From Geena Davis and Jamie Lee Curtis, to blaxploitation royalty Pam Grier; Joe Dante and Roland Emmerich, to genre legend Peter Hyams topping the bill – 2024’s Forbidden Worlds Film Festival promises the biggest (and maddest) year yet for genre fans in the South West.
Firing into its third year of taking over arguably Bristol’s best cinema screen – the abandoned IMAX at Bristol Aquarium, Forbidden Worlds has never been one to cater to the masses. It’s a true one-screen wonder of a festival, promising the most unusual and sought-after of cinematic treats; big, mad, weird shit projected large and loud, for three straight days.
For example, while 2024’s edition promises an explosive opening night with a 30th anniversary screening of none other than Keanu Reeves action classic The Bus That Couldn’t Slow Down (otherwise known as Speed), look as far as the following day’s line-up and you’ll...

The long-gestating sci-fi remake of Fantastic Voyage, which could pair James Cameron with Guillermo del Toro, is still on the cards, according to the Avatar director.
According to James Cameron, his long-gestating remake of Fantastic Voyage is still happening. That in itself is newsworthy given how long Cameron has been talking about this project. The filmmaker wrote a screenplay for the film decades ago, but in the wake of Titanic's success in 1997, he became transfixed with realising the alien world of Pandora onscreen and with the exception of a couple of documentary films, has only released two Avatar films in the quarter century since.
As far as Fantastic Voyage goes, Cameron’s plan has long been to produce the film, with Gullermo del Toro being the man to direct it. We’ve seen Cameron ‘godfather’ films before while working on the never-ending production of the Avatar films, not least...

Refresh for updates… Tributes are pouring in for Joe Flaherty, whose career launched with Canadian sketch comedy series Sctv, and who was known for his roles as Harold Weir on Freaks and Geeks, and Donald the heckler in Happy Gilmore. Flaherty died Monday at the age of 82.
Martin Short, Flaherty’s co-star on Sctv, remembered Flaherty as “the funniest man in the room.”
“In over 50 years of our friendship, there were very few people as wise or hilarious when it came to comedy, teaching improvisation and the art of character work as Joe,” Short wrote in a press statement. “In ‘Sctv’ we called him the anchor. In life, he was simply the funniest man in the room. I just adored him.”
Adam Sandler paid tribute to his Happy Gilmore co-star in a post on Instagram.
“Oh man. Worshipped Joe growing up, Sandler wrote next to photo of Flaherty. “Always had me and my brother laughing.

Joe Flaherty, a writer and performer on the influential and beloved sketch comedy series Sctv and a series regular on Freaks and Geeks, died Monday following a brief illness. He was 82.
His death was announced by his daughter Gudrun Flaherty, who said in a press statement, “After a brief illness, he left us yesterday, and since then, I’ve been struggling to come to terms with this immense loss. Dad was an extraordinary man, known for his boundless heart and an unwavering passion for movies from the ’40s and ’50s. His insights into the golden age of cinema didn’t just shape his professional life; they were also a source of endless fascination for me. In these last few months, as he faced his health challenges, we had the precious opportunity to watch many of those classic movies together — moments I will forever hold dear.”

Joe Flaherty, founding member of “Sctv” and ubiquitous comic actor for decades including a stint as the Dad on “Freaks and Geeks,” has died at the age of 82, according to multiple reports.
The Pittsburgh-born performer (a rare American in the Canadian comedy sphere) got his start with the Chicago-based Second City Theater, first appearing on the “National Lampoon Radio Hour” before resettling in Toronto to become part of Second City’s core in the Great White North. He was one of the initial writer/performers on “Sctv,” a vanguard sketch comedy series co-starring John Candy, Eugene Levy, Andrea Martin, Rick Moranis, Catherine O’Hara, Harold Ramis (for a little while), Dave Thomas, and, later, Martin Short, that mixed parody programming with behind-the-scenes shenanigans at a low rent television station in “Mellonville.” Indeed, if “Sctv” could be said to have a main character, it would be Flaherty’s Guy Caballero, the corrupt,...

