Raven-Symoné has signed a multiyear overall deal with Disney Branded Television that includes a pilot greenlight for a “Raven’s Home” spinoff series titled “Alice in the Palace.”
Disney also announced that “Raven’s Home,” itself a spinoff of “That’s So Raven,” will not return for a seventh season. The sixth and final season aired from April to September 2023.
Under her new overall deal, Raven-Symoné will produce, direct and develop projects across linear and streaming, with a focus on multi-cam comedies, Disney said in a press release. First up is “Alice in the Palace,” which Raven-Symoné will executive produce and direct. Per the logline, “The new series picks up when Alice (Emmy Award-winning actress Mykal-Michelle Harris), Raven’s young cousin, returns to England and reunites with Duchess Clementine (also portrayed by Harris), a young royal who looks exactly like her. Exclusive: Raven-Symoné is extending her relationship with Disney, which she has called home for many years, with a new multi-year overall deal at Disney Branded Television. Under the pact, she will produce, direct, and develop projects across linear and streaming, with a focus on multi-cam comedies.
First off, she will executive produce and direct sitcom Alice in the Palace, which has received a pilot order. It is an Alice-centered spinoff from Raven-Symoné’s Disney Channel multi-camera comedy series Raven’s Home, which will not return for a seventh season. Its most recent Season 6 concluded its run in September 2023.
The deal with Raven-Symoné, which also includes continued acting and hosting opportunities, and the order for Alice in the Palace fits into Disney Branded Television’s strategy of building a new Disney Channel lineup of multi-camera sitcoms. In doing that, the company’s executive team has been leaning into classic Disney Channel IP.

Whoopi Goldberg took a moment this week to spotlight her friendship with Maggie Smith, recalling a time when the British actress offered support amid news that Goldberg’s mother’s health had taken a turn for the worse.
Goldberg told People she was performing in the stage adaptation of Sister Act in London when her late brother, Clyde K. Johnson, called to tell her their mother was on life support following an aneurysm. Smith, who co-starred with Goldberg in the Sister Act films, happened to be visiting the production that day.
“Having Maggie Smith be there, and being able to fall apart and having her say, ‘Listen, my friend. We’ll get you through this. We’ll get you through this. We’ll get you to the hospital so you can get her. Get you back to Berkeley so you can get home,’” Goldberg said.

I think of director Barry Sonnenfeld's "The Addams Family" and "Addams Family Values" the same way I think of director Tim Burton's "Batman" and "Batman Returns." In each case, the first movie operates as more of a test run for what the filmmakers can do with the property they're adapting, whereas the sequels allow them to really let their darkly off-kilter creative sensibilities run wild.
To be sure, 1993's "Addams Family Values" is the zanier of Sonnenfeld's takes on the "Addams Family" franchise, which originated with Charles Addams' original comic panels for The New Yorker dating back to the '30s. While its predecessor has a fairly basic plot, "Values" pits the eponymous clan against a dastardly black widow -- played to camp perfection by Joan Cusack -- who's out to marry and then murder wealthy Uncle Fester (Christopher Lloyd). It's also the film that fully embraces the...

The View hosts just can’t seem to stay out of the headlines. Whoopi Goldberg made headlines today after literally stopping filming to yell at the audience.
Apparently, Goldberg also doubles as The View’s security. Keep reading for all the details, and more The View cast news.
Does anyone actually watch The View to keep abreast in current events? It’s ironic that the hosts of The View sit around a table and gossip every morning, but then they turn in to the day’s gossip.
The View – Hot Topics Gets Interrupted
Goldberg and the cast were having an interesting discussion regarding Donald Trump‘s civil fraud case.
Sunny Hostin was left confused when Whoopi jumped out of her chair and began scolding a man in the audience for filming the women on stage with his personal cell phone.

