Usually, the fall season brings dozens of new TV shows to the airwaves, but with the ongoing SAG-AFTRA strike, the season looks like it may be a virtual dead zone, and that’s not only because no shows are currently shooting. Fully completed seasons are also sitting on the shelf, with many of them star-driven projects that need their talent front and center, selling them to get the viewership they need to succeed.
According to a report in THR, this includes already wrapped seasons of Feud, the Orphan Black spinoff Echoes at AMC+, Paramount’s Frasier sequel series and new star-driven prestige projects. This includes shows like Vince Vaughn’s Bad Monkey, Palm Royale with Kristen Wiig and Laura Dern, and The Curse starring Emma Stone. Even a show like Fargo, which should have a built-in audience, will likely find its latest season delayed. The new season stars Jon Hamm...

In executive suites all over Hollywood, the conversation has turned to whether to air or shelve content.
In the wake of SAG-AFTRA’s July 13 decision to join the Writers Guild of America on strike, television executives, like their film counterparts, have found themselves thrust into this debate. Without any clear sense of how long the work stoppage will last, the question becomes: Do you really want to run through what ammo you have so early in the fight? And, for that matter, is it worth rolling out series without stars available to promote them?
At multiple streamers, discussions are already underway about potentially moving certain fully shot (but undated) series to early 2024, if not simply benching them until the dual strike ends. In at least a few cases, executives say the stars themselves have asked that their shows be held so that they can be involved in both the promotion and the celebration.

Nathan Fielder and the Safdie Brothers have teamed up for a Showtime series that remains shrouded in mystery, yet it’s already generating immense excitement. The Curse revolves around a couple adjusting to married life while co-starring in a tumultuous HGTV series called Flipanthropy. While not much has been revealed about the show so far, rumors suggest that the project drew inspiration from real-life marriage problems faced by Flip or Flop stars Tarek El Moussa and Christina Anstead.
Although specific details remain under wraps, recent behind-the-scenes tidbits have only deepened the show’s intrigue. Co-creator Benny Safdie, who co-stars as a long-haired, turquoise-jewelry-wearing producer, revealed to GQ a peculiar on-set pet peeve: He hates when actors don’t eat on camera. During the filming of The Curse, Safdie confessed to devouring “sixty chips in one take, and we must have had nine takes.”...

Benny and Josh Safdie clawed their way to the top of the independent film world by invoking the DIY realism of indie legends like John Cassavetes. And now that they’re working on projects with some of the biggest actors and filmmakers in Hollywood, they still believe in going the extra mile to get the details right.
In a new interview with GQ, Benny Safdie opened up about his passion for eating on camera. The filmmaker explained that it infuriates him when characters don’t eat during meal scenes because performers didn’t want to consume food multiple times. It’s a mistake that he tries to avoid making when he acts.
“I hate it when people don’t eat. It destroys me,” Safdie said, recalling the great lengths he went to make sure his “Licorice Pizza” dinner scene looked realistic. “I don’t know how many tiramisus I ate,...

A24, the scrappy indie studio that has built a brand for itself as a home for hip and cutting-edge movies, triumphed over its deeper-pocketed rivals at the Oscars on Sunday. It scored a leading nine wins, topping that of its closest competitor, Netflix, which had to settle for six trophies. Plus, A24 not only captured best picture for “Everything Everywhere All at Once” but also pulled off the incredibly rare feat of winning every major acting category, with three statuettes coming for the cast of the head-spinning adventure film and the other one recognizing Brendan Fraser’s work in “The Whale.”
But don’t expect the studio to do a victory lap. Co-founders David Fenkel and Daniel Katz (who named their shop after the highway that connects Rome to Teramo) shun the spotlight and have done almost no interviews or profiles, though they have certainly been asked. Rather, the indie...

A24 and Fruit Tree Productions have added several new cast members for the upcoming thriller with the intriguing title of "I Saw the TV Glow." This project comes to us from writer and producer Jane Schoenbrun. If "Poltergeist" and "The Ring" made you fear your television and VHS player, you're going to find the synopsis intriguing. That goes double if you love horror television.
The cast isn't just populated with actors, but a bunch of musicians as well, including Fred Durst, indie artist Lindsey Jordan from Snail Mail, the band King Woman, and more.
If Fruit Tree Productions sounds familiar, it's the banner started by Academy Award-winner Emma Stone and Emmy-nominated writer-director Dave McCary in 2020.
The film has wrapped production already, though there has been no release date announcement yet. We'll keep you updated as that information becomes available.