In a career on stage, screen and television that has endured for more than 50 years, writer, actor and comedian Martin Short got his start in a 1972 Canadian production of the stage musical “Godspell” in a cast that included Eugene Levy, Andrea Martin, Victor Garber, Dave Thomas and Gilda Radner, all of whom would work with Short on subsequent projects in the years to come.
Short’s first exposure to American audiences was as a member of the Second City troupe in the sketch show, “Sctv Network 90,” which aired on NBC from 1981-83 and earned Short his first Emmy for writing. There he created such signature Short characters as Ed Grimley and Jiminy Glick. He went on to be cast in Season 10 of “Saturday Night Live” (1985-86) along with Billy Crystal, Harry Shearer and Christopher Guest. A remake of Little Shop Of Horrors is in the works with director Joe Dante and original creator Roger Corman.
The last update we had on a remake of Little Shop Of Horrors was back in 2020, when it was reported that Taron Egerton, Scarlett Johansson and Chris Evans were set to star, with Greg Berlanti directing from a script by Matthew Robinson.
It now appears those plans have been abandoned in favour of a different creative team. Described as a “reimagining intended to jumpstart a new franchise”, Little Shop Of Halloween Horrors will be directed by Joe Dante, according to Deadline.
Charles S Haas, who previously collaborated with Dante on Gremlins 2: The New Batch, will write the screenplay. Roger Corman will co-produce with Brad Krevoy.
The story originated as low-budget film directed by Corman and co-starring a young Jack Nicholson. Little Shop Of Horrors quickly cemented itself as a...

To celebrate the release of What Happens Later, the new rom-com opening in UK cinemas this week, we had the pleasure of sitting down with the film’s star and director to find out more.
Snowed-in at a regional airport overnight, ex-lovers Willa (Meg Ryan) and Bill (David Duchovny) realize they’re still attracted to each other — but also still equally annoyed with each other. As they unpack the riddle of their mutual past and compare their lives to the dreams they once shared, they begin to wonder if their reunion is a mere coincidence or something more enchanted.
Chatting to Ryan, who is making her sophomore directorial effort, and Duchovny, we talk rom-coms, the lure of the film and the unique challenges of performing a “two-hander”, the advantages and disadvantages of working for a director who is also an actor, as well as a chat about two of their older works,...

The heat is back on in this episode of Revisited, as we follow up our last outing with Axel Foley in Beverly Hills Cop with the inevitable sequel. Part one proved to be such a mammoth hit that not only helped send Eddie Murphy’s career into the stratosphere but it guaranteed that part two wouldn’t be too far away.
If you take a look back at the 1980s, which is something we love to do here at JoBlo, there are many franchises that started in the era and still have longevity or an influence in modern Hollywood. However, when you have a movie as popular as Beverly Hills Cop, that doesn’t necessarily mean that a sequel will match the quality of the first, and it’s been a problem that Hollywood has faced over the years. Just how, exactly, do you keep your inbuilt audience happy while...

Dennis Quaid has a scary proposition he wants to share — and it just so happens, Fox News is happy to oblige.
Quaid — star of such films as “The Right Stuff,” “Innerspace” and “The Rookie” — made a return appearance on the network Thursday night to promote an Armageddon-style documentary he narrated about the U.S. power grid, “Grid Down, Power Up.”

Quaid — star of such films as “The Right Stuff,” “Innerspace” and “The Rookie” — made a return appearance on the network Thursday night to promote an Armageddon-style documentary he narrated about the U.S. power grid, “Grid Down, Power Up.”

“Only Murders in the Building” Season 3 contains a cast of heavy hitters joining the staple trio of Steve Martin, Martin Short and Selena Gomez. Each addition drives this season’s murder mystery, particularly Paul Rudd’s Ben Glenroy, whose second and certain death earns him consideration on the murder podcast.
Also entering the puzzle this season is Meryl Streep as aspiring actress Loretta Durkin, who auditions and gets cast in the role of The Nanny by Oliver himself in his new play. All her life she has been waiting to hear the words he says to her after she finishes her monologue. Ben Glenroy brings some interesting people along with him — mainly his manager and adopted brother Dickey (Jeremy Shamos) and his cameraman Tobert (Jesse Williams). Kimber (Ashley Park) acts in the play as well.

