The apocalypse goes "1970s pop sci-fi" in The Arcadian

24 November 2009 11:38 AM, PST | QuietEarth.us | See recent QuietEarth news »

The Arcadian is an upcoming post-apocalyptic adventure that follows actor J. Larose (of Saw III, Saw IV, and Repo! The Genetic Opera fame) as an enigmatic warrior called "The Lighthouse Keeper" who goes on a quest for "revenge and redemption in a strange future world" we're told is "reminiscent of wild 1970s pop sci-fi."

Inspired in equal parts by samurai movies, rock operas, and underground comics, we're told that the visual world of The Arcadian will be an homage to the work of underground illustrators and be something quite unique due to the fact that it was shot entirely on a Canon 5D Mark II camera - chosen for its unparalleled low-light sensitivity.

The Arcadian has just wrapped principle photography and is heading into an intense round of post. It is due Q2, 2010.

To make up for the fact that we have no detailed plot synopsis yet, we've included a »

Waterworld Blu-ray Review

15 November 2009 9:14 AM, PST | Collider.com | See recent Collider.com news »

Hollywood has figured something out, which is that even if you spend a shit-ton of money on a film, that in and of itself can attract an audience. It’s hard to look at the relative success of Waterworld at the box office as anything more than rubbernecking on the freeway, and it was worthwhile for many who had grown tired of Kevin Costner. My review of Waterworld after the jump.

Though somewhat stiff at times, Costner was the leading man of the late 80’s, even more so than Tom Cruise, with his sexual charisma and aw-shucks charm. No Way Out, The Untouchables, Bull Durham, and Field of Dreams said “hey world, check me out.” Then came Dances with Wolves, which won him a couple of Oscars, defeating the (now seen as obviously superior) Goodfellas. Some resentment sets in with success and the oddball A Perfect World, and the terrible »

Top 7 Movies That Make The End of the World Sound Hilarious

13 November 2009 2:18 PM, PST | The Scorecard Review | See recent Scorecard Review news »

We start the Top 7. You finish the Top 10.

Somehow, the end of the world has become a form of entertainment. Instead of being scared out of our wits of apocalyptic thoughts, we enjoy plunking down $10 to watch them become realized by big budget blockbusters. Hollywood serves it up, however: whole cities are destroyed, hundreds of thousands of people die, the fate of mankind is brought into question, and sometimes, Randy Quaid becomes our savior.

Which brings us to a certain theme that has been continued through a legacy of doomsday movies – they’re funny as hell. More unintentional than not, these movies are loaded with goofy movie milestones that make the blockbusters seem like gargantuan scaled jokes, with their characters, dialogue, and special moments serving as a type of punch line. Many disaster movies seem to be plagued by an air of idiocy that moves from one big budget movie to the next, »

'2012' Is Old News: Hollywood Apocalypses Through The Decades

13 November 2009 1:00 PM, PST | MTV Movies Blog | See recent MTV Movies Blog news »

Today, Roland Emmerich's latest world-ending epic, "2012," hits theaters. John Cusack, Amanda Peet and their pals race around the world, beholding one scene of devastation after another as an eco-catastrophe tears the planet apart. The story's premise is built on the belief that the apocalypse will come in the year 2012, as foretold by the Mayan calendar.

Unfortunately for Mr. Emmerich, Hollywood has already trashed the lovely planet Earth roughly a bazillion times over. From viral outbreaks to zombie uprisings, global warming to alien incursions... the people of this world have seen, suffered through and been almost completely annihilated by any threat you can imagine. Looking back through Hollywood history, the world was wiped out countless times, and long before the year 2012.

The '60s

For any movies where the time of the apocalypse isn't specified, it's a safe bet that the action occurs in the "present day" in which the movie was made. »

Is Avatar Too Expensive To Be Successful?

9 November 2009 9:53 PM, PST | ScreenRant.com | See recent Screen Rant news »

Wallets shook in the pant seats of moviegoers (and likely more than a few filmmakers) worldwide this week, as The New York Times released a report tallying the financial costs of James Cameron’s upcoming sci-fi epic, Avatar – and man, just looking at the raw numbers, it’s hard not to start having flashbacks to 1995 when Kevin Costner’s Waterwold topped the hill as the most expensive hype-and-flop flick ever made (did I just horribly date myself with that comment, Btw?).

Avatar will reportedly cost 20th Century Fox, James Cameron and all subsequent investors a combined total of $500 million to make and market, leaving, well, Most Of Us wondering if the film – based on a (semi) original story imagined by Cameron) – has a hope of being a box office success story, or the fate of being the next Waterworld.

Now, before I hype this all up as some kind of “all or broke” type scenario, »

Dennis Hopper Diagnosed With Prostate Cancer

30 October 2009 7:02 AM, PDT | Atomic Popcorn | See recent Atomic Popcorn news »

This is some very upsetting news.

It appears that actor Dennis Hopper has been diagnosed with prostate cancer. Earlier this month, there were some reports that Hopper had been rushed to the hospital for an undisclosed reason. Now, according to the BBC, Hopper is entering a special program for treatment in California. The initial stay in the hospital was reportedly due to flu-like symptoms and dehydration.