[Editor’s note: This story was originally published September 2023. It has since been updated ahead of the release of “Immaculate.”]
In the real world, nuns typically lead simple, quiet lives. Taking vows of chastity and obedience in order to fully devote themselves to God, the average nun — be she Roman Catholic, Anglican, Lutheran, or some other denomination — gives up her worldly possessions in exchange for the pursuit of greater spiritual purpose, often spending her life in a monastery or convent and focusing on prayer, charity, and schooling. For some, that’s a fulfilling path, but it’s also maybe not the most interesting story to watch.
And yet onscreen, nuns can be whatever the director wants them to be. They can be the singing, lovable anti-Nazis in “The Sound of Music.” They can be the bawdy and hilarious R&b superstars in “Sister Act.” In some films, like Paul Verhoeven’s “Benedetta,” they spit in the face of those vows of chastity to engage in some sacrilegiously steamy antics.

Paramount+ may have culled a wealth of international originals in the past couple of weeks but that hasn’t stopped it committing to a UK thriller series set in a world where men live under a strict nightly curfew.
Starring Sarah Parish, Doctor Who’s Mandip Gill, Mitchell Robertson and singer Alexandra Burke, Curfew is set in a society where all men live under ‘The Women’s Safety Act’, meaning they are bound by a strict curfew from 7Pm to 7Am every night, with their movements tracked by an ankle tag 24 hours a day. When a woman’s body is discovered, brutally murdered during curfew hours and left on the steps of the Women’s Safety Centre, veteran Police officer Pamela Green believes that a man is responsible. But in a world where men are bound by the curfew system, her theory is rejected.

Update, with video: Whoopi Goldberg has made no secret in recent years of people she’d like to cast in her long-in-the-works Sister Act 3 project, from original Sister costars Jenifer Lewis and Kathy Najimy to Jimmy Fallon, Charlamagne Tha God, Lizzo, Keke Palmer, and Nicki Minaj, and today she added another old friend to the list: Sheryl Lee Ralph.
Ralph, who appeared in 1993’s Sister Act 2: Back in the Habit, seemed delighted if perhaps too overwhelmed with emotion to give an official answer when, during an appearance on today’s The View, Goldberg invited the Abbott Elementary star to take part in both a planned View reunion of Sister Act vets and the hoped-for second sequel to the original 1992 comedy.
“You know, we’re in the process of putting together 3,” Goldberg said toward the end of Ralph’s visit. “Will you come be part of it, whatever it is?...

"If you went into a movie called 'Ace Ventura: Pet Detective' and you were doing the stuff I was doing in that movie, would you be expecting while you were doing that movie that it was going to be huge?" Jim Carrey asked this to radio shock-jock Howard Stern in 1994 shortly after the actor's movie opened unexpectedly atop the box office. Stern bluntly responded with "No" but it was, in fact, a monster hit. It was one of three such hits that Carrey would be a part of that year, making it one of arguably the best years that any actor has had — from a commercial standpoint — in history.

For the second week in a row, Saturday Night Live was littered with special guest appearances. Joining host and musical guest Bad Bunny on last night’s episode were The Rolling Stones frontman Mick Jagger, Lady Gaga, Pedro Pascal, and former SNL cast member Fred Armisen.
Jagger, who previously hosted the show himself in 1978 and 2012, appeared in two sketches alongside Bad Bunny: a spoofing of Sister Act and a sketch in which he and Benito co-starred in a telenovela. Lady Gaga was on hand to introduce Bad Bunny’s performance of “Un Preview,” while Pascal translated the musician’s monologue and later reprised his role in “Protective Moms” (the initial sketch aired earlier this year). Meanwhile, Armisen appeared in a pre-recorded short called “Age of Discovery.”
Other sketches saw Bad Bunny dress up as Shrek with the Please Don’t Destroy guys, and participate in a rap battle opposite Mikey Day.