If you don't know him by name, you almost certainly know Vernon Wells by his face if you're a fan of '80s movies. He was Bennett, the Aussie villain with the chainmail tank top and Freddie Mercury mustache in "Commando," and he scared the pants off kids as Mr. Igoe, the sinister hitman with an interchangeable hand in "Innerspace." Or you may remember him as Lord General, the crazed leader of a mutant biker gang that crashes the party in "Weird Science."
Wells' career as one of Hollywood's go-to bad guys at the time was made possible by his ferocious performance as Wez, the psychotic henchman in "The Road Warrior," George Miller's sequel to his low-budget smash, "Mad Max." This time around, a bigger budget enabled the director to go bigger, faster, wilder, and weirder than his original vision. This time, our hero Max Rocktansky is battling a...

American Dad directors and creatives stepped in for voiceover cast and key creatives today on San Diego Comic-Con to tease the upcoming season on TBS. The session kicked off with Innerspace parodied episode airing on Sept. 4, in which Francine, Stan’s wife, shrinks down into a small spaceship and takes a ride through Stan’s body; a battle with spiders ensues.
Asked about the Christmas episode this year, director Brent Woods said that Santa is making an appearance as Stan’s family is “transported into a different place, we have fun with them looking like CGI animation.”
One fan asked if B12, the boy band which was assembled by Snot’s uncle. That’s still Tbd.
Another fan raised the question to the panel today in Ballroom 20 as to how the show deals with the network’s standards and practices.

The Vampire’s Kiss episode of Wtf Happened to This Horror Movie? was Written by Ric Solomon, Narrated by Travis Hopson, Edited by Jaime Vasquez, Produced by Lance Vlcek and John Fallon, and Executive Produced by Berge Garabedian.
Nicolas Cage has brought us some truly unhinged performances. From Castor Troy in Face/Off, to his supporting role as Eddie in Deadfall, and even Edward Malus, a woman-punching policeman in the 2006 remake of The Wicker Man. There is no stopping his extreme method acting. But where did it all come from? In 1989, Nicolas’ seedling was born in the horror comedy Vampire’s Kiss (get it Here). Back in the 80’s, some would say that his performance was too chaotic and horrendous. If you were to ask a millennial’s opinion today, they would tell you it’s one of the greatest films ever made. This article contains spoilers for "Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3."
The "Guardians of the Galaxy" films are without a doubt the most aesthetically diverse entries within the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Far from being just another superhero saga, the films blend elements of comic-book-style derring-do, soap opera, space opera, action-adventure, and character-based melodrama.
But one particular element that writer/director James Gunn has continually brought to all three "Guardians" films is horror. For those not particularly well-versed in the genre, the horrific aspects of the "Guardians" movies may simply seem "edgy," but to those who are aware of Gunn's horror-soaked past as a filmmaker, these elements stick out like a big, fleshy tentacle.
The latest installment of the saga, "Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3," is no exception to showcasing Gunn's horror roots. On the contrary; it may be the goopiest, most intense, upsetting, and transgressive of all the "Guardians" movies,...

Nicolas Cage’s turn as Count Dracula in Renfield, flying into theaters April 14 from Universal, isn’t the first time the actor has sunk his teeth into exploring the undead.
Thirty-four years ago, he starred in the indie flick Vampire’s Kiss as Peter Loew, a New York literary agent convinced that his lover Rachel (Jennifer Beals) has transformed him into a vampire. With a script from Joseph Minion (After Hours), director Robert Bierman’s feature initially had Dennis Quaid attached as the lead until he dropped out to shoot Innerspace. The film’s team remembers Cage calling repeatedly to pitch himself.
“We just didn’t see Nicolas in the part,” producer Barbara Zitwer admits to THR. Ultimately, Cage landed the gig and continued to surprise with his acting choices, including his insistence that Peter eat a live cockroach instead of a raw egg yolk as scripted. “I had a complete breakdown,...

