Ariana Grande hasn’t performed live much these last few years, but on Monday, she delivered a rare set at the 2024 Met Gala. Obviously, that’s a hard (practically impossible) ticket to get, but the pop star has since shared a bunch of videos from her set on TikTok.
Grande opened her seven-song set in the most apt way possible, with a cover of the 1959 Sleeping Beauty tune, “Once Upon a Dream,” to match the Met Museum Costume Institute’s spring exhibit, “Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion.”

Kent Melton, the animation sculptor who created maquettes made of clay for iconic characters found in movies including Aladdin, The Lion King, Mulan, The Incredibles and Coraline, has died. He was 68.
Melton died Thursday at his home in Stone County, Missouri, of Lewy body dementia, family members told The Hollywood Reporter.
One of the few artists left in the industry who still sculpted in clay, Melton was a key player in the Disney animation renaissance of the 1990s. Later, he helped Laika Studios become a stop-motion powerhouse. Along the way, he was entrusted by animators to bring their two-dimensional drawings into a three-dimensional world.
Melton’s first Disney credit came on Aladdin (1992), followed by work on such other studio films as Thumbelina (1994), The Lion King (1994), Pocahontas (1995), The Hunchback of Notre Dame (1996), Hercules (1997), Mulan (1998), The Prince of Egypt (1998), Tarzan (1999), The Road to El Dorado (2000), Atlantis: The Lost Empire (2001), Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron...

The very idea of Mariah Carey and Whitney Houston collaborating is breathtaking. Carey discussed what it was like getting to know Houston while they worked on the movie The Prince of Egypt. She also revealed that something about the creative process irked her.
Mariah Carey and Whitney Houston did a song by a Broadway titan for ‘The Prince of Egypt’
In her 2020 book The Meaning of Mariah Carey, the “Touch My Body” singer recalled producer Jeffrey Katzenberg asking her to perform “When You Believe” with Houston for The Prince of Egypt. Media, entertainment and creation will be the industries most impacted by the emergence of artificial intelligence, DreamWorks Skg cofounder Jeffrey Katzenberg said Thursday, and that will likely mean drastic cuts in the number of people needed to produce the art forms.
“If you look at sort of a historical perspective, you know, whether we went from a pen, a paintbrush, a printing press, a still camera, a movie camera,” the longtime industry executive said at the Bloomberg New Economy Forum. “These are things that just expanded creativity and all sorts of storytelling and extraordinary ways.”
The evolution of the industry has been “explosive” in the last decade, said Katzenberg, who was one of the losers in the explosive growth of streaming when his Quibi service shut down after just seven months in 2020.

The Prince of Egypt is a hit musical which was first released in cinemas in 1998 – but has made its way and found a home on stage, with a production currently ongoing in London’s West End. But fans of the story will have the wonderful opportunity to combine the two mediums, as a recording of the production is going to be screened, on two separate days – October 19th & 22nd. To mark the occasion, we spoke to the legendary composer and songwriter Stephen Schwartz.
We discuss the timeless themes of the story, and what makes them resonate with audiences today – which Schwartz explains are particularly timely at present. We also talk about his original collaboration with Hans Zimmer, the differences in process when it comes to writing for stage or screen, and considering he this year celebrated a 75th birthday – we take a look back across what can only be described...

Paradigm Talent Agency has hired Chris Till as an agent in their theater literary and content division, Variety has learned exclusively.
The hiring brings Till back to Paradigm, as he previously worked at the agency early in his extensive entertainment career, as he now has over 20 years of industry experience. He previously spent over a decade at CAA before joining Verve in 2020 to help launch that agency’s New York office.
Till will be based in Paradigm’s New York office as well, with a focus on representing writers and directors across theatre, film and television.
“I’ve always thought of Chris as the one that got away,” said Paradigm partner and head of the New York office Jack Tantleff. “He started his career as a young agent at Paradigm, and I have watched as he built his business to become one of the truly bright stars in our industry.