It’s been 30 years since Winifred Sanderson and her sisters put a spell on fans, and “Hocus Pocus” remains a Halloween classic. So, what are the witchy women up to these days? What about the kids they tormented? Well, at least when it comes to the latter, they aren’t kids anymore.
In fact, you can catch most of them at fan conventions across the country when they aren’t on-screen. Vinessa Shaw, Omri Katz, Thora Birch and Jason Marsden have reunited more than a few times at events in the last few years, as “Hocus Pocus” found its cult following later in its life cycle.
As for the Sanderson sisters, well, they’re obviously still hard at work in Hollywood too. In fact, they just reunited last year for “Hocus Pocus 2” on Disney+.
You can see what the ‘Hocus Pocus” cast looks like now in the photos below.

What does one give the Pope as a present? Well, if you’re “The View” host Whoopi Goldberg, you give him a signed copy of “Sister Act,” along with some merch for the movie. Yes, seriously.
Whoopi returned to the ABC talk show on Monday, after being absent for much of last week. On Wednesday, host Joy Behar explained that Goldberg was “off doing something really exciting” that they couldn’t talk about, and urged viewers to come back on Monday for an explanation. Well, as it turns out, Whoopi went to meet the Pope.
“It was kind of shocking. Because for 11 years, this is something I’ve tried to do,” Whoopi explained. “And you know, you have to go through all these different ways, and we did it a different way. And the next thing I knew I was in Rome, talking to him. And he was quite amazing.

Whoopi Goldberg seems to have sided with Miranda Lambert’s controversial concert remarks after the country singer called out a group of fans for taking a distracting selfie during her concert on Saturday.
On Tuesday’s episode of “The View”, Goldberg exited the stage, telling her co-hosts Joy Behar, Sara Haines, Sunny Hostin and Alyssa Farah Griffin, “I’m leaving,” appearing to be upset during a heated debate about Lambert’s headline-making incident.
“They don’t want to be there,” Goldberg told the panel about the concertgoers. “If they paid money for the tickets, they came to see her. So if she’s singing, at least show a little respect.

“I don’t think I’m done creating this part! It’s still an exploration,” reveals Victoria Clark in reference to the title character of “Kimberly Akimbo.” In this new musical from Jeanine Tesori and David Lindsay-Abaire, Clark portrays a teenage girl with a genetic disease that causes her to age at four times the normal rate. That the Tony winner is still in a daily state of discovery with her performance is fitting given the complexity of the role, and the story’s challenge to the audience to stay in the present during the “Great Adventure” called life. “We have never done the same thing twice,” says Clark of the cast, “we get on the train and we really pay attention. We try to make it fresh.” Watch the exclusive video interview above.

“What’s exciting for me is being able to appreciate what’s come before me, but also not letting that cloud me in any way,” explains Patina Miller when discussing her portrayal of The Witch in this season’s revival of “Into the Woods.” The part has been embodied by a plethora of celebrated Broadway actresses, but that doesn’t intimidate Miller. The Tony-winning actress describes drawing on her “own personal experience…for a new interpretation” of this iconic role. Watch the exclusive video interview above.

After making more than $1.4 billion at the box office, producer Will Packer has gotten into the streaming game with “Praise This.”
The Peacock original marks Packer’s first time producing a movie that wasn’t destined for cinemas. While the new distribution plan might seem like a reaction to the hit or miss theatrical business — or the kind of pivot that would happen after a box office bomb, which Packer has yet to suffer, by the way — that’s not what’s behind the change in strategy.
“Malleable” is a word Packer has found himself using quite often in reference to the current state of moviemaking.
“I’ve had a lot of success with movies that were moderately-budgeted breakout theatrical hits,” he tells Variety over tea at the Mandarin Oriental in New York City. “But there are some of my movies that were successful theatrically five to 10 years ago that...