A number of great movies are leaving HBO Max at the end of March, so it’s time to prioritize these titles in your queue. Filmmaker James Gunn’s sequel/soft reboot “The Suicide Squad” will depart the streaming service on March 22 after first hitting HBO Max the same day it was released in theaters back in 2021. Similarly, “Space Jam: A New Legacy” was whisked away on March 1 after also getting a day-and-date release in 2021 (sorry/not sorry if you missed it).
You also only have until March 7 to stream “Just a Boy From Tupelo: Bringing Elvis to the Big Screen,” a short documentary on the making of the Oscar-nominated biopic “Elvis.”
Other noteworthy films leaving HBO Max this month include “The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford,” “Contagion,” the extended version of “Dances with Wolves,” “Ghostbusters,” “Four Weddings and a Funeral,” “Love & Basketball” and “Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping.

This post contains spoilers for HBO's "The Last Of Us" as well as Naughty Dog's video games, "The Last Of Us" and "The Last Of Us: Part II."
For seven weeks now, we've watched smuggler Joel Miller (Pedro Pascal) fight to get teenager Ellie (Bella Ramsey) safely to the Fireflies, but all along, we've also been watching him fight for something else: her right to be a kid. The HBO series set the stage early on with the death of Joel's own daughter, Sarah (Nico Parker), familiarizing us with a world in which safety is far from guaranteed and the innocent are just as likely to die as the guilty. Ellie's own naivety perfectly balances Joel's cynicism, and it becomes clearer every week that he'll do anything to protect her as he would his own daughter.
But until now, we haven't actually gotten to see what being a kid...

Jack Quaid is best known for his role as Hughie Campbell in the Prime TV series "The Boys," but you may have also seen him in blockbuster films like "The Hunger Games" and "Scream." If you're wondering when he'll hit the big screen again, it's actually very soon because Jack is set to appear in the star-studded film "Oppenheimer," which hits theaters in July.
Jack has definitely come a long way since making his film debut in 2012, and if his name sounds familiar to you, that's because he comes from a famous family. Jack's father is seasoned actor Dennis Quaid, whose career spans decades and credits include "The Big Easy," "The Parent Trap," and "The Day After Tomorrow." Jack's mother, Meg Ryan, has an equally impressive résumé, as she's been in a bunch of our favorite romantic comedies like "When Harry Met Sally," "Sleepless in Seattle," and "You've Got Mail.

Richard Miller, the famed sculptor whose decades of memorable work at Industrial Light and Magic included creating Princess Leia’s gold bikini for Return of the Jedi and Davy Jones’ tentacled beard for two Pirates of the Caribbean movies, has died. He was 80.
Miller died peacefully in his sleep on Thursday — two days after his birthday — at his home in Northern California, an Ilm spokesperson told The Hollywood Reporter. He was a cancer survivor and died after an extended stay in hospice care.
A dear member of Ilm’s extended family, Miller was the lead sculptor and a key staffer in the Ilm Creature Shop and later the Ilm Model Shop for nearly 30 years. He contributed to 55 features and numerous other projects dating to 1981, when he joined the company to work on 1983’s Jedi, the last installment in the original Star Wars trilogy.

Disney Animation's "Strange World" is now in theaters, and the movie about three generations of the Clade family finding themselves in a land unlike anything they've ever seen makes for a delightful film to see with your own family over the Thanksgiving holiday.
If you've seen "Strange World," you also know there's some surprises in store for the Clades as well as for the audience. I talked with director Don Hall and writer/co-director Qui Nguyen about that major reveal (and where they got inspiration for it), the movie's score and its "Raiders of the Lost Ark" feel, and how the game in the movie actually exists in our not-so-strange world. I also got to ask Nguyen about another Disney project he's working on with Ryan Reynolds.

Warning: Major spoilers ahead for "Strange World."
In the new Disney Animation film, "Strange World," the Clade family lives in a land nestled in the center of a mountain range. The mountains are unpassable ... not that Jaeger Clade (voiced by Dennis Quaid) believes that. He and a group of explorers set off to try to find out what's on the other side of the range, but when his son Searcher (voiced by Jake Gyllenhaal) finds a plant that can bring electricity to the land, he and the rest of the group turn back. Jaeger isn't seen again for 25 years.
When things start going wrong with their powers source, the land's leader, Callisto (voice of Lucy Liu), calls on Searcher — now a farmer of these plants — to help her discover the issue. They along with his wife, Meridian (voiced by Gabrielle Union), their son, Ethan (voiced by Jaboukie Young-White), and the family's three-legged dog,...