Exclusive: As the Annecy Animation Film Festival gets underway this weekend, Warner Bros’ newly hired President of Feature Animation Bill Damaschke has announced a rebranding of the motion picture division with a focus on filmmakers.
Previously known as Wag, aka Warner Animation Group, the Burbank, CA lot’s feature toon unit will now be known as Warner Bros Pictures Animation.
“It’s honoring the past and rich history of the company. Warner Bros Pictures Animation released movies like Iron Giant, Space Jam, Corpse Bride, Polar Express, Happy Feet and The Lego Movie — benchmark films that broke new ground, new technology, new ways of telling stories and were successful, artistically and commercially. They last in people’s hearts, every one of those films,” said Damaschke about the label, which counts a filmmaker-driven original feature animated canon from such directors as Brad Bird, Tim Burton, George Miller, Robert Zemeckis, and Phil Lord and Christopher Miller.

Women have broken into many acting, producing, and directorial ventures in the recent past — think Reese Witherspoon’s Hello Sunshine and those at her company — the animated film sector continues to have a pretty thick glass ceiling. That’s especially true at Disney and its adjacent companies, where only three women have directed feature-length animated movies.
That said, a few women have begun cracking the ceiling and forging paths. As they go, they’re creating storylines and beloved characters that put more women at the forefront. The proof speaks for itself: Women-directed animated projects at Disney have generated some of the biggest box office numbers.

The 95th Academy Awards are behind us now, and one of the most interesting categories was Best Original Song. Winning an Oscar for an original song is definitely a prestigious honor, but perhaps the second most coveted prize for original movie music is the Grammy. Being voted on by two different academies means there’s bound to be a lot of discrepancies between the awards, especially with different voting deadlines and eligibility rules. With that in mind, what Oscar winning songs have also managed to get at least one Grammy nomination?

Warner Animation Group, the Warner Bros. animation unit responsible for feature-length animation, is getting some new leadership. Bill Damaschke, an animation veteran who started his career as a production assistant on Disney’s “Pocahontas” and eventually became COO of DreamWorks Animation, is in final negotiations to become head of Warner Animation Group, TheWrap has confirmed.
Executive VP Allison Abbate was the last person to lead the unit; she departed in summer 2022 after the merger with Discovery. The fallout of the new leadership included the cancellation of the mostly finished “Scoob: Haunted Holiday,” a follow-up to the 2020 animated feature “Scoob,” as a cost-cutting measure (done at the same time as the shelving of “Batgirl”).
At Warner Bros. Discovery, Damaschke will report to Warner Bros Film Group co-chairpersons and CEOs Michael De Luca and Pamela Abdy. It hasn’t been announced what Damaschke’s title will be.

What a world we could live in if only we allowed the innocence of children to run it.
My 11-year-old daughter Sophia is just learning about the scope of movies. You would assume the child of an entertainment writer and Oscar enthusiast might be well-versed in the styles of Akira Kurosawa and Steven Spielberg. Instead, she’s currently enamored with the world of horror movies, with the “Scream” franchise standing as her most vital consumption.
She’s only been to a handful of industry screenings, one of which was Pixar’s “Coco” (2017), which gave the two of us the memorable moment in which I was weeping intensely as Miguel sang to his beloved grandmother after returning to the real world. Then, with a dead silent New York audience, not knowing how to use her “inside voice,” she shouted, “Are you crying?” The crowd erupted in laughter.

Reports of Steve Martin's impending retirement may have been greatly exaggerated, or "a little overstated," by the actor himself. Martin made headlines last month when he seemed to indicate that he would be hanging up his hat after Hulu's Emmy-nominated "Only Murders in the Building" series wraps up. The show has earned Martin and his costar and longtime collaborator Martin Short dual nominations in the Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series category, putting them head-to-head in tonight's awards ceremony.
Maybe it's just the thrill of awards night, but on the red carpet at the Emmys, Martin seemed to backtrack a bit on some of his comments in August, when he said, "When this television show ['Only Murders in the Building'] is done, I'm not going to seek others. I'm not going to seek other movies. I don't want to do cameos. This is, weirdly, it."

