Brian De Palma apparently was less than enthused by Pauline Kael’s scathing “Body Double” review. The legendary critic didn’t seem to grasp what De Palma was attempting with his 1984 meta noir send-up of Hollywood.
The auteur’s take on “Rear Window” centered on a struggling actor (Craig Wasson) who seems to witness a murder while housesitting for his friend’s (Gregg Henry) pal. His relationship with a rising young porn actress (Melanie Griffith) leads to him investigating whether or not his voyeurism could solve a crime.
“Body Double,” which is receiving a theatrical re-release as part of Netflix’s Milestone Movies program in honor of its 40th anniversary, was received “harshly” by critics, according to actor Henry, who reunited with writer/director/producer De Palma after having a single yet memorable line in “Scarface.” Henry went on to work with De Palma for six more films.

Jaws, The Shawshank Redemption, Blade Runner, Goodfellas and more are getting 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray Steelbooks in the UK.
The Film Vault range of physical media releases has previously seen much-loved films presented in deluxe packaging, with assorted extra materials in the box. They’re on the pricey side, but there’s no denying the love that’s gone into putting them together.
Now, a slightly more economic range of reissues for the seven films in the range so far is incoming, which sees the same movies now arriving in fresh Steelbook packaging. The distinctive artwork from the earlier releases is included, and there’s brand new art on the reverse of each as well. The artwork has been designed by Matt Ferguson and Florey of Vice Press.

Britain’s contributions to the cinematic form have been vast and glorious. Aardman Animation. Alfred Hitchcock. Olivia Colman. 007. High up that list, too, is the British gangster movie – sure, America may often get the genre limelight with classics like Goodfellas, The Godfather trilogy, and Scarface, but nobody does dark, gritty, violent, and darkly humorous quite like the British. You certainly wouldn’t catch football-hardman-turned-movie-hardman Vinnie Jones rolling down the street with some poor geezer’s bonce trapped in his car window anywhere else, that’s for sure!
And so, with tracksuits on, geezer nicknames doled out, and knuckles dusted, Team Empire assembled a list of the very best British gangster movies ever made. From comedy classics, to bruising turn-of-the-century tales of brutality and crime, to contemporary subversions of the genre formula, we’ve covered all bases. In the whole history of cinema, only a handful of actors have managed to create such a deep significant impression as Al Pacino has. Widely regarded as one of the greatest actors in the history of American cinema, the legend has delivered masterclasss, one after the other, in each and every role he has taken.
A Pacino (Image: YouTube | Jimmy Kimmel Live)
With a more than five decades-long career, Pacino has won numerous awards and accolades for his unforgettable performances in films such as The Godfather, Scarface, and Scent of a Woman. Yet when it comes to regrets, the acclaimed actor only laments not being able to work with one visionary director.

Following the success of Jonathan Demme's "The Silence of the Lambs" in 1991, Hollywood released an eight-year-long tidal wave of serial killer thrillers, each one pulpier than the last. This was the era of "Seven," "Copycat," "Along Came a Spider," "Jennifer 8," "See No Evil," "Eye of the Beholder," "Sliver," "Knight Moves," and any number of others. Right at the end of the decade came Phillip Noyce's 1999 thriller "The Bone Collector," based on the airport novel by Jeffery Deaver. Deaver's original novel was the first of the long-running Lincoln Rhyme series, a series that saw its 16th installment published in 2023. Lincoln Rhyme, thanks to a spinal accident, could not move his body below his neck, and fought crime from his bed, deducting details, looking at pictures, and relying on his team.
In the film adaptation, Denzel Washington played Lincoln Rhyme and Angelina Jolie played his plucky crime fighting partner Amelia Donaghy.

Al Pacino has announced a new memoir titled Sonny Boy.
Due on October 8th via Penguin Press (pre-order here), Sonny Boy will see Pacino reminisce on the breadth of his life’s experiences, touching on “all of his great roles, his essential collaborations, and his important relationships,” according to its publisher.
Speaking to People, Pacino said: “I wrote Sonny Boy to express what I’ve seen and been through in my life. Upon its release in October, Sonny Boy will be available in hardcover, paperback, ebook, and audiobook formats. Pacino will narrate the audiobook himself. Pre-orders are ongoing.

Al Pacino’s unconventional delivery of the 2024 Oscars’ best picture winner Sunday night had some people in the audience wondering if the Godfather star was winging it with Oscar tradition, but Pacino says he was largely following the Academy’s own script.
“There seems to be some controversy about my not mentioning every film by name last night before announcing the best picture award,” Pacino said in a statement issued Monday. “I just want to be clear it was not my intention to omit them, rather a choice by the producers not to have them said again since they were highlighted individually throughout the ceremony. I was honored to be a part of the evening and chose to follow the way they wished for this award to be presented.

