When it comes to evaluating the financial performance of top movies, it isn’t about what a film grosses at the box office. The true tale is told when production budgets, P&a, talent participations and other costs collide with box office grosses and ancillary revenues from VOD to DVD and TV. To get close to that mysterious end of the equation, Deadline is repeating our Most Valuable Blockbuster tournament for 2019, using data culled by seasoned and trusted sources.

While all of the major studios mull over whether to release their big summer movies on streaming services due to theaters closing because of the coronavirus pandemic, it’s a perfect time for small, low-budget films to have their moment. Preferably in the horror genre. Which is why I give you, The Jack in the Box.
We recently got a trailer for Abominable, which is about a group of poor folks who get picked off one by one by a crazed yeti. And before that there was Uncaged, about a killer lion. But now we come to The Jack in the Box, not to be confused with the popular fast food chain.
The movie follows a group of people who discover an old Jack in the Box toy. After its donation to a museum, an employee named Casey begins to believe that the toy is responsible for the deaths of his fellow co-workers.

Exclusive: Michael Bay has set his Bay Films to a multiyear first look deal with Sony Pictures to produce both film and TV projects. The deal was being worked on and was mostly done in January, before the town shut down. Last week saw the first fresh film auction with the Ryan Gosling-attached adaptation of Project Hail Mary, the novel by The Martian author Andy Weir which MGM won. This is the first overall film/TV deal to commence since then, as hopefully the business begins to show signs of life.
Deal puts Bay back at the studio where he made his directorial debut on 1995’s Bad Boys. He reprised as director of the sequel, and in the most recent installment, Bad Boys For Life, you can glimpse him in a tip of the hat cameo as a wedding Mc.

Some stories of real-life heroism beg to be told, while films like “Minamata” fall victim to good intentions. Director Andrew Levitas’ mopey drama recounts war photographer W. Eugene Smith’s seminal expose of mercury poisoning in the eponymous Japanese fishing village, and certainly that 1972 photo essay deserves a feature-length salute.
However, Here and there, “Minamata” tells a bracing story of corporate malfeasance and bracing advocacy for the underclass, but even the occasional poignant observation can’t salvage a movie trying this hard to tug every heartstring at its disposal.
The tale of Smith’s final, crowning achievement in a storied career holds plenty of appeal in the opening act. New York, 1971: Smith’s already out of the game. Once a celebrated WWII photographer, he’s devolved into a hard-drinking cyclone of resentment and self-pity. Estranged from his adult kids and strapped for cash, he begs Life magazine editor Bob...

Based on the novel by Erich Maria Remarque, the screenplay is by Ian Stokell and Lesley Paterson. It never hurts to approach a holiday from a different angle.
Cupid appeared to be murdering sailors on NCIS Season 17 Episode 15.
Of course, that wasn't the case, but the truth was even stranger.
It even involved Phil Brooks, Gibbs' only non-work friend, last seen causing chaos for Gibbs and Fornell on NCIS Season 16 Episode 4.
Don Lake, who plays Phil, made his mark as part of Christopher Guest's ensemble in such satirical works as Waiting for Guffman, Best in Show, and A Mighty Wind.
That's why it's enjoyable to have him providing some offbeat humor occasionally on NCIS.
Gibbs needs to laugh like everyone else, and Phil certainly fills that role for him, without ever meaning to.
This time out, Phil had found love again, through a dating app.
The only problem was that the woman he was dating, a Jag lawyer, was connected to three dead men, two of...

Christopher McQuarrie has become Tom Cruise’s muse. The director/actor partnership has been quite fruitful ever since Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol when McQuarrie helped rewrite the script. Following that, he worked with Cruise on Edge of Tomorrow, Jack Reacher, The Mummy and the upcoming Top Gun: Maverick, among others.
And while the first five Mission: Impossible films were helmed by a different director each time, McQuarrie got behind the camera for Rogue Nation, which saw the series make a shift to become more connected. He’s also the franchise’s first returning director as well after bringing us the excellent Mission: Impossible – Fallout and has now agreed to helm Mission: Impossible 7 and 8 back-to-back.
Most franchises tend to decline in quality as they go on, but this one has been the complete opposite. You could even argue that since McQuarrie came onboard in Ghost Protocol, the series has gone...

