After a gestation period longer than several female whales, we're finally closing in on the UK release of Where the Wild Things Are. Based on the 'children's' book by Maurice Sendak, the film has been a labour of love for director Spike Jonze. Telling the story of one boy's adventure and an imaginary world of wild monsters, the story has sold nearly 20 million copies worldwide. Despite having Sendak's own illustrations as a guide, there is always a danger in creating a film that so many people picture in different ways. From the look of the trailer, Jonze has worked wonders. The beautifully realised creatures look funny and a little bit scary but most of all empathetic. They remind me - and this is being said as a massive compliment - of the Gorgs - the wonderful creatures who lived above ground in Fraggle Rock. Jim Henson was always the master of humanising his creations. »

Fraggle Rock was the very first show on HBO and, in a lot of ways, the ultimate palate cleanser for all the episodic storytelling and creativity yet to come. After all, almost every day in Fraggle Rock included a clean moral, a pitch perfect song, a pure act of friendship, and a nice, pared-down script. But being a Jim Henson product, and his wide vision of a world symbiosis guiding it lightspeed ahead of any other kids show, inasmuch as it was a “kids show,” it's hard to describe Fraggle Rock as simply a first foray into entertainment. In fact, in this last season, it actually feels more like a final word.
At some point or another here, the fun-loving and usually independent Fraggle friends each get their own special interactions with the mysterious Gorgs, Doozers, and Silly Creatures (humans) they share the planet with, and each results in a transcendent amount of warmth, »

While “Fraggle” and “Christmas” might not seem completely synonymous at first glance, this package isn't quite the straight-up ploy it seems. The series did present a society populated with creatures that had to care for others and be cared for, after all; and altruism was appreciated as a literal value, fitting in with the whole December-patented spirit of giving. Obviously, it still is a ploy, since this DVD doesn't even contain a special, but just three episodes from the series that you already own if you have one of the other seasons—only one of them even being about the holidays. But, at the end of the day, anything Jim Henson is better than most other drivel your kid might pick up, so here are what the episodes are about to help you make the leap into purchasing.

The biggest DVD and Blu-ray release for this week is probably G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra. It pains me to know that this week some brave souls will give it another chance, while others will discover its sheer idiocy for the first time. If you're looking for something slightly better but still mediocre, you might try Tony Scott's remake of The Taking of Pelham 123. Other smaller releases for the week include Dolph Lundgren's direct-to-dvd action flick Command Performance, the Spanish post-apocalyptic flick Before The Fall, and the G.I. Joe Resolute animated microseries. Also keep an eye out for a few noteworthy documentaries this week including Food Inc., The English Surgeon, and the John Hughes doc Don't You Forget About Me (in Canada only). Plus: James Bond and Rocky collections on Blu-ray, and the only partially redundant Watchmen: The Ultimate Cut! Will you be picking anything up this week? »

Before we get into this week's releases I thought I would alert you to an upcoming 50% off Criterion Collection titles at Barnes and Nobles beginning on November 10 and running for two weeks. The full details, and a $5 off coupon, can be found in the DVD Talk forums.
Wings of Desire (Criterion Collection) This is a huge week for major title releases on Blu-ray as Criterion's release of Wim Wenders's Wings of Desire is just the first of three titles I reviewed and most likely blew my word count for the next two weeks trying to get all of my thoughts squared away.
As for this title specifically, it was my first time seeing it and as it played on and on I began to enjoy it more and more. However, if you read my lengthy review, you will »

Time for some full disclosure. While I like to consider myself a reasonably well-read, serious guy, I enjoy all sorts of entertainment. I'm a Trekker. Growing up, I loved Sesame Street, the Muppets, Zoom, and The Electric Company. And though I was probably way too old at the time -- I was in college -- and shouldn't admit this, I was a huge fan of Fraggle Rock. The show, created by Muppet master Jim Henson, was actually one of HBO's earliest original series, and it was just brilliant. From the opening lyrics of the theme song -- "Dance your cares away/Worries for another day/Let the music play/Down at Fraggle Rock" -- to the creatures, and from the vibrant visuals to the charming/serious lessons taught each episode, Fraggle Rock was a treat. Stories centered on the Fraggles, a group of cave-dwelling, free-spirited humanoid creatures, and the other »

Why are Justin's legs the only ones spread?
We open our Nearly Naked Frenchman episode with Sarah and Luc in bed together, and him plotting ways to keep her there indefinitely. I don’t know if that means I should be envious, or call the police to rescue her. Or offer myself as a hostage in exchange. Hey, I'm selfless that way.
In any case the unexpected return of her missing children, who were gallivanting around Europe with their father, causes Luc to run out the back door. And that's too bad as the walk-of-shame is always more fun with kids around.
Luc seems to have experience dashing out the backdoor while dressing.
Back at the Walker Manse, Robert brings food to Kitty on a tray, and I can’t help but think she’s milking this whole cancer thing a bit. I’ve known people that went through aggressive »