For an Academy Awards that were meant to be incredibly predictable, there were still plenty of moments at the 2024 Oscars that kept the in-house audience on their toes.
Working backwards, it cannot be understated how disruptive Al Pacino’s presentation of the Best Picture winner was in the room. Those in the know were already thrown off by his haphazard nod to “The Godfather Part II,” clearly an attempt to save face by the veteran Best Actor winner, a bit of misdirection involving his missing “Scarface” co-star Michelle Pfeiffer, who had previously been announced as a presenter on this year’s show.
And yet, the most unsettling moment was Pacino’s casual delivery of “And my eyes see ‘Oppenheimer,’” which was met with silence, as the Dolby Theatre audience tried to process if he was serious or not. On YouTube, the whole moment plays at a little bit of a faster pace,...

All evening, the Oscar ceremony appeared on course for a Scarface reunion of Al Pacino and Michelle Pfeiffer to introduce the final award for Best Picture.
Instead, Pacino walked out by himself to present the category, with the announcer portraying this as a tribute to the 50th anniversary of one of Pacino’s signature movies, The Godfather.

While the Scarface reunion was never formally announced, it was fully expected, and Pacino and Pfeiffer were both confirmed as presenters, so Pacino going solo was a surprise.
According to sources, Pfeiffer was not able to attend the ceremony for personal family reasons and was on the East Coast Sunday night.

The Academy Awards are finally (almost) here, sending off the spectacular cinematic year of 2023 with bang.
The 2024 Oscars will take place tonight, with Jimmy Kimmel returning to host. This year’s crop of contenders range from “Barbie” to “Oppenheimer,” “American Fiction” to “The Holdovers,” and “Anatomy of a Fall” to “Killers of the Flower Moon.”
While certain categories seem to have a sure frontrunner — like Lily Gladstone in the Best Actress race for her performance in Martin Scorsese’s “Killers of the Flower Moon,” “Oppenheimer” star Robert Downey Jr. as Best Supporting Actor, and Da’Vine Joy Randolph as Best Supporting Actress for “The Holdovers” — others are thoroughly a toss-up in terms of predictions.
Will Best Adapted Screenplay go to Noah Baumbach and Greta Gerwig for “Barbie,” to Christopher Nolan for his WWII epic “Oppenheimer,” or to Cord Jefferson for his satirical take on novel “Erasure,” which gave us “American Fiction...

Is Yorgos Lanthimos’ horny fairytale Poor Things really available to stream on the home of straight-up fairytales, Disney+? Yes — kinda.
As of March 7th, the film has become available to stream on Disney+ in the UK, and on Hulu in the United States. But thanks to Disney+ and Hulu’s ongoing integration, viewers in the US with the bundle have the option to watch Poor Things directly on Disney+.
What’s notable about this is Poor Things’ graphic content. As Consequence’s Clint Worthington noted in his review, the film features “everything from rampant scenes of acrobatic sex to dismemberment and disfigurements of all sorts.” Throughout its narrative, main character Bella Baxter (Emma Stone) — a developing infant’s brain placed in a grown body — discovers masturbation, sexual pleasure, exploitation, and many grim aspects of the modern world.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has announced the presenters for the upcoming 96th Oscars on March 10.
While names like Brendan Fraser (“The Whale”) and Michelle Yeoh (“Everything Everywhere All at Once”) were expected, as it’s custom for the most recent Best Actor winner to present Best Actress, and the most recent Best Actress winner to present Best Actor, the rest of the slate is almost all past Academy Award winners and arguably the biggest young star of the moment.
Two-time Best Supporting Actor winner Mahershala Ali and Best Actor winner Matthew McConaughey (“Dallas Buyers Club”) among them, plus the recent popularity of Season 4, opens the door to the Oscars having a nod to “True Detective” (“Night Country” star Jodie Foster also happens to be a Best Supporting Actress nominee.)

World-renowned director Steven Spielberg was at the height of his career when he made the Oscar-winning film "Schindler's List," but he wasn't the only filmmaker who was interested in adapting the novel of the same name for the silver screen. The acclaimed director Billy Wilder, an auteur of classic Hollywood cinema who penned and directed such renowned films as "The Apartment" and "Sunset Boulevard," was also vying for the rights to turn this story into a movie. However, by the time Thomas Keneally's evocative historical novel was published in 1993, Wilder's career was already winding down.
For a long time, Wilder enjoyed one of the most prosperous careers in Hollywood. His Oscar-nominated 1944 film "Double Indemnity" is considered the signal film of noir cinema and the model of the femme fatale trope. After Wilder's smashing success "Sunset Boulevard" earned three Oscars in 1951, he quickly went on to release several star vehicles...

