Dr. George A. Harris: No decision is easy, Sue. It only looks that way when you're young. When you're older, everything is complicated. There is no black and white, only gray.

"Coma" is one of those movies that I watched over and over and over again on HBO when I was a kid. I think I watched it 12 times over Christmas break one year. Anyway, this suspense-thriller has a good, workable gimmick, and the cold atmosphere of a hospital is effective. What makes the film so likeable and enjoyable is Genevieve Bujold in the lead role. In contrast to everything else, including the other performers, she is very warm, and her vulnerability is extremely ingratiating. I wonder if this was a purposeful effect, or if they just had inexpressive actors surrounding her. In any case, it works well for this movie. This quality also gives the movie extra suspense. Bujold is very human, interacting with people who don't seem quite there, and sometimes it seems possible that she really is all by herself... I felt as much happy relief as she did when she ran into that intern friend of hers. And she's soooo smart! It's exciting to watch a character have to overcome obstacles (in her case, all the other characters), and use their own specialness to figure things out. Michael Douglas gives a very, very flat performance. And you can tell Jerry Goldsmith did the score. Parts of it sound just like "The Omen".
