Kevin Costner’s Yellowstone days may be over, but one couldn’t deny the fact that the show would’ve never taken off without John Dutton. Costner was partly responsible for why Paramount trusted Taylor Sheridan’s Western drama to work as a TV series. Costner earlier revealed that the project was planned as a very long movie initially, but the plans changed midway to make it into a series.

Costner shared that Yellowstone was made into this larger project mainly due to the involvement of a mainstream star like him. The series is currently in its fifth season, with the second part of the finale season under development. It also spawned two spinoff series so far, 1883 and 1923.

The Phantom of the Opera is sometimes considered one of the Universal Monsters. I get it. From the 1925 version that gave us one of the most infamous unmasking sequences ever courtesy of the great Lon Chaney Sr., through the Hammer iteration with Herbert Lom, all the way up to the 2004 film that gave a lot of us our intro to Gerard Butler. Speaking of that movie, its inspiration and reason for its existence was the Andrew Lloyd Weber musical that premiered in October of 1986 and has had runs all the way through as recently as 2021. 1989 was the beginning of its U.S. tour and we got not one but Two Phantom movies that year. Phantom of the Mall: Eric’s Revenge is cheesy and may just be more well known due to our friend Joe Bob featuring it on the Last Drive In recently. Here in the JoBlo Horror kitchen today...

Dune: Part Two salvaged box office after a lacklustre start to the year as the strike-delayed tentpole from Warner Bros and Legendary Entertainment roared to the top of the North American charts with a thunderous $82.5m three-day haul that set the highest opening weekend of 2024 so far.
‘Dune: Part Two’: Review
Double the $41m pandemic launch of its predecessor, the sci-fi set new opening weekend records for director Denis Villeneuve and stars Timothée Chalamet, Rebecca Ferguson, and Austin Butler and will give Warner Bros Discovery CEO David Zaslav something to cheer about after a low-key Q4 earnings call last month.

The buzz around Dune 2 has been extensive, and it might be well-deserved as fans and critics hailed the Denis Villeneuve-directed sci-fi epic. Dune 2’s initial release has been exciting, and for most, it was exhilarating.
Timothée Chalamet and Zendaya in Dune 2
Good news for the ensemble cast, the movie might just top the chart at the box office after the release, considering the early reception. The Timothée Chalamet and Zendaya starrer movie has to create a big box office splash to recover the $122 million production budget.

As the ’80s came to a close, so too did the first wave of the slasher cycle. While they would continue to be produced into the next decade, 1989 was the last gasp of a dying genre. Returning franchises and hopeful upstarts alike struggled to make an impact. We all know you can never really kill a slasher, but it would take Scream‘s reinvention of the concept in 1996 to renew broad interest.
Cutting Class, another ’89 entry in the subgenre, marked the directorial debut — and, as it turned out, sole directorial effort — from Rospo Pallenberg, who notably co-wrote Excalibur, contributed uncredited rewrites on Exorcist II: The Heretic, and served as a “creative associate” on Deliverance. Despite his pedigree, Pallenberg did not write the script; that was the work of Steve Slavkin, who would go on to create Nickelodeon’s pivotal series Salute Your Shorts.

Do you love movie-theater snacks at jacked-up concession-stand prices, but hate the actual experience of going to the movies? Cinemark has got the service for you. The movie-theater chain announced Tuesday, November 7 the expansion of its third-party delivery service and now brings concessions to your door via DoorDash, Grubhub, and Uber Eats.
Cinemark is the first major exhibitor to partner with all three of the delivery apps. At this writing, Cinemark lists only Texas locations as servicing this program, but a spokesperson confirmed that it will be available “across [Cinemark’s] domestic circuit.”
The menu options include popcorn, soft drinks, Icees, nachos, hot dogs, and candy like Sour Patch Kids, M&Ms, Junior Mints, and Reese’s Pieces, among others. We’re told prices will vary by location; we believe that means they’ll be somewhere between overpriced and overpriced as hell. For an address in Fort Worth, Texas, DoorDash lists a large popcorn,...

I love movies more than just about anything else in the world, but if anything is going to rank higher on my personal hierarchy of needs, it's the promise of free stuff. The economy is in shambles and my rent just went up, so needless to say, I am all about anything that doesn't come with a price tag. We here at /Film have been preaching the gospel of Pluto TV, the free ad-supported streaming television (Fast) provider with thousands of titles in their library and specialized channels of constantly running programming, for years.
If you long for the days of turning on the TV in the middle of the afternoon on a Sunday and watching whatever it is the cable programming gods decided for you, this is the closest thing to capturing that feeling. Want to watch a horror movie? There's a channel for that. Hoping to check out...

