Two of the most impressive films I’ve seen this year fall into the science fiction genre. The first being the South African “District 9” from Neill Blomkamp and now “Pandorum” under the skilled hand of director Christian Alvart. This was a film I was eager to view since first coming across it and, although I had great expectations, they were easily surpassed. I find that the film is a clever mixture of various potent films in the same genre with elements of 1997’s gory “Event Horizon” by Paul W.S. Anderson, the Barry Levinson film “Sphere” of 1998 and the exceptional 2005 cave horror “The Descent” from Neil Marshall. »

By choice or not, Halle Berry has stayed on the outskirts of Hollywood's radar in the last few years, appearing in just two relatively low-profile films, with a third indie still awaiting release. The folks behind the "Twilight" franchise, conversely, are at the epicenter of the pop culture zeitgeist.
Variety is reporting that the thriller "Dark Tide" will have Berry and two "Twilight" producers, Marty Bowen and Wyck Godfrey, joining forces. Nothing's set yet — the Oscar-winner is still in those mysterious "advance talks" — but if everything works out, Berry will sign on to play a diving instructor who suffers a near-fatal accident with a great white shark and then decides — screw it! — to head back to the ocean.
The script comes from newbie Amy Sorlie, a screenwriter and journalist who — if her Twitter account is an accurate representation — is a committed beach bum based in Los Angeles. Clark Johnson, a »

An interesting story about the one-and-only Steven Spielberg has popped up today on Variety. They're reporting that Spielberg is "seriously considering" directing a project tentatively called Matt Helm. Helm is based on a series of 27 novels written by Donald Hamilton about a government agent whose mission is to take down enemy agents. While the novels were set in the post-wwii Cold War era, the current script is set in the present. The latest draft of the script, written by Paul Attanasio (Sphere, The Sum of All Fears, The Good German), was what sparked Spielberg's recent interest in the project. I like the sound of it so far. The reason why Spielberg isn't confirmed for this yet is because Matt Helm is one of the (many) projects that were left behind at Paramount when DreamWorks split from the company late last year. Therefore, if Spielberg were to come on and direct, »

When we announced back in February that Total Recall was being rebooted, no writer or directed was attached yet. However, Columbia has now hired Kurt Wimmer to write the remake. Wimmer previously wrote Sphere, The Thomas Crown Affair, The Recruit, and Street Kings, and both wrote and directed Equilibrium and Ultraviolet. Producer Neal Moritz is developing this remake as a contemporary adaptation of the movie based on the Philip K. Dick story "We Can Remember It for You Wholesale." Columbia secured remake rights from Miramax, which has the option to co-finance the project when it's ready to shoot. There's nothing really in Wimmer's filmography that makes me feel confident that it's him who is writing this. Sure, Equilibrium is a fun movie, but the writing wasn't that great. The original Total Recall was directed by Paul Verhoeven, who is responsible for a lot of the crazy visuals in it. I'm »

If you're like me, you're probably wondering why there is a Total Recall remake in development at all right now, but alas, this is the world we live in. Producer Neal Moritz (The Fast and the Furious) has his work cut out for him if he expects to find a way to improve upon the original, and somehow make people forget about the presence of Arnold Schwarzenegger and the style of director Paul Verhoeven. According to Variety [1], the project has just landed a writer in the form of Kurt Wimmer, who previously wrote and directed the films Equilibrium and Ultraviolet. He also wrote screenplays for Sphere, The Thomas Crown Affair, The Recruit, and more recently, Salt starring Angelina Jolie. So this is the part where everyone debates whether Equilibrium was actually any good. To me, it is easily the best thing Wimmer has done so far, but also heavily flawed and a bit ham-fisted. »

Why Columbia, why? Director Paul Verhoeven’s sci-fi classic “Total Recall” doesn’t really scream for a remake, but that’s exactly what we’re getting. It’s old news, I know. That doesn’t mean I’ve accepted it though.
Now Kurt Wimmer has been tapped to deliver a script, according to a report in Variety. Wimmer is no stranger to sci-fi, having previously written “Equilibrium,” “Ultraviolet” and “Sphere.” Not exactly the most inspiring resumè, I know, but at least “Sphere” and “Equilibrium” — the two out of those I’ve seen — contain some interesting ideas. The heavily “Matrix”-inspired “Equilibrium” boasts some impressive action, including a standout pistol whipping fight scene. And yes, that is Christian Bale.
Both the original “Total Recall” and the coming remake are based on Philip K. Dick’s story “We Can Remember It For You Wholesale,” though Variety describes the new version as a “contemporized adaptation. »

Columbia Pictures remake of the 1990 Arnold Schwarzenegger sci-fi flick, Total Recall, is still moving forward, with the studio bringing on Kurt Wimmer (The Thomas Crown Affair, Sphere) to pen the screenplay. Wimmer has been working with the studio on Salt, the Phillip Noyce-directed espionage thriller starring Angelina Jolie. Wimmer wrote the story for that film and shares screen credit with Brian Helgeland. Wimmer also co-wrote the F. Gary Gray-directed Law Abiding Citizen, which stars Jamie Foxx and Gerard Butler, for the Film Department. Total Recall was resurrected for remake earlier this year by the studio and producer Neal Moritz and his Original Films banner. The film will be a contemporized adaptation of the science fiction saga based on the Philip K. Dick story "We Can Remember It for You Wholesale." The original story centers on a man haunted by a recurring dream of journeying to Mars who buys »

HarperCollins is getting ready to publish two new novels written by the late author Michael Crichton, who died of cancer last year at 66. He was known for such hits as "Jurassic Park" and "ER." The action adventure "Pirate Latitudes" is set in Jamaica in 1665 and revolves around plans by a notorious pirate named Hunter and the governor of Jamaica to raid a Spanish galleon filled with treasure. The novel was written before Crichton's death and was discovered in his files by an assistant. HarperCollins plans a first printing of 1 million copies, with the novel set to hit stores on November 24th. The other book is a yet-to-be-titled technological thriller that was left unfinished by Crichton. It will be completed based on the writer's notes and released late next year. An author has not yet been hired to finish the work. Creative Artists Agency is handling the film and TV rights of the books. »