The top honorees at the 2023 Laurence Olivier Awards were plays that focused on cultures outside of London. “My Neighbour Totoro,” which is based on the beloved Japanese film of the same name from Studio Ghibli, won six trophies, the most of the night, including Best New Comedy, Director, and four craft categories. A revival of the American classic “A Streetcar Named Desire” by Tennessee Williams claimed three: Best Play Revival and for lead Paul Mescal and featured player Anjana Vasan. Meanwhile, the British-based “Prima Facie,” which is set to bow on Broadway this month and will thus compete at the Tony Awards, took home two prizes for Best Play and for star Jodie Comer.
The only other productions to win more than one trophy were all musicals. “Standing at the Sky’s Edge” won two of the top prizes: Best Musical and Best Original Score or New Orchestrations. “Tammy Faye,...

Bette Midler has shared the “off the wall” reason she turned down the part of Deloris Van Cartier in Sister Act.
The 1992 comedy, about a singer who is forced into a witness protection programme in a convent, was originally written by screenwriter Paul Rudnick with Midler in mind for the role.
However, the actor turned down the part, which went on to become one of Whoopi Goldberg’s most notable roles ever.
In a new interview, Midler, 77, was asked if there were any parts she considered to be the “role that got away”.
“They got away or I turned them down!” she told Variety. “They came to me with Sister Act and I said, ‘My fans don’t want to see me in a wimple.’ Can you believe that? How off the wall is that? How crazy is that?

Whoopi Goldberg has shared an update on the status of Sister Act 3, as well as her desire to have Maggie Smith return in a central role.
The actor and comedian appeared on Friday’s (6 January) edition of Loose Women in a special interview with panellist Judi Love.
Goldberg spoke about a variety of topics, including the release of her new film Till, based on the true story of the racist killing of 14-year-old Emmett Till in the US in 1955.
She also discussed the long-discussed third film in the Sister Act series, and whether any new developments had taken place.

Whoopi Goldberg is ready to get back in the habit! The 67-year-old actress and co-host of “The View” co-host gave fans an update on the highly anticipated “Sister Act 3” during Tuesday’s episode of “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon”.
“The script came in yesterday,” Goldberg shared of the musical film. “I really like it, you know, but it has a whole lot of adults to go through. If they don’t get in its way, it could be pretty good.”
Goldberg also asked host Fallon if he’d consider having a cameo role in the film.
“Yes, are you kidding me? To be in ‘Sister Act 3’?” Fallon asked. “Of course I would do that. I would do anything for you!”
Goldberg has previously expressed frustration surrounding the slow pace of the project when speaking with Et in September.

Amid a stacked fall season on Broadway, “Kimberly Akimbo” has emerged as an early Best Musical frontrunner for next spring’s Tony Awards. The new show from Jeanine Tesori and David Lindsay-Abaire oozes heart and charm, and earned unanimous critical praise when it opened on November 10. If star Victoria Clark can leverage the musical’s success into a Tony win in June, she will join an elite group of Tony-winning women.
Clark portrays the titular Kimberly, a young girl from New Jersey about to celebrate her 16th birthday. Only Kimberly isn’t quite so young on the outside. She has an incredibly rare disorder, similar to progeria, which causes her body to age at four times the normal rate. The average lifespan for folks with her disease is 16, giving Kimberly an acute awareness of her own mortality and a desire to experience all the joys and wonders of life in whatever time she has left.

Many might be surprised to learn that Carrie Fisher had a prolific career off-screen as well as on. She was a writer of memoirs, fictional novels, films ("Postcards from the Edge"), as well as an uncredited ghostwriter for many notable movies such as "Star Wars" and "Sister Act." Fisher was a reputable script doctor, a writer hired by filmmakers to improve certain aspects of an existing screenplay. She also worked on the beloved animated classic "Anastasia," the animated feature that /Film considers one of Don Bluth's best films.
In a 2017 Entertainment Weekly interview, the songwriting team of Lynn Ahrens and Stephen Flaherty revealed that Fisher was an important part of the "Anastasia" success story. The film tells the tale of an orphan with amnesia named Anya, who is secretly the lost daughter of the Russian Romanov dynasty. Anya is a spunky female protagonist that is not afraid to say what's...