Where the Wild Things Are Directed by Spike Jonze Maurice Sendak's 1963 children's classic Where the Wild Things Are contains exactly 10 sentences, 338 words of text and 18 pictures. The book, which the author refers to as a ¨personal exorcism,¨ earned a Caldecott Medal, went on to touch millions of readers worldwide, was eventually ranked by Publishers Weekly as one of the 10 all-time best-selling books for children since the 1970s and served as the basis for an animated short, an opera, a ballet, a museum exhibit and now a major motion picture. Spike Jonze's heartfelt adaptation is as beautiful, heartbreaking, and ingenuous as the original source material. Jonze creates an entire emotional and spiritual visual life which is as valid as the book. Giving it a modern cinematic voice, he manages to never take anything away from the story but rather he enhances and riches its text. Jonze makes the clever »

Nathan Fillion has been many things in the eyes of fans, from the cocky superhero Captain Hammer to the captain of Serenity, Mal Reynolds. A few fans even saw him as the Green Lantern. But who does Nathan Fillion really see himself playing on the big screen? Why, the Greatest American Hero, of course!
In a recent interview Fillion did with The Flickcast, he mentioned that he thought he’d be perfect for the role originally made famous by William Katt. The 1980’s TV show was about high school teacher Ralph Hinkley who is asked to become a superhero after being given a special alien suit with powers that he never really learns how to use or control. The show also co-starred the awesome Robert Culp as FBI agent Bill Maxwell and Connie Sellecca as Hinkley’s significant other.
The show went on for three seasons, spawned a spin-off, and »

EW.com is departing from the traditional Gossip Girl TV recap for now and in its place are the five things you need to know from each night's episode. Let's get the ball rolling because last night, Georgina returned and where G goes, crazy is sure to follow: 1. Blair lives in the Nyu dorms - As we learned last season, Georgina asked to room with Blair. More shocking than that is the fact that Blair chose the Nyu dorms, with its communal bathrooms and fluorescent lighting, as Chuck points out, over a sweet pad in the West Village. Her decision backfires when the Nyu students don't buy her "Queen Bee" act and ditch her sushi and saketini party for a Georgina-orchestrated viewing of Vanessa's documentary about a local community garden (because Vanessa would make a documentary about that). As Georgina so wonderfully puts it, they like Vanessa "more than the »

A lot of us grew up with either the Muppets, Fraggle Rock, or anything having to do with Henson. Well, the awesome folks over at MTV were able to sit down with Brian Henson, the son of Muppets creator Jim Henson, to find out the latest scoop on the Fraggle Rock movie along with the possibility of a Dark Crystal movie sequel.
“It’ll have a strong musical component,” he said. “It’ll be expanded to an older audience. ‘Fraggle Rock’ [the TV show] was presented… for a pretty exclusively children’s audience. The feature film does expand it to be more accessible to a wider audience.” “We have a ‘Dark Crystal’ sequel, called ‘The Power of the Dark Crystal.’ It has a very strong script.” More emphasis. I like that, Mr. Henson. Enthusiasm. It’s infectious. I’m already excited about these projects, and hearing your comments only amplifies that. “Both of those projects… »

While I.m personally more excited for Jason Segal.s interpretation of the Muppets (no longer a Henson property, apparently), it.s easy to assume that there are plenty of people ready to hear news about a Fraggle Rock movie. Much like the Muppets, Fraggle Rock has been able to grow a die-hard fan base that would buy Fraggle hair gel if it were possible. Well, fans can rest assured that the movie is coming. MTV news had a chance to talk with Brian Henson, son of Jim, about upcoming projects for the Jim Henson Company. Henson says that the Fraggle Rock movie still .very active in development.. In fact, there.s even a script (a good one too) according to Henson. Additionally, Brian also dropped more than a few hints that a sequel to Dark Crystal was also in heavy development. Jim Henson's son Brian has been talking to MTV about two pretty exciting upcoming projects, which are both very very close to entering pre-production. The films are a big-screen version of the 1980's TV show Fraggle Rock and a sequel to The Dark Crystal. Henson had this to say about Fraggle Rock:
"It'll have a strong musical component. It'll be expanded to an older audience. 'Fraggle Rock' [the TV show] was presented... for a pretty exclusively children's audience. The feature film does expand it to be more accessible to a wider audience."
As for The Dark Crystal sequel?
"We have a 'Dark Crystal' sequel, called 'The Power of the Dark Crystal.' It has a very strong script. Both of those projects... are very close to going into pre-production," Henson said. "They're both really ready to go. [The studio is] just [in the process of] putting together the final finance pieces and the final distribution pieces. »

Rockin' out
Brian Henson, son of the late Jim Henson, told MTV that the Jim Henson Company is currently working on a follow-up to the 1982 favorite The Dark Crystal.
“We have a Dark Crystal sequel, called The Power of the Dark Crystal. It has a very strong script.”
You’re right, that’s not much. However, if you live in a world where all you live for is muppet news, this nugget is a bombshell. Henson went on to say The Power of the Dark Crystal, along with his other project, a little thing called Fraggle Rock, are in “very active development.” Henson also told MTV that the script for Fraggle also has a “very strong script.”
That’s two, count ‘em, two strong scripts.
“Both of those projects… are very close to going into pre-production,” Henson said. “They’re both really ready to go. [The studio is] just [in the process of] putting together the final »
