancouver, with Aubrey Plaza playing the role of Karen, Brian Tyree Henry as Mike, and Gabriel Bateman playing Andy.

Peter Donat, best known as agent Fox Mulder’s father on “The X Files,” died on Monday due to complications of diabetes, his wife, Maria, told the New York Times. He was 90.

Peter Donat, whose long career spanned roles on Broadway, television and in films, has died. He passed on Monday at home in Point Reyes Station, Calif. from complications of diabetes, according to his wife.
The Canadian-born character actor was best known for his role in six episodes of TV’s The X Files, where he recurred as Agent Fox Mulder’s father.
While that role was memorable, it was just a piece of the actor’s broad creative career. He performed frequently with respected companies like the American Conservatory Theater in San Francisco and the Stratford Festival in Canada, playing Cyrano de Bergerac, Prospero, Shylock, King Lear and Hadrian VII.
In between the stage roles, Donat was a frequent presence as a guest-starr on such shows as The F.B.I., Hawaii Five-o, Mannix, McMillan & Wife, Hill Street Blues and Murder, She Wrote.
One well-received television role came on the original Dallas as the doctor treating J.

Barely a day goes by anymore without a new report of a long gone show trying to crawl its way out of the grave. This week, it’s “Designing Women.” Before that, it was “Alf” and “The Facts of Life.” The week prior to that got consumed by controversy over a “Buffy” reboot (which turned out to be a spin-off) and Kelsey Grammer idly musing about a “Frasier” revival. And so on, and so forth; wash, rinse, repeat. It apparently doesn’t even matter if the reboot or revival or spinoff or what have you is actually going to series, so long as someone — anyone — involved expresses interest in doing it. Within a matter of minutes, the internet is aflame with excitement and dread alike, until the next possibility crops up and sparks the whole cycle all over again.