Hopper has had a long and varied history in cinema, ranging back to his friendship in his youth with actor James Dean. He went from playing bit parts to writing, directing, and starring in Easy Rider, which many regard as one of the formative films of 1960s and 1970s cinema. Since then, he has played many memorable roles in over 200 productions, ranging from villains in Speed and Waterworld to a psychotic photographer in Francis Ford Coppola’s Apocalypse Now and as Frank Booth in Blue Velvet. »

Costner's Swine Flu Worries

29 October 2009 5:06 AM, PDT | WENN | See recent WENN news »

Kevin Costner is so terrified of catching swine flu, he has barred his family from visiting him on tour with his band Modern West.

The Waterworld star's group is currently trekking around Europe - but Costner's wife Christine isn't among the adoring crowds the band is playing to.

The actor ordered her to keep their two young sons at home in the U.S. to minimise the risk of picking up a bout of influenza.

Costner says, "It is unusual that my family are not here because they usually are always with me.

"But I have been worried about swine flu and didn't want my small children with me on this trip." »

Waterworld - Blu-ray Review

22 October 2009 7:30 AM, PDT | Monsters and Critics | See recent Monsters and Critics news »

Talk about confusing. Firstly, Waterworld was supposed to be a hit. It wasn.t. In fact it became a way to describe a bomb film. Secondly, Universal unwisely uses the box art for this new Blu-ray release that they used on the extended cut DVD release but doesn.t put on the extended cut. Help, I.m drowning. In the distant future, the polar ice caps have melted and flooded the world. Dry land is a thing of the past and humanity has taken up seaward existences. The Mariner (Kevin Costner) has come to a man made floating city to try and sell a jar of dirt, a valuable commodity in this watery time. During his bargaining it.s discovered that »

'Transformers: Revenge Of The Fallen' Rolls Out, 'Blood' Leaks And More, In The DVD Report For October 20

20 October 2009 3:00 PM, PDT | MTV Movies Blog | See recent MTV Movies Blog news »

It's big, it's loud and now the bonafide monster film of the year is rolling out on store shelves. Michael Bay's "Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen" made gobs of money at the box office and now it almost singled-handedly owns the release calendar this week. But a few other titles do manage to break through the shape-shifting pack, and we'll cover them all in this DVD Report for Tuesday, October 20, 2009.

There's not much purpose in rehashing the plot to "Revenge of the Fallen," the follow-up to the bombastic intergalactic war between the Autobots and the Decepticons. Anyone interested in the DVD and Blu-ray has already seen the film, so the only thing really worth discussing are whether the presentation and special features make it a must-own. Well, if you count yourself a fan of the robot-friendly franchise, then it's a definite yes. Like the first film's home video release, »

15 October 2009 3:37 PM, PDT | HollywoodChicago.com | See recent HollywoodChicago.com news »

Chicago – The Blu-Ray Round-Up is back with this week’s collection of HD titles that may not get the buzz of something like the latest Sandra Bullock romantic comedy or what Sam Raimi brought back from Hell but could be just what you’re looking for at the mall this weekend. A few modern horror movies, a notable box office bust, and a beloved BBC show highlight this week’s list. Pick your favorite.

Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein,” “Wolf,” and “Red Dwarf: Back To Earth - The Director’s Cut” was released on October 6th, 2009.

DVD Playhouse—October 2009

By

Allen Gardner

The Wizard Of Oz 70th Anniversary Ultimate Collector’S Edition (Warner Bros.) A true highlight in digital restoration technology, Warner Bros. restoration of the 1939 classic is cause for celebration. The Technicolor of the late ‘30s looks as though it was shot yesterday, and is especially stunning on Blu-ray, which was produced by scanning each of the film’s original Technicolor camera negatives using 8K resolution. From this scan, a final “capture” master was created in 4K, yielding twice the resolution seen in the master utilized for the film’s previous DVD release. Judy Garland’s Dorothy is charming as ever, and the entire cast: Ray Bolger, Bert Lahr, Jack Haley and Margaret Hamilton as the Wicked Witch, are all stellar. Four disc set bonuses include: Sing-along track; Documentaries and featurettes; Two 1914 silent films produced by Oz author L. Frank Baum, based on his stories »

Reed’s Bargain Bin: Babylon A.D.

14 September 2009 6:20 AM, PDT | FilmJunk | See recent FilmJunk news »

Reed’s Bargain Bin [1] is a recurring column where Reed Farrington tells us about a movie he bought for under $5, and whether or not he regrets the purchase. Even though Film Junk followers would probably prefer to read current Tiff film reviews than a review of an older science fiction film, I have decided to submit this review of “Babylon A.D.” And at the risk of further enforcing the view that I have a poor taste in films, my review is generally a favorable one in contrast to popular opinion. I was aware that this film did poorly at the box office, but I didn’t realize how many bad reviews this film received until after I had watched the film and checked out the reviews on the Internet. The reason why I watched this film is that I try to watch all the high profile science fiction movies regardless of audience reception. »

Boos! & Whoop-doos!: The Summer Movie Smack-Down!

