While the mainline series that is Dark Nights: Metal is allowing for Scott Snyder to display his vast knowledge of the DC Universe, we can’t help but love how the various tie-ins that’ll hit stands this fall have an Elseworlds kind of flavor to them. Well, there’s that and the fact that each of them spotlight various evil versions of Batman.
To date, we’ve been offered closer looks at a sinister-looking Flash-Batman amalgam, The Red Death, a sweet mashup with Green Lantern, The Dawnbreaker, and a twisted Batman-Joker hybrid known as The Batman Who Laughs, the latter of which may ultimately prove to get the most attention. Regardless, each of these threats emanating from the Dark Multiverse are bound to turn more than a few heads – if the subject of today’s discussion doesn’t crush them first, that is.

Some sad news to begin 2015: the character actor Edward Herrmann, perhaps best known for his patriarchal role in seven years of Gilmore Girls, died on New Year's Eve in New York aged 71.Herrmann was born in Washington, grew up in Michigan, went to university in Pennsylvania and studied acting in London. Starting out in theatre, he made his Broadway debut in 1972 in Michael Weller's Moonchildren, and won a Tony Award for his performance in George Bernard Shaw's Mrs. Warren's Profession four years later.Moving into television he had early roles in Beacon Hill and Valley Forge, and played President Franklin D. Roosevelt for the first time in Eleanor And Franklin in 1976. He would reprise Roosevelt the following year in Eleanor And Franklin: The White House Years; in Annie in 1982; and hosted the documentary Fdr: A Presidency Revealed in 2005. He also played unnamed presidents in TV movies Pandora's Clock and Atomic Train.

There, he hopes he can get a grip on himself before whoever or whatever is responsible for the strange coma sweeping Smallville makes an appearance.
Superman is a character with a long history behind him. As such, it is difficult to find any storyline that is genuinely original, but even this doesn’t excuse the predictability on display here. The idea of a plan hinging on turning the world against the one person capable of saving it is so clichéd and over-used, it’s amazing to see it still used. Likewise, the concept of Superman struggling to remain decent and just in the face...