Tina Turner and Mick Jagger have been friends for decades, but the singer has finally revealed that she “always” had a crush on The Rolling Stones frontman. Here’s what Turner said.
Tina Turner and Mick Jagger | Lynn Goldsmith/ Getty Images Tina Turner and her then-husband Ike Turner opened for Mick Jagger and The Rolling Stones starting in the mid-1960s
When Ike and Tina Turner released “River Deep, Mountain High,” their fame skyrocketed. Shortly after, they had the opportunity to open for The Rolling Stones on their 1966 tour of the U.K.
Turner told Rolling Stone that Jagger had been around while they recorded the hit in the recording studio with Phil Spector. Turner remembered Jagger, but they’d never talked. “He’s not the type to make you feel you could just come up and talk to him,” Turner explained. Even though the pair didn’t speak, Jagger thought “River Deep,...

Welcome to the Ghostface Glossary, a guide to every horror reference and nod throughout the first five films of the Scream franchise.
After a lot of pausing, rewinding, and zooming in, as well as researching, we’re catching all of the many horror-specific references Williamson, Craven, and Co. included in this beloved postmodern slasher franchise. If we’ve forgotten any glaring ones, kindly let us know.
This guide will exclude homages from previous Scream films and their respective sequels— we’re only looking at outside horror franchises and inspirations, because any red-blooded Ghostface fan is likely already aware of those. (Goes without saying that the beloved faux franchise ‘Stab’(s) 1-8 will also not be counted, since, even though our neon green ‘Stab’ t-shirts and mock VHS tapes feel very real, it’s still a very fake franchise). If we’ve forgotten any glaring ones, kindly let us know.

Many saw Kevin Conroy as the definitive Batman. Before sadly passing in 2022, his gruff rasp as the Dark Knight came to represent the character for a whole generation of '90s kids. His work on "Batman: The Animated Series" was so widely loved that Conroy voiced the character in multiple other projects. Appearing as Batman in the "Arkham" and "Injustice" video games, the actor even showed up as live-action Bruce Wayne in "Crisis On Infinite Earths."

While the 1970s and 1980s were strong decades for independent horror filmmaking, the 1990s proved to be a somewhat interesting time, as there seemed to be an overall tendency for this realm of the industry to be focused on making sequels and creating franchises out of ’80s horror hits, with a few landmark indie horror projects in the mix as well. And since sequels were so dominant at that time, I thought it only made sense for us to start there for this look back on the history of ’90s indie horror cinema.
After the 1980s proved to be a great time for indie horror, where so many movies ended up being successful due to a combination of theatrical releases and the increasing popularity of home video, it feels like in the decade that followed, many producers working in the independent realm wanted to capitalize on those successes by turning...

WarnerMedia CEO Jason Kilar, who is stepping down this week before the company’s merger with Discovery closes, takes pride in being “first over the wall” with a day-and-date streaming movie strategy.
The company stunned the industry at the end of 2020 by announcing the entire 2021 Warner Bros slate would stream on HBO Max at the same time it hit theaters. Rival companies like Disney and NBCUniversal took a more case-by-case approach despite widespread movie theater closures and other disruptions due to Covid.

Exclusive: Warner Bros is sick and tired of having streaming sand kicked in its face.
As Village Roadshow heads back to the court docket today to further push Asap on the breach of contract lawsuit the longtime financier of tentpole flicks filed last week against the WarnerMedia-own studio over box office disappointment The Matrix Resurrections, WB have made a rare move to pull back the veil themselves.
After the usual dry corporate statement they issued last week, a Warner Bros spokesperson Monday took the white gloves off:
Village’s actions have been duplicitous and this dispute is equally contrived. Village was happy to have their name on the credits of the film, traveled to the world premiere in San Francisco, and held themselves out to the media as producers on the film. But they have now reneged on their contractual obligation to pay their share of the cost of the film.

Exclusive: The UK’s National Film and Television School and local production company Popcorn Group have teamed up to launch a new writers prize for “stories with strong identities which look to shape the conversation around social and political issues in a thought-provoking way”.
The inaugural Nfts Popcorn Award has been won by Nfts Screenwriting Ma student Lily Seriki for her “Bridgerton-esque” TV pilot black-comedy Silly Girl, about gender, race and societal expectations in Regency England.
The pilot follows two teenage girls who are meant to be mastering the performance of simpering femininity. But Cecily is an autistic gynecologist with no tolerance for pretense, and Olive is a mixed-race woman with explosive Adhd. Up against a world that seeks to ‘cure’ their minds by controlling their bodies, the best friends learn to love their pathologized identities and fight for a life that’s free, independent, and defiantly insane.

Filmmakers and film-lovers often encourage people to see movies on the biggest screen possible. It's become a common refrain that accompanies the release of movies like Denis Villeneuve's "Dune," all the more so as the pandemic has sapped away business from theaters. Two years ago, when Martin Scorsese was making the promotional rounds for his Netflix film, "The Irishman," he said to people via Popcorn with Peter Travers: "Please don't look at it on a phone, please. An iPad, a big iPad, maybe."