As the first lists of Oscar presenters are released, it's fun to try parsing out potential connections between invited names. Even if it's nothing but a brief shot of nostalgia at seeing two familiar faces backed by a classic's main theme, there's something thrilling about the whole apparatus. Since the Oscars have grown so allergic to celebrating cinema's past – unlike the Grammys - these tidbits feel extra special. When perusing the first batch of celebrities, a couple of names stood out. First, we have Michelle Pfeiffer, eternal Film Experience favorite. And then there's Al Pacino, who starred with the blonde star in Brian De Palma's Scarface. The picture just celebrated 40 years last December, making an awards show tribute especially timely.

Al Pacino has worked very hard to craft a reputation in Hollywood that very few have managed to get. Having starred in more masterpieces than perhaps anyone in the history of cinema, he is one of the greatest actors of all time. This title, of course, did not come easy, as the actor is known for having some very unique habits that help him get into the minds of his characters.
Al Pacino in Scarface
He is known for being very erratic and unpredictable when put in front of a camera. So much so, that no take will ever be the same with Pacino. His co-star in his 1995 film, Heat, Hank Azaria, revealed exactly this in a recent post. The actor revealed that the iconic scene of him being yelled at by Al Pacino was unscripted.

Al Pacino is one of the most celebrated and influential actors of all time. He has breathed life into countless roles, etched forever in cinematic history. He has won numerous awards and accolades for his performance in movies such as “Serpico”, “Scarface”, “Scent of a Woman”, and most importantly, “The Godfather”.
A still from The Godfather
The Godfather is a 1972 epic crime thriller directed by Francis Ford Coppola. The movie is easily ranked among one of the greatest and the most inspiring movies ever. It also pushed Pacino’s acting career off to an outstanding start. However, it was not all sunshine and rainbows for the star while doing the movie. At one time, he had the director Coppola wondering why he hired Pacino in the first place!

Almost everyone knows the name of Tony Montana, the fictional drug lord immortalized by Al Pacino in the 1983 movie "Scarface," yet few know the name of Miami's real-life most notorious king, er, queenpin, Griselda Blanco Restrepo. In the late 1970s, Blanco seized control of Miami's drug trade through incredible violence, waging war on any who opposed her. This led to the "Cocaine Cowboy" wars, in which Blanco's enforcers would kill their opponents in broad daylight, sometimes in motorcycle drive-by shootings. Blanco's life story is both fascinating and terrible, full of sex, drugs, and murder, and is totally ripe for a fictionalized interpretation.
Sofia Vergara stars as Blanco in "Griselda," a six-part limited series on Netflix that tells the story of the infamous self-made billionaire, drug pusher, and multiple murderer, although the real story is even more brutal and impossible to believe than the miniseries depicts. Most remember Griselda Blanco as the “Black Widow,” a ruthless Colombian drug lord whose network flooded Miami with cocaine, brought in $80 million a month nationally, and who’s been personally implicated in a rumored 200 murders. Michael Corleone Blanco, her youngest son raised at the height of her drug-trafficking empire, admits she was a rigid, stern woman he affectionately called cariñosa — an endearing term given to loved ones.
“As a kid, you can’t really comprehend what is wrong, what is right, and what is the family business,” Blanco tells Rolling Stone.

For us 90s kids, Dick Tracy was an interesting monster of a movie. It seemed to take a lot of cues from Tim Burton’s Batman, which was released the previous summer, but it definitely had a distinct voice of its own. Dick Tracy was another classic pulp adaptation of an urban enforcer that had very dynamic visuals and an over-the-top rogues gallery. It even sported a score by Danny Elfman, which would have his signature atmospheric sound. The movie would introduce a generation of young audiences to the 1930’s film noir/ detective movie genre. Additionally, the movie brought back Warren Beatty after a three-year absence when his last film, 1987’s Ishtar, was a big flop. Having a star like Beatty in a big-budget franchise like this was an enormous asset for the re-budding intellectual property. And the star power wouldn’t even stop there.