28 August 2009 10:31 AM, PDT | MovieWeb | See recent MovieWeb news »

Summer movies? Boo! No, wait...Whoop-doo!

I think its both safe and fair to say this: Not one more movie ever needs to be made. Ever. Again. We've used up our fresh water well. We've gone to the depths and come back with the bends. Since its inception as an art form, each proceeding decade has been known for reinventing cinema on some evolutionary level. Then we hit the 80s, which was our last bastion of hope for imaginative storytelling. The 90s came on like a long slow drip of boring ineptitude. Or biggest hits were so-called duck press endeavors that managed to regurgitate everything that came before them. While Forrest Gump helped utilize and establish never before seen special effects, it was nothing more than a collage of past decades as reflected through the artistry of film. The same can be said of Quentin Tarantino's Pulp Fiction (though »

Miley Cyrus Heads Home, Tyson Returns & More In Our DVD Report For Tuesday, August 18

18 August 2009 10:00 AM, PDT | MTV Movies Blog | See recent MTV Movies Blog news »

It's a rare occurrence when Miley Cyrus and Mike Tyson share a spotlight, but that's the way it shakes out as both celebs see their biggest release in years hit store shelves.

In a rather slow week filled mostly with television box sets, Miley's "Hannah Montana: The Movie" is one of two new wide release films dropping on Blu-ray and DVD (the other being the horror remake of "The Last House On The Left," but what's left said about that?). In the pic, Miley's father drags her back home to give the teen superstar some much-needed Southern-style perspective. While it didn't quite match the hype of her 3-D excursion, the first full-fledged "Hannah Montana" theatrical outing managed to please fans of the Disney series, which I guess is all that counts. The film gets a Deluxe Edition with modest extras including behind-the-scenes footage, cast bloopers, a music video and audio »

Waterworld Washes Onto Blu-ray on October 20th

12 August 2009 5:26 AM, PDT | MovieWeb | See recent MovieWeb news »

You can stop holding your breath. Waterworld is finally getting the Blu-ray treatment on October 20th. Kevin Costner's notoriously over-budget look at an apocalyptic future will wash into stores at a cost of $26.98 Srp. This new high-definition transfer will include the original theatrical version, not the longer version broadcast on network TV that was released on standard DVD late last year.

Imagine a future without dry land. A future where the earth, covered in water, has evolved into a gritty, nautical society held together by determination and ingenuity. The inhabitants of this once-flourishing planet cling to life on incredible floating cities, their existence constantly threatened by Smokers, bands of marauding pirates who roam the featureless surface of what is now known as Waterworld!

Blu-ray to Sail in Kevin Costner's Waterworld

11 August 2009 7:03 PM, PDT | TheHDRoom | See recent TheHDRoom news »

Blu-ray will get a whole lot wetter on October 20 when the Kevin Costner's "Mad Max at Sea" adventure Waterworld completes its journey from defunct HD DVD to "Blu"-er waters. Looking back at Waterworld on HD DVD reveals a bare bones release without a single supplement. Universal Studios Home Entertainment has taken a similar approach with Blu-ray but was kind enough to include the theatrical trailer. Rather than serve up the nearly three-hour extended cut given Blu-ray's spacious disc capacity compared to HD DVD, Universal has chosen to stick with the 2:16 theatrical cut. That decision leaves a lot of extra space, a portion of which has been dedicated to a D-box Motion Control track accompanying a 1.85:1 1080p transfer and 5.1 DTS-hd Master Audio. Universal will likely use the same key art for the Blu-ray edition cover and I'll be sure to pass along that cover as soon as I have it to share. »

The Movie Watcher’s Guide to August 2009

6 August 2009 10:00 PM, PDT | FilmSchoolRejects.com | See recent FilmSchoolRejects news »

The summer's almost over, and so far it's been an incredibly mixed bag movie-wise. Star Trek, The Hangover, and Harry Potter are some of the few deserving wins on the box-office side while most of the supposed summer blockbusters including X-Men Origins: Wolverine, Terminator: Salvation, Bruno, and Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen all failed to make a financial mark (yeah, that last one was just wishful thinking because the movie sucked so much ass). Quality-wise, many of the summer's best films have actually been of the decidedly smaller variety including 500 Days of Summer, The Hurt Locker, Moon, and Away We Go. Which brings us to the final month of summer 2009... August 7th GI Joe: The Rise of Cobra What is it? David Twohy is a veteran of Hollywood genre fare, having tried his hand as screenwriter or writer-director on thrillers of all stripes—on land (The Fugitive, G.I. Jane), by sea (Below, Waterworld), and from outer space (Pitch Black, The Chronicles Of Riddick, The Arrival). He rarely does more than deliver on expectations, but he knows the conventions of genre material enough to exploit them to clever effect. Twohy’s latest effort, A Perfect Getaway, is akin to a magician doing a trick with all the cards face up, asking the audience to trust what they see while he pulls »
