Horror Feature “My (Best Friend’S) Head Exploded” to Premiere in June: "Writer/Director Scott Bryan’s puppet-filled existential horror feature, “My (Best Friend’S) Head Exploded,” will have its two-weekend world premiere this June.
“My (Best Friend’s) Head Exploded” is a rebellious, existential, terrifyingly messy puppet feature made out of material things by actual people. It tells the story of Lydia, a coming-of-ageless vampire forced to deal with the loss of her best friend, Sam, after the pair conjures a moment of complete clarity which causes Sam’s head to explode.
In the aftermath, Lydia must contend with old ghosts, generational trauma, oppressive authority figures, and the confusing fear of infinity to set reality right and save her own sanity.
“I love making weird stuff that a studio would be afraid of and a computer couldn’t replicate,” Bryan said.
The film will show at the Salem Witch Board Museum in Salem,...

This article contains mild spoilers for "Evil Dead Rise.""Evil Dead Rise," the latest installment in the now 40-odd-year-old "Evil Dead" franchise, is filled to the brim with evidence of writer/director Lee Cronin's bonafides toward being a fan of the series. While the film isn't merely a work of fan service, the movie is suffused with references to the earlier "Evil Dead" films, from Deadites screaming "Dead by dawn!" to a very particular clock being seen at a cabin in the film's opening sequence.
Yet Cronin isn't content with paying homage to just the "Evil Dead" series — in addition to multiple references to Stanley Kubrick's "The Shining," "Evil Dead Rise" contains some latent homages to numerous other horror films, including Lamberto Bava's similar demons-loose-in-a-high-rise splatter opus, "Demons 2." Most surprisingly, however, "Evil Dead Rise" appears to have a good deal in common with another Sam Raimi film,...

The Deadites are set to return to theaters this weekend with director Lee Cronin's gloriously unhinged "Evil Dead Rise." Visionary director Sam Raimi's twisted version of the undead bowled over unsuspecting audiences when the original "The Evil Dead" hit in 1981, ushering in a new wave of blood-soaked mayhem and low-budget terror. When Raimi first cracked open the pages of The Necronomicon (a.k.a. the Book of the Dead) in that first film, the overall tone and texture of his breakthrough debut was decidedly darker and grittier than the films that followed. When five innocent college kids accidentally unleash Hell itself at a remote cabin in the woods, the dark spirits found in "The Evil Dead" are only concerned with wreaking as much havoc as possible. If you're Ash (Bruce Campbell), the reality of watching your girlfriend Linda (Betsy Baker) and your buddies transform into possessed soul eaters...

New Short Film, Grummy, Tackles A Sensitive Subject with Beautiful Imagery and Amazing Storytelling: "Married writer/director team Micheline Pitt and R.H. Norman combine forces in the dark fantasy short film, Grummy, an autobiographic tale of Pitt’s childhood.
Inspired by the imagination that she escaped to during her own abusive childhood, Pitt and her filmmaker husband Norman share a heartbreaking yet poetic tale of a young girl whose stuffed creature, “Grummy,” brings a new world to life during her most vulnerable moments. This dark fairy tale is an expression of Pitt’s own sexual abuse survival story and a love note to the monsters and fantastic worlds that helped her survive.
According to Pitt, “This story is very personal, because I was this little girl. I used my imagination to escape from an abusive childhood; I used books, movies and toys to get away. If I didn't have my...

To mark the release of Demons 1 & 2 on 22nd February, we’ve been given 1 copy to give away on Blu-ray.
In the early 1980s, Dario Argento, the famed horror maestro responsible for such classics as Suspiria and Deep Red, branched out from directing into producing, shepherding the work of his fellow filmmakers to the screen – among them Lamberto Bava, son of the legendary Mario Bava. Together, they crafted two tales of terror that would become synonymous with Italian 80s horror, in which the veil between the real world and the silver screen is torn asunder.
In 1985’s Demons (Directed by Lamberto Bava), a motley assortment of unwitting filmgoers accept invitations to a screening at the mysterious Metropol theatre. However, as the brutal slasher film unspools, the horror breaks free from the constraints of the screen, unleashing a swarm of slathering demons, intent on spreading their evil plague across the globe. While his father Mario probably cast a longer shadow than anyone else in Italian horror cinema, Lamberto Bava has managed to leave a prominent mark on the genre through popular works such as Demons (1985) and Demons 2 (‘86). Today we’re going to rewind the clock to his official directorial debut, Macabre (1980), a truly ludicrous and bizarre film “inspired” by true events. I bet they never happened like this.
Bava Jr. certainly spent his time in the trenches, working for Dario Argento and helping his dad finish Shock (1977); while he wrote the script with friends Roberto Gandus, and Pupi and Antonio Avati as a lark after reading a newspaper story from the U.S., he was given the reins to bring this lurid story to the screen as his official calling card. And bring it he does.
Released three years later Stateside as Frozen Terror, Macabre (aka Macabro) did little business...