On Jan. 17, media conglomerate Condé Nast revealed that it would be laying off staff at the online music publication Pitchfork and merging the website with men’s magazine GQ. “Today we are evolving our Pitchfork team structure by bringing the team into the GQ organization,” wrote Anna Wintour, chief content officer at the venerable company that also publishes The New Yorker, Vogue, and Vanity Fair, in a memo to staffers that was first reported by Semafor and obtained by Rolling Stone. Armitage Trail's original novel "Scarface" was first published in 1930, and traces the rise and fall of the vicious gangster Tony "Scarface" Guarino, who took over the Chicago bootlegging underground during Prohibition. Clearly, Tony Guarino is an analog to Al Capone, and many true crime fans find it tantalizingly suspicious that Armitage Trail (real name: Maurice R. Coons) died of a heart attack at age 28, only six months after the publication of "Scarface." Coons, after all, had to hobnob with real gangsters in order to get ideas for his novel, and he would have been known in certain corners of the underground.
In 1932, director Howard Hawks made the first film version of "Scarface," starring Paul Muni as Antonio "Tony" Camonte. Hawks' film was well-received, with some critics citing its naturalness and lack of melodrama. Indeed, it was so natural and treated crime with such frankness that some markets refused to show it.

It’s usually a noteworthy role when an actor inhabits a character that has an accent of any kind. Tom Hanks would adopt a strong Southern accent for Forrest Gump or a European accent for The Terminal. Al Pacino would illicit a ton of impressions as Tony Montana in Scarface. Even Sacha Baron Cohen gave people a reason to repeat his comedy ad nauseam with Borat. However, it’s pretty rare for an American actor to have roles back-to-back in a particular dialect for two projects that are unrelated. But that’s exactly how it worked out for Adam Driver. Although he’s had releases in between, Driver has had a couple of recent stand-out roles in succession where he would portray an Italian native and sported an accent with the films House of Gucci and Ferrari.
In the grand scheme of his career, it’s mere trivia or a footnote.

A New Year means lots of removals from Netflix and January 1st is looking busy, with over 100 movies set to leave the service already. Below, we’ll be keeping track of all the Netflix departures for the first month of 2024.
First, a few housekeeping notes as to how Netflix removals work before we dive in. Due to licensing agreements, shows and movies added to Netflix aren’t added forever. Instead, they’re essentially rented for a fixed period. All the shows below have their current window on Netflix ending and will likely be bound for a rival streaming service.
We list titles slightly differently from other outlets, with our listings being the actual day of removal. If you want to watch any titles scheduled to expire on January 1st, for example, you’ll need to watch by the end of December 31st.

The career of Scott Frank got a lengthy deep dive courtesy of a profile in The New Yorker that revealed the writer-director has a $300,000 weekly fee as a Hollywood script doctor. Frank acknowledges this fee is “insane,” but being a script doctor is how he’s made a life for himself despite being a credited screenwriter on films by Steven Soderbergh (“Out of Sight”), Barry Sonnenfield (“Get Shorty”), James Mangold and more. He’s also the Emmy-winning writer and director of Netflix’s “The Queen’s Gambit.” Plus, $300,000 a week feels earned after putting the finishing touches on nearly 60 films, including “Saving Private Ryan,” “Night at the Museum,” “Unfaithful,” “The Ring,” “Gravity” and “a lot of the X-Men movies.”
A “script doctor” is the term given to a screenwriter hired to punch up or reshape a pre-existing script, be it smoothing out a messy third act or overhauling the dialogue to make a character more memorable.

Over the decades, a number of people have been attached to the various iterations of the Scarface reboot, including Suicide Squad director David Ayer.
Although David Ayer exited the Scarface reboot in 2017, he told Total Film that he still regards the unmade script as one of his best. “One of the best scripts I’ve ever written was my Scarface draft,” Ayer said. “It gets passed around in Hollywood, underground. It’s funny when people talk about the project. ‘Is it the Ayer script?’ ‘No, it’s somebody else.’ ‘Oh, Ok.’”
At the time of Ayer’s exit, it was reported that his take on the script was too dark and violent for the studio, which he takes issue with. “It wasn’t too violent. Violence – I can cover it. If someone gets shot, I can photograph it where a head explodes and have a hard R, and it’s not going to alienate people.

David Ayer has talked about the Scarface reboot he wrote for Universal, which didn’t happen due to disagreements over tone, he says.
In 2011 – not long after the release of bodycam cop thriller End Of Watch – David Ayer was hired by Universal to write a reboot of Scarface. It was the start of a project that Ayer would remain involved with off-and-on for several years; originally, it was reported that David Yates would direct Ayer’s script. By 2017, other attempts at the same project – headed up by Pablo Larain and Antoine Fuqua, among other filmmakers – had fallen apart, and Ayer was back on board again, this time as writer and director.
Ayer’s version of Scarface was to be set in Los Angeles and would have starred Diego Luna as the titular gangster – contrasting the 1932 version, set in Chicago, and the 1983 one, set in Miami. Speaking to Total Film, Ayer...