The 14 Oscar nominations Alex North received for his film scores between 1952 and 1985 make him one of the most-recognized composers in academy history, but also one of the most overlooked, as all of his outings were unsuccessful. He did, however, earn the organization’s esteem in 1986 as the recipient of an honorary Oscar – the first given to an artist in his music field. Now, the academy’s board of governors have chosen to fill in another blank space by making Diane Warren the first songwriter on their list of honorary awardees. After 13 unfortunate Best Original Song losses, the time has finally come for the perennial contender to have her day in the sun.

The films in the running for the 2022 Best Original Score Oscar are “Don’t Look Up,” “Dune,” “Encanto,” “Parallel Mothers,” and “The Power of the Dog.” Our current odds indicate that “Dune” (16/5) will take the prize, followed in order of likelihood by “The Power of the Dog” (19/5), “Encanto” (9/2), “Don’t Look Up” (9/2), and “Parallel Mothers” (9/2).
Four of this year’s five composers are previous nominees, with Hans Zimmer standing out from the rest with a dozen bids to his name, the first of which was for “Rain Man” (1989). He triumphed on his second outing for “The Lion King” (1995) and has since earned notices for “The Preacher’s Wife” (1997), “As Good as It Gets” (1998), “The Prince of Egypt” (1999), “The Thin Red Line” (1999), “Gladiator” (2001), “Sherlock Holmes” (2010), “Inception” (2011), “Interstellar” (2015), and “Dunkirk” (2018).

“And the Oscar goes to …” A hushed pause permeates throughout the Dolby Theatre, followed by the familiar sounds of an envelope being eagerly torn open. A knowing smile, and the words “Hans Zimmer! ‘Dune!'” are called out, followed by raucous applause and a standing ovation. A joyous celebration overtakes the auditorium. The Oscar orchestra begins to play Zimmer’s triumphant “Herald of the Change” track from his “Dune” score, as the world-renowned composer bounds up on stage to accept his long overdue second Academy Award.
Doesn’t that sound like a memorable Oscar night moment? While it’s a shame that this year’s show has decided to cut eight categories from being presented live on stage during the broadcast, we will hopefully still see an edited reel of a jubilant Zimmer accepting the Oscar, capping off a successful run of precursor wins in the lead-up to the big night.

When Hans Zimmer won his only Oscar in March 1995, Bill Clinton was President of the United States, Wolfgang Petersen‘s action pandemic thriller “Outbreak” was the number one film at the box office and NBC’s “ER” was America’s most popular TV show.
So let me get this straight. One of (if not the) most prolific and acclaimed film composers of the 21st century has only triumphed at the Oscars once. That was way back at the 1995 ceremony for his beloved score to Disney’s animated classic “The Lion King.” Despite racking up 10 total nominations since his Oscar debut for “Rain Man” (1988), he hasn’t been able to add another Academy Award to his trophy collection, which currently boasts four Grammys, three Hollywood Music in Media Awards, three Golden Globes and a World Soundtrack Award.
Seriously, academy voters? What does Zimmer need to do to claim that long overdue Oscar bookend?...

“‘Dune’ was the dream I had since I was a 13-year-old kid,” admits acclaimed composer Hans Zimmer. The Oscar winner tapped into his long standing love of Frank Herbert’s seminal science fiction novel to provide an arresting sonic landscape for Denis Villeneuve’s big screen adaptation. Watch the exclusive video interview above.
Zimmer conjured a movie in his head when he read the book as a teen, a vision that remained ambitious and untarnished as the years went by. The composer purposefully refrained from viewing other adaptations of the material. “It was so important to me that this vision I had in my head wouldn’t be blunted,” he explains. When Villeneuve approached him and asked if he had heard of the book, Zimmer felt an instant connection. “I knew just by the way he was asking, knowing him, that he was making the same movie that I was making in my head,...

