In 1987, Yoshiaki Kawajiri released one of the most seminal anime ever in “Wicked City,” a celebrated tale of the fragile existence between humans and demons, featuring a series of imaginative concepts to enhance a spectacular storyline. In 1992, Hong Kong filmmaker Tsui Hark brought about a live-action version of the film with the same general story but several key differences to make for a wholly intriguing remake.
Both “Wicked City” Titles are screening at Hong Kong Arts Centre, as part of the Late Night Series-Art X program
Working in a futuristic version of Hong Kong, agents Ken (Jacky Cheung) and Taki (Leon Lai) are among a team tasked with trying to keep order between humans and Rapters. The Rapters are a race of superpowered beings that live in harmony despite some outliers like Shudo (Roy Cheung) and Orchid (Carmen Lee) playing both sides against each other. Exclusive: The majority of the managers working at LA rep firm The Green Room have abruptly exited to launch management and production outfit Untamed Artists LA.
The move was made in the last few weeks and follows what the group described to us as “irreconcilable differences” with Green Room founder Alex Czuleger, who as of last week was understood to be the only manager left at the firm.
Czuleger, who set up The Green Room in 2014, declined to comment on the reason for the departures but noted that the Green Room would continue to operate as a management company and that replacements for the departing staff would be joining shortly. There is discrepancy between the two parties as to whether all agents left of their own accord.

[This interview was conducted prior to the SAG-AFTRA strike authorization.] How well do you know Jeremy Sisto‘s TV and film characters? Is it as well or perhaps better than he does? When Sisto stopped by TV Insider’s office in the spring (ahead of the FBI–Most Wanted–International crossover event and before the actors’ strike), we not only had to have him dish on his costars and recall his audition for Clueless, but also test his knowledge of his own characters. What makes it tricky is that Sisto has played law enforcement characters on at least three shows — Detective Jack Roth on Wicked City, Detective Cyrus Lupo on Law & Order, and currently Assistant Special Agent Jubal Valentine on FBI (returning for its sixth season on CBS) — and so some of those quotes are very similar … and therefore not the easiest for Sisto to answer. But his characters elsewhere, like in Clueless and on...

With the exception of genre masters like Junji Ito, anime and manga aren’t exactly the most horror-friendly mediums out there. However, from the Cenobite-inspired God Hand of Berserk to the near-Lovecraftian archeology of Made in Abyss, there’s no denying that Japanese artists often manage to sneak in some unexpected scares into their work.
And with decades of Japanese animation to choose from, there are bound to be at least a few oddball productions likely to satisfy audiences with a craving for animated frights. With that in mind, we’ve decided to come up with a list highlighting six of the best anime for horror fans, as not all nightmares have to be in live-action!
While this list is obviously based on personal opinion, we’ll only be considering Japanese productions as proper “anime,” which means no Western animations like Netflix’s Castlevania! With that out of the way,...

Creating terror with animation means that you aren't limited to our concept of reality. In anime, the body can be bent, stretched, and ripped apart using excruciating and fantastical methods that can only be realized via hand-drawn or computer-generated images. Films such as "Vampire Hunter D" and "Wicked City" realize horror anime's grotesque potential, creating hellish worlds where women become spider demons and eat men alive. Old tropes and well-tread creatures such as zombies are given facelifts and realized in new, repulsive ways that can't be replicated by actors in front of a camera.
There's going to be a lot of gore on this list, especially from director Yoshiaki...

As the Covid-19 pandemic, Oval Office hysteria and racial tumult raged outside his studio walls, Flying Lotus spent 2020 with a laser focus on, of all things, anime. The acclaimed musician/producer, whose real name is Steven Ellison, created more than 200 tracks for the score of Netflix’s new anime series “Yasuke,” which premiered April 30 on the streamer; an accompanying soundtrack is out now via Warp Records. Beyond its stellar animation, “Yasuke” has drawn attention for its title character, a real-life 16th century samurai of African descent — a truly rare showing in anime. In much the same way, Flying Lotus has spent his career breaking down barriers between genres, from his jazz-influenced work with Kendrick Lamar to strategically dropping the “Twin Peaks” theme song into his psychedelic DJ sets. Variety spoke to the artist about his creative process for “Yasuke,” his recent Grammy win as co-producer of his friend Thundercat’s...

“The Last of Us” series adaptation at HBO has added Gabriel Luna to its cast, Variety has learned.
Luna joins previously announced series leads Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey, who will star as Joel and Ellie respectively. Luna will star as Tommy, Joel’s younger brother, a former soldier who hasn’t lost his sense of idealism and hope for a better world.
“The Last of Us” series was first announced as being in development at the premium cabler last March, with the show landing a formal series order in November. Based on the video game of the same name, the series takes place twenty years after modern civilization has been destroyed. Joel, a hardened survivor, is hired to smuggle Ellie out of an oppressive quarantine zone. What starts as a small job soon becomes a brutal, heartbreaking journey, as they both must traverse across the U.S. and depend on each other for survival.

The career of Yuen Biao is a curious one. One of the more recognizable names of the golden era of Hong Kong cinema, yet on the surface never reaching the heights of his counterparts Jackie Chan and Sammo Hung. His most immediately recognisable roles are those where featured alongside the other two. Yet he did carve out a solid solo career and during the late 80’s found a niche in fantasy movies. In 1988 he appeared in two adaptations of the Japanese manga “Peacock King”. The initial one reviewed here and its sequel “Saga of the Phoenix”.
Ashura (Gloria Yip), the daughter of the Hell King is awoken from her slumber by one of his minions Raga (Pauline Wong) as she holds the key to his imprisonment. Peacock (Yuen Biao) is sent to Toyko by his master (Eddie Ko) to try and prevent the opening of the Hell gate there.

President Tom Kirkman got a big vote of confidence from Netflix, which rescued Designated Survivor Season 3.
Designated Survivor Season 3 heading to a pickup by Netflix!
Fans will be delighted to hear that Designated Survivor will live up to its title, thanks to a bit of real life Deus ex Machina, courtesy of a certain series-rescuing streaming giant. While ABC cancelled the Kiefer Sutherland vehicle after two seasons, the studio behind the series, eOne, immediately went into talks with Netflix – who already carried international streaming rights for the series – about picking up Designated Survivor Season 3; talks that ultimately proved successful.
Kiefer Sutherland and the cast will return to the series under the purview of a new showrunner in Neal Baer, an executive-producing veteran of shows such as Under the Dome, A Gifted Man, Law & Order: Svu and ER.