If your dad was Mario Bava, master of light and originator of the giallo film as we know it, you’d have a hard time following in his footsteps too; yet that is precisely what Lamberto Bava chose to do. He made some good ones right out of the gate: Macabre (1980) and A Blade in the Dark (’83) have their fans, but it was the fantastic Demons (’85) that brought him international attention. One lackluster sequel later and he was more or less relegated to the sidelines, where he found solace in Italian TV; he signed a four picture deal for a series of films under the umbrella High Tension, and the first one out of the gate was The Prince of Terror (’88), which was deemed too gruesome and shelved until 1999. I can understand why, because it does contain several gory set pieces, implied rape, and strong language. Oh, and it’s also insane and entertainingly weird.

Mubi is showing Lamberto Bava's Demons (1985) from February 26 to March 28 and Demons 2 (1986) from February 27 to March 29, 2017 in the United States as part of the series Due Demoni.Horror movie viewing as societal disease in Lamberto Bava's Demons (left) and Demons 2 (right)The opening shots of Lamberto Bava’s Demons contrast the film’s adorably ingenuous protagonist with the ragged punk hordes of the subway car she’s riding. She stares at them with equal parts fascination and doe-in-headlights dread. It’s a concise visualization of the simple social commentary driving Bava the Younger’s trashterpiece diptych, Demons and Demons 2. The two make an excellent double feature of midnight flicks about the perils of daring to dip even passingly into the lower depths of subculture and the, well, demons that society risks releasing when willing to dabble in The Weird. But cautionary tales are rarely this batshit and never this fun,...

Movies are so rarely great art that if we cannot appreciate great trash we have very little reason to be interested in them. – Pauline Kael.
The above quote from the late, legendary American film critic Kael was most certainly not referring to Lamberto Bava’s Demons (1985), but a lot of films in our beloved genre bow to this description. Demons is great trash – it wants nothing more to assault your senses with a barrage of images and sound for 88 minutes before you even know what hit you, and does so while breathing that rarified Italian air.
But I’m sure she was referring to a film like Demons – one made with a ton of style, by a filmmaker impassioned with his chosen topic, as ridiculous as that plays on the screen. And make no mistake, Demons is ridiculous; as a matter of fact, it starts there before rapidly ascending to the sublime.

Artist, musician and Italian horror actress Coralina Cataldi-Tassoni takes a stab at Macbeth. Today is William Shakespeare’s birthday, he being perhaps the greatest and most influential writers and dramatists in human history. Indeed, we own much to the man. Certainly, the horror genre owes its shirt to his often perverse pen. …

This is definitely the time of year when film critic types (I’m sure you know who I mean) spend an inordinate amount of time leading up to awards season—and it all leads up to awards season, don’t it?—compiling lists and trying to convince anyone who will listen that it was a shitty year at the movies for anyone who liked something other than what they saw and liked. And ‘tis the season, or at least ‘thas (?) been in the recent past, for that most beloved of academic parlor games, bemoaning the death of cinema, which, if the sackcloth-and-ashes-clad among us are to be believed, is an increasingly detached and irrelevant art form in the process of being smothered under the wet, steaming blanket of American blockbuster-it is. And it’s going all malnourished from the siphoning off of all the talent back to TV, which, as everyone knows,...

The ’80s marked the waning days of Italian cinema’s mastery over the genre film, but there were still quite a few gems released during the decade. Lucio Fulci (The Beyond, City of the Living Dead) and Dario Argento (Tenebre, Phenomena) each managed to direct some memorable titles, but overall the quality of the output was decreasing even as the quantity raced in the other direction. One of the most popular Italian horror films of the ’80s — Lamberto Bava’s Demons — embraced both Argento’s color schemes and Fulci’s gore addiction and combined them with an anything goes narrative and a rock and roll soundtrack. It was followed a year later by an underwhelming sequel, but even that film manages a few fun surprises. Synapse Films released both movies to Blu-ray last year in limited run steelbooks loaded with extras, but next week they’re putting out standalone Blu-rays for folks whose sole interest is the...

At the tail end of last year, Synapse Films released limited edition steelbook versions of Italian horror flicks Demons and Demons 2 on Blu-ray, which were packed with bonus features and sold out before most fans could say "Geretta Geretta."
As reported today by DVD Active, this November Synapse will be re-releasing both of the cult favorites onto Blu-ray, leaving behind the steelbook cases as well as the bonus content. Why is this noteworthy? Because the discs at long last give those of us who missed out on last year's souped up releases the chance to own the films in high-def without breaking the bank.
The site reports that the bare bones discs will likely have none of the exclusive extras that were available on the limited releases, though they note that both releases will include high-definition 1080p transfers taken from original vault materials in the 1.66:1 aspect ratio, featuring all-new color correction.