A who’s who of music talent will make appearances in an upcoming A24 horror film titled “I Saw the TV Glow,” including Phoebe Bridgers as part of Haley Dahl’s side project Sloppy Jane, Limp Bizkit’s Fred Durst, Snail Mail’s Lindsey Jordan and King Woman.
Justice Smith and Brigette Lundy-Paine will lead the cast of “I Saw the TV Glow,” which is directed by Jane Schoenbrun and is in post-production now. The film wrapped production a week ago.

This post contains minor spoilers for Star Trek: Picard season two.
The upcoming Star Trek ongoing Strange New Worlds is all about making the familiar seem new and interesting. The series stars Anson Mount as Captain Christopher Pike, the predecessor to the U.S.S. Enterprise’s most famous skipper, James T. Kirk. He’ll be joined by other updates to well-known Trek characters, including Rebecca Romijn as first officer Una Chin-Riley aka Number One and Ethan Peck as science officer Mr. Spock.
With that in mind, a recent conversation between Mount and his podcast co-host Branan Edgens is much more than the usual small talk. Broadcast via Instagram, Mount and Edgens chatted about the next season of their podcast The Well, a series of interviews about the nature of creativity. The movie awards’ season is in full flower with such films as Jane Campion’s “The Power of the Dog”; Steven Spielberg’s “West Side Story”; Kenneth Branagh’s “Belfast,” Guillermo Del Toro’s “Nightmare Alley” and Joel Coen’s “The Tragedy of Macbeth” among the favorites for top prizes. But one thing we know for certain is that there is no sure thing when it comes to the Oscars. Consider the case of seventy years ago. Not only were there surprises among the nominees, but there were also some shocks when it came to the winners of the 1952 Oscars.
Let’s revisit the 24th Academy Awards, which took place March 20, 1952 at the Pantages Theatre in Hollywood and were hosted by Danny Kaye. This was the last time the ceremony was presented on radio. Oscar-winning “Moonlight” filmmaker Barry Jenkins and his producing partners Adele Romanski and Mark Ceryak have signed a first-look television deal with HBO and HBO Max, the WarnerMedia-owned platforms said Thursday.
Under the two-year pact, HBO and HBO Max will have first dibs on small-screen projects developed by Jenkins, Romanski and Ceryak’s production company, Pastel. As part of the agreement, “Moonlight” studio A24 will executive produce all of Pastel’s HBO/HBO Max projects and partner with Jenkins’ company on “select projects” outside of the first-look deal.
Jenkins’ Pastel was previously under a first-look deal with Amazon Studios, which is about to release his limited series “The Underground Railroad.”
Pastel’s recent projects include the Jenkins-directed “If Beale Street Could Talk,” Eliza Hittman’s “Never Rarely Sometimes Always” and Amazon’s upcoming “The Underground Railroad,” based on Colson Whitehead’s Pulitzer Prize-winning novel and directed by Jenkins. Additionally, Pastel...

The 24th edition of Bucheon International Fantastic Film Festival (Bifan) closed off on Thursday in limited capacity, finishing up the first fully-hybrid film festival in the world. Unlike many of its peers this year, Bifan hosted screenings in-theaters (at 35% capacity) alongside its online program on local streaming service Watcha. Because of the in-person offering, Bifan unwittingly witnessed the world premiere of more films than originally intended, including Annecy contender “Beauty Water”. The famous genre film festival has stood as a monumental alternative to the popular online festival format.
Among this year’s winners, German production “Pelican Blood” (Katrin Gebbe) won Best of Bucheon with raving reviews. Pouya Aminpori’s Iranian short “The Third Person” championed the Best Short Film, and regularly sold-out screenings “Saint Maud” and “Sheep Without a Shepherd” carved out their own fair share of recognition. Sometimes a film or TV project comes together and you sit back and wonder, “Did the studio have me in mind when they approved this?” That’s the case with the upcoming Showtime series, “The Curse.” It appears that Showtime took a look inside my brain and decided to make a 30-minute comedy series based on my own interests, which include the Safdie Brothers, Nathan Fielder, and Hgtv.