The modern-day version of the pitch that sold director Joe Dante on "Innerspace" would be something like this: What if we shrank Dwayne Johnson to miniature size and injected him into Kevin Hart's body? I'd probably watch that, and it was the kind of high concept that was in abundance in '80s Hollywood.
It's a fun idea that resulted in a neat movie. "Innerspace" is a likable combination of comedy and adventure, Oscar-winning special effects, and terrific chemistry between its three leads. Dennis Quaid plays Tuck Pendleton, a hard-drinking Navy pilot who quits his job to take part in a top-secret miniaturization experiment. The plan is to inject him and his tiny submersible into a rabbit, but bad guys raid the lab and he ends up injected into the butt of neurotic grocery store clerk Jack Putter (Martin Short) instead. Try and find anyone who doesn't like Joe Dante's science fiction comedy "Innerspace." Whether you're a child of the '80s, you discovered the tiny adventures of Dennis Quaid and Martin Short on DVD and home video, or happened to catch it at a special theatrical screening, chances are you love this movie. The inventive story follows marine Lt. Tuck Pendleton (Quaid), an experimental test pilot who is accidentally injected into a civilian named Jack Putter (Short) after being scientifically miniaturized. Unfortunately, you probably did not see "Innerspace" when it first came out in theaters in July of 1987. That's a primetime summer blockbuster slot and the powers that be genuinely thought the combination of Dante's direction and state-of-the-art effects was going to result in a smash hit for Warner Brothers. Unfortunately, no one showed up to see it when it was originally released.

In the world of cinema, a filmmaker would count themselves extremely lucky to have just one movie that has a longer shelf life than its opening weekend, let alone a film that stands the test of time decades after its release. But Joe Dante, the man behind "Gremlins," "The Howling," and many other classics is a man that gets to say precisely that.
More than a filmmaker who was behind the camera for the likes of "Innerspace" and "The 'Burbs," Dante is also very much a film buff and historian, using his website Trailers From Hell to document and discuss classic films, not to mention his actual collection of film prints. As such, he seems like the perfect man to curate a movie marathon and, wouldn't you know it? That's exactly what he's done.

This year, Neil Gaiman’s comic book series “The Sandman” was finally adapted on screen in Netflix’s popular television series. But this is far from the first time that Hollywood tried to put the sprawling fantasy world to film.

It's been over three years since we flew with Captain Mercer and his crew. In every way, The Orville: New Horizons Season 3 Episode 1 is Epic with a capital E, which is also an E for Electric Dreams, the premiere's title.
Electric Dreams, of course, is a reference to the literary source material for the film Bladerunner, Philip K. Dick's novel, Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?, but there's another literary reference when you consider Isaac's attempt to die in the light of Shakespeare and Hamlet's description of suicide, "To sleep, perchance to dream."
It's a darker foray for a premiere than one might expect for Seth MacFarlane's homage to Trek, given the humor and slapstick that set it apart from Star Trek: Discovery back in 2017 when both shows launched, but undeniably impressive in scope, style, and sentiment.
Kudos to the production team that pulled out all the...

Step aside, David Cronenberg, there’s a new master of body horror in town. Or rather, masters, in the case of co-directors Véréna Paravel and Lucien Castaing-Taylor (Leviathan, Caniba), whose latest ethnographic opus takes us not only inside the world of invasive medical procedures as practiced in various hospitals around Paris, but about as far inside the human body as a feature-length documentary has ever gone.
To say that De Humani Corporis Fabrica is not for the fainthearted is an understatement, because unlike in Cronenberg’s movies, the ample gore on display is very much the real thing — so much so that it can be painful to watch. And yet, for viewers who resist the temptation to flee for the nearest exit, this fascinating and probing look at modern surgery is a memorable experience, making us ponder our own humanity as we watch humans reduced to pure flesh-and-blood organisms.