Mariah Carey and Whitney Huston perform a song from The Prince Of Egypt at the Oscars.
Before implementing the Best Animated Feature category, the Academy gave out three special awards over six decades honoring individual achievements in the art of feature-length animation – Snow White and the Seven Dwarves, Who Framed Roger Rabbit?, and Toy Story were the honorees. The July 19 shuttering of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s production of Cinderella just hours ahead of its world premiere in London is the latest major setback to that city’s once-thriving theater industry, decimated by the pandemic. A strict government contact-tracing program has led to a string of high-profile show closings, The Prince of Egypt and Hairspray among them. Closely watching the fallout unfolding across the pond are the producers, performers and publicists who keep Broadway alight, all of them hoping to avoid the same fate once the Great White Way begins to fully reopen come September.

Judging by the roles which made him one of America’s most famous movie stars, you’d be forgiven for not knowing Val Kilmer was also the youngest actor ever accepted into prestige New York drama school Juilliard. A budding playwright and Shakespearean actor when young, Kilmer’s loftier ideas about the world never quite became clear in the generally schlocky parts he became famous for. He knows this.
Val is in large part an attempt by Kilmer to correct the record, even if he’s now too frail to fully explore the side of acting which first enticed him. He handed over hundreds of hours of home movie footage to directors Leo Scott and Ting Poo, insisting the finished product play at the Cannes Film Festival.
Well, he got that wish. Val has been met with a positive reception and has become an unlikely hot ticket, a bit like...

This is a short film you don't want to miss! Bird Karma is an animated short made in the traditional hand-drawn way, without any 3D CGI or rendering. The film is written and directed by veteran animator William Salazar, who has worked for many years for Disney and DreamWorks Animation as a supervising animator on many of their films (from The Prince of Egypt to Kung Fu Panda). Bird Karma was eventually made by DreamWorks Animation in their shorts program, and it originally debuted in 2018, but hasn't really been given a chance to shine. Mostly because it's a very dark short film about a greedy bird who learns his lesson the hard way. The official synopsis for Bird Karma sums it up nicely: A tale of a long-legged bird's journey of blissful joy, inescapable greed and the accidental discovery of the consequences when too much is not enough. Of course,...

This story about Diane Warren first appeared in the Down to the Wire issue of TheWrap’s awards magazine.
When she landed a nomination this year for writing the song “Io sì (Seen)” from “The Life Ahead,” Diane Warren extended her own record for Oscar success: She’s now been nominated for songwriting 12 times over five different decades, from 1987 to 2021, albeit without ever winning.
“How cool is it that the greatest composers and songwriters on the planet choose my songs to be in the top five, you know?” she said. “It’s a big deal, and I don’t take it for granted for a second.”
A pause. “Would I like to win? Yeah, that would be really nice.”
Warren gave TheWrap a guided tour to all 12 of her Oscar nominations.

The theater industry’s pandemic-shortened season seems to have opened up the Grammy playing field for cast albums, as only two of the six just-announced nominees for the 2021 awards represent the usually-dominant Broadway.
The two Broadway cast albums included in today’s nominations for Best Musical Theater Album are David Byrne’s American Utopia on Broadway and Jagged Little Pill, the musical consisting of Alanis Morissette songs. Two London cast albums were nominated, as were two from Off Broadway.
Last year, all five nominees in the category were Broadway productions (Hadestown won), while the year before Broadway accounted for four of the five nominees, with TV’s Jesus Christ Superstar Live in Concert filling out the category (Broadway’s The Band’s Visit won). Previous years show a similar pro-Broadway pattern.

In 1998, Chapman became the first woman to direct an animated feature from a major studio, thanks to DreamWorks Animation’s “The Prince of Egypt,” which followed her work writing such animated Disney classics as “The Lion King,” “Beauty and the Beast,” and “The Hunchback of Notre Dame.”
Fresh off bowing her “Come Away” at Sundance, it was reported that Chapman was already teeing up her next project: a live-action hybrid feature based on Claribel Ortega’s YA novel “Ghost Squad,” but in a recent interview, the filmmaker told IndieWire she’s “kind of stepped away” from that project during the pandemic. “I decided to take...