Knoxville Horror Film Fest 2021: "The Knoxville Horror Film Fest will present its lucky 13th annual weekend of cinematic scares Thursday, October 21 through Sunday, October 24, with events split between Maryville, Tennessee’s Parkway Drive-In and the festival’s home base at Central Cinema in Knoxville.
It was Covid-era necessity that drove last year’s premier programming to the Parkway, but it’s pure pleasure that brings it back for a second year. Thursday night’s lineup will kick off the festival with a triple feature of John Carpenter’s ghostly 1980 classic The Fog, Rialto Pictures’ new 40th anniversary 4K restoration of Joe Dante’s The Howling (1981), and heavy metal horror cult item Trick Or Treat (1986). Friday night will continue the fun with the trailers of the 2021 Khff Grindhouse Grind-out, followed by another triple feature of Friday the 13th: The Final Chapter (1984), An American Werewolf In London (1981) and SFX genius Phil Tippett’s years-in-the-making Mad God.

The 55th edition of the Karlovy Vary Intl. Film Festival returned to life in a fully live format Friday after a year-long Covid-forced break, with its traditional rousing dance numbers and a lifetime achievement Crystal Globe for Michael Caine.
The versatile two-time Oscar winner prompted his third standing ovation from the audience packed into the fest’s Grand Hall at the Hotel Thermal when he raised his walking cane from the stage in thanks to his fans.
Saying he began his actor’s journey as “a nobody from nowhere who knew nothing,” Caine told the crowd, “You’ve given me an award for something I love doing.” Fest president Jiri Bartoska honored him with what the actor called the heaviest prize he’s ever tried to lift at an upbeat ceremony featuring elaborate choreography themed around the 1960s U.S. pop song “Popcorn,” with dancers whirling discs that riffed on...

Hello, dear readers! As we get ready to bid another month a fond farewell, we have one final batch of home media releases coming our way before we head into March. Severin Films is keeping busy this week with a trio of Blu-ray releases, including Castle of the Creeping Flesh, The Attic Expeditions, and Plague Town. The new Wrong Turn movie arrives this Tuesday on both Blu and DVD, and if you’re a Troma fan, they’re showing some love to Nightbeast this week as well.
Other releases for February 23rd include Beast Within, Legion of the Night, Only the Good Parts, and the From Dusk Till Dawn trilogy is getting a re-release on DVD, too.

Seven-time Academy Award-nominee Glenn Close is back in the Oscar mix for her turn in Ron Howard’s “Hillbilly Elegy,” now streaming on Netflix. All eyes were on Close last year to finally take home Best Actress for “The Wife,” but alas that honor went to Olivia Colman for “The Favourite.” Speaking with film critic Peter Travers for his ABC News special “Popcorn,” Close had some candid thoughts about the Oscars, pointing to the Best Actress race in 1999 as an example that didn’t “make sense.”
“I honestly feel that to be nominated by your peers is about as good as it gets,” Close said. “And then, I’ve never understood how you could honestly compare performances, you know? I remember the year Gwyneth Paltrow won over that incredible actress who was in ‘Central Station’ and I thought, ‘What?’ It doesn’t make sense.”

(Warning: This post contains spoilers for Wednesday’s “The Masked Singer.”)
“The Masked Singer” Season 4 continued tonight with its third episode and thus third unmasking of the season. But following last week’s wild self-elimination by Gremlin (who turned out to be Mickey Rourke) this week’s episode got us back on track with a decision made by the judges and at-home audience.
On Wednesday’s episode, Popcorn, Giraffe, Sun and Snow Owls (the show’s first-ever two-headed costume) all competed during Group A’s playoffs round.
After those four Season 4 contestants performed, it was time for panelists Jenny McCarthy, Nicole Scherzinger, Ken Jeong and Robin Thicke and guest judge Joel McHale, along with the “Masked Singer” super fans voting from home, to choose the “weakest” competitor for elimination.
The masked singer in question was Giraffe, who sang Kool & The Gang’s “Get Down on It.” He was voted off...

Women in Film, Los Angeles and The Black List announced the participants of the 2020 Feature Lab and Residency on Monday.
The program is an expansion of the organizations’ original writing lab, providing mentorship and career opportunities to seven emerging women screenwriters over the course of a year. This year’s intensive script and professional development sessions will initially take place in online sessions to adhere to social distancing regulations. Participants will have meetings and receive feedback from working feature writers, executives and industry leaders.

Two of my all-time favourite horror films are Michele Soavi’s Stagefright (1987), which sees a group of stage actors locked in the theater for a rehearsal of their upcoming musical production with a psychopathic killer; and Mark Herrier’s Popcorn (1991), which sees a murderer kill the attendees of a movie marathon in an old abandoned cinema. Why am I telling you this?