Before the world premiere of Bad Hair at Sundance, Justin Simien stepped out on in front of a packed house at the Ray Theater and gushed about his love for films like Carrie and Rosemary’s Baby. That said, his latest feature can be described as many things: a psychological thriller, a satire and a horror, but he reveals that he made this film with one group of people in mind: black women.
In the film, he names characters after the strong black women in his life. His mom Anna, and his aunts Virgie, Edna and Zora. And with these characters, he wanted to “shine a light on the absurdities we are living in reality sometimes.”
With that, he used one of his favorite genres, his culture and personal life to tell a story that is more than just a horror film. “I hope I can do this genre that I...

As we fast approach the WWE annual event known as Royal Rumble, it’s a good time to look back on all the previous shows. I’ve been doing just that. I’ve seen each event countless times, but I always enjoy going back in time to re-watch Royal Rumble shows, good or bad, from the past. Beginning in 1988, it was Pat Patterson who came up with the concept of the Royal Rumble match, and it’s been a hugely popular match and Pay-per View ever since. Fans love the idea of not knowing who is coming out next in the big thirty-man (and now thirty-woman) match. Surprises often occur, returns happen and the good guys and bad guys of the company all hit the ring for a big brawl to determine who will go to WrestleMania to face the Champ. The stipulation of winning a shot at the World...

We've already run down our favorite action/adventure series and favorite procedurals, but now we're looking at a decade's worth of favorite relationship-focused programming. It's kind of crazy how few shows are created around relationships.
Here is a reminder that we have almost two dozen favorites lists, and since we couldn't showcase every show on every list, we parsed them out a bit to make it more fun.
And these lists are not in any particular order. They're in the order the entries were received by TV Fanatic staff, so don't read into them!
To qualify, a show that began in another decade had to be airing during the decade, run a larger number of seasons from 2010 through 2019 if it started before 2010 or run the entire decade. Here we go!

The return to Hope Valley was perfect!
When Calls the Heart Season 7 Episode 0 serves as our first look at the upcoming season (which seems too far away) and provided a lot for us to ponder while we wait for it to begin.
It's hard to believe it's been a year since Little Jack was born and even longer since we lost Jack.
Elizabeth has always had the support of Hope Valley, and she needed it more than ever as she reached another milestone without her beloved Jack.
Jack never even knew that Elizabeth was pregnant and that somehow makes Jack's growth even more bittersweet. Elizabeth is celebrating another holiday without her love, and something as significant as Jack's first birthday brought him to everyone's mind.
Of course, Elizabeth had a lot to keep her busy and to keep her mind from drifting too far into her memories.

Looking to attract younger viewers to Disney+, Marvel Studios' Kevin Feige has confirmed Marvel Comics preteen super-powered team-up"Power Pack" "...is a property we've been interested in for a long time":
"For many years because we wanted to do something for families, something that's a little younger,", said Feige.
" 'Ant-Man' has kind of become that franchise, certainly with 'Ant-Man and the Wasp', but 'Power Pack' still is one of the many things that we discuss..."

“Twin Peaks” may or may not return for a fourth season at some point in the next 25 years, but that doesn’t mean fans can’t return to it in a new way. Showtime and Collider Games have announced that “Twin Peaks Vr” will premiere at the upcoming Festival of Disruption in Los Angeles. The experience will feature virtual locations from both the original and new iterations of David Lynch’s iconic series, which managed the impressive feat of ending on an even more open-ended note when it returned for 18 episodes last year than the first finale did in 1991.
“Utilizing lines and sounds from the show itself, players will travel to Glastonbury Grove, only to end up in the puzzling Red Room. Fans of the series will follow in the footsteps of Special Agent Dale Cooper and try to make their way back into the life they left behind,” reads a statement from Collider Games.

Patton tells Rolling Stone their performance for Disruption will be a “Lynch-heavy” set, including reimaginations of some of the director’s iconic, melancholy themes.
“When we played together, before, basically, it’s just been mostly improvised sort of stuff,” says Patton. “So, I let him do his thing, I do my thing...