The collaboration of our dreams is commencing. Following their hit thriller Uncut Gems, the Safdies are teaming with a guy who graduated from one of Canada’s top business schools, Nathan Fielder. Rather than heading to the big screen, they are going to the medium Fielder knows the best: television— specifically Showtime.
Deadline reports the duo will direct the pilot for The Curse, a half-hour comedy show written by Benny Safdie and Nathan Fielder. The series explores how an alleged curse disturbs the relationship of a newly married couple (one of whom is played by Fielder) who star in Flipanthropy, their troubled Hgtv show which is produced by Benny Safdie’s character. Though not inspired by Hgtv’s actual show Flip or Flop, we imagine they’ll be poking fun at some reality TV tropes.

Nathan Fielder and “Uncut Gems” directors Benny and Josh Safdie are bringing their talents to Showtime, which has given the green light to a pilot for “The Curse.”
Deadline reported that the half-hour comedy series, co-written by Benny and Fielder (“Nathan For You”) and directed by the Safdie brothers, will center on a mysterious curse that disturbs the relationship of a married couple who star in a fictional Hgtv show. Fielder is expected to play the husband, while Benny will play the producer of the fictional show. Fielder and the Safdie Brothers will executive produce the pilot, which will be produced by Showtime.
Additional details about the series, including additional casting and a release date, are still under wraps. A Showtime representative declined to comment.
The Showtime pickup continues what has been a prolific few months for the Safdie brothers, whose Adam Sandler-led “Uncut Gems” became a smash critical and commercial hit.

Exclusive: Showtime has given a pilot green light to The Curse, a half-hour comedy from Uncut Gems directors/co-writers Benny & Josh Safdie and Nathan for You creator and star Nathan Fielder, I have learned.
Written by Fielder and Benny Safdie, The Curse stars Fielder and co-stars Benny Safdie. It explores how an alleged curse disturbs the relationship of a newly married couple who star in Flipanthropy, their troubled Hgtv show, I hear.
Fielder will play the husband; Benny Safdie will play the producer of the Hgtv show.
The Curse does not cite any real-life inspirations, though its description does bring to mind Tarek El Moussa and Christina Anstead, stars of Hgtv’s popular series Flip or Flop, whose marriage fell apart after the success of their show made them household names.

Paramount has offered another look at its upcoming horror film “A Quiet Place Part II,” posting the film’s new TV spot online on Friday ahead of its airing during Super Bowl Liv on Sunday.
A sequel to the 2018 hit “A Quiet Place,” the film follows the surviving members of the Abbott family as they leave their farmhouse camp and tiptoe further into the outside world, meeting other survivors while continuing to avoid the alien creatures with hypersensitive hearing that have slaughtered most of Earth’s population.
“There are people out there,” Evelyn Abbott (Emily Blunt) says in the new TV spot. “People worth saving.”
The trailer begins by teasing a flashback of what looks to be the aliens’ first attack, and follows the Abbott family’s escape from a small town as it rapidly spirals into chaos. Director John Krasinski reprises his role as the late father Lee Abbott in this new footage.

The trivia battle of the century has found two worthy teams on Riverdale Season 4 Episode 11.
In one corner, there was the devious and elitist clique from Stonewall Prep. Of course, with Brett taking the helm as their leader. While coming up for the heroes in the second spot, Betty and her Riverdale High ladies were ready to slay the competition.
After weeks of Betty dealing with Brett's smug attitude, their face-off was long overdue!
Betty was so close to having her Stewie Griffin moment and shouting "Victory is mine!" with no consequences. She earned it! We want the best for her, and she had it before it was taken away.
Just when you think life is turning around for her, something emerges from the dark to drag it back down.
Alice's heart was in the right place by wanting to see Betty succeed, but has she learned anything these last four years?...

Tatsushi Omori – born in 1970 in Tokyo, made his directional debut with “The Whispering of the Gods” (2005). His following feature, “A Crowd of Three” (2010) was shown in the Berlin International Film Festival’s Forum section, and was officially selected at the Hong Kong International Film Festival. “The Ravine of Goodbye” (2013) won the Special Jury Prize at the Moscow International Film Festival.
“Taro the Fool” – following the outlaw movie tradition, “Taro the Fool” depicts three boys living outside the norms of society. Taro has never been to school. Running with a pair of fellow misfits, his carefree life begins moving in a deadly direction. Using vivid imagery, director Tatsushi Omori brings to life his original script, exploring child neglect and the social exclusion of people with disabilities in Japan.
Would you agree with the statement that human being is evil by nature and the goodness is merely a state when the evil temporarily does not exist?...