There have been some very special DVD and Blu-ray releases in 2013. We saw the rise of a new grindhouse player stroll down 42nd street with the promise of cinematic handjobs. Our beloved distro company of some of the best Italian Horror features on DVD stepped into the Blu-ray market to tackle… a Western. The factory that shouts let out a great big Scream. When Ploitation meats the Arts we have found a label that can still shock us with new releases that try just hard enough to get our attention and a company called Millennium puts out movies from mid way through last century trying to Hammer their brand into our classic horror minds.
This is my personal favorite list from 2013. This could be an endless list and doesn’t quite stretch to all the companies worth nodding to. Severin and IFC put out some really solid releases as well...

Conceptually, a horror film should seem like a self-contained endeavor. One brainstorms for a neat idea to pull off a few scares on the audience through a tale filled with some ghouls, goblins, and other various ghastly figures that go bump in the night, the end. Film history and the ever-pervasive reality of box office rewards has dictated otherwise on plenty of occasions. Warranted or not from a story perspective, horror films, from slashers to ghost tales, have seen a near-incalculable number of sequels (and now prequels and reboots) ordered into production. It is doubtful even a scientific calculator could keep proper count of all the further installments developed from horror films.
Even though the fans’ common reflex is to proclaim a sequel’s dip in quality in relation to the first episode that does not entail that a sequel is not a good film in its own right. Every now and then,...

Stanley Kubrick is one of the all time great filmmakers. 2001: Space Odyssey and the subject of analysis here, The Shining, are regarded as works of art. In Room 237, viewer interpretations are taken to such extremes that in reference to any other filmmaker besides Kubrick, some of the theories passed in this film would be deemed preposterous without hesitation.
However, because the focus is on such an esteemed auteur, you’ll find yourself nodding in concurrence as if the veil covering your eyes were suddenly pulled. Room 237 is an example of art being seen from the eye of the beholder.
Interpretation is an open book and the introduction of Room 237 displays those many chapters in the form of the proposed theories of explanation. Room 237 is the title of the excellent new documentary by director Rodney Ascher that takes the points of view of five off-screen individuals who do their best to unmask the purported hidden meanings in Stanley Kubrick’s initially disappointing yet subsequently revered 1980 film version of Stephen King’s The Shining. In doing so, they are keeping in line with a motif derived straight from the novel in a sequence wherein Horace Derwent, a former owner of the Overlook Hotel, urges his costumed party-goers to unmask at a lavish celebration, thereby revealing their identities. The human face as a mask is also a common theme throughout all of Mr. Kubrick’s filmography, so it is only fitting that Room 237 takes the approach of removing layers to reveal what might be hidden beneath the surface in order to get at The Shining’s essence.

Even though it has been over three decades since Stanley Kubrick released The Shining, that doesn't mean that the passing of time has slowed down his fans who still dissect and theorize about the film.
A truly avant-garde deconstruction of one of the greatest horror movies of all time, Rodney Ascher's Room 237 sits down with five Shining scholars who all have wildly different theories involving World War II, Native Americans, genocide, the faked moon landing, and numerology and explores them through interviews, re-enactments and more.
Dread Central recently chatted with Ascher and Room 237 producer Tim Kirk about their own fascination with Kubrick's iconic adaptation of the Stephen King novel as well as their thoughts on why the film continues to capture our imaginations all this time later. We also spoke to them about their approach to the documentary and much more on The Shining as well.

"Room 237" is hardly your average documentary. Not only does it float some very out-there theories about what Stanley Kubrick's "The Shining" is really about, it illustrates those points with clips from both the 1980 horror classic and dozens of other movies. Every single shot in the film is from an existing flick, including ones from Kubrick, Hitchcock, and Spielberg, as well as classic horror movies and silent films. Moviefone sat down with director Rodney Ascher and producer Tim Kirk, who provided insight into some of their choices. In the same spirit of obsessiveness, we've compiled every movie featured in "Room 237," below “The Shining” "Lolita" "Spartacus" "Eyes Wide Shut" "Paths of Glory" "Barry Lyndon" "2001: A Space Odyssey" "The Killing" "Fear and Desire" "Killer's Kiss" "Dr. Strangelove" "A Clockwork Orange" “Full Metal Jacket" "Drums Along the Mohawk" "The Battle of Apache Pass" "The White Buffalo" "Sitting Bull at the...

If you're stoked on "Stoker," you can thank "Prison Break" star Wentworth Miller, who is making his screenwriting debut with the gothic Park Chan-wook affair. Miller wrote the script under a pseudonym, and the results ended up on the 2010 Black List of hot screenplays that weren't yet snagged by studios.

Say what you will about his recent output, Dario Argento is still a legend in the horror community. The Italian director has released so many quality horror films and has given us so many nightmarish images over the years that I’m surprised that I can sleep at all at night. Two of these classics from the director will be making their way for the first time on Blu-ray in the states. Phenomena and Tenebrae will both be seeing a hi-def release courtesy of Synapse Films later this year. Arrow Video has previously released both of these in the UK and abroad, but U.S. fans will finally get to see the gory details of these two films on Blu-ray.