Here’s how profoundly director Edward Berger was affected by the Patrick Melrose novels: He remembers the exact bookstore where he discovered them. “In 1993 or something I walked into St. Mark’s Bookshop [in New York] and looked for a book and stumbled upon the first book of Patrick Melrose, ‘Never Mind.’ And I just devoured it.”
With every new release of Edward St. Aubyn’s work, he “just gobbled them up,” so when he heard that the books were in development for a potential series, he immediately put himself up for the job of bringing them to the screen. After meeting with the producers, Showtime and Sky, he finally got the offer, to which his reply was simple: “That would be a dream.”
Born in Germany, Berger has shifted between film and TV for years, with recent credits including “Deutschland 83,” “The Terror,” and the independent film “Jack,” a Golden Berlin Bear...

For Edward Berger, getting the chance to direct “Patrick Melrose” was “the biggest luck of my life.” Based on a series of novels by Edward St. Aubyn, the show follows the life journey of the title character (Benedict Cumberbatch), who was abused as a child, struggles with addiction and heartbreak, and seeks redemption. Berger directed all five episodes of the Showtime limited series, and he considers Melrose “one of the most interesting characters” ever written. Watch our exclusive video interview with Berger above.

Lars von Trier is back, and not everyone is too thrilled about it. The controversial filmmaker returned to the Cannes Film Festival on May 14 to debut his serial killer drama “The House That Jack Built,” but the movie’s extreme graphic violence against women and children caused walkouts during the screening and severe outrage in the hours after the film’s debut. It’s hardly the first time von Trier has shocked viewers, but the director tells University Posts that he doesn’t see anything wrong with depicting graphic violence and nudity.
“I’m against censorship of any kind,” von Trier said. “My opinion is that if you can think it, you should be able to show it.”
Von Trier explained that the reasoning for his anti-censorship views is due in part to the way he grew up, especially when it comes to depicting nudity. When the filmmaker was a child,...

Baobab Studios will premiere “Chapter One” of its immersive animated experience “Crow: The Legend” at the Cannes Film Festival today, May 12. The film will take over all five of the virtual reality screening booths at Next, the fest’s innovation hub.

John Legend stars as Crow and also serves as executive producer. Baobab recently announced that Oprah Winfrey joined the cast, which also features Tye Sheridan, Diego Luna, Constance Wu, Lisa Koshy, and Native rights activist and tribal elder Randy Edmonds.

Roman Polanski felt “blindsided” by the decision of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences to expel him, and plans to appeal.
“We plan to ask the Academy to follow its own rules which is to give Roman 10 days notice to present his side,” Polanski’s attorney Harland Braun said in a statement to TheWrap. “We were prepared but were blindsided by their violation of their own standards. What did the 56 members review??”
On Tuesday, the Academy voted to expel Bill Cosby and Polanski in accordance with the organization’s Standard of Conduct.

“The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences’ Board of Governors met on Tuesday night (May 1) and has voted to expel actor Bill Cosby and director Roman Polanski from its membership in accordance with the organization’s Standards of Conduct,” read the statement. “The Board continues to encourage ethical standards that require members to uphold the Academy’s values of respect for human dignity.”
Polanski was expelled 15 years after his film “The Pianist” took home Oscars for Best Director, Best Adapted Screenplay and Best Actor at the 75th Academy Awards. The film was nominated for Best Picture, but lost to “Chicago.”
Polanski was arrested and charged with raping 13-year-old Samantha Geimer in 1977. He pled guilty and was imprisoned for 42 days, after which he was released and put on probation as part of a plea bargain. When Polanski learned that a judge was planning to revoke the plea deal, the director fled Paris before the sentencing.

Cosby has never won an Oscar but he was an Academy member. His film credits include “Hickey & Boggs,” “Uptown Saturday Night,” “Ghost Dad,” “The Meteor Man” and “Jack.”
On Wednesday, Cosby’s name was removed from the website of the Television Academy. The comedian was recently found guilty of three counts of aggravated indecent assault in his retrial over accusations made by former Temple University employee Andrea Constand.
Cosby had maintained that his interaction with Constand was consensual and that he had given her Benadryl in an effort to help her relax.
A spokesperson for Cosby has not yet responded to TheWrap’s request for comment on whether Cosby plans to appeal as well. The Academy has not yet responded to TheWrap’s request for comment.