Released in 2000 and celebrated by international-horror nerds via videotapes passed around like viruses, Takashi Shimizu’s Ju-on helped usher in a wave of modern Japanese creepfests that slowly made their way west. The title translated as something like “The Curse”; it would eventually be better known as The Grudge. Along with 1998’s The Ring, the film (and the numerous related series, sequels, quasi-remakes, and brand-name bastardizations) was the most recognizable ambassador for a genre folks dubbed J-Horror. By the time Sam Raimi and producer Roy Lee enlisted Shimizu and noted...

Singapore’s 108 Media has secured the support of the Malaysian authorities to develop horror-action film “Best Served Cold,” based on the short story “Don’t Eat The Rice” by Sabah-based author Jill Girardi and characters in her novel “Hantu Macabre.” The adaptation is by writer-director Aaron Cowan.
The film could be one of the first to make use of the new bilateral co-production treaty between Singapore and Malaysia. “We would like to congratulate Malaysia’s Siung Films and Singapore’s 108 Media. Both Malaysia and Singapore are excited about this effort as we are planning for Malaysia-Singapore Treaty discussion starting in January 2020,” said Hans Isaac, chairman of the National Film Development Corporation Malaysia (Finas). “Finas Malaysia encourages and welcomes co-production treaties with not just Singapore but other countries to establish closer relationship that eases buying, distribution, content creating and collaboration.”

History Channel’s The Curse of Oak Island has been somewhat of a curse for those of us that have been following it religiously in the last 7 seasons. The treasure hunting show has failed to show us any real treasure as of yet, but we still continue to watch The Curse year after year. That’s probably largely due to the show’s biggest draw—the Lagina brothers. Rick and Marty Lagina are the main cast members of the show, and their interest in the Oak Island mystery is what got many of its fans into the History Channel series. If the lives

Nothing good can come from an introspective and seemingly content Nicolas Cage muttering that he’s finally “living the dream,” especially in a film directed by beleaguered filmmaker Richard Stanley and inspired by a classic short by H.P. Lovecraft. Such is the general shape of Stanley’s wild return to feature filmmaking, “Color Out of Space,” which follows Cage and company as they attempt a quiet life in the country, only to be hit (literally and figuratively) by a malevolent alien organism that materializes as vivid color.
Per the film’s intriguingly slight official synopsis, “after a meteorite lands in the front yard of their farm, Nathan Gardner and his family find themselves battling a mutant extraterrestrial organism as it infects their minds and bodies, transforming their quiet rural life into a technicolor nightmare.” The film also stars Joely Richardson as Nathan’s wife, along with Madeleine Arthur, Brendan Meyer,...

“There are just some people who should never reproduce,” says a curtain-twitching busybody about one of her neighbors in a drab housing estate in Harlow, England. It’s the kind of smug, ugly line all too often used to demean underprivileged families in Britain’s raging, ceaseless class battle — though in Fyzal Boulifa’s darkly perceptive suburban drama “Lynn + Lucy,” it’s a casual shot fired in an especially unhappy case of internal working-class warfare. Toughly updating an age-old strain of gossip-fueled neighborhood morality play, this story of female friendship undone by domestic tragedy plays as a kind of Sirkian melodrama for the Daily Mail age of tabloid hysteria — altogether an audacious, promise-confirming feature debut for Boulifa, whose shorts “Rate Me” and “The Curse” both took top honors in Directors’ Fortnight at Cannes.

Whether or not you know his name, H.P Lovecraft has had a rather significant influence on modern horror. The late 20th century writer is best known for his mastery of "cosmic horror," a sort of otherworldly and existential dread that injects deep, indescribable fear into your veins. Cosmic horror is hard to pin down, but something like 2018's Annihilation or even 1982's The Thing are great examples. Terrors that are almost incomprehensible in nature. Obviously, with such complex mechanisms at work in Lovecraft's writing, it should come as no surprise that his stories can be, in many cases, impossible to adapt. But that hasn't stopped people from trying!
Some of the most notable Lovecraftian adaptations include The Haunted Palace (1963), Re-Animator (1985), and Necronomicon (1994). More notable still are films that take great inspiration from his work. For instance, many believe that the monster from Cloverfield is based on one of Lovecraft's most iconic monsters,...