Universal has long wanted to reboot “Scarface,” Brian de Palma’s 1983 crime classic starring Al Pacino as a powerful Miami drug lord. Multiple directors have circled the reboot over the years, including Antoine Fuqua, Luca Guadagnino and David Ayer. The latter director boarded “Scarface” the year after his “Suicide Squad” grossed $747 million worldwide despite negative reviews. Ayer boarded the reboot in May 2017 as Fuqua’s replacement, but come July 2017 he was already exiting. Some reports cited a scheduling conflict due to Ayer also working on his Netflix action movie “Bright,” but others claimed Ayer and Universal disagreed over his darker take on the material.
In a new interview with Total Film magazine, Ayer said that his script for the “Scarface” reboot was not “too violent” as some reports claimed in 2017, although he did suggest that his take on the gangster was too dark for Universal’s liking. The studio wanted...

Kapoor plays the scion of a wealthy family whose violence is the result of a craving for love and validation, in a regressive Bollywood blockbuster
Already topping the box office in India, Sandeep Reddy Vanga’s bombastic action film is high on shock tactics and low on substance. His first two features, the Telugu-language Arjun Reddy (2017) and its Hindi remake Kabir Singh (2019) were both megahits – and also attracted criticism for making heroes out of misogynistic, violent men. A movie directed by the berserk “Muppet Show” character known as Animal couldn’t be any more unruly than Sandeep Reddy Vanga’s new film of that title. This sporadically fun but exhausting hot mess provides 202 minutes of hyperventilating overkill for star Ranbir Kapoor as a tycoon’s favorite son whose anger-management (as well as daddy) issues are off the charts. Contrastingly notable for their absence are emotional depth, narrative cogency or non-scatological humor — lacks that much ultra-violence and a surprising amount of sexual content can only distract from so much over such a long, bombastic, shallow course.
Nonetheless, the over-the-top intensity pushed for nearly three and a half hours is likely to impress many viewers. That’s being counted on as “Animal” opens this weekend on the largest number of U.S. screens for any Indian feature to date.

"Frasier" had a bevy of guest stars throughout its original eleven-season run, but you might not recognize some of them on first watch. That's because many of the most famous actors to appear on the beloved sitcom did so in voice only, calling into psychologist Frasier Crane's (Kelsey Grammer) Seattle radio show for all manner of life advice. Casting a celebrity who viewers never actually see felt like a new gimmick when the series first premiered, and it's frankly still a rarity now.
In an oral history of the series published by Vanity Fair in 2018, series co-creators Peter Casey and David Lee, casting director Jeff Greenberg, and director Jimmy Burrows talked about how the call-in guest stars idea originated, who showed up on the other end of the line, and which celebrities turned "Frasier" down. "Early on, someone suggested getting guest voices," Casey recalled. "Kelsey agreed, as long as they weren't goofy calls.

"Aquaman: The Lost Kingdom" isn't hitting theaters until December, but "Saturday Night Live" took full advantage of getting franchise star Jason Momoa to host the show before he gets super busy on the international publicity tour. Momoa first hosted "SNL" back in 2018 before the release of the first "Aquaman" movie, and it was a pretty decent episode that happened just before Christmas, giving us a new holiday favorite with Momoa as a member of Santa's Elf on the Shelf team.
Sadly, this new "SNL" episode taking us into Thanksgiving week wasn't nearly as good. Strangely enough, this felt more like it was Momoa's first time hosting rather than his second trip to Studio 8H in 30 Rockefeller Plaza. While there are a couple of standout sketches, many were subpar, a couple squandered great premises, and some were just plain bad.
So let's dig into the highlights from Jason Momoa's second time hosting "Saturday Night Live.

She said, quoted by People: “I was kind of nervous … and I’d had a couple of bad blind dates and I had sworn off of them, and my best friend said, ‘Please, just this last time, meet this guy, David Kelley,’ and I said, ‘Okay’. I thought it was a good idea to do something like a bowling party.

Comedian Chris Rock wanted to work alongside Scarface star Al Pacino for the acclaimed project Scent of a Woman. But the role he pursued would later go to Chris O’ Donnell, which he felt was a mistake.

One of O’ Donnell’s breakthrough roles came from Scent of a Woman. The young actor at the time played a college student taking care of Al Pacino’s character for some extra money. The movie was both commercially and critically successful, putting O’ Donnell on the map and earning Pacino an Academy Award. But before O’ Donnell, Rock showed interest in the role. He didn’t get it, which he felt showed a lack of vision on the film’s part.