The 14th New York Television Festival wrapped its first summer edition today by awarding the off-kilter independent pilot Hammerhead its two top prizes.
The story of an up-and-comer in New York determined not to let his deformed head derail his ambitions captured the Overall Best of Fest Award and Nytvf Critics Award. The Best Comedy Project award went to Smüchr; Best Animated Project was Omega House (which also scored a development deal from Comedy Central); and Best Drama or Dramedy Project was Paint.
After the fest’s shift from its traditional fall arrival, a move aimed at synchronizing with the industry’s development cycle, organizers said the summer fest hosted 620 development meetings, the most in its history. In all, 75 companies took part in the festival, a cross-section of networks, studios, agencies and digital platforms. The festival screened 59 pilots, recognizing top projects in 16 categories.

The New York Television Festival has selected 21 scripts for its third annual Nytvf Scripts Competition. The 13 half-hour comedies and eight hour-long dramas will be showcased to industry executives before and during the 14th Annual New York Television Festival, which runs July 14-20 in Manhattan.
This year’s Nytvf Scripts Official Selections join the 59 pilots and series in the Festival’s Independent Pilot Competition.

Time can be a hell of a drug, especially when it comes to the projected image. There’s an inherent danger in revisiting a film we have fond memories of; is it as good as we recall? Conversely, can a film improve after an initial viewing, one that perhaps was initially dismissed with a shrug and a wave of the hand? Case in point: actor David Keith’s directorial debut, The Curse (1987), a film that inspired nothing in me beyond guffaws 30 years ago. But that was then; now it inspires a sense of awe, because if you’ve ever wondered what an American-flavored Lucio Fulci film would look like, clear a spot in your collection for the class clown of the Class of ’87.

The Curse
The life of a farmer can be difficult, especially if that farmer is watering his crops with contaminated “toilet water” that came from the inside of a meteorite that crashed on his property. Farmer Nathan thought life was going was going great with his new cheating wife, empty headed kid, step-kids being smarter than him, and his strict Christian views. Unfortunately, a meteor just had to strike down on his property with no real scientific inspection from anyone for at least ¾ of the movie.
Farmer Nathan then starts noticing his vegetables filled with maggots, diseased cattle, terrible tasting tap water, and his new wife with an infection on her face. Farmer Nathan does what any farmer trying to make a living would do in such a terrible situation. Nothing.
Did you Know? Italian gore filmmaker Lucio Fulci is credited as the Associate Producer under the name Louis Fulci?...

Cannibal Women In The Avocado Jungle Of Death

To avoid an avocado shortage, an anthropology professor (Tweed!) heads into the avocado jungle of Southern California to confront the man-eating Piranha Women tribe. How the cannibals are affecting the avocado crops is anyone’s guess. But, hey, I live in SoCal, and...

It's billed as a sequel to Cloverfield, but is 10 Cloverfield Lane all it seems? We take a look at the subject of unrelated sequels...
In an era where it's just about impossible to make a high-profile movie without at least something leaking onto the web, producer Jj Abrams seems to have pulled off the ultimate coup in recent months: he and his company Bad Robot have secretly created a follow-up, of sorts, to the 2008 hit monster movie, Cloverfield.
On the 15th January, a trailer landed for 10 Cloverfield Lane, a claustrophobic horror thriller that Abrams described in a statement to Collider as a "blood relative" of that earlier film directed by Matt Reeves.
The premise is this: Mary Elizabeth Winstead's character, Michelle, is injured in a car accident and wakes up in a bunker with 40-something survivalist, Howard (John Goodman).

Scream Factory brings late 80’s horror thriller I, Madman to Blu-ray, one of two notable cult classics from Hungarian/Canadian director Tibor Tabaks. Beginning in Canadian television, Tabaks reached notoriety with his 1987 sophomore feature, The Gate, a bizarre creature feature which terrorized children with its forced perspective monsters and introduced the world to child actor Stephen Dorff. He’d follow that up with this pulpy adaptation of a screenplay by David Chaskin (A Nightmare on Elm Street 2: Freddy’s Revenge). A gothic murder mystery plays out in the eternally uneasy streets of a hazy, 1989 Hollywood in this simple yet strange forgotten oddity.
